DYK Paul Atreides is of Greek origin? House Atreides traces back to King Atreus of Mycenae, father of Agamemnon, conqueror of Troy. The Royal Tombs of the Atreides are a real place in Greece. Have you watched Dune?

Yes, House Atreides are space Greeks.
SlatkiMicek@reddit
Everything originated in Greece. Even samurais, kimonos and katanas, right?
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
There are two kinds of people in the world. Greeks, and those who wished to be Greeks ⚡️
SlatkiMicek@reddit
HAHAHAHAHAHA worst of all you really think so 🤣
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Croatia? The country with a smaller economy than Athens?
Safe to say, we don't think about you at all.
SlatkiMicek@reddit
Every former yugoslavian republic has the same saying 🤣🤣🤣
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Weird, none of our Yugoslav immigrants has ever mentioned it.
SlatkiMicek@reddit
They were probably afraid of the mighty Greeks hahahahah
Typical_Way8713@reddit
Yeah cause every one, when it comes to mighty men, think about the great men of croatia lol. You people would let your gf's suck english guys dick in front of you for some more tourism .Its one thing banter from turks that actually were an empire at least and another thing when their bastard offsprings , such as croatians, albanians bosnians etc. try to make fun of Greece.
sudokuboi@reddit
Wakanda for Greeks.

This is a fictional universe, come on man.
Tramagust@reddit
The balkans are a fictional universe too

Ancient Greek world is mainly fictional, a mythology. I would say Paul is a proud Greek.
thanasis87kav@reddit
One thing is mythology, Dune on the other hand, is fantasy.
hubbabubbameqershi@reddit
Greek mythology is fiction with some real and most others fictional characters. Do you really consider it as history?
thanasis87kav@reddit
Not history, but I'd describe it as something closer to Albanianism.
CHNSK@reddit
Mythology =/= Fiction

Paulus is a Roman name. Like St. Paulus, the guy who made a Jewish sect a major religion.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Jason is a Greek name, so Jason Momoa is a proud Greek 🇬🇷
Savings_Dragonfly806@reddit
"Have you watched Dune?" Dude I don't know shit about Dune.
MrDilbert@reddit
Atreides sounds Greek.
Harkonnen sounds Finnish.
Corrino sounds Spanish. Maybe Italian.
Ha55aN1337@reddit
And the angry religiously fanatical desert people sound…
MrDilbert@reddit
Serbian, apparently.
Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
Harkonnens felt like they were inspired by Persians at least to me. (Architecture, dressing etc...)
Antti5@reddit
The story with Harkonnen is that Frank Herbert was browsing through a San Francisco area phone book for a bad-ass sounding name, and picked Harkonnen.
It is a very common Finnish name, but the correct spelling is Härkönen.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Atreides is a Greek word, it's Ατρείδες, descendants of Atreus.
Pretend-Rent-7474@reddit
The tombs depicted in the movie on Caladan are based off lycian tombs
Due_Mousse2739@reddit
I'm here to just say that Timothée Chalamet must be the worst casting choice for Dune.
i_am_someone_or_am_i@reddit
Yes it is canon that Atreides is a Greek house I believe.
Equal_Search_1268@reddit
In the extended universe it is stated that the are supposed to be their ancestors
Lothronion@reddit
The Expanded Dune has a long list of the ancestors of the House Atreides, where they clearly used Greek names, such as Demetrios, Pausanias, Thomas, while Paul Atreides himself has a middle name as Orestes.
tzoni_montana@reddit
dune has stolen elements from greek mythology
Cefalopodul@reddit
House Atreides in Dune are Space Scotland.
sorokii@reddit
The Greeks used bagpipes during antiquity so ^^
Cefalopodul@reddit
Bagpipes were invented by Getae so Atreides is Romanian.
sorokii@reddit
Sure buddy you can tell yourself that if u want
Cefalopodul@reddit
I'm not telling myself anything. They did. The poet Ovid calls it tsampona.
Fatalaros@reddit
Atreus is not mythological. He is confirmed to be an Achaean wanax by the Hittites.
Ecstatic_Top_8797@reddit
So, yes in the original books they are because the Bene Geserit have plans that cross millenia, trying to find the perfect mix of genes to create Kwisatz haderach, they want part of the Atreides because they produce charismatic leaders and it is a clear lineage. But after Frank Herbert died and his son took over, he wrote some prequels that it was only a moniker. So it is
RasyonelRumi@reddit
My suggestion to you is to read did the greeks believe in their myths by Paul Vayne.
SalientSalmorejo@reddit
Everyone knows he is really Albanian!
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
Unfortunately, the subreddit has declined in quality. The questions being asked here have absolutely nothing to do with the Balkans themselves anymore. It's always the same: Greece feat. Turkey Turkey feat. Greece Albanian feat. Greece Greece feat. North Macedonia And vice versa. Etc., etc., etc. Come on, guys, this can't be right, can it? The answers seem to come almost exclusively from people in the diaspora, or not from Balkan people at all. What a shame.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Ask better questions, be the change you wish to see! 🌸
Hefty_Jaguar4305@reddit
But you have to admit that these questions really have nothing to do with the Balkans. I mean, come on, it's a fictional series, Dune. The actor himself isn't Greek nor balkan.
bruhmanbruuh@reddit
Remember back in covid quarantine, we used to ACTUALLY have better moderation and more quality questions and interactions?
THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
Shtapiq@reddit
Kimono is a Greek word too if I remember correctly.

Your memory didn't betray you
LucillaGalena@reddit
Sure, why not. I'm descended from Brutus.
Not that one, the other-other one.
Mad_Kronos@reddit
In the books it is 100% confirmed that House Atreides are descendants of Agamemnon,(but they also have even older ancestors, trailing at least to Mesopotamia)
kuzurikuroi@reddit
And freeman sing serbian songs...balkan was is and always will be the maker of future gemerations.
Beautiful_Limit_2719@reddit
I know that the writer was against the Soviet Union and that's why he named the main villain Vladimir. He found this Harkonnen name in a Finnish phone book. It's really about a human civilization from an earth that destroyed itself and settled new planets. There's a mention of a 2nd Jihad war, when people fought against machines, which is why there are no machines/robots in the film.
Moist-Park-4781@reddit
He is obviously a pure Illyrian thoroughbred. That's why their house sigil is the Albanian eagle 👌🇦🇱👐 /s

To be honest with you, Paul seems more like a greek born Albanian. His parents moved to Greece in the 90s, changed identity got Greek passport and later Paul moved to UK to deal with spice trade. Spice trade! You know what I mean right?
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
God... You may be right.

Voldypants_420@reddit
There are a ton of Turkish references throughout the series as well, the empire being the equivalent of Ottomans while the civilian officers of Sardaukars being named Kayı, even the vendors selling water shouting Soo, Soo, Sook! (su, su, soğuk!).
As if -wait for it- Frank Herbert wanted to picture how politics and religions are engineered, and the prophets and strongman figures are created to serve the purposes of people who hold power while the main power is held by whoever controls the energy (oil - spice) in real life through a sci-fi setting.

That’s possible the movie contains plenty of Islamic, Anatolian, and Lycian elements.
JaniFool@reddit
Orange Catholicism sounds like something modern shitposters would make up
DevilBySmile@reddit
there is also gold like: Mahayana Christianity, Zensunni Catholicism, and Buddislam
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Indeed, the Fremen are based on Berber people of North Africa, and there are plenty of Islamic and Arab traits throughout.
Legal-Stranger-4890@reddit
they explicitly practice Zen-Sunnism. A sort of counterpart to the Orange Catholicism that is the dominant religion of the protagonists. less of an inherent contradiction, though
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
I havent read the book but while watching the movie the events on the desert planet strongly reminded me of Islamic history. Also, the Lycian style sarcophagi specifically caught my eye.
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
That's true! That's what I thought when I watched this scene as well, they look exactly like Lycian sarcophagi. I've seen one myself when a crosses to Lycia from Kastellorizo, pretty cool.
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
And here are some original examples from Türkiye.

I always thought they were Iberian/Spanish with the bullfighting
freddo_expresso@reddit (OP)
Bullfighting was HUGE in ancient Crete, the bull was basically the sacred animal of the Minoans and also their national symbol.
Bullfighting was called Τατροκαθάψια (Taurocathapsia) and here is a very famous fresco from 1,450 BC

JaniFool@reddit
Linear A being lost to time is one of the frustrating things to ever happen. I gotta know what the Minoans were writing down.

I have a headcanon that Harkonnens are Uralic descendants.
