What is your go to source for music?

My car has SiriusXM built in. I don’t think I could deal with terrestrial radio now.
But before that, I’d use either Spotify or Pandora, and sometimes Apple Music if I had a free trial.
My musical tastes are all over the place, so Sirius is especially nice for being able to surf music from the 1940’s to the 2010’s
How about you?
Dramatic_Side_856@reddit
I normally use YouTube. But I’m thinking of using Sirius XM with three months free if I get it at Target.
earlyboy@reddit
I use Apple Music for my streaming, but it’s not my favourite source of content. The algorithm doesn’t suggest anything that would make me feel uncomfortable. That’s why it’s important to keep using Allmusic and Pitchfork. My wife has fantastic taste in music as well. We watched Coachella over the past two weekends and we loved CMAT, Lil Sims and Geese.
MommaGuy@reddit
Spotify. My car has the app so I don’t even need to have my phone.

Apple Music or Spotify

I mostly listen to sports radio when I'm delivering pizzas. We have a kickass local station that chased ESPN radio out and gives a bunch of local flavor.
If I'm streaming music I use the free version of Live One (was called Slacker long ago when I got locked out of my Pandora and switched).
Or I will find a full album of whatever I'm feeling on YouTube and play it through my browser to eliminate the ads.
I also recently started using my Google play credits for audiobooks so I've got a few of those now too.

Spotify.

Apple Music or sometimes smooth soul, smooth 70s and xfm chill in the car.
CatapultingFeces@reddit
If I'm not at home, Spotify. At home it's physical media. I listen to entire albums so it still feels normal to pop in a CD or drop the needle on an LP.
No_Builder7010@reddit
Funny, we had XM for years and years, then switched to Pandora. Now that we don't have XM, I listen to a lot more terrestrial radio. We don't have a huge selection of stations, but I have realized that XM was so specific that I was rarely introduced to genres, artists, etc bcuz you have your favorites you keep returning to. While playlists are weirdly short here on earth, I do get to enjoy more new-to-me things. Ads mostly suck but some of them are very engaging. I find myself sort of rating them, like a movie critic.

SiriusXM as well, the subscription is free with my vehicle so I can also use the app on my phone while at work. It covers all my listening pleasures

Pandora via CarPlay in the car - or talk radio - and suffer through the commercials.
omfgwhatever@reddit
If I'm in town, the local radio station. I live in a small city, so it takes about 4 minutes to get anywhere, 6 if people use the damn roundabouts incorrectly. Otherwise, I have playlists on YouTube music for long car rides.
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
My tastes are also all over the place. I'm a Spotify user, at present, though I also have vinyl and lossless digital video collections that I enjoy.

I took advantage of a free trial and could not go back to ads. It sucks they raised the price another $2, but it's still a good deal IMO. YT music isnt exactly Spotify but still fairly close, and YouTube Premium is indeed what you said, a game changer.

Tidal for me, mostly. Also a few gig of rips from over the years. For the car I'll generally throw a few varied albums in .flac format on a mini flash drive and change a few out every now and again. kicker7744@reddit
Every time I pick up Sirius for a month or two I get sick of it by the end. Too many repeats and all the same water down stuff.
YouTube music is similar but at least I can skip easily enough. On occasion it finds old stuff I haven't heard in ages but that's happening less and less.
I started listening to a foreign artist and it's slowly picked up their catalog so that's good.
But again for the most part it's 90% the same stuff every day just in a different order.
So now it's not just music it's music plus the John Stewart podcast or some other political pod blog.
I also have a thumb drive with the entire Beatles catalog on it but amazingly enough all of that is getting old as well.
This is what happens when you spend over a decade on the road running from place to place.

9inez@reddit
My main source is my own library that dates back to teen years (70s-80s), to which I constantly add new material. It’s pretty easy to pick an artist and branch out and search for adjacent sounds which eventually morph into other genres.
If you want new or new to you, it just requires that you continue digging.
Finding new music is accomplished by: - reading about music - music reviews - digging into new music within genres I’m already interested in - looking at what artists I like are listening to - exploration of recommended playlists (I have an Apple Music sub) - people create style oriented playlists on YouTube such as “Khruangbin vibes” or “Two Hour is Trip Hop” or “Best Indie of 2025” or “Top 100 Classic Jazz” and so on - recs here are Reddit in general and genre specific subs - friends

They offer a life time subscription for $10 a month for the premium service. I used to do the whole cancel and wait for a good deal thing. But I have 3 vehicles and I was calling a lot. I then discovered and fell in love with the Zune software and my first smartphone was a Microsoft phone. But still used Apple too. I never bought music on Xbox music
Then I got an HTC One Beats and went full Google Music. And I stupidly didn’t convert all that music to Apple when they cancelled it.

I also have YouTube Music. I've been a streaming music fan since Rhapsody, and had many services... but not having ads in normal YT is a great benefit keeping me here.

My rather ridiculous personal collection. That I own. And can't be talked away from me legally. I know so, so many people who just pitched or sold their music media when digitally tracks came along. A few friends gave theirs to me. I didn't understand it then, I don't understand it now. The convenience gained is so minimal, especially compared to the cost. Just IMO, but I like owning media. And you can absolutely buy new music, still.
Mbwapuppy@reddit
What media do you own?
edorhas@reddit
Some vinyl where no other option is available or that has personal meaning. Hundreds of CDs, DVDs, a few Blu-ray, but there's ownership issues there (key revocation), thousands of single FLAC or, if not available, mp3 or ogg. Tons of cassettes that I'm in the process of eliminating (most were replaced with digital years ago)... I'm old, but this is Gen-X, so ... I've been collecting music (and to a lesser extent movies and series) for a long time.

I had Pandora, then moved to Spotify, then Tidal for years…it’s funny just got SiriusXM because it was a free trial with my new Bronco Sport purchase…not bad but had trouble sinking the car subscription with the app and plus their marketing is annoying calling early af on weekends so now I’m down to KCRW!

We had one that went out of business last year after limping along and ending and restarting a few times in recent years, but from around 1991 to 2015ish I was blessed with a great actually independent local alt station that put on so many concerts and festivals, did giveaways, and had a lot of jocks who are well known and friends to many of us locally. Mostly MP3's on my cell phone. One of my vehicles has some crap free streaming service (with commercials), but I rarely listen to that because it's evolved into an ad and at least one promo to subscribe to their service between every song.
I'm anti-subscriptions, and everything is fucking subscription based anymore. Like, you can't even just download a fucking single MP3 from Amazon anymore, they push you to sub to their shitty Amazon music service. I'm starting to get that itch to just pirate everything again. If anyone knows the best places to pirate music these days, let me know (if that's allowed).

Bandcamp. I always try to get a hard copy from the artist, though not all of them have that option. When I visit my dad in Wilmington, NC, I listen to 98.3 FM, but otherwise, I don't do radio.
Also, I don't listen to any streamers. They don't pay for shit. David Lowery of Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven has been talking about this for years. The game has always been rigged against the talent, but these days it seems so much worse thanks to the streamers.
If you want to support your favorite bands, buy something from them as directly as you can. T-shirt, record, tote bag, whatever. Even buying one digital song pays out more than 1,000 streams, depending on the service. And the likelihood of you doing 1,000 streams is low.

Live Phish, Nugs, Spotify, LiveVault, SiriusXM (lots of channels)

YouTube, it comes with premium and that's my main streaming platform
SunnyPsyOp23@reddit
Sometimes I'll comb through festival posters and give a quick listen to artists I've never heard.
Release Radar on Spotify has been very hard to give up. Bandcamp. Music label pages. YouTube.

The economy is bad so I canceled SiriusXM. Listen to the local classic rock station on the way to work.

We have an alt radio station I listen to. I always hated Pandora, if I liked a song, it would never play it or that band again, only 'similar' songs and bands.

Sirius XM - XMU- their weekly top 15 show is worth the subscription. Found about many emerging artists through them.

I miss satellite. But I couldn't justify its price plus Spotify premium. And I use Spotify premium in a lot more places - home work traveling. So I killed it. I do miss SIRIUSXMU.

Qobuz. I’ve also used Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music. Qobuz is much better by far, especially for sound quality, but also the user interface.
Real-Emu507@reddit
I've had the family Spotify plus thing for ages. And my Amazon comes with Amazon music. And omg. My YouTube premium comes with YouTube music. 🙈 I also have cds still

I put on I Heart Radio's channel of Casey Kasum's countdowns. Never disappoints

Yeah, my current car has Sirius and I sprung for the subscription 7 years ago. I thought it was crazy to pay for radio but now I can't imagine listening without it. There's really only one terrestrial station I listen to, but I have a few Sirius stations on regular rotation. My current favourite is BB King's Bluesville.

Let’s see if I can remember my presets
PopRocks Little Steven’s Underground Garage Classic Rewind New Wave Lithium Musicals A couple of news channels Old time radio Yacht rock occasionally, but it reminds me too much sometimes of what I didn’t like about 70’s music

Radio Unbound app is my go to. Good mix of old and new music.

College radio.

I have a short 15 minute commute to work. In the car I'll either listen to the local NPR affiliate news station or the local NPR affiliate classics station. While at work I'll either have podcasts streaming through my ear buds or my playlist through Apple music which is all over the place as far as genre's. My wife doesn't care for the Apple music interface so she uses YouTube Music now.
smithe68@reddit
Mostly paid Spotify but sometimes I sail the high seas.
Boo-Boo97@reddit
Much as I hate Bezos, I pay for Amazon music. I can create playlists, listen to public playlists, listen to podcasts. All without commercials. And can skip whatever I'm not in the mood for.
I've used Sirius in rental cars and I'm not a fan of talk radio and the music stations would play 1 or 2 good songs for every 10 songs I'd never heard before and didn't like.

Mostly SiriusXM. Lithium of course, XM 34, with a healthy dose of First Wave (XM 33) mixed in.
Evening-Crazy-3528@reddit
I’ve used SiriusXM since before Sirius and XM merged. When I’m not in my truck or my wife’s car, I’m streaming from their app.
My wife uses YouTube Music when she’s not in the car. We pay for YouTube Premium because we can’t stand ads.
I’ve used Pandora in the past.

SiriusXM Classic Rewind in the truck - but my own playlist of randomness via Amazon Music on devices or home.
