So whats the muzzle device at the end of this SVU rifle? I cant seem to find a straight forward answer on wether this is a supressor or a muzzle brake.

đ§ tf I'd that

Bullpup SVD. Some are even capable of full auto.

The one above is FA

It's like a Kel-Tec RFB at home. Or maybe the Kel-Tec RFB is the SVU at home.

The answer to sniper-only matches in BO2 when you can't aim for shit. (Especially with an ACOG or Reflex sight)
No-Reception8659@reddit
OTs-03 SVU

For a bit more context whenever I search "SVU muzzle brake" on google this muzzle device comes up but when I search "SVU suppressor" or "SVU silencer" the same muzzle device also appears.
fendtrian@reddit
Damn, almost as if it fits both purposes. Almost as if youâre question was already answered. But just to be sure, maybe ask it in r/forgottenweapons

That's where you are now.

Acting like an ass for what?

To make themselves feel big?
rextrem@reddit
Both I guess ?
It's like on the AK74, it's an expansion chamber, a sort of moderator, followed by the typical 70s soviet muzzle brake.
man_o_brass@reddit
In "the SVD Dragunov Rifle", author Chris McNab describes it as a "combined flash hider and sound suppressor". The picture you posted depicts the SVU-A, to which they added a muzzle brake on the end.
After_Chicken1887@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the reply! so it's basically both?
man_o_brass@reddit
Any decent suppressor is going to act as a flash hider, so yep.
gundog48@reddit
I feel like this won't be a particularly decent suppressor just going on the size and relative age. Wondering if it's just meant to hide the flash and deaden or redirect the sound or something?Â
lockpickerkuroko@reddit
If the suppressor makes it more difficult for the enemy to pinpoint the sniper's location then I'd say it's done its job. The SVU fires full-power 54R - you're unlikely to get any sort of real sound suppression with 7N1.
man_o_brass@reddit
Define "real sound suppression".
lockpickerkuroko@reddit
As in a meaningful reduction of the actual muzzle report, like you might have with a bigger over-barrel suppressor combined with subsonic ammo a'la the VSSK, or a SIG LVAW.
man_o_brass@reddit
Define "meaningful". Even a 10 dB reduction dramatically effects sound propagation at extended ranges (hundreds of meters). It doesn't sound like you've done much shooting with suppressors.
lockpickerkuroko@reddit
Shooting at all, actually - I'm from a nation of no gun ownership and my knowledge of firearms is unfortunately pretty much book-only, so it's nice when people like yourself chime in to correct me.
I am curious just how useful something like the SVU's suppressor would be if it has a muzzle brake at the end of it which I assume would produce a visible muzzle flash.
man_o_brass@reddit
I forgot to say that, in the book I referenced, the author states that adding the muzzle brake to the end of the SVU suppressor reduced felt recoil "by about 40 percent."
The muzzle booster on the AK-74U wasn't added for recoil mitigation. It served as a gas reservoir to increase the pressure acting on the gas piston.
man_o_brass@reddit
Ah, gotcha. An unsuppressed rifle shooting supersonic ammo will generate a muzzle blast in roughly the 160dB to 170dB range. A bullpup rifle brings that blast closer to the shooters head, making it even more unpleasant. ANY amount of suppression will make the muzzle blast less painful for the shooter. It will also reduce the distance from which the muzzle blast can be heard by whoever you are shooting at.
The supersonic crack of a 30 caliber bullet is around 130db, making it infeasible to suppress a rifle any quieter than that. Good modern suppressors can bring a .30 cal rifle down into the 135dB -140dB range. This is HUGE decrease in loudness. Every 10dBs of reduction equates to 1/10th the peak sound pressure, so reducing a rifle from 160 to 140 means there is only 1/100th of the noise being generated. This greatly reduces the risk of hearing damage to the shooter, and greatly reduces how easily the enemy can pinpoint his location.
lockpickerkuroko@reddit
That's neat! Although the SVU's suppressor is probably far from a 'good modern suppressor' it likely does still fulfill the basic purpose of making it harder to detect the marksman, so in that regard I'd say it's a nice thing to have for the soldier.
While we're here talking numbers, how effective are larger-calibre suppressors like those for .338 or .50? I'd assume it still produces a meaningful reduction.
man_o_brass@reddit
The bigger the hole, the more noise can get out. Suppressors for .17 caliber rifles can be insanely quiet, but as the caliber increases, so does the practical limit to how quiet the suppressor can be. A .338 suppressor will never be quite as quiet as a .30 caliber suppressor can be, and a .50 cal suppressor is significantly louder. Barrett states a 23dB reduction for their .50 cal suppressor, but that will only be enough to bring the volume down to around 150db for the shooter, which is still painfully loud. By the time you get up to 12 gauge shotguns, a suppressor can't do much besides take the edge off. I own a Salvo 12, and high-brass loads are still uncomfortably loud even though shotgun shells generate much lower pressures than rifle rounds.
annonimity2@reddit
Soviet made suppressors aren't all that great but it should be decent at flash supression, especially with an extra flash suppressor on the end. Still wouldn't ditch the earpro just yet.
man_o_brass@reddit
Deadening the sound is what suppressor does. Just because it probably wasn't a great suppressor by modern standards doesn't mean it wasn't a suppressor.
Just look at the XM177. It was only designed to suppress a CAR-15 down to the same volume as an M-16. Nowhere near hearing safe, but still a suppressor.
MusicallyInhibited@reddit
I thought the XM177 muzzle device only got it's "suppressor" label from the ATF, specifically regarding civilian ownership
I believe Colt just called the muzzle device a "moderator"
Loud-Log9098@reddit
The atf says the moderator is a suppressor because it does lower the sound by a very little bit. Like hardly anything. It's pretty nonsense. Im going to build a xm-177 like gun and I'm just going to get a flash hider that looks the same because I'm not worry about getting a stamp for something that won't even be suppressed and eventually I'll put an actual suppressor on it to complete that look.
man_o_brass@reddit
A rose by any other name. It was designed specifically to reduce the decibel level of a firearm, just not by very much. The British still refer to suppressors in general as "moderators".
GumshoosMerchant@reddit
Has Ian ever done a video on one of these?
McStupidy@reddit
(W.A.G.) Maybe a combination of suppressor, break and a âboosterâ to make sure it cycles
joku75@reddit
Definitely looks like it
