My Stealth Ebike Build!
Posted by SherbertNational@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 32 comments
Just finished building my stealth ebike project! Super happy with the results and just wanted to share incase anyone else wants to do something similar!
Wanted to build something you’d have to really look at to see was an ebike, and was built around a road frame instead of the typical mtb. The controller sits inside a water bottle, with most of the connections being routed within the frame. Had to do some fiddly soldering to really hide the wires but I think it was worth it in the end!
Specs:
500w bafang rear hub
48v 7ah bottle battery
Bolany SLR frame
Ltwoo R9 Groupset
If anyone has any questions feel free to reach out!

Really nicely done. That's why I bought a black e-bike without fat tires so it didn't stand out. Most people by me associate e-bikes as having fat tires. And I ride a lot in the dark, which helps. Keep up the great work!

Cost? Really love this. I love traditional mountain bikes and really want a build like this

Haven’t really been keeping track, but here’s roughly the cost. Ill split into things I HAD to buy, and things you could definitely go cheaper on:
Must haves: Frameset £170 Battery £131 Hub/controller/display/pas £220
Accessories: Carbon Seat Post £16 Carbon Seat £30 Ltwoo Groupset £100.40 Ltwoo crankset £38 Casette £20.67 Brake rotors £7.33 Chain £11.79 Inner tubes £11.49 Conti Grand Sport race £32.46 Stem £11.49
All the other bits I wouldn’t really add to the cost, as you could definitely go cheaper.

how far is your range with 7ah?
smoothloam@reddit
Why do you want to hide that it’s a e-bike?
SherbertNational@reddit (OP)
A few factors really! Living in london, E-bikes are becoming increasingly illegal but police don’t care if you don’t give them a reason to look. Also I prefer the cleaner look
5ma5her7@reddit
Just for asking, are the police over there mostly just looking for those fat tyre bikes ridden by teenagers, or even harassing commuters on their Riese Mullers?
SherbertNational@reddit (OP)
Tbh I don’t think they’re really prosecuting/fining anyone, but I’ve not got any hard facts, just going off the fact I’ve never seen any checkpoints, anyone ever pulled over, or anything of the sort. The issues that are spoken about in London are either Surrons & those 2000/3000W bikes as these are both what people use to steal phones. Food delivery drivers here all use some form of illegal ebike and there’s millions of them, so wierdly enough I think they let it go under the radar as it probably brings in quite a bit of money

Thanks, makes sense.

Reminds me of mine, except mine os more of a commuter, is 36v, and the controller and battery are inside the frame.

Flops speed 500 for the curious.
Fire_Power@reddit
How big is ur batt and whats the range?
iSellNuds4RedditGold@reddit
250w and I can get anything ranging from 50 to 110km out of it. (30 to 65mph for the burgers)
Fire_Power@reddit
What's the speed like?
iSellNuds4RedditGold@reddit
EU compliant, max assisted is 25 km/h (15.5 mph) but on flat when rested I cruise at about 27-30

You nailed the stealth look so hard-you'd never guess this is an ebike just by looking at it. I'm obsessed with how natural this looks.
Feisty-Delivery2047@reddit
Can I ask where people buy motors and batteries? Whenever I look them up, all the websites look dubious (possibly bad search results/ads, or maybe my not being familiar with this) or things are out of stock. And I don't like looking on Amazon because I don't know what to trust there either, and because Amazon
SherbertNational@reddit (OP)
Bought both of these from Aliexpress. Stick to verified sellers with lots of reviews and you’ll be fine
Fire_Power@reddit
I personally buy it off taobao. Just search for trustworthy brands like ZL Motor.
Fire_Power@reddit
Is it pedal assist or throttle? And whats the range like?
SherbertNational@reddit (OP)
Only pedal assist for now, could add a throttle with some more wiring but i think it would take away some of the stealth
Hardware2445@reddit
What kind of pedal assist range are you getting on that? It looks excellent.
SherbertNational@reddit (OP)
Yet to properly test the thing, but will let you know!
Unable_Sherbet_7362@reddit
What the torque in terms of Nm? (Very Stealthy indeed)
stupornatural@reddit
Super sweet!!
Mean_Philosopher_166@reddit
It's cool!

They make black xt60w connectors...

*black krylon
PickleAlly@reddit
And heat shrink sleeves. I like it though.
Neat-Opportunity-487@reddit
True, but then you can't remove the battery for winter storage or indoor charging
PickleAlly@reddit
Just to cover the red/black cables.
