Ridstar q20

I got a used Ridstar q20 for around 1000 CAD 2 days ago and I’ve really enjoyed it. Just now I saw the CPSC warning about the battery getting caught on fire for 11 people and warns people not to get it. The guy I bought it from listed it before the paper released so I don’t think he sold it for that reason. I’m not sure what to do since the Ridstar is my first ebike and I really like it.

Ridstar is the ghetto hoodrat bike for those who can't afford Surron
Dustin4vn@reddit
and surron is for douchebag who too entitled to ride a proper dirt bike.
Super-Frame677@reddit
Or for those not wanting to piss people off with engines louder than the fucking dinosaurs they're powered by? You're generalizing all Surron riders by the worst ones, which isn't accurate. And they are real dirt bikes, just electric ones.
If you're just dismissing electric dirt bikes in general, you might want to take a look at something like the Stark Varg. It makes more power and way more torque than 450cc gas bikes while being fully electric. They're evolving fast, whether people like it or not. Pretty soon those dinosaur bikes will be mostly irrelevant, for better or for worse. Don't get me wrong, I like a loud engine sometimes too, but you can't just dismiss electric dirt bikes as "not real" or "improper".

I just dont wanna spend that much money on a bike

The fuck does this have to do with OPs post? Take your hate elsewhere, and quit talking down on someone else's ride. Piss off dude.

Honestly just be careful and remember the fact that the battery can quickly turn into a fireball, and take proper precautions.
Take the battery out of the bike to charge and try to charge the battery in an open space if you can, with a decent amount (I'd say maybe 7 feet, more if you have the space) of non-flammable space on each side. You could try to find a thick metal box to charge the battery in to be extra safe. Keep an eye on it while riding and be prepared to quickly get off the bike if you see smoke.
You'll likely be fine though as long as you are careful.
Oh and absolutely never leave it charging overnight or while you're out of the house.

I do charge the battery outside, but I read that it takes almost 10 hours for a full charge, and I left it overnight last night
Super-Frame677@reddit
Oh if you're charging outside that's probably fine overnight, just try to charge it a decent bit away from your house and maybe cover it with something (preferably non-flammable) in case it rains/snows. And don't charge it in freezing temps or super hot temps.
Keep an eye on overnight weather if you're charging overnight outside.

Alright thanks for the advice, I really like this bike so hopefully nothing goes wrong

They have these fire proof box/bags you can get to put the battery in while it is charging. The bags I'm not sure how good they are, but I think the metal boxes probably will be better. get one of those when you charge it outside.
enjoy your rides!
I did think about getting the Q20 Pro, dual battery a couple of years ago. but still want the Amyet S8, they don't ship to Canada tho so no luck.
Super-Frame677@reddit
The bags do next to nothing against lithium fires, boxes are really the only option. They should be pretty good.
Visible-Smile5429@reddit (OP)
What do you mean by metal boxes btw?
Super-Frame677@reddit
Just pretty much whatever thick metal container you're able to find. Just something fireproof to charge the battery in.
Visible-Smile5429@reddit (OP)
Any idea where a I can get a decently sized metal box?
Super-Frame677@reddit
No idea, sorry. What you could do is build a box of sorts out of fire brick to charge in. That would be quite difficult, but it's an idea.

Yeah the amyet definitely is a better choice if your buying a brand new ridstar. Did you end up buying anything else yet?
RichTrifle1785@reddit
Replace the battery as soon as you can afford to. The Ridstar uses fairly common Hailong batteries I assume, so you can probably buy one with the same power pins and then send the old battery to a battery disposal facility. You can even buy a 52v battery.
Visible-Smile5429@reddit (OP)
Do you have any recommendations from where I can buy a battery?
skima_0@reddit
Only select units are recalled.
Tomj_Oad@reddit
Store it outside so you don't burn your house down?
Visible-Smile5429@reddit (OP)
Well yeah I do that but pretty sure the problem is while riding it
Tomj_Oad@reddit
Most battery fires apparently the appen during charging
