How can I drink like 3 pots of coffee in a 12 hour shift and go home and sleeping a baby, while some young girl dies from the equivalent of a few cups? Is this a skill issue?
You should consider your sleep depth also. Do you spring out of bed in the morning, or do you have to fight sleep inertia?
I find if I have coffee after about 1PM, I still sleep like a baby but have more sleep inertia in the morning. It's worse if I eat a meal before bed though
FDA recommends 400 mg of caffeine a day. Who knows how much was in one can of the four she was drinking a day - let alone the other bullshit that was probably in there.
One usually keeps me tied over for the day. The second I even think about cracking a second one, I get jittery. Girly design aside, they’re pretty good taste wise.
Energy drinks tend to have more caffeine than two cups of black coffee, a couple thousand milligrams of taurine and other stimulants, and about 20 teaspoons of sugar.
Ah yes, because refined sugar is freely available in nature, right? Didn't realize I was talking to a brilliant chemist.
You're comparing one unnatural thing to another unnatural thing. If you can avoid both refined sugar and artificial sweeteners then you should. On the other hand, if you are choosing between something that is proven to cause insulin resistance/obesity/diabetes vs. something that all existing evidence suggests is safe, then the choice is clear. It would be one thing if we're talking about a gram or two of sugar, but sodas/energy drinks usually contain dozens of grams of pure, refined obesity powder.
But if concerns about "lab chemicals" (lmao) are what you want to cite as a reason to keep guzzling diluted pancake syrup then be my guest. Just don't bring up what's natural or what we are "supposed" to eat when you're talking about refined sugar.
Artificial sweeteners are not benign for the microbiome of the gut, there is always a trade off, but it's probably better than all that sugar. If I need a boost I just get a cup of black coffee.
I think when you have a shit ton like you, it's not as bad if you have pretty much the same amount every day. But when you just randomly have a ton. I think that's when it gets too spicy
But your amount probably buttfucks your sleep, I think the half-life of caffeine in humans is ~12 hours
It's got about 6 hours to half-life, I hit the first 400mg within 2 hours of waking up then another 125mg at 1PM and 3PM. I've always gone to bed around 1AM
I think my average six hours of sleep is pretty decent quality lmao
taurine has been studied to be well tolerated at 6 grams a day. It's not a stimulant either as it has calming effects on your body to counteract caffeine's side effects which might be why people drink too much of those energy drinks
First time I ever drank an Alani I started shaking because it was too much caffeine and I felt like a crackhead who just took a hit of speed and cleaned my whole house. I can drink them now just fine but I rarely have them now I just stick to monsters or redbulls once in awhile
When I was going through a hard course for work, I'd do 3 reigns a day. The shift I'd drink a 2nd reign I'd feel like I was dying, as that drink was taking me over 600 mg for a shift / 900 mg for the day. I literally couldn't imagine taking thay much leisurely

the recommended dose is very far off the lethal dose. it takes a downright shocking amount of caffeine to kill a person. those videos you see online of dudes chugging 20 energy drinks don't need to be faked, a large man can handle that much without being at too great a risk.
Yeah pretty much. LD50 (Lethal Dosage for atleast 50% of the people) of caffeine is ~10grams. Given no heart deffects that is.
In general, stimulants are much harder to overdose on since its like climbing a staircase. You die on stair 30, have to be hospitalized on stairs 20-30 perhaps, yet feel extra harsh jitteriness, uneasiness, puking and sickness before you even reach 10th. Perhaps with caffeine its even more noticeable due to peripheral stimulation, lots of people here mention metheads but are perhaps not aware that, atleast subjectively, and if it's d-meth, it feels much cleaner than your regular 2 cans of energy drink.
However one should not normalize excessive stimulant usage with this "Your body is going to know well before you have taken too much" princople.
The problem with stimulants is damage over time (chronic), not immediate "heart explosions" and ovderdose (acute).
And another thing is that, even though stimulants seem great as a physical performance booster, thats actually a way to "get a couple staircases up" sometimes, as if you combine large stimulant intake + physical exortion + perhaps a "bad day" regarding nutrient intake/sleep, the damage can get exponential.
I bet this unlucky girl, rest in peace, had both of these going for her, both chronic damage from abusing caffeine over given ammount of time + "bad day" to be overstimulated on on top of physical exertion.
I'd also theorize it impacted sleep. Some guy game to our college classes to warn us about binging energy drinks to stay awake he was pulling extra shifts and working way too much. Got diagnosed with some heart problem iirc. You need to rest
She didn't just drink 4. She drank 4 a day. For who knows how long. Most people think caffeine is perfectly healthy, and there's no negative consequences to consuming it. And most of the time, they're right. But anything in high enough doses will kill you. Even water, the most basic necessity for life, will kill you if you drink too much too quickly. All it takes is 100 ounces (less than a gallon) consumed within a couple of hours. Remember kids, the dose makes the poison.
Pretty certain there was some undiagnosed heart issue. And no it's not the company's fault when you drink what's intended for an entire family, ignoring your body's obvious increasing distress, and hurt yourself. You can die from drinking too much water too fast, but Culligan shouldn't liable if you do.
I have a terrible caffeine addiction. I don’t know anyone who consumes more than I do, while I have gotten down to about 600mg a day, at my peak I was consuming about 1.2-1.5 grams a day.
Absolutely there were undiscovered health problems, I stay away from the energy drink she’s holding because it’s no where near strong enough for me (I don’t remember the exact caffeine content but I know it’s sub 200mg), 4 of them will not kill the average person. If your sensitive to caffeine it might make you heart feel like it’s jumping out of your chest but it would not kill you unless there are other things at play.

The point is not the fact that it's in a can or a bottle though, is it ? 1.6L of vodka in a day would kill most of us.
I used vodka as an example to show that firms should not be held accountable for their customers' stupid behaviour.
Drinking 4 cans of energy drink per day is obviously a bad idea. Anything in excess is dangerous, this is common knowledge.
Of course it's sad this young girl died of it, I sympathize with her and her loved ones.
But this looks like an easily avoidable death by just using common sense.
My point was that a can is an intended serving size for energy drinks, but definitely not for vodka. If 4x an intended serving size can kill healthy people, then there is an issue.
You can overdose if you take more than 14 Tylenol capsules in 24 hours. You can buy a 200 pack right now at Walmart with no prescription or anything. Your point is stupid and the vodka comparison isn’t.
It isn’t though. Pretty much any energy drink says it’s 2 servings per can. Is Marlboro at fault for smokers smoking a pack of cigs a day? At some point you gotta accept personal responsibility my dude.
But you only thought it was dumb because you didn't read the OP closely enough. 4 drinks of Vodka of over a long period of time can absolutely have very bad effects.
>Drinking "only 4 cans" of vodka would kill a lot of people
I don't know what volume you're thinking of when you say 4 cans of vodka but this is entirely irrelevant either way. "only 4 cans of vodka" is a crazy amount of vodka. "only 4 cans" of an energy drink does not come anywhere near the lethal dose of caffeine for an adult no matter what energy drink you are consuming 4 cans of.
so yeah if 4 cans of an energy drink is somehow able to kill a person then something is seriously wrong with those energy drinks because it couldn't just be the caffeine that killed the person.
No no individuals cannot be held accountable for anything. Governments should decide everything and control companies as much as possible. They know what is best for us citizens. Also citizens shouldn’t criticize governments
I’m aware it’s sarcasm mate. That’s the point I’m making. You’re using satire to make a point that didn’t need to be made. You’re preaching to the choir.
I drank 3 Celsius energy drink one evening and dust sleep for 24 hours. Checked the can, warns to only drink a maximum of 2 a day. You could safely drin more than 2 cans if beer a day, which is crazy.
Coffee is significantly weaker than most energy drinks yet most people will agree that drinking "only" four cups of coffee in a single day, especially on a daily baisis is dangerous for your heart, so I am pretty sure that this is most likely a self-preservation instinct thing
A lot of people drink four cups a day, that isn't a huge amount even for the average person. Coffee varies based on caffeine content, four cups is as little as 320 mg. That's a decent amount of caffeine but not enormous.
This issue is highly dependent on genetics. Some people metabolize caffeine very quickly and can even drink 10-12 cups of coffee a day with little noticeable problems.
Pretty sure we were living on rip-it, sketchy preworkout supplements, caffeine pills and sketchy street vendor food. Still not sure which one of them caused guys to shit themselves on patrol, though.
One day at 800 mg is going to be fine. The post said she was drinking 4 cans per day. It’s no surprise that a small girl regularly doubling the maximum daily recommended dose of caffeine had a cardiac event.
Maybe people should read directions? Why do we have all this health information on products if people won’t pay attention to it? What happened to personal responsibility.
Paint a big red skull warning sign on it, add that death can come swiftly if limit is transgressed.
Anything less than that feels like deadly eggshells and barely visible tripwires everywhere and you can just stumble into it
4 cans is a whole fucking lot of caffeine dude. I had a friend do the same thing with only two cans of monster a day and he ended up having a heart attack after doing that for over a year
Really isn’t the fault of the company, especially since the cans explicitly state that you shouldn’t have more than 2 a day or any at all if you’re under the age of 18. The parents are at fault here.
4 cans of modern energy drinks has 200-300 mg of caffeine per drink which can be 800-1200mg of caffeine in a day. If consumed in a short period of time that can definitely be enough to precipitate cardiac arrhythmias
The strongest energy drinks on the market (other than certain niche ready to drink pre-workout supplements that you can only really find at bodybuilding focused supplement stores) are 300mg of caffeine/serving.
4 of those is 1200mg of caffeine, 3 times the FDA recommended daily caffeine limit.
A standard pot of black coffee is 700-1200mg of caffeine. 4 of those energy drinks is equivalent to a strong pot of black coffee.
If a strong pot of black coffee can kill you, there is almost certainly something else going on. A congenital heart defect/arrhythmia, a coingestant, or another environmental factor.
You know what bro, either I'm some sort of biological anomaly or it's iust her body's skill issue in some way.
At my worst, I've literally drank a solid 7 16oz. Red Bull's in the span of 4 hours and faced zero issues. I've gone through 3 16oz 4 packs in under 24 hours before too.
I still pretty regularly bang out 2 of whatever energy drinks I've got in my fridge whenever I take my morning adderall.
I've been taking it for years and caffeine affects me the same way. I need to take enough to kill a donkey before I even start feeling it and somehow my blood pressure's always perfect.
Each can had 200mg of caffeine. Recommended daily max for healthy adults is 400mg so as a young teen probably less than that. She was consuming at least 2x the daily recommended amount everyday.
Either way everyone knows too much caffeine is not good for you, energy drink or coffee there’s still a healthy limit. Even caffeine pouches with 50mg have a warning to limit it to 8 per day.
She was weak as fuck, I abused a shitload of various substances when i was a teen including but not only pcp and oxys and i turned out just fine (Well thats a stretch lol but I'm half decent I'd like to think)
Its literally written on the can to not consume more than one can a day?? Like If I drink 4 times the daily recommended ammount from a lot of things its harmful to my body. Imagine i drink 3-4 bottles of wine a day, I'd probably wind up dead too? Like eating 100 hambugers and then going but ahhh its food i should have been safe? Overconsuming anything can kill you pretty much? What a stupid debate.
Chronic consumption of exactly the daily intake is potentially fatal if she had underlying health issues, and if she didn't, it's really unlikely that double the dose would have done it. She had other issues.
The examiners literally confirmed she didn’t, have you done any research into this? And she wasn’t drinking the daily intake, she was drinking double that which does come with risks. Thats why the FDA daily dose is 400 mg and not 800 mg
No, she’s holding an Alani, those things are fucking 250mg a can or something. I’m a big guy and I can’t take more than one of them without feeling like shit.
"Feeling like shit" is no where close to dying, the fatal dose of caffeine is typically closer to dozens of cans of energy drinks unless she's especially sensitive.
The reason is called low therapeutic index of anesthesia class drugs. Their active effective dosages are close to their LD50.
Caffeine is 150–200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass. Her death will be examined to be either liver troubles hindering caffeine cleanup or extremely low tolerances
You should see my cousin at 65, crack and alcohol his whole life, multiple motorcycle crashes, lives in a studio still kicking. He’ll live forever and he’s fun to party with
Crapload of ppl die in car crashes without their fault and it's somewhat okay since we don't ban cars. But consuming some shit by choice despite health recommendation and overdosing? Yeah, totally need to ban that.
the problem is not 4 can a day, i have seen bricklayers and IT contractors gulping down 6-7 cans a day without batting an eye. the problem is that if you start downing 4 cans out of the blue thinking its gonna give you a boost like the spinach to popeye. then you are an idiot.
also, adults usually build tolerance to caffeine gradually over their life. a child? (girl was 17) not so much
Did the energy drink company force her to drink as many cans of redbull as her heart could take a day or was that done by her own stupidity? I’d say it’s a minor form of modern day natural selection.
I drink a mini Red Bull here and there, 1 Alani will fuck me up - if she’s doing 4 a day then she is regarded but I know several girls in 06’ when monsters first came out that would pound 2 cans a day - granted they look like sht and their look it’s what stopped me from drinking more than 1 can a day lol
This is like that chick who died from drinking Charged Lemonade from Panera bread. She drank several cups adding up to over 1000mg but she also had a heart condition. Most people can drink large amount of caffeine and be fine but people with health issues may not. Same thing with the 1 chip challenge.
Energy drinks are just as bad as smoking if not worse. Ive been addicted to them since I was 14 and im in my 30s now. The only reason smoking gets a worse rap is because of the mountains of studies done for almost a century. Kids under 18 shouldn't be consuming something so toxic for your health but im guessing that would hurt big chain convenience store profits too much for anything to be done about it.
They definitely put too much damn caffeine in drinks in my opinion to be as easily accessible as they are. Young people having heart attacks and/or dying isn’t uncommon since 200mg-300mg has become the norm. Most ree’s are just drinking them because they like them, not because they need that much damn caffeine.
Energy drinks were originally intended to be consumed only when really needed, and limited to a couple at most. Now, people drink them as if they were water or soda and complain that drinking four is nothing and shouldn't harm them. It’s no wonder there are so many underlying weight and health issues. The few times I’ve tried one, it felt like drinking 'cancer' because of how artificial they taste
Not saying whenever it's healthy or not, but there is no recorded death caused by a caffeinated drink, be it energy drink, coffee or any other. Every single recorded caffeine related death is either from overconsumption of caffeine pills or caffeine powder, one example being of a bodybuilder consuming 200 cups equivalent of caffeine in short time.
Even with heart disease, 4 energy drinks would be pushing it. More likely is that energy drinks were heavy on her kidneys and she was dehydrated, although I don't know specifics of this case. If you do sports, please drink water in addition to energy drinks.
Energy drinks originally were advised to be only consumed at occasions where it's really needed and only a couple at most, now people drink them like if they were water or ordinary soda and complain that drinking 4 is nothing at shouldn't ail you, no wonder the underlying overweight and health issues you people have. The very few occasions I tried one felt like drinking cancer for how artificial they taste.
Alani has 200mg caffeine per can, the recommended max a day for most people with no heart issues is 600mg max, she was having 800mg caffeine daily, makes sense if it was long term.
Damn maybe I should lower my caffeine intake. I take a 200mg caffeine pill when I wake up, then sip on a monster at work, then drink another when I go to the gym during my lunch break
I sleep just fine and feel fine though. Maybe my tolerance is just super high
Yeah the recommended amount of caffeine per day to adults is 400mg, but the acute toxicity that derives from an intoxication comes when you pass the 150-200mg per Kg (in adults at least)
If she was, say, 50kg; then, poisoning should occur roughly around 7.5gr/day intake. That’s a lot, that would require more than 4 cans of an energy drink.
The thing is, we don’t know what actual
Concentration of caffeine was in her bloodstream; according to literature, the >50mg/L threshold has proven consistent to determine poisoning, but it is not until >80 that it reaches a Fatal amount.
What happened then? She could’ve:
- died of something else entirely
- had an underlying medical Condition exacerbated by the caffeine
- was extremely unlucky and did die with a small amount of caffeine ( even considering she must’ve developed some degree of tolerance, given the daily intake)
I've had to respond to medical events of table games dealers passing out while dealing and standing up.
Back in the early 00s at the big rise of energy drinks i worked security at a casino, card dealers like to party and guzzle energy drinks the next day.
Id assume your toleration would grow consuming that much caffeine daily. Also a really great advertising campaign for energydrinks, "Makes your heart explode!".
Tolerance is a poor indicator of the toll a drug can take on your body physiologically. How you’re feeling is not related to what it’s actually doing to you.
Is she shotgunning them back to back? Spacing them out? Normally 4 a day will just give you crippling heartburn and high blood pressure which will eventually kill you but everyone knows that.
She probably wasn't eating a healthy diet at all if she was drinking that many energy drinks. Caffeine can suppress hunger. That much caffeine is tolerable if you're eating a healthy balanced diet around it. If you're only consuming shitty zero sugar energy drinks all day you're fixing to be in bad shape.
The company is being sued for inadequate warnings on their beverages. The teen had an enlarged heart which was presumed to be caused by caffeine intake. The beverages that were consumed have 200mg of caffeine, which is twice the recommended maximum amount for a teenager. So, if the 4 can number is accurate she was drinking 8 times the recommended maximum.

I bet this unlucky girl, rest in peace, had both of these going for her, both chronic damage from abusing caffeine over given ammount of time + "bad day" to be overstimulated on on top of physical exertion.

Yeah. Plus the 400 mg of caffeine a day is for adults, this chick started this habbit in the mid teens.

I'd also theorize it impacted sleep. Some guy game to our college classes to warn us about binging energy drinks to stay awake he was pulling extra shifts and working way too much. Got diagnosed with some heart problem iirc. You need to rest
peppermintaltiod@reddit
Monster has 160 mg per can. So 4 cans is 640mg. For comparison coffee is 100 mg per 8oz and black tea is 30-50 mg per 8oz.
The FDA recommendation is based off of what a grown adult can consume a day without too much risk of developing heart palpations.
Caffeine also effects teens more than adults.

Double the intake when she drinks 4. Also who knows why the real number is.
A-DustyOldQrow@reddit
She didn't just drink 4. She drank 4 a day. For who knows how long. Most people think caffeine is perfectly healthy, and there's no negative consequences to consuming it. And most of the time, they're right. But anything in high enough doses will kill you. Even water, the most basic necessity for life, will kill you if you drink too much too quickly. All it takes is 100 ounces (less than a gallon) consumed within a couple of hours. Remember kids, the dose makes the poison.
ConscientiousPath@reddit
Pretty certain there was some undiagnosed heart issue. And no it's not the company's fault when you drink what's intended for an entire family, ignoring your body's obvious increasing distress, and hurt yourself. You can die from drinking too much water too fast, but Culligan shouldn't liable if you do.
WeightedPaper@reddit

Drinking "only 4 cans" of vodka would kill a lot of people. Should we blame the company making vodka, or the idiots that drink 4 cans of it ?
The_Daily_Herp@reddit
no shit 32 ounces of vodka would kill someone.
extreme_cuddling@reddit
There are people that drink eight cups of coffee a day and are fine
tehringworm@reddit
A can is not a standard serving of vodka. Four servings wouldn’t cause long-term harm to an average person.
Zr0bert@reddit
The point is not the fact that it's in a can or a bottle though, is it ? 1.6L of vodka in a day would kill most of us. I used vodka as an example to show that firms should not be held accountable for their customers' stupid behaviour. Drinking 4 cans of energy drink per day is obviously a bad idea. Anything in excess is dangerous, this is common knowledge. Of course it's sad this young girl died of it, I sympathize with her and her loved ones. But this looks like an easily avoidable death by just using common sense.
tehringworm@reddit
My point was that a can is an intended serving size for energy drinks, but definitely not for vodka. If 4x an intended serving size can kill healthy people, then there is an issue.
WeeTheDuck@reddit
4x the serving size of anticoagulant pills can certainly kill healthy people. What's your point
tehringworm@reddit
One you can buy at 7-11, and the other requires a note signed by a doctor….
GoldenGlobeWinnerRDJ@reddit
You can overdose if you take more than 14 Tylenol capsules in 24 hours. You can buy a 200 pack right now at Walmart with no prescription or anything. Your point is stupid and the vodka comparison isn’t.
tehringworm@reddit
Go smoke 200 Marlboros, literally nothing will happen lol
GoldenGlobeWinnerRDJ@reddit
It isn’t though. Pretty much any energy drink says it’s 2 servings per can. Is Marlboro at fault for smokers smoking a pack of cigs a day? At some point you gotta accept personal responsibility my dude.
TheSkyIsBeautiful@reddit
it wasn't 4x intended serving. It's 4x intended serving DAILY for who knows how long
tehringworm@reddit
I don’t know the particulars of this case; only that the vodka comparison is dumb.
Obi-Brawn-Kenobi@reddit
But you only thought it was dumb because you didn't read the OP closely enough. 4 drinks of Vodka of over a long period of time can absolutely have very bad effects.
JojiImpersonator@reddit

Coffee is significantly weaker than most energy drinks yet most people will agree that drinking "only" four cups of coffee in a single day, especially on a daily baisis is dangerous for your heart, so I am pretty sure that this is most likely a self-preservation instinct thing
FinancialElephant@reddit
A lot of people drink four cups a day, that isn't a huge amount even for the average person. Coffee varies based on caffeine content, four cups is as little as 320 mg. That's a decent amount of caffeine but not enormous.
This issue is highly dependent on genetics. Some people metabolize caffeine very quickly and can even drink 10-12 cups of coffee a day with little noticeable problems.

freet0@reddit

VeritablyVersatile@reddit
The strongest energy drinks on the market (other than certain niche ready to drink pre-workout supplements that you can only really find at bodybuilding focused supplement stores) are 300mg of caffeine/serving.
4 of those is 1200mg of caffeine, 3 times the FDA recommended daily caffeine limit.
A standard pot of black coffee is 700-1200mg of caffeine. 4 of those energy drinks is equivalent to a strong pot of black coffee.
If a strong pot of black coffee can kill you, there is almost certainly something else going on. A congenital heart defect/arrhythmia, a coingestant, or another environmental factor.
blutigetranen@reddit

I still pretty regularly bang out 2 of whatever energy drinks I've got in my fridge whenever I take my morning adderall.
Maybe_this_time_fr@reddit

bellymeat@reddit

Mastodon1371@reddit
Each can had 200mg of caffeine. Recommended daily max for healthy adults is 400mg so as a young teen probably less than that. She was consuming at least 2x the daily recommended amount everyday.
ConscientiousPath@reddit
Tolerance is a thing though. She almost certainly had some undiagnosed heart issue for this to kill her.
NebuchanderTheGreat@reddit
400mg is only like 3-4 cups of coffee.
Mastodon1371@reddit
Caffeine isn’t the only factor here
NebuchanderTheGreat@reddit
You were only talking about caffeine, though.
Mastodon1371@reddit
Either way everyone knows too much caffeine is not good for you, energy drink or coffee there’s still a healthy limit. Even caffeine pouches with 50mg have a warning to limit it to 8 per day.
LeloucheL@reddit
yeah height and weight matters the most. A 17 yr old latina girl is around 5ft tall lol she was cooked with even 1-2 cans if it was daily
JKCsaba@reddit
What a stupid debate.
nnuunn@reddit
She must have had underlying heart issues, the FDA says 400mg a day is totally safe, so way more should be pretty safe, too.
clompin@reddit
Nah she didn’t have any health conditions, most likely chronic elevated blood pressure did it
nnuunn@reddit
Chronic elevated blood pressure is an underlying health condition
clompin@reddit
Only if it was diagnosed, it was caused by energy drinks, not lack of physical equilibrium
nnuunn@reddit
Again, 400mg is safe safe per the FDA, so 800mg (assuming it was 4 allani) should be fine unless she's got some underlying health issues.
clompin@reddit
Yes, but 4 cans a day for weeks on end? She was in sports and cheerleading and she made the drink her identity.
nnuunn@reddit
Yes, 400mg is for daily consumption
clompin@reddit
You’re not getting it
nnuunn@reddit
No, I get it, you're just wrong
clompin@reddit
No I’m not, chronic consumption of twice the daily intake of caffeine is potentially fatal
nnuunn@reddit
Chronic consumption of exactly the daily intake is potentially fatal if she had underlying health issues, and if she didn't, it's really unlikely that double the dose would have done it. She had other issues.
clompin@reddit
The examiners literally confirmed she didn’t, have you done any research into this? And she wasn’t drinking the daily intake, she was drinking double that which does come with risks. Thats why the FDA daily dose is 400 mg and not 800 mg
nnuunn@reddit
The examiners said that there was nothing else in her system, that's not the same thing as no other underlying conditions.
You know the FDA includes a safety margin, yes? It's not like 400mg is fine and 401mg will kill you.
bellymeat@reddit
No, she’s holding an Alani, those things are fucking 250mg a can or something. I’m a big guy and I can’t take more than one of them without feeling like shit.
nnuunn@reddit
"Feeling like shit" is no where close to dying, the fatal dose of caffeine is typically closer to dozens of cans of energy drinks unless she's especially sensitive.
IAmMadeOfNope@reddit
Yes and no for the 400mg/day. That figure is factoring in that the person drinking it is an otherwise average-sized healthy adult.
Not a 17yo girl. There's a reason they'll weigh you before giving you anesthesia.
nnuunn@reddit
That doesn't make any sense, a 17 year old girl is more or less fully grown and she's probably healthier than the average adult.
philmarcracken@reddit
The reason is called low therapeutic index of anesthesia class drugs. Their active effective dosages are close to their LD50.

Ormusn2o@reddit
TryHardFapHarder@reddit
Energy drinks originally were advised to be only consumed at occasions where it's really needed and only a couple at most, now people drink them like if they were water or ordinary soda and complain that drinking 4 is nothing at shouldn't ail you, no wonder the underlying overweight and health issues you people have.
The thing is, we don’t know what actual Concentration of caffeine was in her bloodstream; according to literature, the >50mg/L threshold has proven consistent to determine poisoning, but it is not until >80 that it reaches a Fatal amount.
What happened then? She could’ve: - died of something else entirely - had an underlying medical Condition exacerbated by the caffeine - was extremely unlucky and did die with a small amount of caffeine ( even considering she must’ve developed some degree of tolerance, given the daily intake)

Id assume your toleration would grow consuming that much caffeine daily. Also a really great advertising campaign for energydrinks, "Makes your heart explode!".
SteelCandles@reddit
Tolerance is a poor indicator of the toll a drug can take on your body physiologically. How you’re feeling is not related to what it’s actually doing to you.

anonymouswan1@reddit
She probably wasn't eating a healthy diet at all if she was drinking that many energy drinks. Caffeine can suppress hunger. That much caffeine is tolerable if you're eating a healthy balanced diet around it. If you're only consuming shitty zero sugar energy drinks all day you're fixing to be in bad shape.
Demorant@reddit
The company is being sued for inadequate warnings on their beverages. The teen had an enlarged heart which was presumed to be caused by caffeine intake. The beverages that were consumed have 200mg of caffeine, which is twice the recommended maximum amount for a teenager.
