Core memories of GenXers.
HURTBOTPEGASUS9@reddit
When ever I think of one I think of the other. Both used the same style of animation.
Hawke-Paladin@reddit
I remembered!
snausagemclinx@reddit
*gallon a milk
Temporary-Block-9452@reddit
Every single time I go to the grocery store.
rpcyclone1995@reddit
Also a Coke and a pack of Kool cigarettes.
Mysterions@reddit
All time classic.
Komaisnotsalty@reddit
I'm Canadian. I remember being so confused by the stick of butter. I'd never heard of it and didn't understand what she was saying
You can buy a pound of butter cut in to sticks now, but back then, they were unheard of, at least where I lived. Very expensive to buy. For that price, I'll cut my own!
Dramatic_Side_856@reddit
I remember this! Also the kid making a fruit salad.https://youtu.be/nVP0Z8ioP2Q?si=DQRUoI2ElfDWjBfr
Upstairs_End_4202@reddit
Nope, “loafuh bread, gallon of milk, sticka buttah.” 😁🤣
Upstairs_End_4202@reddit
Nope, “loafuh bread, gallon of milk, sticka buttah.” 😁
I stand corrected. I’m sorry. It IS “container”!
Happy_Lake_11@reddit
Oh yeah, a gallon of milk. And Big Gold Top bread. I always wanted Wonder bread like all the other kids. Stupid Big Gold Top with no prize at the bottom of the bag. I really felt like I made it in young adulthood when I bought myself a whole loaf of Wonder Bread, though they no longer came with prizes
Outrageous_Plum5348@reddit
No. Home Pride Butter Top and you light into that little strip of butter (which I guarantee was not butter but a merger with Imperial Margarine.)
missusfictitious@reddit
I JUST showed this video to my kids last week 🤣
onewomancaravan@reddit
I think about this all the time as a parent. I can't imagine sending my 6 year old to the store like that. Times have changed so much. (I had my kid in my mid-40s so yes I'm still GenX.)
Both-Basis-3723@reddit
I’m not saying that the reason we moved out of the country but sending our ten year this weekend for a loaf a bread, bananas and some pasta. We only got two plus some chips. I had forgotten that clip. Funny.
mEp1973@reddit
My husband said this yesterday 🤣
ContrastsOfForm@reddit
We say this regularly!!! Stickabuddah!!!!
StillC5sdad@reddit
My mom added " pack of Virginia Slims"
Automatic-Unit-8307@reddit
My dad added a 6 pack and latest issue of Penthouse…and they would sell to an 8 years old, as long as you say it was for dad
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
TIL. They sold me smokes, I should've tried the same thing for primitive second millennium porn.
Automatic-Unit-8307@reddit
We tried porn rental and it worked. A bunch of us 12 years old went to a video store and said dad was ill and wanted us to rent a movie. He actually rented to us, we were all shocked while watching 1980s Amber Lynn and the Hedgehog, Ron Jeremy.
Kids gave it so easy today, back in our days, we had to lie and steal our ways to porn
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
Or comb the woods...
dreadful_cookies@reddit
Right? Why so many porno mags out in the woods? Dunno, but they were out there, in stacks, getting rain damaged. I don't think I've ever thought about it, weird.
Happy_Lake_11@reddit
I was well known at the grocery store and drugstore, but do remember having a note for the liquor store once for Glenlivet
Individual-Trick3310@reddit
Like an 8 year old buying Glenlivet?
Honestly I'd let the transaction go through even now. If he's got the money and the taste and there's no way local PD would use an 8 year old in a sting.
Sláinte, kid.
StillC5sdad@reddit
I had to bring a note, kind of like Juan Epstein
Ignignokt73@reddit
She was alive with pleasure! 🤣 (maybe that slogan is for Newports). But definitely in flavor country.
Happy_Lake_11@reddit
Mine too, and it was a loafa bread and bring back the change
SimpleServe9774@reddit
Yup
Poison_Ivy_Rorschach@reddit
I have a tshirt that says this and I love when someone sees in and is like “heeeeyyy”. Instant fist bump.
LeTigre71@reddit
I remembered!
EbbRevolutionary7475@reddit
Underrated comment
AlternativeSpinach84@reddit
Oh I can HEAR THAT right now!!!
PhotoJim99@reddit
I made butter from stickers once. It tasted awful.
Mammoth_Cheek6078@reddit
I love this so much and say it pretty often!
JesMon421@reddit
Sesame Street - Milk Song
Cancer_Heiress@reddit
Yes, but do you remember, “It’s the plumber, he’s come to fix the sink”?
stunneddisbelief@reddit
That was an Electric Company one, wasn’t it?
“HEY YOU GUYSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!”
Cancer_Heiress@reddit
I thought Sesame Street, but I’m not sure. Those days are blurry.
Former_Boysenberry45@reddit
That and the Bert and Ernie "I can't hear you, I have a banana in my ear" established my sense of humor early on lol
cuzwhat@reddit
Bread / milk / butter girl is about as common as Ernie’s chocolate pudding is in my household.
“I used it to write this note, Bert!”
FrostedMoon8888@reddit
That one lives rent free in my head “awwwwk who is it “ “it’s da Plummer I come to fix the leaky faucet!”… the stupid shit that stayed In my head I swear.
DaddyOhMy@reddit
My mom & I still use that line whenever the opportunity arises. I've even gotten my kids to use it after showing them the bit on YouTube.
keystone52@reddit
My five siblings and I are all in our '50s now, And we still bring this one up.
IMTrick@reddit
Should this mean something to me? For a "core memory" it's not ringing any bells.
Javatex@reddit
I only know this because it was referenced on family guy
punkdrummer22@reddit
Yeah no clue what this is
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
Sesame Street skit
stunneddisbelief@reddit
It’s a Sesame Street short.
SocialSyphilis@reddit
The grocery list you had to walk up to the store for when you were 8
Silver_Daikon6974@reddit
Forgot a pack of McDonald’s menthols
youngkpepper@reddit
We are out of sweet rolls!
StraightChemGuy1@reddit
Ok, then I’ll have a small coffee and a sweet roll.

jets_or_chasm@reddit
I am Elmer J. Fudd, milwonaire. I own a mansion and a yacht.
DisenchantedIdealist@reddit
Years ago I saw a cartoon of a man lying on a psychiatrist's couch saying, "I don't understand Doc. Every time I go to the store I have to buy a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter." The caption underneath read, "Subliminal Sesame Street."
KarenCT@reddit
Omg. Brilliant.
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
That’s a classic
ZippyNomad@reddit
My wife and I make this statement to each other regularly
WaltFlanagansDog77@reddit
If I send my husband to the store for a few things and he almost always says this as he heads out the door.
RubberRuss@reddit
This is done at my house too
WaltFlanagansDog77@reddit
Usually that's my cue to text the list to him, because he's going to forgot something otherwise.
DeepRoot@reddit
A new vat of Crisco, the one on the bottom shelf.
Ok_Entrepreneur_8509@reddit
I walk to the grocery store 95% of the time, and I can't help but repeat this while I walk. Regardless of what I actually need.
walter_grimsley@reddit
I cut cable and most tv ages ago, but made damn sure my Gen Alpha daughter saw this, plus the Yip-Yips encountering a phone, pinball counting to 12, the crayon manufacturers, am I missing any other must-see bits?!

Those are just three that immediately come to mind. I could do this all day lol
flagrantstickfoul@reddit
does anyone else remember it as a "quart" of milk, or did my brain just morph the list over the decades?
0_IceQueen_0@reddit
Morph 😁
flagrantstickfoul@reddit
i seem to be using the phrase "curse this aging brain" more and more these days
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
Loaf of bread container of milk stick of butter
dadofsummer@reddit
She pronounced it ptainer, if I remember correctly, this randomly pops into my head every couple of months.
no-thanks-thot@reddit
I thought it was potato
Dramatic_Channel52@reddit
I have a tshirt with this and when I wear it it’s for sure a way to identify the fellow GenXers.
Funny (to me) story - I wore this shirt to my kids basketball game. One of our neighbors is a solid 10 years younger than us. The wife says “nice shirt” and the husband looks at it too and didn’t say anything.
I followed up and said “You do get it, right?” And the wife looked at me a bit funny … I looked at the husband and got an equally confused look.
I said … “it’s a Sesame Street skit … a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter”
Went right over their heads
It’s fine. Again, it’s almost like a way to ID the GenXers.
I get similar nods when I wear my Reading Rainbow shirt.
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
Reading rainbow was another classic. PBS
slasherbobasher@reddit
I don’t remember this at all. Wah.
Outrageous_Drag6613@reddit
Sesame Street
Francis_Lynch@reddit
A fire engine!
Francis_Lynch@reddit
I just experienced a Mandela effect. I mixed up the little black girl with the white boy who's mom sent him for a loaf of bread. His train of thought would be derailed by a new dog, a baseball game, then a firetruck. To further my misremembering, I've been saying Fire engine! For the past 47 years.
MrsPottyMouth@reddit
Omg I keep trying to find the little boy version and it's like it never existed. I just keep getting the Family Guy version.
Francis_Lynch@reddit

MrsPottyMouth@reddit
Omg thank you!!
jtrades69@reddit
and now we might get in trouble if the kids go to the park 3 blocks away on their own!!
Francis_Lynch@reddit
I remember when I was about 5 and my older sister was 8, we we're sent to get baby aspirin for my little sister. We walked about 10 blocks in freezing late December weather because we didn't see the 7/11 a block and a half to other direction. My mom was freaking out, but only because it took us 3 times as long as it should have. I'm sure we got scolded for her mistake and shoved right back outside.

Tim-no@reddit
Of course I remember this! But wasn’t it originally “a quart of milk” as opposed to “a container of milk”? 🥛
UrsaMajor7th@reddit
"A loaf of bread, container of milk, and a stick of butter"
AriadneThread@reddit
Awwwww🩷
SomePeopleCallMeJJ@reddit
I would totally buy that final image (starting at 1:08) on a t-shirt.
Informal-Chemical-79@reddit
Absolutely it was
Agreeable_Peak_6100@reddit
“A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter” were the words spoken.
I Can Remember
Informal-Chemical-79@reddit
Wow how my memories fail me.
Retracnic@reddit
Ha ha! Not really.
Nobody said a "container of milk" back then, so most people ended up changing "container" to a "bottle", "jug", "quart" or "carton" of milk in their mind from the start. So that's the way you remembered it.
UrsaMajor7th@reddit
If only you had access to a vast repository of knowledge; something you could hold in the palm of your hand...
Ok_Arachnid1089@reddit
No
Sufficient_Meal_7074@reddit
...and come home right away.
baloothebear92@reddit
a loaf of milk, a container of bread, and a joe dirt dvd
HoneyWyne@reddit
I still say this phrase regularly when I need to make the grocery list.
BadkyDrawnBear@reddit
I'm English, but I swear I remember this, was it a Sesame Street animation?
coldbrewedsunshine@reddit
yep!
BadkyDrawnBear@reddit
thank you
vw-thing@reddit
Chest of drawers, drapes, sofa
Francis_Lynch@reddit
Kinda proves what we've been saying about our freedom. That little kid was about 5 years old.
Independent-Dog5311@reddit
Flout tortillas too.
Useful_Humor_1152@reddit
Yes Sesame Street was filmed in NY. All of us NYs say "Sticka Butta"
Even in the B52s Rock Lobster song long version, Fred says "Pass The Tanning Butta"
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
Yeah but the B-52s were from Georgia.
Useful_Humor_1152@reddit
Fred and Kate are from New Jersey even though the band was formed in Georgia. This is why Fred says "butta"
Both-Honeydew-7801@reddit
I loved that kid
HoochShippe@reddit
It was always a quart for me.
ScreenTricky4257@reddit
See, and I thought it was a carton.
0_IceQueen_0@reddit
Mommy I remember!
exhaustedbut@reddit
I thought of this the other day when I red a reddit post by a millennial complaining about being regularly sent to the store as a 14 year old.
CrashX@reddit
I quote this to my kids every time they say stick of butter.
pokeynabber@reddit
This one and the Milk Song are probably the two things I remember best.
funktopus@reddit
What's weird for me is I won't remember it until someone says it then I can hear her voice as she walked.
I never recall the music.
BuckyGoldman@reddit
I just read the title as I was doomscrolling along. Read it out loud in my head. It made zero sense to me. Why would any of those items be a Gen X thing.
I Swear I was 5 posts down and I said it again in my head and then repeated it... and then everything clicked. Loaf of Bread. Container of Milk. Sticka Butta. I remembered! I remembered!
lastfreerangekid@reddit
Thats so great. Now let's work on the difference between reading out loud and reading in your head.
FreeKick17@reddit
This was my introduction to the New York accent. I still say "sticka butta" when I'm getting out ingredients for baking.
Few_Control7451@reddit
I remembered I remembered!!
KatJen76@reddit
I can remember.
NOGOODGASHOLE@reddit
I used this as a memory device. Wife said I was crazy. She turned 50 and I catch her doing it.
original-whiplash@reddit
My wife says this line all the time
Quasigriz_@reddit
This is also referenced on The Dan Band Live! “Grandma said, Danny, sweet Danny. Where the eff your grampa Tyrone? Where the F he at! He went out for a loaf of bread, container of milk, stick of butta, and he ain’t come back. You gonna be a piece of shit like him? And she gently laid me down of the linoleum. And I heard her say, and she moonwalked into the sunset….”
“Doooo, doooo, do-dit, do-do-dooo-dit, do dit-dooo-dit, do do doooo-dit. This one’s for you, grandma!”
Unfortunately, none of the streaming versions of Tyrone/No More Problems have the between tracks talking (unlike every rap album with their terrible skit tracks). And I no longer have my CD version.
Enlighten-Pasta@reddit
This is one of my best memories watching this fantastic show .
stunneddisbelief@reddit
“I remembered! I remembered!”
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit
"You have a good memory!"
WAstargazer@reddit
My inside voice repeats this every time I am asked, "What do we need at the store? "
genxcanuckucklehead@reddit

Yeah, my husband talks fondly of the quantities of food he used to be able to eat, and not gain a pound. A quart of milk, a pint of ice cream, half a loaf of bread, six hot dogs, half a jar of Skippy, stuff like that. Wild.
genxcanuckucklehead@reddit
You are not on the right page, this has nothing to do with eating.
AdnorAdnor@reddit
Unlocking those deep cuts ✌️
knot-afrayed-@reddit
My husband and I say this all the time! I love Sesame Street!
genxcanuckucklehead@reddit
Same. Are you my wife? 😆
