So sick and tired of being confused. Needing advice

I am a student pilot that is currently enrolled in an online course with over 700 videos with an end goal to pass my PPL test. I am 43% finished, and I need to be done by June. This is already a huge stressor to me because I am greatly struggling to juggle the videos/tests, my job, and school,
I do not understand 90% of these concepts, and the course does not allow resources for those who are confused. It seems like it just expects you to understand, and if you don’t, you’re shit out of luck.
I understand nothing about Performance and Limitations, and I understand nothing about Weight and Balance. I am so incredibly stressed out, because I need to get this stuff done, but I am completely unable to pass these tests despite the 282 videos explaining the concepts.
I need serious help. Where do I go if I don’t understand? It’s not a matter of having questions, it’s a matter of me just completely not understanding any bit of this.
I am losing hope and motivation, and i’m honestly debating on if this career is meant for me.
RealP4@reddit
700 videos? That’s wild.
Guysmiley777@reddit
This entire thread is a blaze of hormone fueled teenage angst.
flyghu@reddit
It's 538 videos and about 20 hours of content. You'll need 80+ hours to go through it because many concepts will take additional reading and work to understand and master.
If it was just watching videos then everyone would be a pilot.
CluelessPilot1971@reddit
Meaning each video is just over two minutes in length (on average)?
EliteEthos@reddit
Why don’t you bring these topics to your CFI for help?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
I would like to. Maybe i’ll get his number
EliteEthos@reddit
You don’t know your CFIs phone number?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
No. I’m 17. my mom is the one who contacts him. hes also my brand new instructor so I just haven’t gotten the time to get it
CluelessPilot1971@reddit
My first primary student just turned 16 when we started working together. My student's parents were on every text I sent him, but if I couldn't communicate directly with my student, no way I would have agreed to take that project. This is *your* training, seems like both your instructor and your mom are not giving you much responsibility or trust.
SP_Aman@reddit
Lol this is a wild thread.
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
how is me not having my brand new instructors number wild
SP_Aman@reddit
It's really out of the ordinary. Your flight instructor and you need to have a good relationship to make flight training smoother and more efficient... because end of the day it's going to be hard. So not having his number is just strange and makes things needlessly complicated with your mom being a middle man.
Is your mother a flight instructor? If not, why is she involved with the process so much? I got my private when I was your age and my parents were not telling me what to do.
Icy-Bar-9712@reddit
This is just not the way we do flight instruction. Like any part of any of the things you've posted.
M2K-throwaway@reddit
Every new detail just makes it more bizarre lmao
Comprehensive-Try430@reddit
Yeah in no way shape or form does anyone need 700 videos
EliteEthos@reddit
699 videos should suffice just fine.
Comprehensive-Try430@reddit
698* one with non copyright intro music and another to end the series with non copyright outro music
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
i’m so glad you guys are all saying this, cuz i’ve been under the impression that anybody could handle this and there’s just something wrong with me
Comprehensive-Try430@reddit
Yeah man that’s excessive. I know everyone learns different, but for private I remember just using kings and youtube for mock orals/maneuvers. Highly recommend that
SP_Aman@reddit
I am 43% finished, and I need to be done by June.
PPL test with only online ground? Need to be done by June? Are you in a program?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
I have my student pilots license already, and I have around 14 hours of flight. Im taking an online ground school course, and when it’s finished (by June), I am going to continue to fly in order to finish the rest of my prep to take the test.
M2K-throwaway@reddit
This still makes no sense. Did your instructor stipulate you must pass the written test before you can fly?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
yes.
M2K-throwaway@reddit
You should probably get a new instructor and a different course because everything about this is ridiculous
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
my mom is pissed that im only 282 videos in. she bought the course. I am scared to tell her it’s not working because she believes that I have no drive. but in reality, this course is making me dread getting my education.
Delicious-Advantage6@reddit
Brother, go on YouTube and go to free pilot training , he will explain things to you in 70 videos what 700 do from pilot institute. When I listen to pilot institutes content it’s always so detailed to where it’s something I’d watch before a checkride after I know the material rather than learning it for the first time.
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
Maybe I will rewatch important videos of this course before my checkride. Thank you for the advice!
SP_Aman@reddit
My instructor did the same, I recommend you to just use dauntless test prep, I finished the written within a month that way.
SP_Aman@reddit
You're at 14 hours, you're not going to understand some of the concepts in the videos, and as the other commentator said - 700 videos is extreme.
Have you taken the written? And are you at a part 61 or 141?
CluelessPilot1971@reddit
I've seen like a million and a half ads for the Pilot Institute, but I have not watched any of their videos.
Understanding the material is an absolute requirement for your private pilot ground school (or any other ground school). If there's something you learned, it's that the Pilot Institute is not a good match for you. Different people come with their own background and different learning style. It is crucial that the material is taught in the way you learn.
Three potential suggestions:
Suggestion #1: Find a flight instructor or a ground instructor who will teach you one-on-one. You can find us quite literally everywhere.
Suggestion #2: Try a different source, luckily there's a free source that contains pretty much everything you need. Read through the Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge ("PHAK"), you can find it on the FAA's website. It contains most of what you need, with a few extras that are in the Airplane Flying Handbook and the Aviation Weather Handbook.
Suggestion #3: Try a different paid source, one option is the Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual. Pretty thick book that breaks down everything quite simply and easy to digest.
homeinthesky@reddit
OP, look no further than this. #1 is best option, even better when paired with #2. Read the PHAK, and talk about it with an instructor. As you go forward in learning, most of the concepts you’ll learn about from an instructor are going to be word for word from the PHAK.
Late-Accident-2399@reddit
Bro...this has got to be trolling..
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
it’s not
AIMIF@reddit
Why is June a deadline for you?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
I don’t know. my mom and instructor told me that’s my deadline because they want me flying this summer
AIMIF@reddit
Ok so they made up an arbitrary deadline for you with no actual financial or educational consequences?
Seems like there’s pressure that doesn’t NEED to be there
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
I completely agree, but I just didn’t wanna protest. my mom has spent so much money and time on my flights, I just wanted to take her word for it. I feel bad objecting but i’m getting so burnt out
Icy-Bar-9712@reddit
No, she hasn't. You have 14 of the (at least) 250 hours you are going to need to pay for before there is any chance of the revenue reversing direction.
Setting arbitrary deadlines is the worst possible thing you can do to a student.
AIMIF@reddit
You need to say something to her.
Sure it’s not a comfortable conversation, but if you don’t do it now, what happens later if you feel even more burnt out and your mom has spent even more money? But you have to be able to tell the truth even when it disappoints people or is uncomfortable
Rush_1_1@reddit
I'm not sure I understand the timing of your flight training.. you're already working and in school and you have a deadline to finish?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
i’m in high school. i’m saying it’s hard to juggle high school work and 700 pilot training videos
Rush_1_1@reddit
Are you sure you have that deadline? I know the course I did you can just renew if the time runs out.
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
The deadline isn’t related to the course itself, my mom and instructor just said I have to have it done by then
Rush_1_1@reddit
Tell your mom it's objectively unsafe to rush stuff in aviation especially considering you're struggling so bad.
If she cancels your training cause of that, idk man maybe it's for the best. Id rather you stay again after graduating than ruin multiple dimensions of your life, or worse, for expediency.
Positive-Hat2127@reddit
Why such a strict deadline when you're only studying part time? I did my PPL theory over a little more than a year on the side of my work.
mountainbrew46@reddit
I’m not gonna tell you what relationship you have with your mom, but this isn’t exactly up to you instructor. You’re the customer. If they want to drop you as a student because you didn’t have the written done by some arbitrary deadline then so be it… if you ask me you’re better off with another CFI anyway
Icy-Bar-9712@reddit
He's in high school and probably want the summer to fly before fall school starts.
Everything about this is doing them dirty.
Smiggles0618@reddit
You're burning yourself out. Is there a reason you can't focus on high school and work on the PPL after?
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
It’s just a lot. I can, and i’ve been trying my best. but there’s only so much I can do. I’m dreading this all, and i’ve wanted to be a pilot since I was 4 years old
Smiggles0618@reddit
That's the problem. You have plenty of time to get there and if you keep running yourself into the ground with the schedule you're trying to keep then it's very likely you'll lose the passion for it.
Sometimes it's good to take a step back 🙂
-Cheebus-@reddit
Do MZeroA, it’s $100 but I got a 96 on my test and only studied for maybe a week
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
I already spent $300 on this course. I can’t switch
EliteEthos@reddit
Yes. You can.
What good is that $300 if you aren’t learning anything?
Aviation is expensive. If you’re flinching over $100, that’ll likely be an issue moving forward.
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
i’m only in high school. I can’t afford these things. my mom said that if I didn’t finish the course, I’d be paying her for it
EliteEthos@reddit
Who is paying for your flying? You have 14 hours.
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
my mom
EliteEthos@reddit
So, she will pay 10a of thousands for your PPL and not an extra $100 for different training material?
Why not tell her you need her to reach out to your CFI and schedule ground lessons with the material you have?
Positive-Hat2127@reddit
What do you mean you understand nothing about performance and w&b? I think you firstly need to narrow down exactly what it is you don't understand. Do you only have access to videos? Nothing in text? I find that reading combined with visual is what works best for me when I need to understand something.
Disastrous-Trash1025@reddit
Disclaimer:
I haven’t yet done the PPL exams.
My experience with exams is to start with the question bank. The videos are usually information overload which most ppl’s brains can’t keep up with.
Starting with the QB helps you see and separate between what is common sense, and what is required knowledge. Find a concept you or words you don’t understand, google it, or ask AI to explain to explain it to you.
See how that works for you
Ok-End-3213@reddit
Use other resources to study. Plenty of material on youtube, phak, go over the acs. Should be able to find stuff online
vivalicious16@reddit
What is the name of the course? 700 videos seems extreme. Just go with Sporty’s
throw-away8288@reddit (OP)
Pilot Institute. Thats the only name I know, I apologize
