Sewers- where do y'all buy fabric since Joann's closed?

Found this in the Denver sub and I thought I’d ask yall the same thing.
Current_Analysis_104@reddit
I thought that said sewers like the drainage system! lol! That’s confusing!
TX_Farmer@reddit
Same! I was like, oh grate! Sewers? 🤪seamstresses?
SeekThem@reddit
i believe the preferred term is “sewists” to avoid the sewer connection haha
Current_Analysis_104@reddit
Now THAT I understand! Thanks!

Wondering that myself but mainly for dead stock and/or used fabric I can find in person

Since we're on the subject, what about yarn?
lovelylotuseater@reddit
If you are specifically looking for a franchise store with brands that were formerly JoAnn exclusives, Michaels has bought distribution rights for those and has been directly marketing itself as taking over JoAnn products.
If you’re wanting to swap to local, we have a few great little yarn stores. They do tend to focus on natural fibers which of course come with a higher price tag, and you need to make sure you buy all the yarn you need for your project from a single dye batch, which can lead to people buying extras and ballooning out their stash.

We are not plumbing.

Sewer is a proper English word for a person that sews and sewers is a perfectly acceptable plural, depending on where an individual falls on the octopus debate.
That said, “sewist/sewists” is a contemporary word that is still niche but has been picking up popularity as an alternative to sewer/sewers.

Childress on Good Latimer, but they have mostly upholstery fabrics
emc3o33@reddit
Anyone here remember Boca Bargoons? It was pretty much all upholstery fabric, but such a fun place to shop.
KarmaLeon_8787@reddit
Yes!!

Hoops and needles in Plano is quickly becoming one of my favorite stores. Fabric fanatics and not your mama's quilt shop are nearby and worth checking out too. I really like urban spools in Dallas too.
chaotic-_-thoughtful@reddit
I buy a lot of fabric. Mostly ordering from NYC these days, but locally, there are still a number of places to go. All those shops on Perth like Fabritopia, Petra's, Wherehouse. Richard Brooks, too.
Search for fabric stores on Yelp. You'll get a nice list.
But also, what kind of fabric are you looking for?
TentacleKitten@reddit
Do you have a recommendation for linen or wool garment fabrics? Last I checked down on Perth they didn’t really have many options in the way of natural fibers for garments. Even their knit fabric prints were a bit too busy for my liking.
I keep waffling on buying fabric online, not being able to be hands on with it is hard.
pollyatomic@reddit
Illumination Fine Fabrics in Fort Worth has them! I love the shop and the owner there- it’s worth the drive.
lovelylotuseater@reddit
I predominantly use it for silk, but if you’re comfortable dying cloth, https://www.dharmatrading.com is what I use for natural fibers. Some of their cloth is dyed solid colors but far more is just shades of while.
Onionringlets3@reddit
I like Petra's for African prints
JoyfulCor313@reddit
Same. Mood.com mostly, but if I’m not being picky and just shopping sales, I search the Shop app and compare prices.
MidnightRhinestone@reddit
I recently moved here and have been looking for fabric stores (hoping to find a trim store too) so thank you for posting and sharing! I came from NYC and I know the garment district is one of its own kind but hoping to venture here too
pollyatomic@reddit
What kind of fabrics are you looking for? I quilt and also make bags and garments, so I have several favorite places! Unfortunately the options here are spread out, but there are definitely some good ones.
Urban Spools has tons of modern quilting cottons and have recently added garment fabrics to their store. Quilt Country in Lewisville is also adding garment fabrics, though I'm not sure they have a lot just yet. For a gorgeous variety of garment fabrics and trims, I highly recommend going over to Illumination Fine Fabric in Fort Worth. I also like McKinney Knittery, but I don't make it up that way as much since I can usually find what I'm looking for at either Urban Spools or Illumination and I love them both so much.
MidnightRhinestone@reddit
Right now just the basics! I design festival and costume wear so eventually when I need spandex/performance fabrics I’ll need to look! Thank you SO much for your comment, it truly helps me like no other :)
pollyatomic@reddit
You’re welcome! I don’t think any of those have spandex unfortunately, but Illumination might. She’s great at keeping her website up to date, so you can definitely check before driving out. Urban Spools doesn’t have spandex but they know the shops on Perth well, so they could probably tell you where to look. They used to do some cosplay design classes, so even if they don’t have the materials they’ll know where to find them. The owner is Steffanie and she is a wealth of information.
Friendly-Brief-86@reddit
Michaels if I need something specific. Otherwise, the bedsheets section of a thrift store. You can get a decent amount of fabric very cheaply there.
Midnight-69@reddit
I go to estate sales and thrift stores decontruct embroidered blankets & pillows too
Kind_Strike_9026@reddit
My favorite online are Girl Charlie (deadstock and really good prices) Sincerely Riley has amazing deals and sales but you have to be quick(Facebook or email notifications) In person I go to the fabric district over off Harry Hines as mentioned above but you really need time on your side because there is a lot to look at and several stores to browse.
SheJigOnMySawTilIPuz@reddit
I primarily buy from thrift stores. My favorite thrift stores right now is Thrift City in Richardson. They often have bundles of sewing supplies as well for like $5 with tons of spools of thread and whatnot.
odd-mod@reddit
Urban Spools usually has a good selection of contemporary designer fabrics (think Ruby Star, Alexander Henry, Anna Maria, Tula Pink); mainly light to medium weight cotton/cotton blends for quilting, clothing and home projects. They're in the fabric district @ Walnut Hill & Monroe
QuestionableProtip2@reddit
Mostly online or the FBM. The real apocalypse for buying fabric here in town was when the tornado back in 2018 took out Super Textiles.

This post is so wholesome! :)

The Library! It's FREE! Some of it, anyway... there is a craft supply swap this Saturday the 25th: https://dallaslibrary.librarymarket.com/event/craft-supply-swap-473430
Fragilistix@reddit
Along with the standard Harry Hines collection: Illumination fabrics in Ft Worth, Urban Spools off Monroe and Walnut Hill,
Brave-Strength-6888@reddit
i have been using local fabric stores and thrift shops mostly, and sometimes ordering from sites like mood or etsy
SaltyCurrent4975@reddit
Fabric Direct. Good prices and customer service. I miss Jo-Ann's tho 😭
Brassanthe@reddit
Definitely the fabric district off Harry Hines and Perth.
anuspizza@reddit
Quilt Country in Lewisville is a favorite of my mom!!
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Whatever happened to Fabricland? (Or were they only a California establishment?)
And the proper plural term is, *Seamstrii iirc.

This is GREAT to know; I never knew but am today years old when I learned this!

Michael's! Hobby Lobby! Wal-Mart, too has a pretty sprawling section for sewers as well.
lovelylotuseater@reddit
The Dallas fabric district is a cluster of shops off Harry Hines and Perth, and except when there was something specific I needed, I have consistently preferred it to JoAnn. Better prices, better selection, better quality.
I would recommend browsing all of the shops, they each have their own vibe and you will decide on your favorite. I would not call any of them duds, they’re just different.
