ULPT Request: How to get someone out of the shower.

Put a smart valve inline with the cold water supply to the hot water. Set a timer for 30 minutes every time she turns on the water to the shower. When the timer goes off shutoff the hot water. She will complain, tell her the hot water tank isn't able to keep up with long showers. She will shower faster.

And these days you can add a remote valve turner without having to do any plumbing for pretty cheap. Set up a routine on your phone, when she goes in it shuts the valve after x minutes, opens back up after y minutes.

That sentence made no sense. You need a plumber or plumbing skills to successfully install such a valve. If the hot water tank doesn’t have flexible lines you might have to cut and rethread pipes. Also you need a good WiFi connection to reach the tank which is likely in the basement, attic or garage. The cheapest remote cutoff valve is over $100 and most are $500 or more. And if you don’t own the house (rental house or apartment) it’s likely illegal to modify plumbing.

So “cheap and easy” needs a lot of clarification.

My water heater have always had spin valves like an outdoor spigot (not the 90 degree kind) and I have never seen a device like what the other guy showed which runs a 90 degree cutoff for you. Maybe all over the world it’s different but I have only lived in New York and NC and this has been my experience.

Also those cutoff valves are not designed to play shower games with, turning them off and on, especially on the hot water side. You can make jokes and downvote me, but if you keep turning them multiple times per day the handle will break within a year or two.

i just had to remove a bidet from my daughters apartment because the landlord had threatened an inspection and they would force a plumber to remove it at her expense. I am sure if she installed a hot water cutoff device they’d be super pleased.

If your sister has ADHD or another neurodivergent condition, she may experience time blindness and only realizes how much time has passed when you get home because it’s a change of environment. You could try a more passive approach too and text before you leave work. You can state that showering right when you get home is really important for you, and you recognize she also needs to shower so what ideas does she have? A collaborative approach that is calm while asking her for help may avoid fighting.

When I had teenagers taking endless showers, if I saw either of them heading for the shower I switched off the furnace. With the furnace off they had about 10 minutes of hot water and then it turned icy.

They griped about the fact that I never got the furnace fixed, but they took 10 minutes showers. 😂

My shower will get cold as soon as the pipes between the gas boiler and the shower itself get cold... in about 15 seconds or less.

All I have to do is turn the boiler off, which is just press a button.

Alternatively, cut the gas mains feed, which is turning a valve 90° and before that, opening the door under the kitchen sink.

I can cut the mains power, which is opening the cupboard door, but if the lights in the bathroom go off people might notice.

My younger siblings did this all the time.

They made everyone else late and left no hit water for anyone else.

Initially I dumped ice water on them in the shower, but our parents got mad.

Eventually I figured out that almost every hit water has a spigot which allows one to turn on/off the flow of heater water out of the heater.

After 15 minutes I would go and just turn that shit off.

Within about 45 seconds I would hear a shout.

Once they got out I turned it back on.

It took them about 6 months to figure out what I was up to.

As someone who has spent some time in the Italian Army in the 80's I feel compelled to explain what a "gavettone" is.

See, back in the day barrack showers were only available twice a week for a few hours at a time. There were lots of us and we all wanted and needed to shower. The math was simple: 120 minutes divided by however many of us having to shower. Usually a couple of minutes each. To avoid someone from overstaying his time you'd armed yourself with a bucket of sorts, usually a canteen ("gavetta" in Italian) filled with cold water. At 121 seconds you'd splash it on the poor bastard who had not been quick enough and push him out of the way.

The gavettone extended to people who would oversleep and were met with a bucket of cold water while still in bed.

It works perfectly at home too: find a small pot or a large cup, fill it with cold water and poor it on your sister from above the shower curtain or door. She won't see you coming which makes the Gavettone all the more effective. Repeat every 5 minutes or until she starts crying. Simple and effective

Our adopted son use to take hour to two hour showers. It was insane, and finally I asked him what he was doing in there. He’s autistic, so his response of “I like how the water feels against my skin” made sense. Ended up ordering a shower wizard. Haven’t had an issue since! He gets a programmed 20 minute shower and the water shuts off. The nice thing is when the shower head is getting close to timer it’ll pulsate letting you know you’re running out of time. There is a button you mount with double sided tape to activate it. There is also a programmable cool down timer between pushing the button. I have that set at a half hour. Turn off hot water at the heater really easy to do, or just go in get what you need to shower after a sufficient time has passed and it wouldn’t be considered rude to yourself to do it. I’m not sure about the doors in your home but I can open any locked door in mine with my fingernail but I haven’t had to deal with that in a long time since I moved away from home

I’m in a family of 5 so sharing one tank of water at night really became a problem. Previously there were 6 people living here and that is when we got the heater. Though she was taking very long showers then as well. My parents would make us wait for them to shower first and let us kids fight about who got in next. Though since then her showers just keep getting longer and longer. Might need to get her a humidifier for her room lol.

What is your water heating system and do you have access to it? The easiest way is to mess with it. Like, if you have your own boiler, turn the temperature to lukewarm, or make the flow as tiny as possible.

If you cannot mess with water, put hidden speakers in the bathroom. Give her 10 minutes in the shower, then play the music she hates, alarm sound, the evil laugh or Kenneth Copeland (or another batshit crazy dude) prayers.

Get a really stinky cat or ferret. Keep the litterbox or ferret cage in the bathroom. Bonus: your cat will be screaming bloody murder under the shower door, just because he can.

If you are brave at heart, get a can of Surströmming or a Durian fruit. Open the can in the bathroom, hide it in the corner. Take your shower in the gas mask from now on. Don't share the gasmask with your sister.

The trick isn't to make the shower colder, cause that's how a lot of people finish off showers. You gotta turn on the bathroom sink hot water until it's all toasty, then quickly switch the water to cold and flush the toilet. The shower then looses all the cold water that is keeping it warm and gets really hot all of a sudden. A shock or two like that will get her out. Worked with my roomates.
