Please settle an office argument - do you know the Birds Eye Potato Waffle song?
Posted by Diligent_Sun_5423@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 186 comments
I maintain that this was constantly on the TV throughout the 80s and 90s, but loads of people are saying they've never heard of it. Have i massively over-stated its cultural importance or do i work with a load of luddites?
TheInvisibleMango@reddit
Of course. BirdsEye potato waffles! Boil 'em. Mash 'em. Stick 'em in a stew. Who doesn't remember that song?
Hara-Kiri@reddit
How I want waffles.
thefootster@reddit
of course I have, they're waffly versatile!
nickspeeed@reddit
They go with beans and banger, fish fingers
StanleyChuckles@reddit
Beans, bangers, bacon, burgers, eggs in, eggs on, gammon, grill em, bake em, fry em, eat em!
stylesuponstyles@reddit
Stick 'em in a stew
deHaga@reddit
I always thought that was Mattesons

Mmmmm
FlashyProject1318@reddit
Fish fingers?
naalbinding@reddit
Fish fingers!
cuppachar@reddit
It won't wash off, it's the smell that lingers!
PickaxeJunky@reddit
Is it a play on words of "they're awfully versatile"?
I remember the advert well from when I was a kid, but I've never been sure what it was getting at?
thefootster@reddit
Yep that's it
PickaxeJunky@reddit
Thanks - I thought as much, but as a pkay on words, its a bit...crap.
So I've never been sure!
thefootster@reddit
It's an ad from the 90s of course it's a bit crap
Severe_chill@reddit
All these years I thought it was "awaffully versatile" my whole childhood was a lie.
DameKumquat@reddit
Oh, that! I don't recall a song but know the slogan.
Toastinho@reddit
I agree with this sentiment. Is it people your age denying it, or people in their 30s, as I think it may be more 80s than 90s
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
Just what I was going to say
yearsofpractice@reddit
You are correct. You are also old. All the best, a 49 year old man.
Dissidant@reddit
Birdseye potato waffles they're waffley versatile (with a cuckoo sound at the end)
That one?
leffe186@reddit
Grill em, bake em, fry em, eat em, waffly versatile!
Absolutely imprinted on my brain.
Longjumping-Toe-8643@reddit
You can stick them in the toaster too these days... allegedly
cloud__19@reddit
I do this when I'm drunk lol
Pin1888@reddit
Turn the toaster on its side, add cheese to the waffly versatile waffle, and then attempt to slide said waffle into the toaster. It works sometimes..usually when I'm pished.
Djinjja-Ninja@reddit
I tried this once.
Needed a new toaster afterwards due to a small cheese fire.
Pin1888@reddit
Ouch, sorry to hear that. Too much cheese, maybe?
Djinjja-Ninja@reddit
Is there such a thing?
cloud__19@reddit
Someone after my own heart there.
Sinnistrall@reddit
Does it not fling the waffles across the kitchen?
Pin1888@reddit
Never happened yet, but I do point it at the wall for minimal damage just in case.
Purp1eMagpie@reddit
I did this Friday morning for my breakfast
SophieSofasaurus@reddit
I found that they made my toaster nasty and greasy.
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
They are really good from a toaster
ScreamingDizzBuster@reddit
These days if you put them in the toaster you get put in jail.
Andros25@reddit
when did this come in
Deruji@reddit
Liz Truss I think
Purp1eMagpie@reddit
Pretty sure they put it as one of the cooking options on the packaging now
welsh_dragon_roar@reddit

This is the correct answer
pointedshard@reddit
Fuck that ad. For some reason it was earworm yesterday. And now it’s going to be again. And I have never eaten one of those fuckers.
bartread@reddit
Birds Eye potato waffles, they're waffly versatile
Grill them, bake them, fry them, eat them,
Waffly versatile! (cuckoo)
Reddit____user___@reddit
If I had to guess I’d say late 80s into early 90s and yes it was ubiquitous.
Not to mention 🎶waffly versatile🎶 😁
BulkyHulk78@reddit
Birdseye Potato waffles they're waffley versatile, grill 'em, fry 'em, cook 'em, eat 'em. Birdseye Potato Waffles, they're waffley versatile! Or something like that, hope it helps!
Triordie@reddit
They go with beans, bangers, bacon, burgers, fish, fingers, fish fingers, eggs in, eggs on, gammon, steak, chops.
Paamparaam@reddit
Yeah I always worried a little about the the non-fish fingers, but not so much it kept me up at night.
3lbFlax@reddit
The waffle ad (which to answer OP’s question is still burned into my brain half a lifetime later) always reminds me of a great song about supermarkets that Brian Cant sings on a Play Away LP, which includes the classic line “Oh no, it’s fish fingers - they’re pointing back”.
Ah, naturally it was out there for anyone willing to put in the effort - song starts at 3:11: https://youtu.be/4Xwsl3MDE6w
warksfoxile@reddit
The words, not the song.
Chicken Tonight, though......
HarB_Games@reddit
Well, I was born in 2004 and I know it.. however my house was full of folk on the spectrum that would randomly blurt out stuff as a stim.
bob_the_rod@reddit
The Mary Whitehouse Experience had a sketch that explored what would happen if Elvis Costello did the Potato Waffle song.
Dave91277@reddit
Now it’s in my head! Cheers for that! I couldn’t tell you what was on the advert but we all know the song!!
DieCuss@reddit
They're waffily versatile!
best-friends-arm@reddit
you would not believe how often my sister and I find an excuse to sing this. a banger
MundaneMums@reddit
I was singing it before I got to the end of the question. I didn't even know I still knew it.
Gobsmacked_Mongoose@reddit
Are you talking about… Now take your waffle by the hand Grill em, bake em, fry em in a pan They’re crisp outside with a fluffy inner Sausages, eggs, burgers too It’s up to you whatever you do So give the family some my-oh-my Potato Waffles from Birds Eye
I used to sing this when roller skating down a big hill holding onto my ankles 🤷♀️
biflux@reddit
Yep 👍 I’ve never (ever) bought any though.
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
I have never, nor will I ever buy birds eye potato waffles without saying to my husband they are waffly versatile
StockholmGirl29@reddit
Birdseye Potato Waffles, their waffly versatile!
OllyDee@reddit
Yes, sadly it’s burned a hole into my brain and now can never be forgotten.
Morazma@reddit
I was born in the early 90s and have no idea what you mean
Also lots of people probably didn't watch TV as much as you
cold_tap_hot_brew@reddit
That soundsso judgy. You didn’t have to sit glued to the tv for those jingles to get stuck in your head.
I remember phone numbers for car garages, insurance brokers and other useless things for a kid because I heard them on adverts. I never actually watched the ads.
Morazma@reddit
Calm down, you don't need to be so sensitive. I wasn't being judgement. I don't care how often any of you watch tv.
Appropriate_Cap_3458@reddit
Absolutely bizarre - The waffly Versatile song came in my head as an ear worm 2 hours before I saw this. Anyway they are Waffly Versatile.
Opposite_Radio9388@reddit
It took me decades to get that "waffley" is a nod to "awfully."
Future-Exercise-7433@reddit
It's a really bad play on words. I understood it years ago but I'm still annoyed about how bad it is
lady_faust@reddit
😯

EddieCase67@reddit
Me at 59 🤦🏻♀️
DivePotato@reddit
Grill them. Bake them. Fry them. Eat them Waffley versatile. Woo hoo.
TruthSeeker890@reddit
Lobster? Well it's my family favourite (a different advert I know)
HermioneGunthersnuff@reddit
I saw the League of Gentleman play the Birmingham NIA 26 years ago. At one point Steve Pemberton ad-libbed the Birds-Eye jingle in a scene where his character was meant to be talking gibberish. It brought the house down.
Granted it was a simpler time back then, but the point is we all got the reference.
jamesdownwell@reddit
Absolutely. I can go one further, there was a documentary on the telly back then which followed the day in a life of a kid and he obviously had the song stuck in his head cause he was singing it pretty much the whole way to school.
Postik123@reddit
I remember, "Bird's Eye Potato Waffles, they're waffley versatile." Then something about "beans" and "fish fingers" but I just start making the lyrics up at that point. Much to the confusion of my family who have no idea what I'm talking about.
TheLibrarian75@reddit
Yes, I do as I am Gen X and here is the advert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSq_Fhcckvo and oh no I now have a brain worm
veryblocky@reddit
No, but I was not alive during the 80s or 90s.
nellynottom@reddit

Birds Eye Potato waffles, waffley versitile.
Grill 'em, bake 'em, fry 'em, eat 'em.
No, I don't know what you're on about. Maybe they hope it's chips, it's chips?
martin8777@reddit
Or "fried onion rings"?

AthenaRedites@reddit
boidseye potado hwoff-olls
MaltDizney@reddit
I was a child of the 90s, and have no idea what this song is.
blumpkinator2000@reddit
Oh, we know it alright. Any time waffles are bought, cooked or served, we HAVE to sing it, using the proper OTT showtune-y voice. I think it might actually be a criminal offence not to.
Mumstheword76@reddit
Was literally singing it to my adult daughter the other day and yes, she thought I was mental.
remmy84@reddit
The one about them being waffley versatile?
FennelGlum357@reddit
It's possible that the ad was only shown in some TV regions - so might not be famous all around the UK
Pacopicopiedra66@reddit
Wife and I both late 40s and much to the chagrin of our teenage children, if the potato waffles are ever on the shopping list, then that jingle is getting SUNG
Hoop66@reddit
Not only know it, but have several alternative lyrics (that make no sense).
PocketOos@reddit
Waffley versatile
MissingScore777@reddit
I was born 85 and this is one of the more recognisable ads from my youth, up there with 'crisp and dry'.
I'd be amazed at anyone old enough to have memories back to the 90s not recognising this advert.
YoungGazz@reddit
They’ve got nothing on Shake N Vac
n3m0sum@reddit
The best version.
https://youtu.be/xOlk_3kyY9g?si=jEKbr3ognVPHWmOd

Bird's Eye Potato Waaaaffles, they're waffly versatile!

It's definitely a thing for 90s people.

JC_vee@reddit
Egg in, egg on, gammonnnn! Grill 'em, bake' em, fry 'em, eat' em. Bird's Eye potato waffles, they're waffle-y versatile!

bluntnwuk@reddit
They’re waffley versatile!
Street-Frame1575@reddit
Me as a kid: "Adverts don't work on me - I just buy what I want"
Me in the frozen foods section, over 40 years later: "...eggs in, eggs on, gammon, steak chops..."
I swear I'll remember that song long after I've forgotten my own name
oneconfusedqueer@reddit
Birdseye potato waffles, they’re waffley versatile.
That one? :)
davenuk@reddit
grill em bake em fry em eat em
wintermute023@reddit
You work with a load of luddites. My dad used to run the company that made these. He used to bring huge cardboard boxes of them home so we ate a lot of them.
https://youtu.be/Je3UGI1jMP8?si=dunBhYoqAwozbnBb
cinesister@reddit
My brain sings it whenever I see some in the freezer. I definitely know it.
emmjaybeeyoukay@reddit

You're welcome.
The_Phantom78@reddit
I hear they're "waffley versatile"
wolfwynd@reddit
I sing it quite often when I’m making said waffles 😅
JasonStonier@reddit
You absolute arse. That song was safely locked away in long-term storage, but now all I can hear from my internal monologue is "grill 'em bake 'em fry 'em eat 'em - Birdseye potato waffles, a-waffly versatile".
So that's my day written off.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
I absolutely do. It seemed it was played every ad break for a couple of years. And yes, I do randomly get it sick in my head and have to sing it, complete with a Cuckoo noise at the end.
Flash__PuP@reddit
Sang it yesterday while toasting waffles for my bacon and egg sandwich.
