I was referred to this mechanic by a family friend. Quoted 4k to replace the engine.
I still owe 7k on this 2105 Corolla LE. It’s got 180,000miles

That's a suspicious sounding diagnosis.

call the local wrecker and ask what’s the price for a motor your car. Think 4k is a little bit too high.
Simple-Department-28@reddit
Unless that price is all in, then $4K is reasonable imho.
poutine-eh@reddit
perhaps….. what’s a fair price for 2011 Ranger 4.0 re and re using an engine from the wrecker?? Let’s see what i paid is what you’d pay
Simple-Department-28@reddit
Not a clue. I have no way of doing anything like an engine swap myself, so if I was able to get the engine in my car replaced with a warranty for $4K? I’d pay it.
poutine-eh@reddit
even if I was able to get it done for $1750 CAD with a warranty??
Simple-Department-28@reddit
I’d say congratulations, that’s a smoking deal. Not everyone has the right connections to get the same sort of deal, I certainly don’t.

the engine was easy. much like the corolla the ranger engine was a dime a dozen. After that find an old guy who knows how to actually re and re an engine. even AI (which i hate) agrees…. in CAD it said i’d expect to pay $2500 cad which is about 2k USD….

To me that’s the catch, where would one find someone to do the work for that price? There isn’t anyone in the group of people I know that can do that kind of work. The price you paid, is that the price someone just walking in off the street would pay?
poutine-eh@reddit
yes and no. Yes the labour was probably a little cheaper because the guy who did the work was a friend but I didn’t ask for a deal and kid what he felt was fair the cost of the engine was the as I was the one who sourced it. Obviously it’s better when you are friends with the mechanic and makes it easier to be confident. My suggestion is find on old guy at least 50 years old in a mom and pop shop and pay cash. will cost 1/2 the price

I’ve heard quotes like 7K-8k for major anyone work. 4 is cheap. Is it new or secondhand ?
Usacapitol33@reddit (OP)
I bought it at 83,000 miles
Current_Homework_143@reddit
They mean the engine your mechanic is putting in.
Minimum-Reward3264@reddit
Yes, the engine.
Usacapitol33@reddit (OP)
Second hand
Realistic-March-5679@reddit
Yes but how many miles does the secondhand engine have? Is it more than your car? That is also important for pricing reasons.
ChrisGear101@reddit
For a 2105 model, I'd pay for it.
But $4k is very reasonable IMHO. Parts alone are expensive and it is a good bit of labor as well.
