What’s a good food to eat for breakfast, for someone that doesn’t eat breakfast?

So I’ve never been a breakfast person, the thought of eating as soon as I get up just makes me feel a bit sick, so I have to wait at least an hour anyway, the I usually just skip it altogether and wait until lunch, which i know isn’t really good. I’d really love to learn to enjoy breakfast but I literally can’t think of anything that I might enjoy early in the morning so I’d love recommendations that arent too heavy but still filling and substantial

Fruit & yoghurt - something light to get you started if your not keen on big meals 1st thing in the morning
Porridge with fruit/jam/honey
Overnight oats made with oats, chia seeds, dried fruit/frozen fruit, then add some fresh fruit in the morning (e.g. sliced banana)
Bowl of cereal - muesli, cornflakes, weetabix, or whatever
Toast with jam/honey/marmalade
Toasted crumpet
Scrambled eggs or mushrooms on toast
Bacon sandwich

Honestly if you don't need to eat breakfast, don't eat breakfast. There's no benefit to it but a lot of people are hungry when they wake up.
Personally I have a coffee and a banana at about 8 ( wake up at 5:30). Then lunch at midday and I'm never hungry.
marbmusiclove@reddit
‘There’s no benefit to it’ - there is, if you eat at meal times roughly according to your circadian rhythm, it gets those mechanisms going in your body. You store a lot less energy
CarrotOJ@reddit
I've been skipping breakfast deliberately (cutting down on calories) for over a year and felt fine. The past month I was on medication that needs to be taken with food in the morning. Done the meds yesterday and this morning without breakfast was AGONY. Oh well I know it'll only take some time to get used to it again.
Isgortio@reddit
This is what I find weird, I eat breakfast ONE TIME and my body wants it every day, and it takes about a week until I stop waking up hungry again.
stevebucky_1234@reddit
A lot of such medication can be taken with lunch, as long as your doctor is not pedantic. Best to check

bacon and eggs
ikiteimasu@reddit
English muffin and a bit of jam, cuppa tea. 👌
cankennykencan@reddit
Steak and eggs. Really food
Nokturno@reddit
150g fage yogurt. handful nuts. a piece of cut up fruit. bit of honey. all in a bowl
oceanicitl@reddit
Greek yoghurt, fruit, honey and granola. I dish up mine in a pot and bring it to work as I can't eat when I get up either. It's surprisingly filling and very healthy
Agitated_Horse24@reddit
Yoghurt is easy to get down if you don't have much of an appetite I find.
L-0-T-H-0-S@reddit
Greek yogurt with fruit, overnight oats, or just good, old fashioned toast with butter and marmalade.
EnvironmentalMine194@reddit
I make a tiramisu style over nights oats and it makes me look forward to breakfast knowing I enjoy it 😍
Bob_Fred_88@reddit
Ooh yes recipe please, that sounds yummy
tumshy@reddit
Tell me how to make this please?
Monstrrbleu@reddit
But full fat Greek yogurt! I tried eating fat free Greek yoghurt for breakfast and, first thing in the morning, it feels like eating concrete 😆
I'm back on porridge, I worry about protein later in the day lol
owmuch@reddit
Greek Yoghurt is how I started eating breakfast the last few years with honey at first then I worked up to adding berries etc.
Royal_View9815@reddit
My absolute favourite is Grapes, Apple, yoghurt and Granola.
pixelunicorns@reddit
I'm not a breakfast person and I'm still not, but what I found help is finding something that is healthy and I genuinely like. I like baking, so I have oat, blueberry, and lemon muffins at the moment, I don't put any sugar in them, its just honey so I find them a good option. I make them in a batch so I can have one or two depending on how hungry I am. I also reheat them in the microwave because they are tasty warm.
I do find eating earlier helps me tick off more of the daily nutrients I need. Plus it stops me craving junk food in the afternoon. I'm afraid it is trial and error, I've gone through so many recipes of porridge, overnight oats, granola, yogurt and fruit combos, and whilst I don't mind them occasionally I find it hard to eat something regularly that I don't enjoy.
PonsonbyTaniwha@reddit
I'm not a big breakfast person either and have waves of nausea in the morning so I opt for a fruit bowl nothing crazy or granola and yogurt or boiled eggs with toast. You can also try pastries like a croissant with tea I normally drink green tea or orange juice as well I find drinking something warm in the morning helps! x
Away-Organization630@reddit
Pizza, better than most cereals
teuchterK@reddit
I only started regularly eating breakfast once I became pregnant, and it’s now stayed with me. Prior to that, I’d be able to wake up and survive on cups of tea til lunch.
However, for someone who doesn’t like breakfast when they get up - I would recommend a yoghurt and a banana with a cup of your poison once you start work.
GroceryPlastic7954@reddit
2 bananas
NoodleDoodlesocks@reddit
Don't worry too much about it. It's not as important as the catchphrase might suggest. I too struggle with eating so early in the morning.
At most I just have a couple of slices of ham and a glass of water. Used to have it on a sandwich but even that was a bit much. Sliced meats in general I find the easiest to take. Some protein, surprisingly low calorie and not as heavy as bread or toast.
Holli303@reddit
Smoothie maybe? I eat slightly defrosted bananas cut into Greek yoghurt with cinnamon and vanilla too. Super refreshing, healthy, almost like ice cream but not too sweet.
Accurate-Ad9790@reddit
Fruit Corner with Aussie Bite.
dreadnought1057@reddit
I usually have what's known as a duck's breakfast, which consists of a drink of water and having a shit.
Majestic_Warthog_420@reddit
how do u have your shit.....fried boiled or whatever?
dreadnought1057@reddit
Just a regular poopy in the bath, of course.
tessatreeman@reddit
I only eat breakfast these days because of the medication I take requires food. But I also hate all breakfast foods lol, I tend to eat leftovers from the night before or whatever I’m craving. I also love a lot of Asian food and they eat rice for breakfast which I love! Try looking at what other cultures eat
IHateTheLetter-C-@reddit
I don't like breakfast either but faint if I don't, so if I'm really not feeling food I'll drink a smoothie or other liquid "meal"
SunAndStratocasters@reddit
"isn't really good" skipping breakfast and waiting until lunch is absolutely fine. Three meals a day is a myth. If you don't fancy it then don't force it on yourself.
Severe_Mastodon8072@reddit
Smaller, regular meals can help prevent some stomach symptoms. I used to skip breakfast (and sometimes lunch) for the same reasons as OP but my body throws a fit if I do that now lol.
Arguably not an issue if you’re not prone to that! But you wouldn’t know that you were until you already felt crappy, which I don’t recommend.
kestrelita@reddit
Skipping meals lowers my migraine threshold, so I'm a three meals (at least) a day gal. It's all about knowing your body isn't it - if you feel worse after eating breakfast or after skipping it, then your body is telling you what it needs.
SnooozeFezt@reddit
Exactly. I've been living on one meal a day and a few snacks for years.
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
Fruit & yoghurt is a good starting point.
Not-a-Cranky-Panda@reddit
I like to keep some Protein drinks just for this reason. I can just take it with me and have it at any yime if I need to.
Seanacles@reddit
Cottage pie it's a an evening meal try that for breakfast 👍
Sea-Still5427@reddit
I've never been one for breakfast either. Take a banana and a few nuts or an apple and some oatcakes if you like a snack mid-morning.
Serene_sloth@reddit
Rarely I wake up hungry and like you my breakfast is usually my lunch. If I am peckish first thing though, I like honey nut shredded wheat or just a slice of toast with butter. Usually a very small portion but it's enough.
wizzywoo22@reddit
A slice of toast with butter and marmalade
fleshcircuits@reddit
don’t limit yourself to breakfast food. sometimes i wake up and want pasta or a chicken wrap, so i just have that instead. but if you’re not a breakfast eater at all then don’t force yourself!
chroniccomplexcase@reddit
I have a protein drink- I can drink it over 45-60 minutes so it doesn’t feel heavy on my stomach but it fills me up and keeps me going until lunch time. I have a range of different flavours and alternate between 3 companies.
I have gastroparesis and have never managed breakfast well and always hated eating anything until well after 1-2pm. But this isn’t healthy, so someone suggested I try this and works well. I drink it over an hour as otherwise I would be sick but it also helps drinking it slowly with me not feeling like eating or wanting to eat. I stick it in a drinks bottle and it comes with me.
TheSecretIsMarmite@reddit
You don't have to eat breakfast if you don't want to.
SnooozeFezt@reddit
Granola Bar or Breakfast biscuits (like Belvita). A green smoothie is usually my go to, as I also struggle with breakfast.
No_Ring_3348@reddit
250ml of cold water as soon as you wakeup will start your guts working.
Suspicious_Banana255@reddit
Everyone is different, if you don't want breakfast and don't see any detrimental effects from not having it, then don't bother with it. If you do want something you could try a drink like a milkshake or smoothie.
Almanis46@reddit
I always keep frozen fruit for these morning. 160g fruit, top up with milk. Maybe some nuts. Blend and drink. Quite filling, nutritious, and easy to get down in the morning.
SadEntertainment1455@reddit
The first food item of the day after waking up is your breakfast. Two words break and fast. It’s only what you prefer to eat and when that matters.
LaWraa_with_a_W@reddit
Huel shakes or similar could work, as they fill you up a bit and have lots of vitamins, etc but drinking them doesn't feel like eating.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
I rarely eat breakfast. I'll get to 12-1pm and then maybe have some ham with fresh tomatoes, and an apple, or a couple of crumpets with yeast spread. Easily takes me through to dinner time with the family.
Ashamed_Housing7489@reddit
Protein powder with a little powdered oats for me
LibraryOfFoxes@reddit
I usually have a yogurt and some blueberries, or some porridge, or half a weetabix or tablespoon of muesli with some flax seed, rasins, and milk.
It's not too much or too heavy but it stops the ravenous hunger I'll get at about half ten if I don't have anything.
Full-Suggestion-1320@reddit
I'm the same, so I eat 2 dry plain biscuits, and then mid-morning, I eat Greek yoghurt, nuts, and fruit.
If you want something simple and filling, then overnight oats are a great option.
There are loads of recipes on BBC foods. This one is my favourite.
recipe
Pre made breakfast tray bakes are also a quick, healthy option. I like the tray bakes as you can grab them and eat when you get to work.
This is a hearty, cake-like version perfect for slicing and warming up during the week. Ingredients: 3 cups rolled oats, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup butter (melted), 3/4 cup brown sugar, 2 eggs, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp cinnamon, 3/4 cup raisins, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/2 tsp salt. Instructions: Mix all ingredients together, pour into a greased 9x9 baking dish, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35–45 minutes.
Or this one
High-Protein Oat & Raisin Tray Bake
Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups oats, 1/2 cup vanilla whey protein powder, 1/2 cup cashew butter, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/4 cup + 1 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tsp cinnamon.
Instructions: Mix ingredients, press into a lined 8x8 pan, and freeze for 10 minutes to firm up. This is a "no-bake" option that can be refrigerated for a firm bar texture.
Outrageous_Shirt_737@reddit
If you’re not hungry, you don’t need to eat anything. If it’s not affecting you, I wouldn’t worry about it. I get light-headed if I don’t eat breakfast but if you can function until lunch time it’s absolutely fine. If you really want to eat something, you can eat anything you want. You don’t need to limit yourself to “breakfast foods”.
_rayn3r_@reddit
the saying ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’ was a kelloggs marketing phrase iirc, if ur not hungry at breakfast then don’t eat it. there’s nothing wrong with only eating when ur hungry, as long as ur still consuming enough food
sheepandlambs@reddit
I usually have a portion of fruit. I tend to just take a punnet of grapes to work.
KelpFox05@reddit
Don't force yourself to eat something you're not hungry for and you won't enjoy.
I rarely eat breakfast, unless it's a day where I need to wake up early, or I know I'll be busy around my usual lunchtime and will need to eat later, in which case I'll have a protein bar or something similarly prepackaged. I recommend Barebells, they're pretty expensive but actually taste good, unlike some other popular protein bar brands.
insistirac@reddit
Strong food, protein, fats. Morning is the best time for it. If you eat carbs you will be hungry for the whole day despite eating.
flibz-the-destroyer@reddit
I mean, you’ve got to break your fast eventually, right?
Never_trust_dolphins@reddit
I can't eat as soon as I get up either, so I get up earlier to allow time for my appetite to catch up. I normally end up having a three egg omelette with bacon and cheese, a full English, or if I'm feeling like something small, goats cheese and honey on toast
mcnutty96@reddit
I do a smoothie of a banana, oats, milk, frozen berries and peanut butter.
I find its quick enough for the morning tastes great and gets me some fibre
BreqsCousin@reddit
I second having something that you drink rather than eat
Zealousideal-Sail893@reddit
Activia fruit yoghurt would set you up nicely.. Fling in a few seeds.
MaxieMatsubusa@reddit
You don’t have to eat breakfast if it doesn’t work for you - just eat a larger lunch if you feel you’re not eating enough.
Organic_Reporter@reddit
I rarely eat breakfast. Sometimes, at the weekend, I'll have a late breakfast. Usually bacon and egg sandwich or toast.
At work, I don't usually get hungry until late morning and my lunch break is at 12 so I eat a decent lunch then. Very occasionally, if I'm hungry around 10am I'll have a small bowl of cereal or a piece of fruit.
Katharinemaddison@reddit
I tend to eat between ten and twelve, usually depending on when I last ate the night before (accidental 16/8 fasting!). Not breakfast food because it never seems appealing.
I usually eat just what I’d eat for lunch. There’s no rule. People used to eat cold meats, devilled kidneys, pork chops for breakfast. It’s literally just the first meal of the day (when you break your fast).
lalajia@reddit
Plain breakfast biscuits (I go with belvita)
Trojanguido@reddit
The notion that breakfast is the most important meal of the day was an advertising mantra that stuck.
ben_jamin_h@reddit
You don't need to eat breakfast.
'Breakfast is the most important meal of the day' is an advertising slogan first promoted in 1917 by Kellogg's. It's not a fact. It's a marketing ploy.
Suitable-Tough5877@reddit
I think idea that breakfast is the most important meal of the day was just made up by Kelloggs... so, probably cornflakes.
Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
An apple.
Heavy-Mud-8307@reddit
Soup. Sounds so weird but if you're not that hungry you can mix in some unflavoured protein powder and have had a hydrating hit of vitamins(depending on the soup) to start your day. You can batch cook and microwave it per portion.
bonjajr@reddit
Ground oats a good for on the go
Laescha@reddit
If you're not hungry, why eat? You can always have a snack mid morning if you get hungry later.
KezzyKesKes@reddit
Greek yogurt, berries, granola and a drizzle of honey if you like.
Protein shake with milk are usually my two options.
Like yourself, I don’t like to eat breakfast and would rather run off black coffee.
