What small purchase would improve your life, but you keep putting it off?
Posted by banwe11@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 112 comments
My ironing board needs a new cover, it's totally worn out and I may as well be ironing on the metal frame. Each time I use it, I tell myself I must buy a new cover.
However whenever I think to actually look for a new cover, I can't be bothered get the board out and measure it to work out what size I need, or to choose between the various options available. Plus it is a really boring purchase that I have zero motivation to make except for when I am ironing. So I am just living my life with a crappy ironing board that annoys me each Sunday evening.

Dust buster, I have a carpet and a cat and I have a chronic pain condition and a hip deformity so getting the hoover out daily is too difficult, so I spot sweep my carpet a few times a day with a a dustpan and brush. Do t know why I don’t just buy a dust buster but also I am managing without it.
WanderWomble@reddit
I got a basic Eufy for £100 from Amazon and it's genuinely the best thing I've bought this year. I've got it scheduled to run twice a day which has kept the tracked cat litter and hair down to an absolute minimum. Genuinely made my life so much easier
.
N7twitch@reddit
I also strongly recommend a robot helper. I have three indoor cats so litter dust and hair is a constant. I paid the extra for a fancy one with a built in mop too - and not one that just drags a wet sponge around, oh no, this one has rotating mop feet that actually scrub the floor - every five minutes she takes herself home to wash her shoes, then comes back out and picks up exactly where she left off.
It’s honestly changed my life, done absolute wonders for the state of my home and had a positive effect on my mental health as a result too.
ihatepickingnames810@reddit
What brand is it please? I’ve got a Labrador and baby on the way so been thinking of getting one
N7twitch@reddit
Mine is the Lefant M3.
Kindly_Reference_267@reddit
This. I’ve got the eufy c20 it’s brilliant. Not the cheapest but not super expensive either. Brilliant little thing.
-myeyeshaveseenyou-@reddit
Thank you, also love the eyes
WanderWomble@reddit
Thank you!
FrogMaid@reddit
Can I recommend a Gtech? Like the old fashioned carpet sweepers but electric, great for a quick daily clean and not heavy at all.
-myeyeshaveseenyou-@reddit
Thank you will have a look, I’ve just swept the damn carpet for like the third time today. It’s a dark carpet that shows every spec, and I am a bit ocd about it as well which doesn’t help.

rememberthisporfa@reddit
a vacuum cleaner and an air fryer It's so difficult to choose the right one 😭
MuddyHiPo@reddit
Yes. So much choice. I put off buying a new vacuum for years. I do love my shark now i have one though. I use it and within minutes you see a thin layer build up again - i have a German Shepherd and I'm amazed she has any fun left. The suction is great and it works on carpet and hard floor.
GeggingIn@reddit
All my pegs are fucked.
ScientistJo@reddit
Where can you buy decent pegs? I've bought about 5 different sets and they are all shit!
Icy_Gap_9067@reddit
I have minky sure grip and they seem really good but I haven't had them long enough to judge if they go brittle and fall apart.
Geopooed@reddit
Had ours about 8 years and still going strong. Would highly recommend these
DoduOW@reddit
Came here to second Minky, I was recommended them by my mother so I guess should would third them?
OkCaterpillar8941@reddit
I've had mine for 2 years and they're really good still. They still look like new.
Callis_tow@reddit
Lakeland pegs are good
SuzLouA@reddit
I can’t upvote this enough. I was moved to write an online review of these pegs, that’s how brilliant they are - they are “made me give up ten minutes of my life to extol the virtues of pegs” good.
Jenny-Wren54@reddit
Oooh, I might have a look at those. I deserve a treat.
_gothick@reddit
Yup. I have their pegs and the little sock hanger they do with many pegs dangling from it. Great stuff. HASHTAG MIDDLEAGED
Callis_tow@reddit
I have the sock peg thing too!
hashbrowneggyolk0520@reddit
We got one recently and it's a game changer for drying things on the line
knitter78@reddit
Pay the pennies, ok pounds, and get minky I leave mine on the line most of the time so they get constant uv exposure.
I found 3 packs on clearance 3 years ago to replace lost and broken pegs. I eventually used them last year when a child moved out and took my pegs.
They hold everything from silk to denim and held my clothes safe when a storm broke overnight and I had snuck off to bed with a migraine forgetting my laundry.
plain-jayne@reddit
Lakeland! Not had a single one break. Their sick trees are just as good!
External-Piccolo-626@reddit
Get the push on ones.
69AssociatedDetail25@reddit
Just googled and stainless steel ones exist apparently! Haven't tried them but I imagine they'd be an improvement.
suzienewshoes@reddit
I live in Wellington NZ, one of the windiest cities in the world, and have changed to only using stainless steel pegs. They're brilliant, don't rust if you forget to bring them in, and are really strong - they've kept everything where it's supposed to be even in very strong wind.
Fireynay@reddit
I use stainless steel ones and they're great. I've had them for years now. Helps that they're all identical too, so soothes my stress about each garment having matching pegs.
Sharks_and_Bones@reddit
I'm the opposite. Every peg has to be a different colour to the ones next to it. Can't have 2 green or 2 blue together.
kkbell1@reddit
I couldn’t cope, they have to match! 😄
Kind-Blackberry-6221@reddit
You make me twitchy.
EnglandEgypt2024@reddit
I've used stainless steel pegs for about ten years, leave out all year, not rusty yet xxx
Scratchy-cat@reddit
I really like the minky pegs but I've also found the clear ones with white, green and blue tops from Tesco pretty good
Under_Pressure_123@reddit
Get Lakeland pegs!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0FC6RF83Z?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
Are good! I've been using them for a few weeks now with no problems ☺️
GeggingIn@reddit
It is tricky.
I like the ones from B and M where the plastic breaks and the metal spring flys into the face.
External-Praline-451@reddit
Every time I hang my washing up, I lose another one in the same way. I'm so over it, but honestly, it hadn't occured to me to get new ones.
GraphicDesignerSam@reddit
We resorted to the old fashioned wooden ones
CactusCastrator@reddit
Me too, it adds a little excitement to laundry.
ScientistJo@reddit
Lidl do the same, if you want to repeat that experience.
OkTadpole2920@reddit
I am so over dastardly pegs snapping in my fingers that I am actually thinking about buying wooden dolly pegs. I never leave them out but the garden is south-facing.
thorn312@reddit
I think the trick is to not leave them out on the line. Plastic gets brittle and wooden ones can get moldy and gross. Also bugs live inside the handles of plastic ones, though that doesn't bother me. Outside is their space after all.
ScientistJo@reddit
I don't leave them on the line, but I had some good ones from Tesco (years ago, they don't sell good ones now) and they got ruined from being in the sun because I left the basket on the windowsill. Gutted. I've not found any as good since.
thorn312@reddit
Yeah, sun and plastic don't play nicely together. I'll be honest, I always forget to take my pegs in and end up just having to replace them.
Cunthbert@reddit
Same, actually no, my whole whirligig is knackered I just remembered
smartfellerayi@reddit
I invested in a really good steamer because I hate ironing. Heh.

BeatificBanana@reddit
Except don't buy one, adopt one
wendelfong@reddit
OP could have ordered the ironing board cover in the time it took to post on Reddit
BeatificBanana@reddit
But they'd have had to get up from whatever cosy horizontal position they were scrolling Reddit from, go and get the ironing board out and measure it to see what size it was, then go online and find where to buy one from and choose from all the different options.. Yep I totally relate to just not wanting to bother lol.
FlippedHope@reddit
Can't you just put a towel over it?
lilidragonfly@reddit
I'm in want of a butter dish. If its in the fridge its too hard, but if it's out on the counter I find little cat nibbles in it, there's no good home for it unless a purchase a new one but yet I tarry.
Mysterious_County154@reddit
"portable" aircon unit.
I massively struggle in the heat and i really want one but i keep putting it off for some reason. Summer is fast approcahing, I think this year will finally be the year I buy. They aren't as expensive as I thought

Fixing my bathroom light. Need to swap it so need electrician so been using a torch for 2 years now.
Organic_Reporter@reddit
In my bathroom I have two stick on, rechargeable, motion sensitive LED lights. Bought so we don't need to put the big light on at night and trigger the extractor fan which makes a racket.
They're amazing. Plenty of light to see what you're doing and the charge lasts months.

Toaster. Mine is still working, just, so I spend my money on other stuff instead.
LurkingWithStyle@reddit
A new lawn mower, not an expensive one like a £50 cheap job for my tiny new build garden.
My old one is on its absolute dying legs, every time I get it out I think "this is it". The mowing itself takes twice as long, it cant cope with being remotely full of cuttings and the blades just give up then you have to lean it back to get the blades spinning before you can start again. By some miracle it actually manages the garden each time, and each time I think "right, next time I'm getting a new one".
I think this cycle has been going on for 3 years now.
annoyingpanda9704@reddit
I really need to buy a lawnmower. Ive been making do with a strimmer for far too long
donalmacc@reddit
Awh man. I got one from Lidl with a battery a few weeks ago. 100% worth it

A new phone case. It's one of those wallet ones and its so worn the little magnetic closing is hanging on by a few threads... but as long as it keeps closing, it's still ok I guess? Looks rough as hell though and bugs me, but not enough yet to replace it
lewisw1992@reddit
Same here, my wife has been convincing me to buy a new one for years now and I refuse. It's still serving its purpose.

a fly screen for my balcony door. with warmer weather coming up, i like to have my door open - i’ve been putting it off since last year lol but i finally got up a few hours ago actually and measured the frame etc to get an appropriate size.
Suspicious__Lurker@reddit
I bought this one & it’s been absolutely excellent. I roll the sides up & peg them when it’s not in use!
https://amzn.eu/d/0dcMWF4U
pip_goes_pop@reddit
You won’t regret it. Is it one of the ones with the magnetic opening in the middle? That’s what we got and it’s a game changer in the summer when you’re leaving doors open. I would get so stressed with the flies going for the cat food and laying eggs on it. Tried all sorts of fly deterrents but the screen was the only thing that worked.
Ok-Diamond1749@reddit
Where did you get your from? I need to order some too but the ones on Amazon have mixed reviews
pip_goes_pop@reddit
Mine was an Amazon one:
MYCARBON Fly Screen Door https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08LKDF7C3
FuzzyPalpitation-16@reddit
yeah i purchased that one exactly! i live in a flat with my living room connecting to the balcony and the kitchen connected to my living area so i spend a lot of time in this area (where i also have my PC/wfh set up) and i absolutely HATE seeing even one fly buzzing around. i always end up aggressively chasing and batting them with a towel. my neighbours probably think im crazy lol
pip_goes_pop@reddit
Haha my wife said I turned into a psycho with my electric fly swat so she was happier too!

At the risk of quoting Trigger, a broom.
The head keeps falling off mid sweep, so I wrap some tape round, and wedge it back in. I've now upgraded (?) To screwing it in to keep it in place.
Should probably just get a new broom...

Doesn't sound like you need a whole new broom - just a new head and handle.

You need a broom support stay, It's a small metal bracket. They cost about £1.
If your broom head is still good, get one of these. If the broom head is shot, just get a new broom... And also a broom support stay, because if your broom doesn't have one, it should.

herwiththepurplehair@reddit
We have a local charity furniture store and they’ve got a pot full of walking sticks. Grey NHS ones, floral ones, patterned ones, all for a fiver. My mum had a floral one and said it was the best thing she’d ever bought because she could hail the bus and also people got the f*** out of her way 😂😂😂

A tin opener I’ve been using a broken one and piercing the lid 100 times for about two years 😂
destria@reddit
A dustpan and brush. The handle keeps falling off the brush. It's so annoying. But it's just a small purchase, I only infrequently need the dustpan and just forget to buy a new one.
MutinousMango@reddit
A very lazy one, but a WiFi bulb for my bedroom. Wanted one for over a year and finally bought one at the beginning of the month. Not having to get out of bed to turn the light on or off has been great, especially with a cosleeping baby.

A decent pepper mill. I've been using pre-ground supermarket pepper on everything I cook for about three years, which is bordering on a personal failing. £12 on Amazon, would notice the difference on every meal, and yet I only ever remember while mid-stir with hands covered in garlic.

Yesterday I made this purchase. Bought two pairs of glasses that I'd been putting off because I didn't really like mine. Bought two so I can vary it up.

I've spent about the last 3 years thinking that I needed to get a spare pair of glasses to leave in the office. Late last year I finally got around to it after I tore a contact lens and had to go home early... Took all of half an hour, and most of that time was trying to remember where I'd put my prescription so I could get the right ones...

A few years ago the button that controlled my cruise control and speed limiter stopped responding. During an MOT/Service we asked them to identify the cause and our mechanic essentially said it was something to do with the steering wheel column and I needed to take it to the Nissan garage and they'd be able to fix it.
I just haven't, I didn't need it before and don't need it now. But every so often I think oh must get that sorted, won't that be nice to have working again.

A gaming steering wheel. None of my family are licenced to drive at all and I'm not silly enough to risk my DBS and future insurance quotes by cheekily driving without my instructor. I am already used to manual so I have no problems even with a cheaper "automatic" gaming steering wheel and pedals.
I am broke so I don't take much lessons so this would help me with my steering, braking and overall driving as I've already subconsciously accepted when to shift, the clutch, bite point etc.
Redgrapefruitrage@reddit
Our grater broke several years ago. We’ve been using the broken grater bit for ages now, until today when I finally got round to buying a new one. We’ve no idea why it’s taken so long to replace it - I think the minor inconvenience probably.
