I never thought....

I never thought as a kid that my greatest fear as a 52 year old man would be a sneeze. I feel like I've been hit by a truck sometimes after a sneeze. Especially the unexpected ones. Anyone else, or just me...?
ItsLikeARewardAZ@reddit
Ha! I think I tore my rotator cuff on a sneeze yesterday! It’s not getting easier…
Jazzlike_Standard416@reddit
A couple of weeks ago, one of the local DJs here was interviewing Robbie Williams and they were empathising about "old man injuries". Robbie was like, "Oh yeah, I've hurt my back getting out of bed. No, wait....wait......I hurt my back turning around !". I chuckled and thought "Glad I'm not at that stage yet". Yesterday, I was about to have a shower. I straightened up, and my back seized. I'm 52 😀.

Happened to me a few weeks ago drying my coffee mug inside the car on the console. I stretched, took Advil and drank a lot of water. It subsided.
idrathern0tsay@reddit
Injured my back at 33, now if I move my eyes too quick to the left or right I throw my back out for a couple days.

I feel you!

I'll be 53 at the end of June.
I consider myself fortunate to not have back issues yet.
Wednesday of last week, I climbed to the top of this suspension bridge on the catwalk, 285 feet above the water.
Salty-Gas-1172@reddit
I'm not sure what you think that has to do with sneezing.
RickRI401@reddit
My point was that I am fortunate enough that I don't have to worry about that...yet.
Ralgol@reddit
Cool story
SignificantTransient@reddit
Train yourself to breathe out before a sneeze.
You'll thank me later.
Zealousideal_Draw_94@reddit
I sneezed once when was around 32, threw my back out, and could barely move for a week.
I braced myself before a sneeze.
Global_Friend5300@reddit
55f here. Often when I sneeze, my nipples hurt like someone pinched them hard, and not in a sexy way. I’ll sneeze then shout, “Oh, my tits!” My bff laughs her ass off at me.
IMTrick@reddit
I fear them, but probably for a totally different reason. In my case, I'll be 60 in a couple months, so my body is really starting to do weird shit. One of those things includes random nosebleeds every few weeks or so (which, after a few doctor visits, no longer go for hours like they used to, which is cool because there was a scary amount of blood loss involved).
Anyway, TMI, but among other things, sneezing was one of the things that'd bring them on. So, yeah, I fear sneezes since I seem to have hit an age where they are potentially fatal.
ElJefe0218@reddit
It's like a shotgun blast, a kick in the ass
chipinserted@reddit
So paranoid watch your back
kobuta99@reddit
I realize that I sneeze just like my dad, even the same sound. He used to scare us by how loud he sneezed. 😖
dafuqizzis@reddit
I have a recurring lumbar issue. Sneezes and coughs Give me amazing amounts of anxiety these days.
2PlasticLobsters@reddit
A sneeze or fit of coughing can set off my afib.
Automatic-Unit-8307@reddit
When I had a bad back, sneezing was like a truck just ran over me. Sometimes i would not be able to get up for 5 minutes
TakitishHoser@reddit
Yep, I brace myself when I sneeze cause I can blow out my back.
DtchGrl@reddit
Same.
JessieColt@reddit
The joys of getting old.
Trying to roll over in bed, and you pull a back muscle.
Sneeze and it feels like you cracked a rib.
My body, for some reason, has now decided that coughing fits should sometimes end in a half sneeze.
Tried to swallow something, ended up coughing like crazy, and then this bizarre half cough half sneeze right at the end. Coughing not working fast enough, lets try throwing in a sneeze at the end to see if that helps!
Bellabbey1236@reddit
Snoughing! I hate snoughing.
Purist1975@reddit
I like em like mini climaxes for me.
Purist1975@reddit
Dad's sneezing fits were epic.. ten in a row sometimes.
Apawling_Behavior@reddit
Back in 2018 one saturday morning in my kitchen I sneezed, popped a disk, couldn’t stand up any more. Was like the finger of God poked right through me. Eventually had to have surgery for it. I’m no fan of sneezes.
CommissionFeisty9843@reddit
I fixed a crick in my back with a giant bong hit.
fattfreddy1@reddit
I tweaked my lower spine when I was doing yard work last week. Now every cough and sneeze is like playing Russian roulette.
Badrear@reddit
I never would’ve guessed that sneezing could hurt my lower back.
Old-Somewhere-6084@reddit
I hurt my shoulder when I was 61. Sneezing hasn’t been the same since then, and I sometimes do my best to avoid having one.
Vegaprime@reddit
Try scream sneezing instead. Its louder but easier on the back.
Enlightenment72@reddit
1972 here.
For the entire time I was around my mother, when she sneezed, it was not a simple "achoo" sound, but a searingly loud "AH-HACIA!" scream.
As a small boy, I figured I was doing it wrong when I sneezed through my nose, so I tried to imitate her and nearly guillotined my tongue when my mouth instinctively slammed shut!
Never attempted it again. I still can't see how she did it!
Vegaprime@reddit
When I do it, its up to 15 times sometimes as well. If I get half that many in, my whole workplace starts barking with me as well. It can be embarrassing but before I learned to do it I would pull the taint muscle sometimes and that would drop me immediately. Someone compared it to what airforce pilots do to keep blood in the brain. Maybe start there.
Enlightenment72@reddit
Maybe start there?
I don't know what you mean. I can't do it and don't want to. It's too dangerous for me to sneeze like that since I almost bit my tongue off. I was just saying that my mother used to sneeze like that and it was an oddity my siblings and I wondered about.
Vegaprime@reddit
My mistake. Apparently you can't handle it. Bok bok!
dope_mantra@reddit
I have multiple herniated discs in both cervical and lumbar regions. I also have a mild prolapse and sneezing can end up being hours in bed.
NixKTM@reddit
Me too, four pro lapsed discs, an unexpected sneeze can floor me for a month
dope_mantra@reddit
Prolapse in the pelvic region. Should have clarified.
FlippingPossum@reddit
I've pushed out two kids. Sneezing requires me pausing and clenching muscles. God help me if I have to sneeze on my way to the bathroom.
Honeybee71@reddit
As a woman, sometimes we pee a little lol
xpunkrockmomx@reddit
This.
kat2211@reddit
I'm 59 and have learned through hard experience to brace myself before either a sneeze or a cough. You kind of learn to channel the force internally rather than let it blow out in all directions.
Enlightenment72@reddit
I was born with asthma. I used to sneeze a lot but I guess Claritin has helped me more than I realized. It's laughing that makes me wonder.
I have what I call "Stroke laughs". One day, in my late 30s early 40s, I heard, "Adam Chandler, shut the F-" it ended with "front door", which is an expression I hadn't heard before, so I thought the woman was saying STFU in network television!
The thought struck me so funny that I flipped over laughing, which turned into braying! My eyes crossed, the room spun, and I couldn't hear or move for a while.
As I started to recover I couldn't remember what happened for a few seconds. It was so strange! I talked to my then PCP at the time and she said something about the brain being temporarily oxygen-deprived.
Once, my eyes rolled back in my head, and I tipped over in a chair and blacked out for a few seconds while talking to my therapist.
It's scary but also kinda fun. 🫤
reasonable_lunatic73@reddit (OP)
When I feel a sneeze coming on now, I lean forward slightly, put both hands on my knees, tighten my core, and brace myself. Luckily, I only have to deal with the jarring pain issue, I haven't shit myself. Yet.
tzweezle@reddit
I once needed surgery after a snee2
Left-Thinker-5512@reddit
How about bending over to pick up something you dropped on the ground?
NerdfestZyx@reddit
I sneeze all the time because of allergies I didn’t have 10 years ago. At least 2 dozen times a day.
I am now the old man who blows his nose with a cloth handkerchief, and shoves that same handkerchief back into his pocket.
Mediocre-Team1715@reddit
I laughed out loud. I leaned down to zipper my backpack and tweaked my back. “What did you do?” “Move?”
mommy2libras@reddit
I've had 2 kids so sometimes when I sneeze, I pee a bit. It really sucks. You don't get to plan or prepare for that, just carry extra clothes in the car & hope for the best. Especially at this time of year where I'm sneezing like 5-10 times a day due to seasonal allergies.
VixxSynn@reddit
We have special pads for that…trust me, they’re FABULOUS.
umeboshiplumpaste@reddit
I've had this phenomenon since I was little re: debilitating seasonal allergies. I used to have to spend a chunk of the summer in our basement in the A/C to prevent the outdoor attacks. I have learned to bend my knees when I feel all 475 sneezes coming on, to prepare for the jolt through my body. And I try to hold onto a stationary object. A wall. A chair. It's now serious business preventing a thrown-out back. I don't mind peeing my pants a little. That's just annoying. But a thrown-out back is no fun.
la_winky@reddit
I missed most of every August of my childhood because I was asleep from antihistamines.
I’m still pissed my parents planned every family vacation for August. We camped. I spent many sweltering days passed out in the pop up camper.
umeboshiplumpaste@reddit
Oh, do I get it! Same-ish for me, but my misery always starts in spring and goes through late June. Every year, just in time for Mother's Day, I'd be freakin' miserable, puffy face, nose dripping like a hose, barely able to open my eyes from sneezing and tears just pouring out of them. And yet, the family would always get some outdoor patio restaurant for Mother's Day. And I wasn't allowed to opt out. My life in the basement was my only relief. Laying down there on a couch with a cold washcloth on my eyes for hours. I had years of my life going to the allergiest for shots in each arm. Never did anything for me.
As an adult, Zyrtec has been as miraculous as it gets. It doesn't cure me, but it's made a serious difference.
NixKTM@reddit
I fear sneezes as i have sciatica and a sudden unexpected sneeze can cause one of my knackered discs to move and bring on a sciatic episode.
VixxSynn@reddit
It’s a valid fear. Some shit can happen when you sneeze.
jrsixx@reddit
Literally
VixxSynn@reddit
I knew someone who sneezed, dislodged and undiagnosed brain aneurysm, and dropped dead on his front porch, 35 years old. This was back in the 90’s…and that incident still sticks with me.
jrsixx@reddit
Holy hell! Her I was just making a poop joke.
DepartmentNatural@reddit
You should know one of the old people rules is never trust a fart too
HappyHolidayHomo@reddit
Sneeze, fart, sneaky leak, then my back is out. Its called old age multi skilling..
Fee_is_Required2@reddit
You made me lol 😂
Right_Sentence8488@reddit
As a woman, I have to make sure my legs are crossed right when I sneeze. Childbirth effects linger.
Fee_is_Required2@reddit
Yep. This. This is awful.
I’d seriously rather snot flew out of my nose.
One_Love_Mama@reddit
I got a small rebounder (firm mini trampoline). I bounce on it 10 minutes a day and no longer have this problem. Highly recommend. It does take time, but worth it.
lucid_intent@reddit
Yep, we pee. You can also suffer a uterine prolapse from too much coughing. I finally have penis envy. lol
Gudakesa@reddit
I sneezed while walking up my driveway last spring. I have my second spinal fusion and 4th overall back surgery in May.
RandyBeaman@reddit
I used to work for a spine surgeon. He said sneezing is one of the biggest causes of ruptured discs.
Fee_is_Required2@reddit
Really?! TIL!
TemperReformanda@reddit
Just last night I nearly painted the bathroom with mouthwash. Got a big swig and suddenly a huge emergency sneeze hit.
I ended up sneezing into the sink just in time lol
Much-Injury1499@reddit
I was walking down the hallway in my school and was hit by an unexpected sneeze. It threw my lower back out and I had to stand there, leaning against the lockers with tears streaming down my face. Worst pain ever. I feel you, bro.
LumpyheadCarini2001@reddit
I pulled my back out and basically couldn't get out of bed for 5 days from sneezing
Worth-Silver-484@reddit
54 and did that while yawning while stretching in my old man lazy boy recliner. It was allergy season and every sneeze sent stabbing nerve pain through my lower back for a week.
jouleheist@reddit
My husband has degenerative disc disease. He sneezed sometimes and is almost paralyzed from pain for a few minutes. One of our cats runs to him to see if he's okay.
