My new concert routine

I still love going to concerts, but my routine has definitely changed. I used to push my way all the way to the front …to feel the music as I stood right in front of the speakers … caught up in all the action.
Now I like sitting back in the back end of the room. Admiring from a distance. Which also allows me to inconspicuously, dig into my pocket and pull out my little baggy. The little baggie that makes a concert going experience well worth it. What’s in my little bag you ask?
IBUPROFEN… because I can’t stand for more than two hours without my lower back, screaming at me. I’m old
desquamation@reddit
I’m exclusively a seats guy now. Used to always be on the floor and/or in the pit. Started buying seats instead in my mid thirties and will never go back. Fuck that standing for hours wedged against random morons shit. That’s a young person’s game.
Zeke688@reddit
Yep, I too have Murtaugh-ed.
Melechesh@reddit
Danny Glover was 41 when Lethal Weapon came out.
drainbamage1011@reddit
Currently 41, currently too old for this shit.
Zeke688@reddit
I’m weeks from 45, so works out. I think I have arthritis. 😕
toomuchtv987@reddit
Seat WITH a back on it, please. No bleachers!
the_mighty_hetfield@reddit
As a male of average height, everyone filming on their phones has not helped the GA experience either. Now I gotta try and see over outstretched arms holding phones, or worst yet be forced to watch show on someone's phone as they film. Fuck that noise.
Critical-Snow-7000@reddit
Every time I’ve had seats I’ve had to stand because others in front start standing. Worst of both worlds.
FungiStudent@reddit
Im a lawnboy at heart.
sweetbeard@reddit
You guys aren’t doing your morning calisthenics and it shows.
Use it or lose it brosquitos!

I’m gonna call this latest bout of lower back pain. Shitty luck for me. Wife and I are at the gym 4 to 5 days a week. I do a couple of sprint triathlon a year. Hiking, backpacking all year in the mountains. I’m pretty damn active. And yet… shit still hurts sometimes.
sweetbeard@reddit
Hate to see it, sorry for your ill-gotten pains!
mix0logist@reddit
I still live for the throng of the crowd.
ShakeItUpNowSugaree@reddit
I've done a show each in the pit and the balcony this year. I definitely felt it the next day after the pit, but I'm still not completely ruling them out yet.
TootyMcFarts@reddit
My lower back was hurting from standing, met with a trainer who said work on the hamstrings, abs, and back since it’s a muscle strength mismatch pulling your body all weird.
I did exercises just for those and noticed a big improvement pretty quickly, as they were very weak. Now, back feels great.
Praying for your back!
Huck84@reddit
I saw Slomosa in Asheville a few weeks back. They rocked. I recommend Whores and Rickshaw Billy's Burger Patrol if you're a fan of Slomosa.
Epicardiectomist@reddit
yes, keep that fire alive.
Live music has been, and always will be, my catharsis. I don't go nearly as much as I used to, but I still venture out when I can. I've sworn off large venue shows until someone does something about the rampant corporate scalping. I'm not feeding that bullshit machine. I'd much rather pay $15 to see a small metal band that's doing 8 shows in New England.
I paid my dues. I have multiple scars from my time in the pit and front row. Now I stand in the back with my old friends where everyone is wearing comfortable shoes and glasses. Time to let the youth of today have their time. Though they're not nearly as drunk or violent about the whole process as we were.....
makisupa79@reddit
🤘 I'm seeing Slomosa for the first time in a couple of weeks. Can. Not. Wait.
I stay in the back at GA shows. I'm not dealing with drunk/high kids moshing.
napalmthechild@reddit
Standing by the sound engineers in the back gives you the best sound.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I'm so old now I skip the concerts entirely and just spend that money on vinyl.
C0BRA_V1P3R@reddit
Fuck yeah! Nick Cave, Dinosaur Jr., and Love & Rockets.
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
Good eye! Nick and J are pretty easy to identify from the photos… but L&R?!
C0BRA_V1P3R@reddit
The logo on Kevin’s drum kit plus David J. (who has a distinctive look) gave it away.
seamurbile@reddit
"Our little lives get complicated" gave it away for me. Very cool photos!
suddle@reddit
The bands I see in concert don’t have mosh pits (Pet Shop Boys, Kraftwerk, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Depeche Mode, New Order, and I’m excited for Caberet Voltaire in May!), but even though there are assigned seats, people usually stand for the entire show.
You cannot imagine my glee when, at my last Kraftwerk show, everyone remained seated. 10/10 💕💺💕
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
New Order are my all time favorites. Saw Bernie’s version last year, and I’m going to see hooky in September.
suddle@reddit
I went to the Unity tour in 2022, which was Paul Oakenfold + PSB + New Order. Amazing show! The addition of a super talented DJ (who knew his audience, lol) made the show absolute magic.
I’m way more of a PSB fan than I am of New Order, but who doesn’t love some New Order?
I also saw New Order perform “Crystal” for the first time in North America, at the Area:One festival (Bernard announced it as such). I just realized I also saw The Orb at that festival! JFC. I am blessed!
MitchellSFold@reddit
I also very much need to clock where the toilets are before I can get comfortable anywhere.
Grunge_taz81@reddit
Slomosa, nice
Crabcakefrosti@reddit
I came here to say that! I heard about them from the Helmet tour last year.
MedicineMan81@reddit
Watching Marie Moe headbang brings me great joy. Awesome band!
blessitspointedlil@reddit
Wow, my 80 y o relative doesn’t need ibuprofen to stand for 2 hours - he’s old. I thought you were going to say “earplugs”.
I hope your body is ok enough that gentle exercises or seeing a physical therapist can reduce your back pain. If you have a herniated disc or something permanent like that - I am sorry & complaint totally valid.
TheFuckingHippoGuy@reddit
Acid to Antacid
B_B_Rodriguez2716057@reddit
We’ve got an outdoor venue I go to concerts at. I get there at gates open and get a spot first row on the lawn behind all the expensive covered seats. They rent lawn chairs there. That’s my perfect concert routine. I ain’t standing anymore lmao.
Don’t forget hearing protection. I love my Loops.
Pitiful_Ad2397@reddit
Loops are the only earplugs I have liked. I were them to every show, and keep them on my keychain in case I wander into a show at a bar somewhere
Pitiful_Ad2397@reddit
I get to shows early to get to the front. The front of the balcony so I can sit my ass down.
DethByCow@reddit
I went to a Hatebreed concert last year and bought a ticket at the seated tables. I wore my AirPods (surprising work well for concerts) and didnt even think about going into the pit even though they said all us retired pit people needed too. The concert was on a Tuesday so there’s that!
Hammerhandle@reddit
I stayed in the seats for Hatebreed at Pop's and kind of regretted it. So when Cannibal Corpse and Meshuggah rolled through, I was in and around the pit the whole time. I still got it!
gizmoch33ze@reddit
I was up in the seats at that Meshuggah show at the pageant and it was such a great experience in its own way when compared to seeing them when I was younger. I just kept thinking that this might be the last time they play here and that made me feel old more than not being in the pit.
Hammerhandle@reddit
For sure. I'm at the point where I'm catching them every time they come stateside no matter how far I have to travel. Thankfully it has just been Madison, WI and St Louis the past two times. We had great balcony spots for the Madison show, so I can definitely appreciate that.
DethByCow@reddit
Man, I’d love to but I can’t. I can only do low impact shit these days. To many I can eat nails days in the military. My body is like fuck you dude.
tehbighead@reddit
Hey! I've seen both Dinosaur Jr. and Nick Cave the past few years, too! Also, same about positioning and largely venue specific (near the sound booth at a few larger venues and mid-crowd left at my favorite independent joint).
I also tend to take the following day off if it's a workday since I tend to have a few beers with concert pals after shows. Insanely easy to get hungover at our age and I do *not* bounce back like I used to.
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
Folks our age don’t bounce back… we splat and puddle
goathook@reddit
I see Kilby Ct
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
Yup! Great show last night

PrestigiousMaize2368@reddit
I took my 10 year old to see NIN this year. It was his first concert so I wanted to make it memorable. I dusted off my old doc martins (from high school) and we got all the way up to the front. Long story short, I ended up with shin splints and plantar fasciitis from my old ass shoes.
MungoJennie@reddit
I’m so sorry for your injuries, but that’s so awesome that you went all the way to give your son the full experience!
PrestigiousMaize2368@reddit
It was pretty amazing. Security let him go to the side stage for Head Like a Hole. And he got signed drum sticks from Josh Freese.
MungoJennie@reddit
Oh, wow. That’s so awesome!
daylight1943@reddit
my concert regimen is exactly the same as its always been - find seat, do acid, smoke weed
FungiStudent@reddit
Yeah. Except its MDMA and Ketamine for me these days. And weed. Sometimes mushrooms. I haven't sont any acid in a long time. Phish this year is gonna ba amazing.
-EvilLittleGoat-@reddit
You’re doing better than I am! I graduated to the ADA sections.
MungoJennie@reddit
Same, and generally the seats aren’t exactly premium.
RoyDonkeyKong@reddit
don’t forget the ear plugs!
FungiStudent@reddit
You arent kidding. I was at a Dub Step show recently and I would have permanent hearing damage had I not worn earplugs. I bought those ones that have a small hole in them so you can hear people talk, but its keeps you safe. Highly recommended!
sixmilesoldier@reddit
Heart says pit, knees say sit.
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
This might be the official Xennial slogan
PickleFlavordPopcorn@reddit
I am going to embroider this on a jacket and wear it to a concert
Crossing_Phases@reddit
I will be 80 years old in the damn pit. Watching from hundreds of feet away is not appealing. If I die in the pit then then pit has my soul. Just as god intended.
pixeequeen84@reddit
I might embroider this on a denim jacket to wear to concerts. Or maybe a hoodie...
BigPoppaStrahd@reddit
I want that on a t-shirt to wear to concerts
ViciousSnatch@reddit
We need that saying on all the things.
MungoJennie@reddit
I’ve always hated floor. I’m short, and inevitably I end up with six six-footers standing in front of me, and I can’t see the stage anyway.
The one exception was a Radiohead concert where my uni roommate (who was taller than me, but not physically imposing) and I got floor tickets and early admission. We were right up against the metal barrier. It was great until the crowd surged and we started getting crushed. Thank God security saw us and got us out of there.
epidemicsaints@reddit
J Mascis!! Was that a Dino show?
My bff saw Folk Implosion in a teeny tiny room with maybe 40 people last year.
Therealfern1@reddit (OP)
Yup, saw dino last fall. 50 or six times seeing them. They never disappoint.
Adventurous_Pin_344@reddit
No they don't. J shreds!!
ranaldo20@reddit
I hope you wore ear protection at those shows, lol. Loudest show I've ever seen, except for maybe Mogwai and the Melvins.
ChutneyRiggins@reddit
I was dizzy for a solid 24 hours after seeing Dinosaur Jr years ago. My god it was loud.
sljxuoxada@reddit
I met him in an elevator once. Really nice guy.
Right_Hour@reddit
Nah, I still get general floor admission tickets to bands that throw a good show. Like Maneskin even. I got access to prescription strength pain-killers, but I won’t even need them because dancing counts as core aerobic exercise, LOL!
imlegear@reddit
More room to dance (lightly) in the back
Same-Manufacturer773@reddit
Reading all this as my knees and back are on fire from going to a local show last night at a brewery. I’ll never stop going to shows! It was just what my husband and I needed. HC is good for the soul.
FinallyKat@reddit
Mone also contains earplugs now... sigh
WhatTheCluck802@reddit
I threw out my back folding towels this afternoon.
Exhibit A of why I can no longer rock and roll all night and party every day.
This old ass needs a SEAT at shows, man.
BillyDMountain@reddit
Yeah, I like being comfortably seated in an indoor venue or watching someone's hi def video from home on the big screen.
lastminutealways@reddit
Depends on the show. If it’s one of my few favorite smaller bands in a smaller venue, I usually try to be in the very front, especially if there’s an actual barricade for me to lean on. But if my band is the opener or I don’t know the bands as well, I’ll stand off to the side or toward the back. Always with earplugs.
TheDaymanALSOCameth@reddit
Whole bunch of white hairs in front of you showing you up 😆
UnderH20giraffe@reddit
So, they let you know when it’s time to come and then you do it on command or do you need a fluffer?
DraculasDog@reddit
sweetbirthdaybaby333@reddit
Earplugs and a Covid mask. No booze. Maybe a little water if it's really dry, but otherwise I am not breathing in the air of an indoor show.
I can still really get into the show, but I need a LOT of decompression time after I get home. Like I'll go into the guest room to have complete silence for a while.
DraculasDog@reddit
minimonimuse@reddit
Lower seated stands for the win! And definitely earplugs. And comfy shoes.
dinosandbees@reddit
I will sit for a good part of the show, even when the people in front of me are standing. And if you rent seat cushions, I'm gonna rent that seat cushion!
Impossible_Bit7169@reddit
Dude I’m 45 and my legs and feet kill me when I’m standing in the same spot for three hours at a time
DetCityDaveST@reddit
I’m not quite as old as most here but my wife and I go to like 6 shows a year. We saw The Menzingers last weekend.
Deep-Ad4351@reddit
Nick Cave and ibuprofen por vida ❤️❤️❤️
