Jaromir Jagr

When I was 10 in 1993, my friend down the street had NHL Hockey for Genesis. He was a Canadiens fan, and they were like the best team in the game. I didn’t have a favorite team, but my favorite animal was the penguin, and the Pens had a very formidable lineup in the game, so they became my favorite team, and Jaromir Jagr became my favorite player to control in the game.
Now it’s 2026 and my 8 year old is into hockey, and has NHL 2025 for PS5. We played a game against each other and I discovered that the game has teams and rosters for international leagues. Jaromir Jagr owns and plays for a Czech club called Kladno, and sure enough he’s in the game.
So 33 years later and I’m still playing NHL Hockey and controlling Jagr. Madness.

It's not so much me as it is Roenick. He's good.
TheOsirisOfThisShit_@reddit
When Jon Favreau was broke, he turned down a bunch of money for just the Swingers script because he needed to be the one who directed a movie about him and his friends talking shit over genesis hockey. Vince Vaughn was clearly a veteran of sega hockey shit talking.
RockMonstrr@reddit
The Blackhawks were the best team in that game. The Roenick line from Swingers was funny because it was true; JR was the best player in that game. Then you had Chelios and Suter on D, and Ed Belfour in nets. That team was a wagon.
BuffOrange@reddit
Elite uniforms to boot. Guess I was too busy dominating in the other conference to notice.
a-ha_partridge@reddit
I love talking to hockey people and hitting them with my encyclopedic knowledge of rosters that starts and ends in 1994.
herseyhawkins33@reddit
Shoutout of NHL 96 where the vast majority of my hockey knowledge comes from LOL... Red wings were a flat out cheat code in that game.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
They were a flat-out cheat code in real life back then too.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
Watching them pass the puck around with ease while the defense tried to guess where it’s headed is something I’ll never forget. Larianov, Fetisov, Fedorov, Konstantinov, and Kozlov.
TabsAZ@reddit
So sad what happened to Konstantinov too, will never forget hearing the news
vjason@reddit
The short documentary on how the Red Wings built that line is pretty interesting, the name escapes me.
6thBornSOB@reddit
St Louis remembers…
CharmedFate@reddit
It crazy how BAD they are now, lil homies need a real cheat code!
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Look, we don’t talk about the Red Wings of the 2020s.
No, no. We live in the past.
bluemitersaw@reddit
I'm just watching the Pistons right now. Gotta take it one sport at a time in Detroit.

Sign Tarik Skubal and y'all can care about baseball too!
tqpni@reddit
Just not the past of the “Dead Things” era
seamonkey420@reddit
yea, EA NHL games from 94-98 were so good!! and agreed, Red Wings were WAY TO OP!!! Federov and Yzerman? yea.. my cousin always picked them so i had to go penguins or new york
rojoshow13@reddit
I don't remember if it was NHL 95 or 96, but I figured out how to score on every possession, even on the hardest difficulty. Skate down the side and get the defenders following you as you skate around behind the net and back around and if you do it right they'll skate into their own goalie and push him way out of position and you basically have an open net. And I absolutely used Jagr for the left handed shots and Lemieux for the right.
firegecko5@reddit
The SNES version of '94 had this exploit. I once used it to score 15 goals in one game with Pavel Bure. I don't remember if the Sega version did too.
Appropriate-Neck-585@reddit
Bure was a beast on that game
firegecko5@reddit
NHL 96 was the pinnacle of that era.
LineImpossible3958@reddit
The Red Army line was electric
Big-Excitement-400@reddit
That’s a most beautiful story, friend 🥲
Wooden-Bookkeeper473@reddit
The Los Angeles Kings.
Appropriate-Neck-585@reddit
Teemu Selanne was a fun guy to use on NHL 95
Ok_Breakfast5425@reddit
I just love when that lady slept with him and tried to blackmail him with pics. Dude pretty much said "I'm single, you're of legal age. I don't care"
firegecko5@reddit
And she only tried to get like $2,000 out of him. After salary and gambling losses, that's still chump change for him.
Appropriate_Tip_1127@reddit
I'm sorry, but from a lifelong Pittsburgher, the Penguins were not the best team in that game. It was Detroit Redwings, followed by Chicago Blackhawks.
taleofbenji@reddit
In 1999 while traveling abroad, my friend made us all go to Prague so we could visit Jagr's bar.
It was closed for renovation.
Button_Pusher10@reddit
It's not so much you as it is Roenick!
bloomsday289@reddit
You were sleeping on Lemieux - the savior of Pittsburgh hockey.
But cool story. I grew up near Pburgh and it made me happy to hear the names
jambr380@reddit
I had NHL 93, but NHL 94 is where the game went to a new level. I'm not sure a better hockey game has been made since (although I did really like NHL Hitz from the early 00s.
The Penguins were amazing in that game btw, so you chose well. I always went with the Bruins since I was a fan from Boston. That team at least had two All-Star starters in Adam Oates and Ray Bourque, as well a solid remaining starting group of Cam Neely, Don Sweeney, and Joey Juneau. Depth wasn't the best, though, so shorter periods with no line changes was always the way
aweedl@reddit
I always went with my hometown Jets. NHL 94 remains one of the few video games I have any interest in and I still always play as Winnipeg.
jambr380@reddit
They were randomly my 2nd team! I loved using Selanne and Housley
aweedl@reddit
My backup teams were the Nordiques and Whalers. WHA brethren unite (I hated the Oilers, though)!
The mid-90s was very rough on me with all the teams I loved getting relocated. After the Jets left, I barely watched hockey for 15 years until we got a franchise again.
I still think Gary Bettman is a piece of shit and reflexively loathe all sunbelt teams because of it. Q
spazz720@reddit
Buffalo Sabres were low key Amazing with LaFontaine & Mogilny
Shout out to the incredibly fast Pavel Bure, Al MacInnis’s slap shot, and the flawless line change system.
True_Inside_9539@reddit
Yes! Sabres with Hasek were super fun to play. Didn’t Bure play for Vancouver in 94? My decrepit brain struggles to remember
aweedl@reddit
I still think of Bure as a Canuck and always forget about Florida (and that brief stint with the Rangers).
spazz720@reddit
Yes…he was unstoppable in that game
True_Inside_9539@reddit
I always played Bruins too so that line is nostalgic for me, Ray Bourque was a freakin tank! Also, I noticed your Bad Religion avatar so clearly we had the same adolescence 👌🏼
jambr380@reddit
That’s awesome - you have great tastes in bands and video games
Vondelsplein@reddit
NHL 94 and Recipe for Hate? What's up new bestie
jambr380@reddit
Haha - can’t have a better time in the 90s…or today!
aweedl@reddit
I love how Jagr can’t be elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame yet because of his stubborn refusal to retire decades after most guys would’ve hung up the skates.
PepinoPicante@reddit
I can’t remember which year it was, but it was the first one with Tampa Bay. We found the worst player in the game: Shawn Chambers. His rating was like 1/100. We would play as Tampa Bay, run him as a starter and try to get the puck to him as much as possible.
Everyone else would be chanting “Shawn Chambers! Shawn Chambers!” as he tragically fumbled and failed. Even the slightest contact would take him down. He couldn’t shoot for shit.
It was pandemonium after someone finally scored with him.
Obviously, we still talk about it to this day. :)
R0botDreamz@reddit
I just want NBA2K to give Charles Barkley what he wants to have him in their game again.
IceXence@reddit
He's still playing hockey, in his fifties, for some European team. What a beast.
GarciaWolf@reddit
As a Flyers fan my I’m conflicted on this gentleman..
toddnpti@reddit
Jagr did play for the flyers for a few years, so he gets a pass.
GarciaWolf@reddit
I know that’s why I’m conflicted he did some damage here
RockMonstrr@reddit
I got to go to a game at the Montreal Forum before it closed, and it was against Jagr and the Penguins.
captain_flak@reddit
I learned this the other day and it blew me away. Can’t believe that guy is still playing.
brokenman82@reddit
He’s one of the handful of hockey players I’m actually aware of. Only because I owned this game when I was a kid
Top-Sleep-4669@reddit
Pittsburgh has just been spoiled my entire life. First Lemieux. Then Jagr. Then Crosby and Malkin.
Of course there was also the dark age when they were the worst team in the league for years.

Jaromir "The Elder Skatesman" Jagr
cleric3648@reddit
Jaromir Jagr is one of the best of all time but is still not in the hall of fame. He has to retire and stay retired for 3 years, first.
MyKidsArentOnReddit@reddit
Jagr saw Tom Brady playing at 40 and said "hold my ibuprofen". The man is unreal.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
I had the NHL game for the SNES that played "on the ice" with a behind the player perspective. They didn't have the NHLPA license, so no player names, but the Penguins had 66 (Lemieux) and 68 (Jagr) and it was amazing!
I love Jaromir. I'm so happy for him.
drudman6@reddit (OP)
NHL Stanley Cup! It was also v. good!
Green_Conclusion3443@reddit
LineImpossible3958@reddit
He’s ageless, I remember getting his rookie card in 1990-91 Upper Deck, along with Owen Nolan and Petr Nedved, and Derian Hatcher.

Feels like he just quit the NHL recently. Fuckin legend, man
Texas_Kimchi@reddit
His mullet always made me angry.
Smoky1279@reddit
I was more into Mutant League Hockey than NHL.
remoteworker9@reddit
I met him! Nice guy. I was also a 93 Pena and Canadiens fan.
