Great movie that seems to be left out of most conversations about comedy-horror

I had this on VHS and watched it dozens of times
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
comedy?
ChicagoRex@reddit (OP)
I mean, the tone is light. There are jokes and irony throughout the movie, even in the climactic fight. "Not the Chateau."
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
maybe I haven't actually seen it since it came out theatrically
i just vaguely recall creepy spiders and freaky creepy stuff and not the comedy side of it. i guess i'll see when i rewatch

It’s funny, similar to ghostbusters in humor

I saw this with a group of friends in the theater. We all hated it. It was too tame to be a decent horror movie, and too unfunny to be a comedy.
The marketing blitz really pushed Goodman as a huge part of this film, and besides his one liners shown in the trailers, man he is forgettable in this. The story goes he shot all of his scenes during a one week break from Roseanne, and the lack of polish shows. His role in this is about as unfunny as his lead role in King Ralph.

It was funny when John Goodman’s character sprayed the spider with pesticide and it refused to die, so he had to walk over and stomp it.

I've always felt a little bad for that spider, even though I'm sure they were just spraying it with water. Poor lil spider didn't ask for that.

I watched 10 minutes of Arachnophobia when it came out on video. It has left me with a much more crippling fear of spiders than I had prior to seeing it. 😳🕷️😫
psilosophist@reddit
Such a fun movie. Spiders don't really bother me though, I usually rescue ones I find around the apartment and put them in my girlfriend's plants.
EvenLettuce6638@reddit
I read the novelization before I saw the movie. The original ending, where they stayed in the town, was better.
Forsaken_Marzipan536@reddit
Anyone else think about spiders coming out of the tap every time you turn it on to wash your hands?
One-Earth9294@reddit
Well... I love spiders so it's not terribly scary to me lol.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
Yeah true. It was so huge when it came out. But then for some reason seems to have become forgotten about.
BlueSnaggleTooth359@reddit
maybe because spiders = too scarring
MeatPopsicle10@reddit
Saw this at a sleepover around ‘92!
TwistingEcho@reddit
Now the body all webbed was terrifying, but the spiders themselves just never made my adrenaline spike. Not sure why thb.

This movie was a fairly big deal when it came out. I watched it in the theatre twice, and must have watched it on cable a bunch too cause I still remember many of the scenes. I wonder how it holds up today.
Tallowpot@reddit
John Goodman is a treasure! Gotta watch this again
Sparked_Zwei@reddit
I still check my shoes...
alvinofdiaspar@reddit
Saw it, loved it - and it only reinforced my dislike of spiders.

username__0000@reddit
It’s actually hard to find. I think I check every few years. lol
I have multiple streaming services (Canada though so different smaller lists) and it’s never on any.
Mabvll@reddit
Nope, nope, nope, never again. Nothing "comedic" about this movie. It scared the unholy shit out of me as a kid, and im certain that it is the root cause of my crippling fear of spiders.

dirtjiggler@reddit
Because fuck that movie. Heeeellll nah.

Braindead
TheOsirisOfThisShit_@reddit
It's reality horror. John Goodman is funny, but that's not the focus of the movie.
ChicagoRex@reddit (OP)
Other characters have laugh lines too, and there are moments of irony. I guess I'd call it 75% horror, 25% comedy. The tone stays fairly light throughout.
DarthWeber@reddit
It's been over a decade since I've seen this movie. All I remember is John Goodman. Didn't terrify me as a kid surprisingly. Love my spiderbros.
analogthought@reddit
Yeahhhh, was deathly afraid of spiders until about 10 years ago because of this movie.
dakkamatic@reddit
I sell the dead was amazing and doesn’t get enough love I feel
midnight-dour@reddit
I remember a computer game was made at the time and the back had a shot of the game over screen…which absolutely terrified young me.
Smokeythemagickamodo@reddit
Lol I was scareed. Definitely need to go back and watch it
erraticcompendium@reddit
Scarred my sister for life.
Cutthechitchata-hole@reddit
Right. Your sister.
Shackonthehill403@reddit
Perfect film!
Zezu@reddit
Everyone is too afraid to talk about it because that will make it a real movie that’s not just a thing we didn’t really see, doesn’t exist, and spiders don’t exist… did you know that? Spiders aren’t real and this movie isn’t real. Bye!
ButterscotchAware402@reddit
I enjoyed this one but was obsessed with 1977's Kingdom of the Spiders starring Bill Shatner.
Mudcreek47@reddit
This was on TBS for literal years in the 90s
Pale_Leek2994@reddit
I think this might have been one of the first movies I saw in theatres. John Goodman is the best.

Can’t watch it again. It made me itchy for a week the first time.
PatchworkGirl82@reddit
I remember being scared by the trailer for it

TinyRedGuy@reddit
This movie fucked me up. Is it supposed to be funny? I was very much not amused
Bindlestiff34@reddit
Cause it’s scary as hell. Or at least it is in my head cause I won’t watch it
caramelcoldbrew@reddit
Yes! I forgot all about this movie. Maybe I’ll show my kids the movie, they’re both afraid of spiders.
