To be fair, while I'm conflicted on the execution of the maneuver, I would say Toyota man is a chaotic neutral hero. However, I think the truck in the left lane just needed to slow down a tad bit to let the feller pass so traffic wasn't impeded that much. Sure, left lane semi has no obligation to slow down and let him pass, but something tells me if right lane trucker tried to pass on the right, as would be acceptable if he were able to do it, left lane trucker was going pretty slow and decided to match speed when he saw right lane man attempting to pass.
Thats totally dependant of weather his truck is governed or not. My truck is 65 on cruise and 63 on the pedal. Passing is a mess because the sensor has a 3.5 second follow distance that I cant adjust. Let's say someone is dragging ass in the right at 61 mph, my truck will slow to 61mph when im approx 3.5 seconds back. I'll hit the fuel, but it will only go to 63, so that takes a minute to get to him, but I dont want to get into the left lane yet, because general traffic goes faster than 65, then when I get up to him, my camera starts beeping, because my company will cite me if im within 1 second following distance for too long, so I either need to get over if its clear, or back off if its not.
Its clear so I get over, now that adds 2 mph, not much, but over 600 miles that 65 gets me where I need to go just in time compared to that 61. Then there's a hill, now my 65 turns into 60 and I now have a line of 6 cars behind me, so I have to get back over to the right, and im back where I started.
It's not dependent on anything. If you're in a governed slow truck like that. You should not be passing AT ALL, the only thing you should be doing is slowing down if needed. The moment the person you tried to pass wants to be a clown and speed up, you just created a bottle neck.
Lol no. If someone is going slower than me im gonna pass them. I do what I can to prevent a bottleneck, but at the end of the day im still responsible for making time. Its really not my fault that you can't go 75 for a little bit.
Thats all dependant on whos behind the wheel, if I get out to pass and its not working out, and people stack up, I have not problem backing off and getting back over.
I also have no problem losing a few mph gor a second so someone doesn't get hung up trying to pass me.
The problem with trucking in general is that we are all individual people. For every responsible driver out there, there's 10 duck heads who will hang up a whole row just so they dont break cruise for 30 seconds. Like the guy in this OP.
I generally dont pass people going the speed limit, but there are people out there who do go slower. Its been a challenge going from a truck that was governed at 68 to the one I have now.
Still shouldn't attempt to pass unless you can do at least 5 faster than the guy you're passing. You're really not losing much if you do 60 instead of 63.
When I first got the truck, I am currently trapped in (2026 Freightliner POS) before I took it back to the shop to bump up the governor, it was set at 73 cruise, 65 pedal with that God awful adaptive cruise and the 362 feet. I would use on-ramps, off-ramps, the shoulder, and jump out into the left lane to get away from the obstacles that were in front of that stupid sensor.. It was torture!
When it comes to turtle racing, if you are right, you are always wrong. Always slow down after a minute of bullshit. If you really think you are so much faster, then let him pass and wait for the 800 cars you guys were both holding up to go past and then pass him.
Should’ve brake checked the one in the right lane cause you know good and well he sped up on the truck in the left lane when he seen he was trying to pass
This happens to me dozens if not hundreds of times a day and it makes me absolutely furious. Sometimes it's intentional — in Louisiana in particular I'll get people eyeballing me in their mirrors while they play this game. But my theory is most people don't know how fast they're going or what the speed limit is, they just drive based on vibes and if they're getting passed by a truck the vibe is they're going too slow.
Why the truck in the right lane? Look further up that flat bed with curtains was struggling to pass someone else. Don’t know if the other guy was sitting back enough to not trigger is tailgating alarm.
Honestly should have slowed down the guy in the right lane for being an ass hat. I’m willing to bet the guy on the left started his maneuver miles back when there was no traffic and the guy in the right lane just wouldn’t give ground. But either way, good stuff rogue four wheeler! 😂
What’s the appropriate move when the guy on the right is seemingly trying to match your speed (im asking as a 4 wheeler)? On one hand, I feel like I’ll speed up way too much trying to get ahead of those types of drivers, and on the other, i feel like I’d be slowing down way too much for the people behind me to get back over behind the speed matcher.
My rule of thumb is if someone catches up to me they can pass me, and I'll click the cruise down and let em by. In my speed governed days if someone just wouldn't let me pass I'll bump the cruise down and tuck back behind. Luckily I was hourly then which definitely helped with my attitude, but I was in a way better mood when I just focused on getting my job done without fighting to be as fast as possible.
At my last company driver gig the trucks were governed at 70 and I cruised at 65 just so I would have a little headroom to prevent four wheelers from trying to bully me. I got better fuel mileage than anyone else in the fleet and was consistently a top 3 performer mileage wise out of ~90 drivers because I keep the door closed and don't waste time. That 5 mph never cost me as much as customers holding me up with 9 hours of detention, anyway.
Less than the stress maxing my efficiency was costing me imo. I will admit it's damn nice to be able to drop the hammer and just pass now. Bigger perk than I realized.
Oh I fully agree, and I have no issue doing that. Just sometimes you go to pass someone and they don’t like it, so they start matching your speed to not let you pass, like how /u/InShapeTrucker suggested. But sometimes they slow back down to match your speed when you give up and just try to get behind them, which just really irritates everybody (usually the offending car is also a 4 wheeler in this scenario).
Usually I just wait for the next car up in the right to slow the car down, since they weren’t catching up to the person ahead of them before, but sometimes there just isn’t enough traffic for that.
As long as you don't suddenly break hard you'll be fine. When I'm in the situation I usually tap on my brakes a couple times at first, just to light up my stop lights and make sure everyone gets the picture. In most cases I'll also let my truck or car coast down since it's not as fast as braking.
Also keep your signal on so people know you're trying to get over and not just slowing down. Most people let you, inevitably some people will try to go right around because people are impatient suck. Just roll with it and get over when it's safe. And hope the person who tried to drag race. You has a breakdown and has to wait 2 hours for a tow.
One of my favorites is throwing a block when they try to cut right and then everyone that waited on me gets to hammer down and their bitch ass is stuck behind me
I've been the guy in the right lane and some of these guys will wait till they are starting up a hill, or they just coasted down a hill and then don't have the power to pass. My truck holds its speed up hill and down.
I'll double that bet that guy in the left lane moved over to let guy in the right in at an on ramp, and then guy on the right decided to hammer down and hang him out there.
Had that happen to me today. Radar says Oakley in front of me is doing 66 and holding that speed. I go to pass and he speeds up to his limiter screwing me over. Thankfully it was the Ohio Turnpike with three lanes and almost no traffic so noone got held up like in this video.
What are you governed at, and were you running max speed? Was it in the 65 zone before it bumps back to 70 and down to 2 lanes? Maybe they were just doing the speed limit. Was there someone in front of them that was also in a governed truck, or perhaps a car that they were playing the accordion game with? Maybe they were running 66 (probably read 65 on their speedo) to let a 69er get far enough out front to have a safe following distance. I know you said “almost no traffic” but there’s pretty much no such thing unless you’re in the sticks on some backroads during overnight hours.
Maybe don’t view things as malicious attacks directed at you, when it could be as innocuous as dude didn’t remember to reset cruise after some maneuvering and a speed limit increase. If y’all are running the same speed after, then just back off, tuck in, leave a good gap, and enjoy the ride.
A lot? Try almost every single one of them. Who gives s shit if someone passes you? The way they all speed up when getting passed, it's like you are on your way to bang their wife.
Right truck definitely remembered he had an accelerator as the left truck was trying to pass. Probably kept going from 70 to 62 and back to 70. So many lame brain retards refuse to let me pass in my governed 65 truck and then 2 miles later they’re back at 62 and my distance warning is beeping every 10 seconds.
That's what I was thinking too. He left distance, but there was nowhere to pass with the other truck still in front of them.
On the other hand, this is why I don't sit over there for a line to form. Overall flow of traffic is more important than any one person saving 1 minute. I will generally wait until faster traffic has all passed and then I will pass.
If you get in the hammer lane, Hammer down! Don't be a fucking turd by lingering and clogging the flow. Guy in the right lane don't be that asshole that speeds up because you're about to get passed up.
My favorite is a highway near me where there's two consecutive huge hills in one spot. The heavier trucks pass going downhill because they have more speed, but don't make it in time and then the lighter truck starts rebounding to make a pass on the right side going up hill, and then we do it again going down and up the next one 🥴
Yeah, no dude. It looks like ATS is just pacing the covered wagon in front of them. Not everyone has to be on the ass of the vehicle in front, this is really dumb.
A lot of the comments are impatient drivers (trucker and passenger) who are clearly ok with reckless driving simply because they can’t be patient enough for someone to pass someone.
I mean, I would also consider myself an impatient driver. But shit happens when passing. People suddenly remember they want to go faster after all and such.
But this is clearly some dude pacing the truck in front of them waiting for them to get back over so they can pass. Maybe both, probably not if they're going to maintain distance like that.
I’m not cause if I’m passing someone and you’re impatient don’t ever do no reckless shit like that cause i will hit you and will have a dash cam to prove me innocent too. if someone is holding that lane then sure but from the video it looks like the truck was passing. Also there’s been an influx of other drivers (trucker or passenger) that have been getting their second wind as someone is passing a lot lately.
You plan to intentionally hit someone for getting in front of you and going slightly slower than you and think that dashcam footage will exonerate you?
• Camry rode up the shoulder and cut across one truck and then hit the brakes causing the truck to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them (you can literally see the trailer hop and the truck swerve a bit)
• I don’t know about you but I know how much space is needed to slow down and also know it depends on the weight. Do you know how much space is needed for a truck to slow down depending on the speed and weight?
• I don’t know about you but my dash cam shows a wide scope and is gonna show a car driving recklessly because at the end of the day, what the car did is reckless driving and everyone’s reaction time is different.
If that’s your only take away from me mentioning reaction time then you definitely shouldn’t be on the road. Did you forget the four most important factors in stopping distance? Or do I need to go through that?
I mean, if he was able to get up next to the rear of the trailer, he’s obviously passing, albeit slowly. I don’t really like this behavior because I’ve been in both situations. I’ll get in the left lane because the truck in front of me is doing 55, but by the time I’m next to their trailer, they’ll speed up to match my speed or maybe a mile under or over my speed. By that time I already have a line of traffic behind me. In this scenario the guy in the right lane is the dick, but the hypothetical “brake-checker” would just swoop in and brake check me because everyone thinks I’m the asshole.
I’ve also been the guy in the right lane where I’m just minding my own business, probably jamming out to music and, admittedly not doing the best at scanning my mirrors, and notice a driver creeping past me on the left. He’s probably been there awhile because he’s only half way up my trailer and he isn’t going much faster than me. It’s late at night but he’s still got a car or two behind him. I apologize under my breath, tap my brakes, and let him pass, then I resume my speed. In this scenario, I still don’t think a brake check is justified, but someone blowing their horn at me to get me out of lala-land and pay attention is probably justified.
Don’t know how you can’t see that he’s starting to pass before the car jets over but again if he’s holding sure have fun fighting childishness with recklessness. If he’s not which to me I personally see him going past the trailer then recklessness shouldn’t be rewarded. A lot of people are impatient and I’m not going to agree with reckless driving simply because someone is impatient.
I'm constantly running into this problem. They don't want to speed up until you're passing them. The other annoying problem is that I like to cruise at 60mph to 63mph in the rightmost lane when I'm not in a hurry to be somewhere (fuel costs are increasingly motivating patientence). But other truckers want to pass me at 63.5mph or so and suddenly have the ability to go 70mph if I hit the gas because they are taking too long to pass. (Miles sometimes) I get mad because I feel that if I am doing 60mph to 63mph then I should not need to slow down further if someone feels like passing. Even Swift can go faster than that if they'd use their cruise control.
Oh I don’t ever slow down for someone passing. I just let them do their thing. I’ll flash them over as soon as they have the space though. I usually do 67-70mph and it’s always the people i crawl up on at 70mph that catch their second wind and push up to 71mph to not let me pass. I usually get back over but if I notice you keep slowing down as I’m behind you then I’m not playing a road game with you. I’m very patient and will eventually get in front of you.
Car's riding the shoulder seems to be the norm lately. The rules of the road have gone right out the window along with common courtesy. Then again when My kids were young and played GTA 4 they did some wild stuff. The same stupid stuff I see drivers doing today. You can not make this up!
I've taken the shoulder before to pass two trucks doing about 53mph next to each other in a 70 mph. The one truck had to just not check his mirror and decided to pass. I could either slam the brake or take the wide shoulder on a road I'm very familiar with.
Whatch out while you do so, somebody might steal your truck, have a joyride and crash it. Next thing you know youll wake up in your cab with an aftertaste of cinnamon and bad hangover...
Idiot behavior from the four wheeler, if you’re gonna go through all that effort to get around, then take your ass on down the road. If the truck driver has been stuck there for a while then yeah, it’s mildly annoying but not worth all this drama queen shit.

CollegeStudentTrades@reddit
I hope they at least tried the flashers method first.

What?
HowlingWolven@reddit
Come on dude at least go for broke and get the whole stack
wehavetime@reddit
I’m not cause if I’m passing someone and you’re impatient don’t ever do no reckless shit like that cause i will hit you and will have a dash cam to prove me innocent too. if someone is holding that lane then sure but from the video it looks like the truck was passing. Also there’s been an influx of other drivers (trucker or passenger) that have been getting their second wind as someone is passing a lot lately.
burritomouth@reddit
You plan to intentionally hit someone for getting in front of you and going slightly slower than you and think that dashcam footage will exonerate you?
wehavetime@reddit
Let’s analyze this video real quick.
• My next point. Reaction time!!!!
burritomouth@reddit
If your reaction time can’t deal with the scene in the video, you shouldn’t be driving.
wehavetime@reddit
If that’s your only take away from me mentioning reaction time then you definitely shouldn’t be on the road. Did you forget the four most important factors in stopping distance? Or do I need to go through that?
burritomouth@reddit
There was time to slow down. You can tell because the box van blocking all the traffic slowed down.
burnswhen_i_p@reddit
You're not smart. Or tough. Just so you're aware.

Thank you Reddit user burnswhen_i_p for that information.
yupuhoh@reddit
The only thing he appears to be passing in this video is time camping the left lane
Justin_92@reddit
In this scenario, I still don’t think a brake check is justified, but someone blowing their horn at me to get me out of lala-land and pay attention is probably justified.
wehavetime@reddit
Someone with sense. Thank you.
wehavetime@reddit
Don’t know how you can’t see that he’s starting to pass before the car jets over but again if he’s holding sure have fun fighting childishness with recklessness. If he’s not which to me I personally see him going past the trailer then recklessness shouldn’t be rewarded. A lot of people are impatient and I’m not going to agree with reckless driving simply because someone is impatient.
Rare_Indication_3811@reddit
Agree, specially looking on the line starting moving just after they made him move on.
ghostedbydefault@reddit
I'm constantly running into this problem. They don't want to speed up until you're passing them. The other annoying problem is that I like to cruise at 60mph to 63mph in the rightmost lane when I'm not in a hurry to be somewhere (fuel costs are increasingly motivating patientence). But other truckers want to pass me at 63.5mph or so and suddenly have the ability to go 70mph if I hit the gas because they are taking too long to pass. (Miles sometimes) I get mad because I feel that if I am doing 60mph to 63mph then I should not need to slow down further if someone feels like passing. Even Swift can go faster than that if they'd use their cruise control.
wehavetime@reddit

Independent_Leg7358@reddit
I've taken the shoulder before to pass two trucks doing about 53mph next to each other in a 70 mph. The one truck had to just not check his mirror and decided to pass. I could either slam the brake or take the wide shoulder on a road I'm very familiar with.

Make sure you pull over first, driver.

That's why you put a hole in your seat lined with a trash bag. Saves valuable time.

I prefer the hole to pass through the seat and floor. Hard to get my truck worked on though.

Idiot behavior from the four wheeler, if you’re gonna go through all that effort to get around, then take your ass on down the road. If the truck driver has been stuck there for a while then yeah, it’s mildly annoying but not worth all this drama queen shit.
treecutter34@reddit
I was in a car with someone who did this sober. Needless to say I didn’t ride with them again.
