Nissan’s New Xterra Will Be Priced Under $40K To Beat Ford’s Bronco At Its Own Game

Nissan’s North American chief announced that the new Xterra would be built in the U.S. and start under $40k.
“We’re at a time when the average transaction price in the US is $48,000, and it’s non-sustainable…[Nissan is] going to bring an Xterra below $40,000.”

Under $40k is the new under $30k just like how 30 is the new 20......
devastationz@reddit
People are getting onto you but idk why we’re pretending that 40k, isn’t an insane amount to be paying for a car?
Like, we all know wages have stagnated but everything has gotten so much more expensive.
Source
People are buying things that they’re barely able to afford and we can chalk up car prices to rising fuel prices, engineering and development costs, metal prices, precious metal prices, tariffs etc. but how much of it is just corporate greed?
We all look at Porsche prices and laugh. A 2022 GT3 was $162,450, now a 2026 GT3 is $238,150. How much of that is really engineering and development? How much of that really is tariffs or inflationary? We know that manufacturers make a lot of money just off their option packages. How much do those option packages really cost to implement?
Corporations know that it is more profitable to sell to wealthy high earners than to appeal to the ever shrinking middle and ever expanding lower class. But the vast majority fit into low class than the high class.
juuceboxx@reddit
$40k sounds like a lot for a car until you realize that's equivalent to $30k before COVID. $40k is the new $30k unfortunately, but it's more noticeable since most people's wages haven't kept up.
JournalistExpress292@reddit
100k+ miles isn’t crazy considering the amount of miles American drive.
Previous_Platform718@reddit
$115,000 is the cut off point for the top quintile of income in the US. Or to put it another way, 1 out of every 5 Americans could probably justify the purchase.
juuceboxx@reddit
Yeah COVID did a number on the value of the dollar. $30k in 2019 gets you around $39k in 2026. At this point we have to stop referencing prices from before 2020 because it might as well be a different currency altogether.
JournalistExpress292@reddit
Every time I see pre-COVID currency I’m astonished at how strong the dollar was; the change happened so slow and unnoticeable in what seems like forever - even though it was 6 years.
neueziel1@reddit
I remember when you could get a new bases carerra starting at 80k 10 years ok 😢

Yes things get more expensive over time.
Iriss@reddit
B. Bbbut.... I thought I locked in pricing in the 90s because I got used to certain numbers! No fair :(
BMWbill@reddit
I used to buy a whopper for 99 cents on Wednesdays! Now they are always $8. Bring back the 1980s!!
The-Ol-Razzle-Dazle@reddit
Yeah! If you aren't OK with the value of your labor being stolen, you're a dummy!
Iriss@reddit
But also, let me keep my current earnings, or that would also be unfair.
See, I should be able to afford all the things I want.
BMWbill@reddit
Exactly. I complain about prices all the time as an old guy while I marvel that my 17 year old makes $45/hr tutoring math
Personal_Smurf@reddit
The Wendy’s 4 for $4 used to come with a jbc AND 5 spicy nugs! Now it’s $6 and you only get 4 regular nugs. Bring me back to 15ish years ago.
IRideZs@reddit
$3 on Wednesday, but have to use the app
Iriss@reddit
Fuck an app.
f8Negative@reddit
Also dealer markup
UXyes@reddit
Yes. $40k today purchases the same thing $30k did in 2016.

Nissan has always made solid body on frame vehicles and they finally figured out they can take sales from Toyota and Ford.
Outofcontrolpilot@reddit
Exactly! The titan, frontier, armada, and xterra have always been solid and reliable products. Hell, if anything, 99% of the busted and broken Altimas you see running around should be a testament to Nissans ability to build a strong runner.
Mitchlowe@reddit
Ok then why don’t they sell? Why was the xterra selling 10% as many as 4Runner
Outofcontrolpilot@reddit
Poor marketing and bad consumer perception. Nissan makes solid vehicles but then cheaped out on their volume sellers which changed the perception of the every day buyer. Additionally, the XTerra originally emerged as technology slowly started to become heavily implemented into vehicles, they just failed to evolve. That doesn’t take away from their reliability and ability to build a great vehicle. Peep the Nissan Patrol, body on frame vehicles are Nissan’s jam!
JournalistExpress292@reddit
You’re telling me people buy based on the badge?
DALESR4EVER124@reddit
The 4Runner and Xterra looked wildly different. You had to really like the way the Xterra looked to want one.
Whereas, the 4Runner just looked like a regular old SUV.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
The 4Runner has had pretty aggressive styling for at least the last decade.
mastawyrm@reddit
Nissan CVTs and trash 4cyls killed their rep vs Toyotas legendary rep? Consumer actions aren't going to be reasonable
Drzhivago138@reddit
Most if not all of Nissan's BOF models in the US have used traditional automatics and NA V6s or V8s. Still, no one said the reason had to make sense.
mastawyrm@reddit
Oh I know what I said wasn't relative to the Xterra at all, just general brand stigma vs generally stupid consumers.
ShiftF14@reddit
Honestly what you’re saying about Altimas makes so much sense. Imagine the absolute abuse those things withstand
Outofcontrolpilot@reddit
Maintenance is not a word in Altima owners vocabulary!
Personal_Smurf@reddit
Bumpers hanging off, missing a mirror, lord knows when or if any of the fluids have been changed let alone tires, pads, or rotors.
nand0_q@reddit
Not to mention they’ve made some of the best looking trucks in the game.
I’m glad Nissan is focusing on their strengths.
GodLevelRedditor@reddit
Honda would be the real juggernaut if they took all that power sport equipment knowledge and made a real body on frame
man__i__love__frogs@reddit
I've owned a Pathfinder R51 and now a Frontier. There is nothing really to improve on the drivetrain IMO. It's mostly about features and pricing...this is the only place they fall a little short on competitors.
The VQs and transmissions Nissan has used on their body on frame platforms have always been bulletproof, slightly more power than Toyota with the same reliability.
Possible_Meal_927@reddit
Except no manual transmission
DocPhilMcGraw@reddit (OP)
Sounds pretty refreshing to hear Nissan admit they got it wrong and are trying to do everything to get it right.
aka_mank@reddit
🤞CarPlay, power windows, adequate torque, and mid tier safety tech.
SwayingTreeGT@reddit
Instantly gets criticized from online reviewers that it doesn’t have lane keep assist, hands free cruise control, and 3D surround view cameras
JournalistExpress292@reddit
Tbh all those are basically standard nowadays.
Infiniti/Nissan was the first company in the world to introduce 3D surround view so I doubt this car would NOT come with one.
Especially if it’s an off road trim.
porcomaster@reddit
that is easily solvable by giving option as add-ons, not standard.
mattmaster68@reddit
THIS!!!
Then when people go to check the reviews:
“Has outdated manual climate controls in 2026” then rate it 3/5 or some shit 😡
Shitboxfan69@reddit
"This $20k car has cheap feeling seats and plastics all over. 3/5"
Yea no shit its cheap
Sprinklypoo@reddit
I actively avoid most of that shit... I don't get people actively and intentionally trying to become worse drivers...
makeyousaywhut@reddit
TBF that’s what we love about the Rogue. 45k for an SV with a cosmetic package is pretty ridiculous until you realize just how much they packed in to it.
I hope Nissan doesn’t exclude these kind of things from the SL and platinum trims even if they focus elsewhere for the S and SV trims.
Nissan is currently packing real luxuries into more affordable packages then elsewhere, and a decent part of the market appreciates that
Onionsteak@reddit
Radio delete, crank windows, no airbags, 90's shitty explosive Firestone tires, instant rust the moment it rolls out of the factory or im not interested
geronika@reddit
I paid $32k for my two door Bronco in 2022. They are now $44k for the Base model.
k0fi96@reddit
If this is anything like Frontier prices this is a good sign. You can get a used pro 4x frontier for barely more than a brand new low trim Tacoma.
willpc14@reddit
I don't get how the value of a used vehicle reflects how a new one is going to sell. Especially if the point of the comparison is that Nissans don't hold their value well.
k0fi96@reddit
The point is I can get a fully loaded Nissan with 15k on the clock for cheaper than a new Toyota. Unless you swap cars every 18 months you don't want cars to hold their value. I want to be able to get into used cars for a good price.
willpc14@reddit
I kept my Tacoma 10 years and only lost $12.5k during that time. I would have lost another $8-10k on a Colorado or Frontier. Also, it's the same r/cars circlejerk that no one here is willing to buy new cars, but we'll wait for someone else to buy it, so we can buy a used one. Then we complain that all the cars we like get cancelled because they sell poorly.
Personal_Smurf@reddit
I recently bought a cpo pathfinder and sat in a frontier while at the dealer and it just felt so incredibly tight. I’ve never been in other mid sized pickups so idk if that’s just normal for the class or if that’s something with the frontier.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
If you’re used to full-size pickups, any midsize or smaller is going to feel tight. I get in an F150 or a Silverado and feel like I’m wearing my dad’s shoes. It’s nice, but it also won’t fit in my 1910s driveway.
yobo9193@reddit
The front seat of my Tacoma feels decently spacious but the rear seat is claustrophobic.
ForgotTheBeer@reddit
I’d say pretty normal for the class. My Tacoma is basically a Camry with a bed
howyinzdoingnat@reddit
Isn’t it more a 4 runner competitor? Not a bronco wrangler competitor
spongebob_meth@reddit
Nothing really competes with the wrangler since its the only thing offered with a solid axle outside of heavy duty trucks.
The bronco competes more with a 4runner objectively.
But I suppose objectivity is probably out the window with most people who will just buy one and then go on their respective subreddit and ask how to use 4wd.
popsicle_of_meat@reddit
From a technical standpoint, you're right. From a realistic standpoint, 99% of people buying a Wrangler don't care (or even know) about a SFA and what it means. And they definitely don't drive it hard enough to matter.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Right, which is where the 2nd part of my comment comes in.
Off-road capability is all "vibes" these days.
popsicle_of_meat@reddit
Exactly. I don't want to actually BE adventurous. I just want to LOOK like I am to everyone else. Haha. I've driven a few wranglers. Not a single one of them was something I would want to deal with as a daily.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Ehh, modern wranglers are fine. But i daily a motorcycle so my frame of reference is probably not conventional.
You want something that's miserable to drive, hop in an old CJ.
DALESR4EVER124@reddit
The 4Runners still use solid axles.
spongebob_meth@reddit
The 4runner has not had a solid front axle since 1985.
ItchyMcHotspot@reddit
In terms of class, the Pathfinder was Nissan’s 4Runner competitor. The Xterra was their entry level SUV before they came out with the Rogue and it was pitched as an “active lifestyle” vehicle aimed at younger buyers.
e2hawkeye@reddit
Didn't the original Xterra have a bump in a body panel specifically for a first aid kit? I remember that as being a artifact of them really selling it as a lifestyle vehicle.
yokramer@reddit
The Bronco is a 4Runner competitor not a Wrangler competitor too when it comes to actual off road performance. When it comes to lifestyle comparisons they are all competing with each other
T-Baaller@reddit
Most of the sales of the jeep and bronco are lifestyle, most do not care about SFA/IFS
Bronco and Wrangler are competitors in most people's minds as SUVs with removable doors.
XMAN2YMAN@reddit
Hard to say, they could go the war goat route and make it doors off and convertible too but I doubt that would be smart. Going after a cheaper alternative to the 4runner is the right idea. Especially with an NA v6, 33” stock but easily can accept up to 37”. Live rear axle and probably will be IFS. And then add the equivalent for a Sasquatch package to any and all Trims that upgrades the tires, adds lockers, and minor lift.
Knightrider319@reddit
Hopefully not trying to beat their recall numbers…
FictionalContext@reddit
It's own game? What, being a Jeep?
Jedi_Gill@reddit
They'll price it under 40K but can they force their dealerships to not jack up price since it will be under market value for this type of car. I really wish we passed laws banning dealerships. We should buy directly from the manufacturer and don't need them, similar to Tesla.
DALESR4EVER124@reddit
If it's actually under $40k I will go straight to my Nissan dealer when they're available and get one.
I'll believe it when it's real, but I'll give Nissan the benefit of the doubt.
BustedCondoms@reddit
Will still come with CVT
IAmWellBehaved@reddit
Not sure if it's meant to be a joke, but Nissan has never built a BOF vehicle with a CVT, nor any RWD platform vehicle for that matter, or any Xterra. It'll likely just pull the Jatco 9-speed from the Armada, etc.
BustedCondoms@reddit
It's a joke but ya'll brigaded in here at 8am to defend Nissan which is pretty weird tbh
Drzhivago138@reddit
See, the thing with jokes is that they have to be funny.
IsTheShibaInU@reddit
Same old lazy, tired comment on every thread is lazy and tired.
BustedCondoms@reddit
Is there a lot of Nissan posts or something? You replied sooo
IsTheShibaInU@reddit
Be more original. You can do it, I believe in you!
It'd make sense on a post about a Sentra or Altima; shitting out the same comment on posts about BoF or sports cars that have never had CVTs is boring and hackneyed.
BlazinAzn38@reddit
The current Pathfinder doesn’t even have a CVT, use your head
BustedCondoms@reddit
Nope, i refuse.
Vesuvias@reddit
Hmmm ok yeah will believe it when I see it. Even an ‘under $40k’ to me means they’ll strip out all the niceties of modern cars.
Sorry but can we just go back to the basics again?
f8Negative@reddit
So the dealers can mark it up another $10k
Mitchlowe@reddit
Didn’t the bronco start below 30k? And it didn’t even come out all that long ago. Also I doubt the xterra has removable roof or manual transmission. Xterra should focus on beating 4runner(it won’t) instead of going after a wrangler competitor
ITSHOBBSMA@reddit
So, MSRP $39,999. Which will be roughly just under $60K once the dealer is done.
5Gmeme@reddit
If they release a decent hybrid Xterra for around $50k CDN I will probably buy one January.
All I want is all wheel/ 4x4, decent audio and around 300hp and torque.
CubanLinxRae@reddit
Hope they stick to it sounds too good to be true
jrileyy229@reddit
These guys should just not make promises like this when the vehicle is still several years away... It always ends in a bad look. There's always some excuse why they tried but ultimately couldn't hit the price point... We all know it's coming.
piddydb@reddit
They could just as easily say “it will be more affordable than its direct competitors” but they want the flash of that headline
jrileyy229@reddit
I understand that... But it's going to get thrown back in his face in 2.5 years when it comes out and coats 43k
captainnowalk@reddit
It’s a promise that’s been heard multiple times by multiple vendors, but I hope they stick to it!
I am curious whether 4x4 is standard, or some sort of AWD system, or is the base going to be RWD only. I remember the originals having the RWD option, but I feel like, if you’re marketing this as a “true off-roader”, you’re gonna need some way to drive all the wheels, even on the base models these days. Even if it’s a cheaper AWD solution?
korko@reddit
Is there any reason to believe this isn’t just going to be a boxy Murano?
kanyediditbetter@reddit
Those 00s xterra’s and frontiers were fun ass shit and were phenomenal farm trucks for the price. I really hope it’s a return to those
Skika@reddit
Man I hope it’s got more cargo space than the Bronco and Wrangler. I’ve got 3 dogs, it’s the reason I haven’t ditched my 2015 Pilot.
sprockets22@reddit
This isn’t a a jeep or bronco. It’s a basic suv.
If they made the doors and roof removable, dog proof fabric, and a decent warranty I’d bite.
