How fast do you drive normally?

I notice that a vast majority of drivers all over the country especially in New England drive well over 10 more than the speed limit especially on highways. How fast do y’all drive? Do you drive the speed limit, go up to 10 over or more than 10 over? And why is speed limit just a guidance most of us rather than a hard limit unlike other countries especially in Australia and some Asian countries? Why are we on average more rash and hotheaded as drivers compared to the rest of the world? I will admit I am guilty of being rash and hotheaded sometimes as an American

I drive the speed limit generally. It may be a function of being old.
Craftycat99@reddit
Or just actually caring about other people's safety
Saying this as a young person who also goes the speed limit

Strong Towns has gone over some of these reasons before, but American roads since the 1950s have been built to prioritize speed and volume over safety. The natural instinct of drivers is to drive as quickly as they can, roads must be designed to discourage that by making them feel either impossible or unsafe to speed on, unless it's a highway. The US hasn't used speed cameras on highways very often, and so enforcement has largely been reliant on physically stationing cops in specific areas. Given how spread out and car dependent much of the US is and has been for 70-ish years, and the fact that police don't have the resources to watch every car everywhere, combined with the aforementioned road designs, the environment is such that speed is encouraged by the built environment and discouraged from being enforced by lack of resources, resistance to surveillance, and possibly every cop knowing that anyone they ticket for speeding could potentially be cut off from earning a living if they have other violations.

But why is the speed limit only 65 on highways. It should be 80 at the very least
mattyofurniture@reddit
Match traffic. Otherwise, 10% over.
Craftycat99@reddit
I go right at or a bit below speed limit at day and slower at night to avoid hitting animals
Franklinricard@reddit
In town no more than 5 mph. Highway 10-15 depending on flow and traffic. I5 to Los Angeles… 90 to keep up.
bloodectomy@reddit
5-20 over posted limit, depending on traffic and road type
SapienWoman_@reddit
10% or 10mph over unless I’m in an active school zone.
r2k398@reddit
The speed limit. I can think of a lot better things to spend my money on than a ticket, defensive driving courses, and court costs.
the_owl_syndicate@reddit
I drive the speed limit. There are too many speed traps to keep track of and the highway patrol doesnt look kindly on "but it was only 5 over".
Prof01Santa@reddit
We all drive exactly at the speed limit or below. To do otherwise would be wrong.
ClickClick_Boom@reddit
Not sure about "some Asian countries" but in Australia the punishment for speeding is more much more expensive, and that's probably why fewer risk it.
MsPandaLady@reddit
I can't speak to other countries or anyone but I just go with the flow of traffic. So if flow is going speed limit then so do I. If there is no one else on road and its highway then I might go 20 or 30 over
shelwood46@reddit
Back when I got my license, the New Jersey drivers' manual explicitly said to go with the flow of traffic when on highways. I try to stay within the speed limit on local roads, and at or below it in school zones when marked, but on a highway/turnpike? Forget it, I hit the middle lane and stay with the traffic, even if it is going well above the posted speed limit.
Ordinary_Map_5000@reddit
NJ: where our collective attitude on highways is that they can’t ticket us all lol
arcadiangenesis@reddit
I just drive as fast as feels comfortable. Usually it's 10 over (in light traffic).
im_in_hiding@reddit
Regularly about 10 over
letsNOTgetcrazy@reddit
Speed limit of course;)
moodeng2u@reddit
Up to ten over or 10 percent over the speed limit...and the cops will never bother you. (Excluding other obvious stuff...seat belt...lights....expired tag) You also find a niche in the flow of traffic that is a little more comfortable.
I have 4 million miles in big trucks in America. No speeding tickets in a truck in the last 3.5 million.

I'm not answering this...
Fragrant-Inside221@reddit
Less fast the older I get.
Adjective-Noun123456@reddit
Flow of traffic, so in a 45 that means anywhere between 45 and 60 depending on the road.
The police in my neck of the woods are pretty chill as well. So if it's an open road and you're not driving like an idiot you can get away with some pretty hilarious speeds as long as you're not in a neighborhood.
Maximum_Dweeb4473@reddit
10-20 over.
8-9 over when there’s cops/lots of pedestrians.
No rage here, but very liberal horn use if you don’t move your ass when the light is green, or if you’re pussyfooting when you should be turning right on red or if you’re going under the speed limit.
Illinois/Chicago area here, so before you call me a reckless asshole, do understand this is the norm here.
cntodd@reddit
The flow of the traffic.
hollowbolding@reddit
i match the speed of the traffic around me, officer
danhm@reddit
The thinking here is people are going to speed anyway so keep the limit to something where 10-20 mph would still be okay.
madogvelkor@reddit
Usually 5-10 over. The Merritt Parkway in CT has a limit of 55 but everyone does at least 65. On the interstates 70-80 is normal, though I usually do about 70.
Rattlingplates@reddit
All depends on location, traffic and weather/road conditions.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
The speed limit around where I live tops out at 75 and that's plenty fast enough for me.
__Quercus__@reddit
Flow of traffic, which here in California is 10-15 over...when traffic actually flows.
GOTaSMALL1@reddit
IMO… it’s a leftover from when the max speed limit was a ridiculously low 55mph.
“Keep it reasonable but g’ahead and do 10 over” stuck when the limits went from 55 to 65-85.
5oco@reddit
SassyMoron@reddit
I live in NJ so 82-84 on the 65mph roads and I ain't passing people at that speed. Other roads, 7 over.
Thelonius16@reddit
12-15 over mostly.
I don’t agree with this “rest of the world” bullshit.
Libertas_@reddit
The pace of traffic, so about 70-80.
HawaiianShirtMan@reddit
9 your fine, 10 your mine
Far-Increase8154@reddit
10 over or 5 over
IlexAquifolia@reddit
Used to be 5-10 over, after having a kid it’s 0-5 over and I get mad at people who speed.
Wondercabage@reddit
I go 5 over. Thats about the limit you can get away with where im at.
gonzagylot00@reddit
About 5 over, which in NC makes me the slowpoke.
Low-Restaurant8484@reddit
Generally just 5 over myself, but most people do more for sure
Capable-Instance-672@reddit
I drive around 9 over on the highway/interstate and 5 over in town. It's usually what you can get away with, without getting pulled over.
duabrs@reddit
7 over
