What’s the weirdest/most unexpected way you’ve injured yourself lately?

Woke up this morning thinking I’d broken my wrists while sleeping. (Which, frankly, would not even be that surprising.) Then I remembered I’d moved a huge potted plant yesterday by grasping the inside of the rim and lifting. No back pain, though, so I’m calling it a win. 🥇
How about you?
KayBear2@reddit
I thought I heard a noise outside in the middle of the night and I went to check on things. I fell down the bottom half of my stairs from the landing. I slipped (as if on a banana peel) and somehow went down in a split. The leg & foot that were under me were quite bruised & bloody (but thankfully not broken).
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
On vacation and went to Dolly Wood. Got off an old wooden roller coaster but the turns and dips were so hard it slammed me back and forth, especially my right side. Next day, I got the start of shingles in my right armpit. The hard coaster ride literally activated shingles in my body because of physical trauma. The pain was insane. Never had it before. Still feel the nerve burn to this day, it has not gone away.
tizzymyers@reddit
That’s terrible! And so strange! I’m sorry for your pain. That shingles stuff is brutal. Please take care of yourself 💙
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
Thank you! And it was so strange. I wouldn’t wish shingles on my worst enemy. The nerve pain is diabolical like the skin is on fire and it comes in waves but won’t ever go out.
Own_Psychology_5585@reddit
Shingles are something else. I had my 1st round when I was 14. Get the vaccine if you can!
qriousqestioner@reddit
COMMUNITY ALERT:
Shingles is terrible, and fifty is when you can get the vaccine.
My mom had it and I raced to get mine at fifty. Nearly five years and so far so good.
chiaratara@reddit
Oh yea! I need to get that scheduled
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
No joke! Best vaccine I ever got.
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
14? Ouch. Great advice on the vaccine, everyone should get it. It prevented round 2 for me. Hope it does the same for you.
trguiff@reddit
My son was 19 when he got shingles- and yes, he had the chicken pox vaccine! The dr said it was stress induced. My son said that it was the worst pain he had ever encountered- and to top it off, he needed to see an opthomologist because he also had them in his right eye. It was a scary time- he has since healed, and is trying to keep stress levels down!
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
That’s horrible! And his eye too?! So glad he recovered. I bet it was scary. Can’t even imagine that pain in the eyes. Hope his stress levels stay down!
trguiff@reddit
He's now 22 and will be graduating in May. He's a double major-- chemistry and physics. Can't imagine why he was stressed! LOL. He's doing so much better now. When he had them, it was his scalp and the right side of his face- he was MISERABLE. He has learned to deal with stress a bit better, but he is a Type A personality and a perfectionist, so I gently remind him that not everything has to be perfect all the time. Plus he has said he never wants to go through that again, so that helps keep him in check!
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
Wow!! Wishing him the very best. I can’t even imagine that kind of pain on the scalp and face. And congratulations to your son! That’s an amazing achievement. Hope the JPL’s of the world are scouting him.
trguiff@reddit
Thank you!! 😊
GardenBunnyBaseball@reddit
My hubs, BIL, & SIL rode Thunderhead at Dollywood not long ago. They all are adventurous & like roller coasters but were visibly (and literally!) shaken afterwards. My SIL said it was so physically jarring that it felt like being in a car accident.
Educational_Fox2212@reddit
That’s the one that triggered my shingles! Couldn’t remember the name. Thank you for mentioning it. Most painful coaster ever!
bobthenob1989@reddit
Was on steroids and went into an insane rage about nothing. Slammed the car door 3-4 times so hard I injured my shoulder and needed a cortisone shot.
roxinmyhead@reddit
My oldest was given dexamethasone after wisdom teeth removal. It's the closest I've ever come to almost calling the police on a family member. Few years later, they were given a different oral steroid for a skin rash. Whoa. That's when we realized they basically couldn't tolerate oral steroids... At. All. About a year ago, my mother had something where oral steroids would commonly be prescribed and she just told the doc (I just happened to be at her appt, longish story), oh no, I just can't tolerate them at all. It was an "a-ha!" moment for me.
bobthenob1989@reddit
Yes! That’s what happened to me - had a rash and got on dexamethasone. It fixed the rash but whoooo boy. I told my wife at least we know now.
roxinmyhead@reddit
Don't know where you're from (your use name sounds UK-ish) but eing from the US, I was never so concerned during 🍊💩's first term when it came out in the news that he was given dexamethasone as part of treatment when he contracted covid in 2020. Figured he'd go crazy or something. Oh, those were simpler times, now crazy is just every day
bobthenob1989@reddit
OMG never considered that! Maybe it made him more sane for a week.
roxinmyhead@reddit
That 🍊mofo has never been sane a day in his life. Grew up in NYC area.. he was in tabloid media forever...new business, lawsuits, marriage, lawsuits, adultery, probably more lawsuits, bankruptcy, lawsuits, another new business venture.... spin the wheel to guess what is next... despised and creeped out by him for close to 40 years now. Y'all are just catching up, lol.
bobthenob1989@reddit
I try to tell people we’ve known forever he was a total trash human being and dumb as a post. But it’s not brains that get you elected, unfortunately.
Glad-Pen5593@reddit
Whoa. I am not judging at all but it reminded me that my son-in-law was on oral steroids for an MS flare-up not long ago and his personality changed pretty drastically for a spell. Sorry about your shoulder!
bobthenob1989@reddit
When I did this I first went to physical therapy and the therapist told me she had the same reaction to steroids for a foot injury.
You hear about “‘roid rage” but never knew it could happen after a few days on them. 😬
Hope they helped your SIL.

I was putting cayenne pepper around my yard to keep stray cats out and basically maced myself.
Also, strained my back trying to turn over under my weighted blanket.
I am a disaster.
PunchDrunken@reddit
Serious, NON SNARKY question, why were the cats bothering you? I know they aren't wanted everywhere anyhow and they can really fuck up an ecosystem. What were yours?
PerceptionOk3196@reddit
I feed native birds, they kill them. Several are male cats that spray everywhere. They are not native to our ecosystem and shouldn’t be out. They use my yard as a litter box. They’ve gotten into my outdoor shed. Additionally, if I wanted a cat I’d adopt one. They also break my privacy fence. They attacked my dog, in HIS yard before he passed. Also, we will eventually get another dog, and rotties dont typically tolerate cats in their yard and I would rather train them to stay out so I don’t have to pick up a dead cat.
Sobriquet-acushla@reddit
Is there a TNR organization in your area? Trap, Neuter, Release. Animal groups do it. At least the males would be less aggressive and wouldn’t be spraying.
PerceptionOk3196@reddit
Yes, but they are horribly overwhelmed. I live outside Austin and people are always dumping cats. They adopt them as kittens and then dump them when they aren’t cute anymore. If I could figure out which one sprays I would certainly trap him. None of them gets close enough for me to see if their ears are notched.
PunchDrunken@reddit
Thank you so much for actually hearing my question. I totally get it; one of the best things in my life was taming a feral cat. There was only one, he made an amazing pet, and they've been there for at least a hundred years. Old country farm. Controlled our pest problems (everything outside is trying to get inside in the country) and didn't have to be trained to use a litter box, he just did it. Never sprayed or had accidents.
This was in a perfect world, with the perfect logistics and situation to absolutely absorb and love him as a cat. Would never have worked if he hadn't been near death when we started feeding him we literally never would have seen him. And lastly, he had a tamable and appreciative personality. My partner passed away and I had to leave him, it breaks my heart every day.
What I take away is that they would be helliants in anything other than my exact circumstances.
PerceptionOk3196@reddit
My neighbors cats are all snide most of the day, and they just cruise through my yard. I tolerate them. There are about 10 of them.
PerceptionOk3196@reddit
Sorry, that was a mess of a response- I meant *inside not snide (although if any animal is capable of snide it’s a cat😅). I also meant to say there are about 10 others that pass through besides her two.
SarahJaneB17@reddit
I maced myself a couple of days ago removing the seal on a jar of ground chipotle with my teeth.

Slept. Woke up. Couldn’t turn head to the right.
chockykoala@reddit
I was doing yardwork and got stuck by one of my rose bushes. Blood running down my arm and still hurts 2 days later.
goingloopy@reddit
I tripped over a blanket getting out of bed to go to the bathroom, and I ended up with a bruise under my big toenail. The toenail fell off (luckily by then it was closed-toe weather). It is mostly grown out, but it STILL HURTS.
If we’re counting older injuries, I sprained my ankle walking out of my bathroom (twice), cut my finger instead of my bangs, faceplanted in a parking lot (it was uneven) and I had to just sit there for a minute because I didn’t want to unleash a stream of curse words in front of my nephew (thankfully my SIL had some first aid options), banged my ribs into the counter by the copier, and slammed my neck into a car door because it was taller than my car.
It’s ok though, my GenX boss fell through the ceiling at our new office trying to run an electric line, and he once hurt his thumb trying to defrost an (outside) pipe with his wife’s hairdryer because he dropped and broke the heat gun. Those are just the obvious ones he had to confess to.
TheJQN@reddit
I was helping my niece warm up to pitch in her softball game. She had an errant pitch that hit my big toe, and broke it.

De-gloved my arm with the storm door latch. Pretty nasty looking! 3”x3” section of skin fillet off like a fish.

Me: The dog is so good for my health, gets me outside, walking, active...
So how did I get hurt?
Also me: Tripped over the dog. Twisted my ankle playing walking the dog. Sprained a shoulder throwing a ball for the dog. Hurt my hip playing soccer with the dog. Messed up a knee cos the dog ran into it. Hurt my back running with the dog.
No_Farm_3562@reddit
I work with dogs daily and am always worried about getting injured. Not really from bites but from just walking or playing with them. Lol
TeaManTom@reddit
🤣Totally worth the risk!
KimBrrr1975@reddit
I once sprained 2 of my fingers because I had them wrapped around a leash and I was climbing over a baby gate when the dog tried to pull me out the door. The one still hurts sometimes, and that happened when I was like 35, so 15 years ago.
thewriteanne@reddit
Reading this thread hurts. :)

I drew out a sidewalk chalk, fish migration obstacle course Friday which meant squatting for like 90 minutes. I've been barely able to move since. 😂
chiaratara@reddit
This sounds intriguing
cagey_quokka@reddit
We have about 60,000 alewives that migrate through the city I work for each year. This was part of our Earth Day celebration.
chiaratara@reddit
This is so cool. I hope you are feeling better after the prolonged squat. My knee is still getting over my colonoscopy :(
Defiant_Gate_6074@reddit
I took a nap and woke up with a seized-up back.

Just a note about menopause. I started waking up with stiff fingers, wrists and elbows. My Dr said that could be contributed to menopause and now I'm on HRT and it's gotten much better. So just a shout out to all genX ladies. This could be causing random aches and pains. Stupid menopause!!

Trigger thumb from crafting too hard 🙄

A tiny, tiny piece of a chip went down the wrong pipe.
Despite not being blocked in any way, my airway went into spasms so I couldn't inhale or exhale. Terrifying.
Black spotsbon the edge of my vision til I figured out I could (weirdly) breathe through my nose, though breathing through my mouth was still impossible.
Once I could inhale through my mouth, it triggered a whooping series of coughs expel the tiny crumb of chip that started it all. That coughing was full-body and so violent it felt like my chest muscles tore across my upper chest and down my arms. It hurt to move or cough or laugh for a good week after that. All from a tiny piece of a chip.
Repulsive_Impact5508@reddit
Broke two toes swinging my leg up on a chair to tie my shoe. Smh.

I sprained my knee while doing the Hokie Pokie on the field with Alumni Marching band at Lane Stadium during the halftime show

Pulled off my wedding ring before bed. Giant purple bruise? Broken blood vessel? Hurt for two days. Looked scary.
PickledBrains79@reddit
I guess I slept too hard, because my ear canal hurt when I woke up. Also elbow and wrist and knee on my right side.
AllUpInItYo@reddit
Well, it's not lately, but, as GenX, I feel this injury qualifies ...
As our generation does, I tried to "walk it off" for a few weeks. By the time I got MRIs (three weeks later), the doc said it was emergent. He admitted me on the spot, had surgery the next day.
If you have the choice, don't do what I did.

There’s a place you can send the tick to check if it has Lyme
sfdsquid@reddit
I have a friend who told me about having to remove a tick from another friend's taint.
She didn't go into detail, and I'm glad.

Doom scrolling in bed. Dropped the phone which hit me in the eye. I've been lying about how I got the shiner.
Dense-Consequence-70@reddit
Did you tell them your husband didn’t like his sandwich?
Iloveweirddogs@reddit
My son threw a frisbee for his dog. The wind caught it and the dog (border collie/heeler) was in the zone, ran full force into me, and of course I snapped my wrist. The dog was not in trouble, but we are way more cautious with frisbees.

Dropped a table on my toes. Twice. In 2 days. Once to set it up on Sunday then again on Monday when I folded it back up. I picked it up to put it away and the handle just let go. I thought for sure the police were gonna come because I screamed so loudly!
Broke 2 toes, 4 bones and 1 joint.

My spouse and I joke that we’re just one good fart away from the wheelchair since I tweaked my back lifting one cheek today let one rip.
We also half jokingly have a rule: only one of us on the stairs at a time so someone can call 911 if the other one falls. Otherwise we’ll have the headline “Elderly Couple Found Dead at Bottom of Stairs”.
We were born in 64 and 65 and she gets salty when I call her a boomer.

A week and a half ago, I was heading down a set of five stairs. Put my heel on the first step, slipped, and landed at the bottom of the stairs on top of my right leg. I looked at it and then called up to my wife to let her know I broke my leg. I broke both the tibia and fibula and just had surgery to put a rod in my leg on Tuesday.
michwife40@reddit
A couple weeks ago I was carrying laundry down to my basement to wash. I stepped (barely) on my cat laying on the stairs and fell about 3 feet off the side of the stairs onto the cement floor. I hit my tailbone somehow and it's still pretty sore! I remember thinking "Oh god, I'm going to break something!" LOL. Luckily, I didn't.

I was leaning over the bathtub, while cleaning it. Lost my balance and fell on the edge of the tub. It hurt, but didn’t think much of it until the next morning when I was in a significant amount of pain. Went to urgent care, they sent me to the ER. ER ran a bunch of tests, admitted me. Ended having to have my gallbladder removed by surgery. It was totally full of a large gall stone that the surgeon said was broken up by me hitting it on the edge of the tub when I fell. I was hospitalized for 7 days!
Sobriquet-acushla@reddit
You didn’t feel the gall stone before that?

Oh my feet felt dry (all my skin does - thanks perimenopause) so I put lotion on them and then socks. Apparently my socks were quite thin and when I went to stand up (was sitting on edge of tub), I only slid until my feet hit the basin of my sink - hard. Nice nasty bruise on one foot and the both swelled.
It doesn't look as bad now a week later, but ...ouch.

I whacked my kneecap on a chair the other day. That sucked so much. The cats were all staring at me because I was making disturbing noises.
No, it's not weird, but it was unexpected. In hindsight, I should not have done that.
I have become really clumsy and seem to have very little situational awareness nowadays. I used to do ballet and stuff, now I'm extremely graceless.

About 6 years ago I was at my SIL ‘s house. Their living room floor is lower than the dining room floor. They had rearranged the table to fit 11 of us around the table. Scooted my chair back to get up and the back legs dropped off the step. I fell backwards and tried to catch myself. Ended up tearing my rotator cuff.
Sobriquet-acushla@reddit
They should not have had your chair so close to a step.

Been a few years ago I was dyingy hair. I was standing outside the tub just sticking my head in the shower stream to wash the dye out. Floor got wet, I slipped and fell on the side of the bathtub. I thought I had just cracked some ribs but a week later when I was still in pain I went to the doctor to see if they could tape them to alleviate it a bit I found out I actually had partially collapsed both lungs. The Dr looked at me like I was both tough and insane for just walking around with lungs collapsed.

I've mostly had several close calls nearly wiping out tripping over my own two feet and my balance not being what it used to be. I used to skateboard everywhere and my balance was great for a long time. I find this very annoying. A while ago I slid getting out of bed and wedged myself between the bed and my dresser, and I do mean wedged. My arms were pinned against me and of course I started catastrophizing and I was sure I would be found days later still stuck there. After the most awkward wriggling around for what seemed like forever I managed to get up. Funny now, but kinda scary then.
itsmyvoice@reddit
I've started standing on one foot frequently to keep up strength and balance because I'm deathly afraid of this. I have enough trouble with falling over things. I don't need to fall over myself.

I didn’t get hurt but I did get trapped in a wet tankini at a pool once. Of course, there wasn’t a single other soul in the locker room. I don't have EDS but I've got RA and in between the swelling episodes, my joints will dislocate randomly. Usually it's my thumbs and right shoulder and sometimes my right ankle. They pop back in, and you know how pleasant that feels, especially if you're already in a weird sleeping position to keep other parts from screaming. I'm scared to turn over in my sleep.

Been there, done that. You've got to stretch from the ball of your feet to the base of your head. Your back side is too tight. Just stretch what you can, a little bit at time. My foot doctor edumacated me on all this. Whenever I feel my calves tightening up I know I need to stretch. Plantar fascia will start hurting next. Cheers 🥃

IDK how it happened. On my left foot I either dropped something or stubbed the big toe and second toe. The toe nail on the big toe came off some weeks later and the second toe is still black and purple under the toe nail. The weird thing is clearly I recall that it hurt and saying to myself "Fuck, I don't have time to deal with this right now. I'll mussel through and deal with it later." I literally cannot recall the incident, the day or what I was doing. I've been really busy with business trips and projects around the house. It definitely happened around the third week of February at home in the house or I would have had my logger boots on. I don't have any age related memory issues nor have I ever suppressed memories in the past.
roochada@reddit
When I was around 10 or so I had a friend you lived in a very uniquely house. The house was made to look like several igloos put together to make one larger igloo compound. It was made out of spray styrofoam and I assumed it was built to be, well unique.
As kids normally do we wound climb the trees around the house and make our way on the roof. One day after some rain we were on the roof in our spot and I was sitting and I slid off while on my ass and landed that way on the ground, ass first in a sitting position. As soon as I hit I knew I f^#&& up. It not only knocked the breath out of me but it caused severe pain in my lower back and hip.
Since we were told not to be on the roof I chose not to mention it to my dad or anyone else. This was during also during football season and my dad was the coach as well as the team doctor. It got to the point in which I could not only not play football but could barely walk. My dad was one of the those do-it yourself medical professionals and diagnosed me with a hip pointer. Well, I rode it out and after a few weeks football season ended and I went on with my life with that damn hip pointer causing me pain here and there during my teens.
Fast forward 8 years later I was involved in a car accident where it was discovered I had a cracked the L4 vertebrae and this was the first time my back was ever examined. Of course all the doctor's were really concerned and sent me to one of the top ortho/back doctors in Texas. His diagnoses was a little different than the family doc saying that vertebrae was a very old injury and couldn't have been recent. That's when it struck me. That damn igloo house had been affecting me for all these years, that had to be when it happened.

I nearly shanked myself with my own bra. One end actually broke skin! I don’t wear those anymore. Consequently, I’ve been on a a search for the mythical perfect no-wire bra. One of the first ones I tried seemed okay at first but then I reached for something. February 2025. After being awakened at 1:20 am by the beeping smoke detector, I discovered my house was on fire — from the outside going in, and two feet away from the propane tank.
After calling the fire department — which took 30+ minutes to get here (rural 40 acre property during a catastrophic ice storm with mega winds and waist high snow drifts) — I started shoveling snow (pure adrenaline) onto the side of the house (board & batten) to slow the spread of fire, wearing nothing but my housecoat and winter boots btw)
The fire and tanker trucks arrived and saved the rest of the house - but I ended up separating the abductor muscle from my hip replacement. 5 1/2 hour surgery to remove original artificial hip, reconnect the muscle and then replace the hip, and now 15 months later, I’m still in recovery but the house is almost rebuilt back to normal.

About this time last year I was helping a student in our 10th grade English class go downstairs to the clinic. I had taken a long-term sub job for an Intervention Specialist. This student in my 7th period class apparently spent her lunch hour getting high rather than eating bad cafeteria food. She was dizzy and my lead teacher and I didn't want her falling down the stairs. All good deeds, and all that, I guess. Anyway, as I helped support her down the stairs I pinched in a nerve in my neck (I have Cervical Stenosis from a bad car accident in 2017). I was in horrible daily pain from mid-April through August, when it finally subsided. We didn't find out until the next day that she was high, we just thought she had a virus, I knew she wasn't drunk because we didn't smell alcohol (that had been my first though--a liquid lunch). Fortunately, she was okay, and I'd always protect a student first and foremost but I wish I'd figured a path to the clinic that didn't wrench my neck. Ugh!

I was raking leaves back in October, and the next day my left elbow started swelling up. After two weeks with no improvement, went to ortho doctor. Turns out I ruptured my bursa. Now, it's either cortisone shots for pain, or surgery to remove it. FML...
Creepy_Radio_3084@reddit
I did both my elbows in trimming my mother's hedge wiith (rather blunt) hand shears (at 6 months pregnant, no less). Had my right arm in a sling and the left heavily strapped, and someone else had to cut my food for two weeks. Cortisone injections were a godsend!

Last night at the grocery store I put two English cucumbers in my cart, one fell out and I didn’t notice. I stepped on it with my right foot which started to turn the ankle so I caught myself with the other ankle and proceeded to step on the other half of the cucumber and turn my left ankle. I couldn’t make up this silly of a story

I had to lift up a big bucket of water and I didn't realize how heavy water was and that it moves around so it pulled some weird muscles in my back that hurt so bad that it made me nauseous and I couldn't hardly move for about a week. it was just over a year ago now, but.... rolled over in bed and went to push the covers off with my legs, and felt a rubber-band snap in the inner back of my knee. I'm only 47 and I'm approaching 8 months out with a new left knee, and my right knee to be replaced in less than 3 weeks.

I stepped off a level straight curb, onto a straight level asphalt road. I was DD, so no alcohol or fun stuff in my system. My ankle twisted outward, I felt a pop as my entire body landed on it. I still walked with our friends to where my car was parked. Drove everybody home, went home myself and went to bed. Woke in the morning in absolute agony with an ankle the size and color of an eggplant. Took an uber to urgent care. Instead of my ligament stretching or tearing off it held on tight as superglue and snapped my 5th metatarsal instead. It took almost 8 mos to completely heal. But I did have an awesome pirate Oleg
Nelyahin@reddit
I got up to walk into my kitchen and get coffee, tripped over nothing and tore a ligament in my ankle. Couldn't move downstairs for over a month.
Creepy_Radio_3084@reddit
Not lately (as in within the last month) but fairly recently...
Woke up in the middle of the night needing the bathroom. Had clearly 'slept wrong' and my right foot and ankle had fallen asleep. Ignored that, stupidly put my weight on my right foot first when getting out of bed, right foot decided to bend inwards, I was past the point of no return and brought my whole weight down on my poor ankle! Forward momentum had me going face first into the side of a wardrobe, so I threw my right arm up and pushed myself sharply backwards to land on my butt. This woke my partner - I assured him I was fine, got myself up off the floor (LEFT foot first this time) and hobbled to the bathroom. Foot and ankle were still numb, so didn't really register much, went back to bed, slept until morning.
IN THE MORNING... OMG! My ankle was swollen and multicoloured, and rather painful. I strapped it up and carried on, but it took a number of months for the swelling to go down completely. I don't believe I broke anything, but all the ligaments and tendons in my ankle took some serious abuse!
Blerkm@reddit
Ugh, that sucks! I tripped in my living room just before last Thanksgiving and sprained my left ankle. They really do take a long time to heal.
Creepy_Radio_3084@reddit

I have very mild hip arthritis but it never flared like that. I couldn't walk on it for a day. I went to a doctor who referred me to PT. I've done tons of hip PT so figured I'd restart some exercises I already had on prior instructions. But the next day I woke up and it was 100% fine.

As I crouch down, I realize I am on an incline and I haven’t squatted much in the last few years. As I’m falling forward, I yelled “I guess I can’t squat anymore” all I could think was about my camera, I landed with it up in air, but lots of scrapes and messed up left arm. Lots of physical therapy needed to recover for that one. But my new camera was unharmed :)

OMG! The timing of this! 2 weeks ago I stepped on a weed growing out of my driveway while wearing Dansko clogs and it was enough to cause me to badly twist my left ankle. As I fell I tried to stop myself and managed to pull muscles in my chest, neck, arm, and hip. I felt like I was hit by a car and it took a week before I began to feel myself.
10 days after that fall, with my ankle still bruised and tender, I decided to do some yard work, stepped on a pebble while holding a ladder and twisted my RIGHT ANKLE! 🥴😩 Luckily it’s not as bad as the previous fall, but my right foot is now sore and tender… and my left foot is still sore and tender… so now I’m left hobbling around the house! 😭

General advice for us GenX and GenJones’ers - work on resistance training, and keep improving on the weights.
A lot of falls, and the impacts of falling, are helped by having decent muscles, and they also act as a buffer between bones and things you fall on.
Also helps keeps you active so you get the protection for dementia etc.

Severely pulled my inner leg groin muscles trying to get into my van & trying to avoid the noxious puddle right under the driver's door. The puddle wasn't there when I parked by the way. I couldn't pour water on it like I'd normally do because the temp was already at 35°F & dropping fast. I wasn't going to leave an ice slick for someone to slip on. I'm short & fat, I almost made it then my butt slipped off the side of the seat & i was hanging onto my steering wheel & the door for dear life. I had to put my foot in the puddle to push myself back up (yuck). I hadn't even realized I hurt myself until I tried to walk up the stairs to go to bed that night. It healed after 5-6 weeks but I never knew how much you use those muscles when driving until that injury happened. My alternate weird injury (& I've got lots of stories) was dislocating my little toe stepping over my husbands feet as i walked through a doorway. I caught my toe on his shoe as I stepped over his feet.

My chair swung and then my ski snagged the snow getting on a chairlift, causing me to eject. My arm twisted around, dislocating at the shoulder. Now I have several months of physical therapy before surgery and then more physical therapy….
StreetMolasses6093@reddit
So, my ski caught like that once years ago and wrenched my leg back, ripped my ski off. I didn’t fall off, by my leg was really hurt and had the most impressive contusion. I always wondered what would have happened if the ski hadn’t popped off.
It was 22 years ago, so if the same happened now, I’m sure my leg would have broken. It was wrenched back hard. I can picture exactly how that happened to you.
How are you now? I’m actually really worried about you.

Husband kept waking up due to hip pain, mentioned it at his next check-up, and was sent for x-rays to rule out cancer.
It didn’t occur to us until later that he’d recently spent the better part of two days breaking up ice with a pickaxe all along our sidewalk and driveway, as well as those of our elderly neighbors. I suspect repeatedly bracing himself so he wouldn’t lose his footing somehow messed up his hip.

At work about 2 months ago, I got up to get a cup of tea, tripped over my own two feet, & fell hard enough to need to have my knee injection rescheduled because the bruising on my right knee was so bad. Also jacked up my left wrist/thumb & hit my face so hard on the floor that I saw stars & gave myself a black & blue left eye that didn’t show up until 3 days later. Thank God no one saw or heard me.
Two weeks after that, I heard something rustle in the rocks about 10 feet away from me at 4:30 a.m. in the dark as I was leaving for work. I threw my heavy work bag clear across the backseat of my car, flung my equally heavy purse into the front seat, & jumped into the driver’s seat so fast that I hit my head on the doorframe on the first attempt (seeing stars for a second time), then bruised my ribs on the console between the driver & passenger seats & slammed my left ankle in the door twice while attempting to close the door (for context, my car is a 2023 Corolla). Also strained my neck when I hit my head on the car. I have no idea what, if anything, was actually on the rocks.
I’m about ready for incident #3.

My black cat jumped and landed on my right foot, which hurt. I didn't think anything of it until the next morning. When I got out of the shower there was a big, hot swollen dark red spot on top of my foot. I ended up going to the ER because I'm a heart attack survivor and was worried it could be a blood clot. X ray did not show an obvious break and deep vein scan did not find a clot. Doctor suspected a hairline fracture...from the cat landing in my foot. Later on the red spot bruised up real ugly purple and green. Took awhile to heal. I believe the doctor was right about the hairline fracture because that foot will hurt so bad now when it gets cold or high humidity.

My grandmother used to tell me, "it's okay. You'll be old someday."
I'm approaching the age she was when I was born, am fairly active. But I had a hip injury that required a replacement.
I also remember how impatient I was walking with older people. I'd think, "yeah, I know it hurts, but you could still move faster." Um... no, you can't move faster because the pain causes your body to involuntarily freeze; and if you go too fast the pain will be right the same, but you might faceplant.
I'm at an age where I spend a lot of time and energy helping my parents. They are the boomers who worked hard all their lives and need help they can't afford. I have no kids. Last fall, I (51M) was carrying a cooler filled with ice and drinks (total weight? Probably 50-60lbs) to load into our car for a weekend in the mountains; I went down two flights of stairs with no problem. Walking ten or twenty steps into the garage, to actually put the cooler into the car? I heard and felt a loud SNAP in my knee, followed by shooting pain that eventually subsided. I didn’t think too much of it, and enjoyed a weekend of hiking with friends, bothered by occasional knee pain, but not willing to let that stop me. Since then? Worsening knee pain and instability while working out or hiking. Finally went to the doc because of the instability, and learned that I likely tore my ACL and meniscus last October. Now awaiting an MRI next week, presumably to be followed by surgery. Wheeeee!

Since March of 2025, when I experienced a major grief incident, I have this tic where I clench my left pinky until it clicks. If I don’t do it, the urge becomes overwhelming.
Now, over a year later, my pinky is constantly swollen, super painful, and difficult to bend. Yet I STILL fucking manage to do it because the urge is always there.

A couple of months ago, I was coming down the aisle of the store with an empty pallet jack. Since it had no weight on it, it had a good amount of momentum when I stopped to talk to a customer and the jack continued moving, right into the side of my foot. Since I am GenX, I jumped around and quiet yelled some expletives, and then just did what we do... took a lap and walked it off. Didn't even report it as a work accident. Over the next couple of weeks, i just went about my bidness... retail work on concrete all day, big hikes on steep PHX mountain trails on the weekends. I noticed some pain that I thought was muscular or whatever... maybe a hiking injury? By that point I had forgotten about the pallet jack altogether, but only remembered a slight ankle twist on a rock and though that was the problem.
Well, after finally going to the doctor about it and getting xrays, he said that my cuboid bone had a hairline fracture and if I didn't get in a walking boot pronto, the damn thing could just split. So, in the boot I went for a month, until another xray showed healing. I'm out of the boot now, but it still hurts like hell some days. I got back for another xray this Tuesday, but even if it's fully healed, I dunno how I'm supposed to deal with the collateral pain that its caused with my ankle and top of the foot, which hurts like hell if I move it a certain way. Looks like it's going to be a long stretch of recovery and I may miss several months of beloved trail hiking.
Long story, but a good example of classic boneheaded GenX "independence" leading to long lasting hassle. Gotta unlearn that whole "rub some dirt on it and walk it off" thing as I'm about to head into my 60s in June.

Stupid sneaky ram hit my thigh. Rammed my thigh with his highly evolved curved horns and thick skull. He’s going to auction on Tuesday. Ha.
Misfitranchgoats@reddit
OW! I know a lot of Rams can be dangerous especially in breeding season. I have goats, with horns. I was using a sorting board trying to move one of my big bucks and he decided to go under the board. He flipped me up over his back. I felt like I hung there in a the air for a minute like a character in a looney tunes cartoon. Then I fell, down onto the fiberglass grate. Thought I broke my arm. But it wasn't broken, just bruised badly and bleeding. I laid there for a bit and cried. Then I made sure the goats could get back to the pasture and I went in the house and iced my arm and had a couple beers after washing out the wounds.
By the way the goat that tossed me in the air is named Dickhead. I don't think he actually meant to hit me and toss me in the air, as he usually just runs away from me ;- ) so I didn't take him to the sale barn yet. LOL
BraveLittleFrog@reddit

On Wednesday, I the dog a bath, leaning over the tub. Usually, I get in the tub with him and stand over him, but not this time. I had some muscle fatigue in my glutes and thighs, and felt some minor fatigue in my lower back but nothing I couldn’t handle…or so I thought.
My lower back has been in spasm for the last four days. Alternating between tylenol and flexeril, sleeping flat with a heating pad at night, icing intermittently during the day. The heat keeps my muscles from spasming at night, the ice has helped with pain and swelling.
But at least the white dog is no longer beige.

Husband was trying to teach me how to ride a motorcycle. I failed the test, so I was doing the low-speed exercises so I could take the test again. Hit the kill switch without engaging the clutch. Tried to keep the bike upright but at the angle it was, pipe was burning into my leg, just below the burn guard I had on. Finally dropped the bike and rolled off it. Was so concerned about the horrific burn that I had no idea I broke my tailbone until the next day. Couldn’t take 3 steps without my pelvic area/legs seizing. Learned the only way to walk without seizing was to sway. This was 2018 and I’m still dealing with it because a couple years ago, I was getting out of the pool to go pee - no problem. Went to get back in but stepdaughter was sitting on first step, so I put my foot down behind her ass except my foot hit the tile on the edge of the step. Foot slipped out and I wound up hitting the coping in the crack of my ass and broke my tailbone again. Good times.

This past winter we were having our tile kitchen floor replaced. We lost indoor access to our basement for about a week. No big deal, we can still access the basement using outdoor access. Obviously in the winter, it’s more inconvenient. We also crate our dogs in the basement, so we did have to access the basement several times a day.
We got home about 9PM one night after a freak snow. We had to let the dogs out before going to bed. We had a heavier snow about a week prior that had mostly melted, but re-froze in spots. I was having a hard time telling where the old (and now icy) snow patches were with the inch or so of new snow that had just fallen and was walking down the least steep downhill area to get from the driveway to our basement and I slipped in an icy patch.
My legs slipped ahead of me. I braced myself with my right hand, and fell hard on my right side, primarily my hip. Everything immediately hurt-back, rear end, hip, leg. I kind of just rolled onto mg right side laying in snow, contemplating if/how I could/should move. My husband saw it all happen. and came over to help me up. He asked me if I was OK. I told him that I thought so. I got up, we brushed all of snow off, took the dogs out, and then we got ready for bed.
I woke up at 1AM in excruciating pain. I went to the bathroom. My right arm was non-functional. I was sweating trying to wipe and just pull my pants and undies up. I knew I was hurt, but I was also very tired. I took 2 Motrin and tried to get to sleep. I couldn’t. My husband asks me if I need to go to the ER. I told him yes. He offered to drive me, but our 10 year old had to be on the school bus in a few hours and I had no clue how long the ER would take. I told him to stay home and I’ll just drive myself. My other arm was fine and I was able to at least prop my right hand on the steering wheel to drive.
So, to recap-I slipped on icy grass (not even on a frozen sidewalk) at 9PM on a Monday night, the week before Christmas when there’s an inch of snow on the ground.
Turns out I broke my right wrist AND my elbow. Since I’m now of a certain age…I’ve also gained the ability to tell when bad weather is rolling in. My daughter had 1 wrapped gift (that my husband wrapped) for Christmas, since I had nothing wrapped prior to breaking my wrist and elbow. Everything else was in Christmas gift bags. I also did no Christmas baking due to the injuries.

I took off jogging around the corner of my house, tripped on a very small incline and fell. I never felt any pain except when my face hit the ground breaking my sunglasses. I looked at my left hand and my pinkie finger was disfigured. I broke a bone in it. I ended up have 2 screws put in and still can barely use it or move it.

I gave both my calves really bad muscle spasms by pushing a power sled at the gym. I’ve pushed the sled dozens of times before, but this time I didn’t stretch as long as I did before. I tore my ACL (including partial tear of meniscus) playing volleyball 12 years ago. I was old then. All was well until last December when I tweaked my knee getting out of my lounge chair and felt an ache that didn't immediately go away. I wore a brace for a month, all was well. Mid-march, bent down to reach under a bedroom dresser and tweaked it again. Ache started all over again. Brace put back on. That night, sitting in my bathtub, pulled myself forward with the heels of my feet and my knee locked up.
Long story short, I am now 12 days post knee surgery to "clean it up" after tearing more meniscus and getting meniscus caught in my knee mechanism. All because of getting up out of a chair, kneeling to reach under a dresser, and finally, pulling myself forward in a bathtub.

So I've had a lucky run of it for most of my life; if I got injured, I could basically ignore it for a while and be good to go in a few days. (Exception for broken bones, serious skin tears that needed stitches)
About a year and a half ago, I woke up with numbness and tingling in my left arm and hand. It got more intense as the day went on, started to really hurt, so my wife took me to the ER to get checked out. No sign of heart issue, of stroke, etc, they basically had no idea what's going on. Nothing had "happened" that I could remember to cause the problem. It moved around my arm, would go up into my shoulder, down into my hand on the pinky side.
The pain was intense and moved around my arm and shoulder. I had to beg off from work, I couldn't focus on anything, after a while I got into a pattern of working until I couldn't stand it, then taking breaks. No pain reliever touched it. This went on for weeks; I finally got an appointment with a sports medicine doctor who diagnosed it as a pinched nerve in my left elbow. (She checked a number of things, did xrays, etc.)
A few days later, an ultrasound-guided injection of cortisone into the offending nerve brought immediate relief. Thank God for 21st century medicine. There is lasting damage; I have never regained full feeling in the pinky of my left hand, will probably be numb there for the rest of my life due to nerve damage. I can deal with that, I'm not in pain. Anyway, it was easily the strangest injury that I've ever had.
xgenman@reddit
Wow, I had a very similar experience last year; my whole left arm was going numb whenever I'd lay down in bed. Went to the ED several times, coincidentally had an inverted t-wave with my heart rhythm the 2nd time (I'd just recovered from a flu which can apparently cause this) so they put me in the cardiac ward overnight to monitor me, had to do a stress test where they run you uphill on a treadmill until heart rate gets to like 180bpm and then quickly lay down and try hold my breath while they captured images... thought i was going to die right there lol... all that until finally on the last ED visit, the doctor asked if I'd injured my neck recently. I had injured it at work about a year previous to that and so they did scans and yeah, pinched nerve.
I had like a 2wk wait to get my first therapy session and it was so bad, my mum convinced me to see a chiropractor - something I never in my life thought i'd ever do. Always thought of them as quacks, but thought, what the hell. First adjustment relieved the pain, and with 2 sessions/wk, the numbness was gone after about a month.
WhatFreshHello@reddit (OP)
I listened to a podcast last night with an actress from “The Pitt” and she mentioned that she now sees a chiropractor/kinesiologist to help with repetitive strain from take after take of lifting and moving bodies from gurney to bed, always on the same side.
We have a couple of pretty shady chiropractors around here, but the kinesiology part in particular made sense. I’m a firm believer in whatever works, so I’m glad you listened to your mum and are doing much better.
Ray_The_Engineer@reddit
Yeah, I've always had a similar opinion of chiropractor's, but I was beginning to consider it. Whatever gets me out of pain. I just didn't want to have to get into a repeat visit situation.
xgenman@reddit
Sounds like a scam, but it really does take multiple visits to get everything to eventually stay in place. It was well worth the cost to me. I still go every now and then, because I like it, and to support the practitioner who fixed it. I'm very grateful. I hadn't slept properly for about a month because of the anxiety when laying there and feeling it going to sleep and thinking I was going to be depriving my arm of oxygen all night. The GPs answer to that was anti-anxiety meds. It was a very stressful time, glad its all behind me, and glad you found a solution as well
No-Chair-8068@reddit
I used to go often when I was younger. The thing that makes me nervous about it now is all the horror stories I read about people having internal bleeding because a neck adjustment goes wrong and severs an artery, or causes a stroke. I’d be ok with other adjustments, but ain’t nobody touching my neck.
xgenman@reddit
Ok, glad I hadn't heard of that before now. My arm would still be numb maybe. Your comment has changed my current view somewhat though

Back January I was walking through my house (tile floor) and accidentally stepped on plastic buckle from a backpack I have. It made my right foot slide on the tile and my left came down perpendicular to the floor right on the tip of my toes. It was painful but no more than stubbibg a toe. Later that day I looked at the toe next to my big toe. It was black and blue and deformed.

I got a complex meniscus tear in my knee while shopping by turning to look from one side of the aisle to the other.

Woke up. Knee felt weird. Did desk work all day. Felt weirder end of day.
Can barely walk for last two days.

Well a couple weeks ago I went crazy with cleaning the floors, every vent baseboard crack and crevice. I was squatting down to do it
Took me a couple hours, at the very end I suddenly realized I could no longer force my leg muscles to lift me up! And my husband was at work. I crawled on my hands and knees to the couch thinking oh no wtf have I done to myself? 5 days of agonizing pain. It was rough

Not the weirdest, but I haven’t slept for 2 weeks and have serious neck/shoulder pain because I got a new pillow.
WhatFreshHello@reddit (OP)
I swear, finding a pillow that doesn’t mess up your neck is a near-impossibility - especially if you’re a side sleeper.
Ditch that one and maybe try some combination of foam chunk and feather pillows. That works for me…some of the time. 😩

mtutty@reddit
Had crippling stiffness and pain in both Achilles tendons. Could hardly walk the day after playing soccer. Went to my doctor, got PT - nothing helped. Thought I was going to have to quit playing completely.
Then, somehow, I figured out it wasn't running at all - it was putting my feet up on the ottoman while watching TV. It takes 8-12 hours between cause and effect, so it always hit in the mornings.
No-Chair-8068@reddit
Something similar happens if I put my feet up for too long on the coffee table. As if my knees were bent backward for too long and don’t ever want to bend the right way again.

Urgent care appt tomorrow for pulled chest muscle. Original injury was a ratchet pruner incident 1 week ago. Reinjury from picking up trash for earth day events yesterday 😭👍🌍should not have done that until i fully recovered

Was breaking down an old full size bed frame and putting together a new one by myself. Moved the mattress and box spring a couple times and got it done and felt fine. Two days later my right side was sore enough to warrant a doc visit and a CT scan. Apparently just strained myself and it took a couple days to present. Upside, new bed frame is more supportive so I’m sleeping better :)
No-Chair-8068@reddit
At least the mattress didn’t fall on top of you and send you sprawling inside the metal bed frame, breaking a rib. Note to self: ask for help when flipping a big-ass mattress.

Most recently smashing by head on a counter reaching down to pick something up. Most epically, had my thyroid removed due to cancer. Cancer - fine, surgery - fine, recovering from surgery and somehow the IV came undone and starting sucking out instead on pumping in. I was so groggy and sleepy. I could feel I was wet around my abdomen and thought that was weird. I had an argument with myself over whether or not to open my eyes and see what was up because I was so incredibly sleepy. I finally looked, saw myself covered in blood, used the nurse button just saying “there’s blood…there’s.. a lot of blood?” The nurses rushed in, went into a panic, there was so much blood they had to mop off the mattress. And this is how I will die. Not from something serious, but some stupid freak accident.

Woke up the other day with tennis elbow so bad I couldn’t grip anything. If I extend my arm my wrist feels like it was electrocuted.

Fell down the stairs and damaged the tissue in my butt - couldn't walk or sit properly for, so far, over a month. A week later, fell down the stairs AGAIN and made it worse and added a open dislocation of a finger. Still got the 'bone through skin' scab / cant bend, but the butt issue much more of a bother. Everyone is recommending a stana stairlift sigh
ConstantConfusion123@reddit
Ouch! I have an old house with a rather steep staircase. I'm mildly terrified of missing a step. I did once, and luckily was able to sort of run down the last couple steps and catch myself with the bathroom door jamb. A few bruises but no breaks...this time. Sorry about your sore butt.

GoddessRayne@reddit
Woke up one morning a few weeks ago with my left hip incredibly painful. I figured I “slept wrong” and went a few days expecting it to improve before making a doc appt online. PA diagnosed bursitis but we did get X-rays too to be sure. Seems my cat slept on my leg just so as I was on my right side and forced my hip into a poor position for too long. Still gets stiff and sore if I do too much. Of course The Cat Injury timed perfectly with have a test nerve numbing procedure on my back the next week, which required me to do the activity that triggered the back pain right after the procedure, which was primarily walking for more than a few minutes. So off I went, pirate-stomping through the neighborhood. I couldn’t take any ibuprofen for five days before or right after the procedure either, and Tylenol didn’t help the hip hardly at all!
No-Chair-8068@reddit
I slid down three porch steps because I was wearing old shoes with no tread left. Caught the toe of my right foot as I was falling and launched myself forward, crashing onto the paving stones on my front walk. My knee was so badly bruised, it swelled up like a grapefruit. I was on crutches for two weeks.
After it healed, I put my crutches in the shop. A neighbor cat knocked one over. I walked through the shop in the dark to grab something and tripped over the crutch. 😂
A couple months before that, I was trying to flip my huge queen pillow-top mattress by myself. As ai was turning it, it fell on top of my, sending me crashing INTO the metal platform bedframe. Broke a rib, and could barely get out from under the mattress to extricate myself.

I have a low and deep couch and I always get up without hands to get a little extra core workout. A couple of moths ago one foot got tangled in my blanket and tripped me.
Unluckily the other foot bent over and it was sprained. Luckily I was able to go into a deep front lunge. I stode up and then sat down and raised my foot immediately and watched my foot swell up.
Moral of the story? This is why I work out 3x a week and do 20 minutes of stretching with that. Ankle strength is super influential in saving a person from falling. I sprained my ankle and I did not fall and break a bone. Get a workout program going. Its time.

Turned the light off in the garage and walked up the small set of steps to open the door and let myself in the house. I slipped on the second to last stair. I stopped myself by grabbing the column nearby and wrenching my shoulder. I also overcorrected and jammed my toes into the floor. If I had simply let myself go, I would have just fallen into a cabinet. Instead I'm on ibuprofen for the last week.

ALDI parking lot. I was helping someone get the quarter back out of their shopping cart (IYKYK) and my cart started rolling down the parking lot.
