hi,
i am looking into buying a tesla, not my first choice of a car but i really can’t handle gas prices right now. i want to buy it used on finance but i dont know if i should wait till the Chinese evs come out. will the teslas drop in price? will the Chinese ev be better instead? i live in canada so the gas prices here are going absolutely insane. i also dont want to have oil changes engine worries and stuff. can someone give me some advice?
thank you!

Get a prius. Problem solved
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i don’t like Prius
EGGWURST@reddit
Do you dislike Prius more than you dislike gas prices? Sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too. That car gets 50mpg and hardly needs any repairs even over 200k miles
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
yeah i reallly don’t like Prius’s at all
EGGWURST@reddit
There are also other Toyota models that come in hybrid, Camry, Corolla, Hylander, rav4
bobqzzi@reddit
Don't buy a car from Nazis
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i wish i had that option
bobqzzi@reddit
Buy a Hyundai
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i’ve heard hyundais are not realiable ?
bygoneOne@reddit
It depends on the model.

Get a prius

This is all panic rationale. Unless you're incredibly savvy in the car world, you lose money when you sell a car and you lose money when you buy a car. If your current car is worth 15k, when you trade it in you'll get like 12k. If you buy a Tesla worth 25k, the moment you leave the dealer, it's worth 22k. Between the two transactions you've just lost 6k. You can buy a whole hell of a lot of petrol for 6k
Weekly_Amphibian_666@reddit
DOGE eliminating USAid killed about a million impoverished children and devastated American farmers. That's what I see, when I see a Tesla. Also the Nazi salutes. But you do you.
bubajofe@reddit
Personally I prefer a BYD as far as electric cars go. Is a small petrol car an option for now?
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i’d rather purchase something that is worth my money rather than spending on a small petrol car with other issues and stuff. do u have any idea when the byd car will come to canada? i heard they’re in process?
Winstonoil@reddit
The BYD will arrive in Canada this year. There will be a few at the beginning and then there will be plenty. I’m not that interested in EV’s however I have heard that the Chinese are way ahead of everybody else. With their introductory models to Canada it would behove them to sell quality from the beginning.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
so do u think it’s worth the wait?
bubajofe@reddit
I think they're worth the wait. I felt like the BYD drives and feels like a "normal" car. Great tech inside without being too overbearing. Hopping into a tesla felt like i was driving a piece of tech shaped like a car
Winstonoil@reddit
Absolutely worth the wait, and I would not buy one immediately. I’d want to find out what the customers truly thought. The Chinese are coming up with some incredible technology as far as Batteries go. Apparently there’s some very recent information to look into that I’m not well versed enough to explain. Don’t be in any hurry, look before you leap.

Mid 2026 according to this post. I'm in Australia so we have quite a few EV brands in Australia. Whilst I haven't tried the KIA, my friend owns one and he seems to like it commuting approx 60km-100km each day
norf937@reddit
If your waiting for Chinese EVs to come out you might be waiting a long time.
Teslas are great, we’ve owned 5 now with no issues. Currently in an S Plaid which is a blast of a daily.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
do u think i should buy it brand new or used?
Winstonoil@reddit
Don’t buy a Tesla. When BYD hits Canada the value of Tesla will drop through the floor.
norf937@reddit
People have been saying Tesla is gonna fall for 15 years now lmao, it’s done the opposite.
Winstonoil@reddit
I definitely would never support Elon or any of his businesses. America has shown Canada that they don’t give a fuck about about us. If you look at any major car manufacturer on the planet they will tell you that Chinese EV’s are going to blow everybody else out of the water. The CEO of Honda said that recently.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i do agree with u on that, i am in no rush so i have time to wait for the chinese evs!
Winstonoil@reddit
While you’re waiting you’ll have plenty of time to check out some of the new technology that they have. I’m completely a petrol head. But BYD is very impressive to look at.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
ou okay and if u were me would u go for the tesla or the byd
Winstonoil@reddit
The BYD hands down. I wouldn’t look at a Tesla, the only people who love them are Tesla freaks. However if you have 3 to $4000 to spend on a 2005 kind of era Camry or Civic you’ll have a really good car to drive cheaply for a year or more and then be able to sell it at the same price when you go to buy your BYD.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
tbh you are making the most sense out of everyone rn! i will consider 05 Camry like the car i have rn is not a bad car what so ever it just eats gas like crazy
norf937@reddit
I like to buy them a year old & used with 10-15k miles.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
yeah i can def see the tesla hate lol but its just what im thinking is efficient for me i just want more opinions
Squozen_EU@reddit
My opinion is that financing a car because of temporary fuel price increases is idiotic. Buy an EV when your current car dies or when you can afford to pay cash for a decent used one.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i mean yeah i understand that but my house hold has 4 drivers and only two cars. the car i currently have is shared with my mom but i make the payments on it anyway. i can afford to do so. my thought process is why not get a car ill like and give my mom the one i have currently. it’s not idiotic, u just don’t know the whole story!
Squozen_EU@reddit
Oh god, you’re still paying off your current car and now you want to start financing another one..?
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
hi so, i can afford too! plus the car i have right now will transfer to my mom.
Squozen_EU@reddit
Why are you bitching about fuel prices if you’re happy to waste money on finance? Your post makes no sense.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i wasn’t bitching! sorry i offended you!
Squozen_EU@reddit
“i really can’t handle gas prices right now”
You clearly can, so what would you call it if not bitching? 😉
In your situation I would wait out the current fuel shock, pay off the existing car completely, then properly plan a replacement, rather than just taking on financial burden because you don’t like seeing a number on a sign go up 20%. Actually run the numbers to see what financing is costing you. You say you can afford it, but that’s not really the point. Money wasted on a car loan is money that isn’t going into a pension or being saved towards a house deposit, for example.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
okay u asshole u need to chill tf out lol🫶🏻i already own a house btw two as a matter of fact not that u need to know that anyway. i want a new car so i was asking for advice. “i cant handle gas prices” was more so me saying i dont want to deal with gas! i don’t like standing at a gas station at 1 am filling up my tank its unsafe! my current car is also very unsafe, it shakes when i drive on the highway, doesn’t pick up speed at all what so ever, slips like crazy even if theres winter tires on it!
so actually i’m not bitching babes i’m asking for advice so thank you for urs!
Squozen_EU@reddit
If your car is shaking at highway speed it sounds like it needs a wheel alignment. Take it to the mechanic before giving it to your mother. 👍
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
yeah my dad said that too, i will do that thank you!
JipJopJones@reddit
If gas prices are killing you - what makes you think you can afford to finance a vehicle?
If finances are your true motivator - find yourself a cheap ecobox gasser or hybrid and live debt free.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
they’re not killing me necessarily i just do not like the idea of having to fill up my car every 3 days…
jestem-lama@reddit
What car are you driving that makes you need to refuel every 3 days?
Getting EV is not exactly going to extend your refuel intervals. You need to charge it every day.
If that's the concern get yourself a diesel. I fuel up my 320d every 2-3 weeks, but that's because I don't like seeing the needle below the 1/2 mark. I get around 1000km per 60l tank, so that would be 600miles for americans.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
i drive a nissan kick 2022 i understand the concern of charging it everyday but then on the other hand im thinking that i wont need to worry about engine issues oil changes all that kinda stuff
Anistappi@reddit
To me this sounds like you just want an EV, not that you actually need one or that it makes short term sense financially or otherwise.
In the long run an EV absolutely will be cheaper to drive and maintain than a comparable ICE car, but it's not going to be cheaper day one. And if you're going from a Nissan Kick to a Tesla, you're not going to save enough on gas and repairs to make it financially sensible.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
in a sense yeah, i have been looking into getting a new car for myself so i was considering evs im not against other opinions thats why i made this post asking for advice. obviously im not buying anything tomorrow im weighing out my options and then i will come to a decision
Anistappi@reddit
Yeah I'm not judging, just saying that in your post you used the gas prices as a reason for a switch, and short term you're not going to save anything by buying a more expensive vehicle. I've had my car for five years now and I've also been itching for a switch even though it doesn't really make any sense.
But if you decide to go for an EV, just like with any car buying used is always going to make more sense financially than buying new. Make a spreadsheet with all types of costs laid out to make a financial comparison, it can be very eye-opening.
When I bought my current BMW (this is in Europe, so it's a diesel) five years ago I made one, and even though I originally had my eye set on either an EV or a hybrid the spreadsheet showed me that with my daily driving the diesel was going to make more financial sense. It was between the 520d and a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and in hindsight I think the Bimmer's a bit more of a car than the Outlander is.
If you do buy used you want to make sure the car has plenty of battery warranty left, especially since with some brands you can't switch out parts of the battery system but need a complete overhaul, and that's often ridiculously expensive.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
oh yeah i totally get what ur saying im def not making any decisions immediately i was trying to get a bunch of different insights from others! i think i just use the gas prices as an excuse to convince myself in way? if that makes sense! i also do wanna say that i didn’t mention in my post, my car right now is super super unsafe it’s very very shaky when i drive it over 90kms it doesn’t pick up speed and it slips like crazy. idk if that makes sense but my dad also says to avoid driving it on the highways when it rains and snows because of how badly it shakes and slips. we have a gmc yukon that drives fine in rain and great in snow, i do understand that it’s also a heavier truck so it makes sense why it feels safer but yeah, thank you for ur advice!
i do definitely agree im not gunna buy anything new it will be used but i will definitely make sure that if it is an ev it’ll have all the warranties and stuff
jestem-lama@reddit
I mean yeah, but you can just buy an older, known to be reliable car, spend at least 10 times less that you would on EV and still have plenty of money left to service and fuel the thing, without having to go into debt.
JipJopJones@reddit
How many kms do you drive daily? If you're filling up every 3 days an EV isn't going to serve you well.
You might think about going PHEV or Hybrid.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
that’s the thing i drive to work and back i’m never too far away from home but the car i currently own is a nissan kick from 2022 and its eats gas like CRAZZZYYY. my mom also uses my car too so yeah that adds some kms too but i usually fill the gas so ive just noticed the past two months im filling it up every 3 days. gas here is currently 1.89 in my area so its just really annoying to me
1995LexusLS400@reddit
You drive 225km a day? If not, there is something very wrong with your car because that how much range a Nissan Kicks has.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
tbh yeah it gets to that point sometimes cause not only do i go to work and back my mom does too and then errands throughout the day dropping my siblings off to their practices etc by the end of day 2 usually im below 150kms
1995LexusLS400@reddit
There's something very wrong with your car then. That's 75km a day, not 225km a day. 225km every 3 days range out a full tank instead of the 675km it's supposed to get. Take it in for diagnostics. If there's nothing wrong with it, it's your driving habits that are the problem. A full tank only lasting 225km means you're getting fuel economy of 20L/100km, which is twice as much fuel as my V8 Lexus uses.
Federal_Scholar_6365@reddit (OP)
when the tank is full it’s only 450km not 675km. i am a very responsible driver too haha i like to take car of my things so i dont speed dont brake unnecessarily and all the other stuff
Dolphin_Princess@reddit
There are plenty of reasons to buy a Tesla but gas prices and ease of maintenance should not be amongst the top 10. If fuel prices and maintenance are the main motivator I would suggest a Toyota Prius.
Not sure if they will ever be available in North America. But if they are, they will be better and Tesla will drop in price. We have seen this pattern in Asia and Europe.
ScaredLink8@reddit
At least your not having to fill with 93, stupid tuned N
glockjs@reddit
id wait. looks like canada is opening up to chinese ev soon. the prices *should drop. its happened in a few markets so far.
beyond that in 6 mo id figure we'd have a better idea on the timeline of sodium ion ev's. which right now is looking like a game changer in cold weather.
dmforjewishpager@reddit
byd will have a insane tariff. jus but used tesla
