Need help to back up

I’m a new driver for four months and I’m still working on my backing up. My company gave me a load to Liverpool, NY and the delivery dock is that green roof. How would you suggest to back up into that dock from the street? I’ve only backed up from the street just once and I was sweating my ass off the whole time.

Hey bro, how did it go?
angelnight227@reddit (OP)
I just got to the delivery. I was coming northbound on Old Liverpool Road and I stopped by the shoulder in front of the with my hazard lights on (only enough room for half of my truck, so the other cars still had to go on the left lane to go around me) and I asked one of the guys to spot me and stop traffic for a few minutes. I made a left turn into Woerner Ave and set up for an offset straight back, and from there it was a straight back with a few small adjustments to avoid their vans parked on both sides of me. Both sides of traffic was stopped while I backed up but thankfully it only took a few minutes. Building with the green roof actually was their workshop and not a dock, but they are unloading me with a forklift in front of it.
I was having really bad anxiety over this the past few days but I am really grateful for everybody’s suggestions on this. Thanks everyone!

Good job!! Once, assume control in traffic and trust in your skill. You'll be fine... Make sure you're aware of everything as you're making maneuvers .
Grimwulfer@reddit
Turn on your do anything you want lights and get it done.
DANO8503@reddit
Pull in to sub parking lot next door around back and when you pull back up front towards Liverpool rd you’ll be set up for almost a straight back. They will move any cars for you
DANO8503@reddit
If not and you have to do it from the road you want to do this as a driver side back from the street. Take your time get out lots and don’t worry about traffic, you could even call a sheriff to help stop traffic to get it in there
HelloGlarc@reddit
Come around jreck subs
humblecocoliving123@reddit
Bro this is easy, just block the traffic and pull all the way straight where it say dead end and just back up. Try to go early in the morning so less traffic
homiebat@reddit
I would get someone from the business watch traffic for you remember you have the right to get on the other side of the road if you need the space to get lined up
xur_ntte@reddit
That’s street is probably tight as hell I’ll use the big parking lots and set up and back either the sub shop or the church across the street and get out and look
Time_Muffin_7218@reddit
Stay off 370 there is a low bridge near by
PutridContribution41@reddit
Go around the corner again and back up sight side.
Round-Guarantee4948@reddit
Id say come at it from the south and park in that right lane and throw them 4ways on and let em off load at the road
happyexit7@reddit
Facing south I would pull out into on coming traffic lane and sight side back in.
LucHighwalker@reddit
Pulling into woerner and then doing an offset back would definitely be the easiest. Ignore the impatient drivers. You're bigger than them.
Also definitely call them ahead of time and make sure they want you to back into there or if they just unload you from the street. Also to make sure that's actually the right address. I once spent over an hour trying to get into a port just to learn that the receiver moved out of the port to down the street a few months prior.
No_Teaching_8273@reddit
Turn around at the intersection ( turn right and back up) and sight side or , ( come in with the pick up on your left ) as a car hauler that would be my best option with my limited turning radius .
Specific_Ad_4128@reddit
I’m new to truck driving but not to backing up big trailers so grain of salt with this one. If you are worried about or stressed about making traffic wait or anything like that (performance anxiety) best thing I can say is “fuck em” You’re doing your job the safest you can. As far as backing in you’re gonna make it too hard on yourself if you don’t use that side street. Always do a follow up when you get on site because the gps sometimes makes things look bigger/smaller
Feisty-Season-5305@reddit
Pull up the residential street then practically back straight up to the dock
SortPutrid5937@reddit
Find a route to come in from the other direction. It will be much easier if you came in with the business on the left, driver side of your vehicle. Not only is it easier for new drivers to sight side back but the angle of the driveway is more forgiving this way. Dont be afraid to command the entire street while backing. I would wait for traffic to clear a bit or have someone block traffic for you and completely use the whole road, sweeping left into the opposite lane of traffic to get the trl closer amd back out to the right lane to create an angle that's more favorable. Then I would back. You have space to pull forward onto the street in front of the business if your backing skills are poor. Don't be afraid to get out and look!
Redsoxdragon@reddit
Come in from north to south so you tame the shallower angle.
Ask one of the guys to spot you and stop traffic.
Take your time. No need to rush it and hit something
Mindes13@reddit
If possible, I would come down from Liverpool Lane to set up for a sight side back and use the entire road
Ancient_Cucumber2573@reddit
Dude park on the street beside them and ask them to hold traffic for u most of the time these places don’t have docks they just tell you back it in any way then they unload u best bet would be turn left into woerner ave straighten out park ask them to hold traffic and back in
Itiari@reddit
Ask for someone to block traffic if needed, pull into woerner ave and back it in. This would probably be far easier than trying to get it in right off the street, as long as traffic can be controlled.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
I didn't even see that street. That would be the easiest for sure.
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
Well, with the direction you show yourself coming from you're going to have to blindside it. Seems a bad idea to ask that of a new guy. I doubt you can avoid it though. Remember you have electric mirrors and if you can get someone to spot you. That's a tight blind side since It seems to be at an angle.
IBringTheHeat2@reddit
There’s empty lots you use to turn around just north of it. Turn around and do a normal back into it
IVEGOTAHUGEHAND@reddit
If you can drive up the 370 just west of that road and turn right onto the 137. You'll have a much easier time backing in.
nicerakk@reddit
Don't do this. 370 is a parkway. Street view shows a big no trucks sign where you get off on old liverpool road
IVEGOTAHUGEHAND@reddit
Yeah i didn't check street view, good catch though.
nicerakk@reddit
I first thought about this too. I had to street view it. Didn't look like there was any overpasses to go under until I seen the exit. There's an overpass as soon as he would get off
nicerakk@reddit
Make a left on the side st (Woerner Ave) the back it into the driveway. If you are worried about backing thru the street by yourself, ask someone from the business to spot you.
I looked at that Hwy 390 and it's a parkway and with no trucks allowed sign at the overpass.
jmzstl@reddit
Are you positive that’s a dock? The business is a van/RV outfitter, so it’s probably just a workshop where they do the outfitting. I would bet they can just unload you from the street.
If you call them and confirm it’s a dock, just come down the street from the other side, pull across traffic onto the shoulder in front of the business and when traffic is clear you’ll have an easy sight side back.
madbillsfan@reddit
Back in off of Woerner or call them and ask what’s the best way.
unftp-0@reddit
I personally would pull into that street Woerner Ave and just straight back, use your horn when backing up to let people know you’re backing up. Hopefully that street doesn’t get too much traffic
CryptographerOk3679@reddit
You can either sight side it or turn into Woerner Ave going forward and back up from there; pretty much a straight back
spizsam@reddit
They will probably move some trucks for you to straight back
ToeSimilar5163@reddit
Not the worst blindside if that road isn’t busy. However, I might try and find a way to approach from the other direction so you can 90 off the sight side. Backing off the street isn’t a big deal, just throw on your hazards, be aware of your surroundings, and make your intent known.
ToeSimilar5163@reddit
Also, don’t tell the super truckers but if push really came to shove, take a peek at that lawn directly across from the shed. If it’s not residential and you really can’t get it in another way, you could touch the grass and just have an offset back.
czerka@reddit
This is terrible advice. You have no idea what's in or under that grass. Stick to stuff you can't break, like the wide ass 4 lane road with shoulders and plenty of side streets.
If folks at the receiver are willing to block traffic for a second, looks like you could pull on to Woerner and make it nearly a straight line back.
ToeSimilar5163@reddit
Yeah, if “take a peek” means nothing to you other than pull right onto it then you’d have ground to stand on. Not only that, but I specifically included the parameter of if you can’t get it in the hole otherwise.
Also, you cannot see oncoming traffic in either direction if you pull onto Woerner and thus are fully relying on someone blocking traffic.
Mind you, I wouldn’t have done any of this and would instead just 90 in. But OP is uncomfortable in his backing and so additional insight was warranted.
Auquaholic@reddit
You'll either pull into the first driveway and out the second to finish setting up for a site side back, if there's room. If not, you'll site side from the street. I would 100% call them first and ask. You might not have to back into it at all, I don't see s dock. If you can't call, use the shoulder to park and walk down there. Ask in person and look everything over. Also, if you do have to back in and the street is busy, that's the best time to ask for someone to help with traffic
FLcbdfarmer@reddit
Use as much of woernor ave as you need no matter which way you come down the street.
Packingheat248@reddit
Ask the consignee to have a couple guys to come out and block traffic while you back up and come from the North.
Round-Guarantee4948@reddit
Call ahead and give em an eta to assist at stopping impatient drivers
Charlie_Hustler@reddit
I would approach coming from the north so you can sight side it. Use the Woerner Ave Street for your pull-ups if needed. If your unsure about something GOAL. Good luck driver 👍
