Why isn't ebay doing anything to stop those scams?

There's no way this is real and ebay is doing nothing to stop those scams. Why, people are actually bidding and buying into them and it's just so sad. There are tens of ads from 0 sold account selling m3 ultra 512gb for around a thousand and change which is insane, considering you'd be pressed to even find a 16tb ssd for that price.
tecneeq@reddit
I have wondered the same. If a new user sells a high brow item with zero previous confirmed deals, why doesn't it raise alarms on their side?
Worse, searching just in your are doesn't help either, they seem to have found a trick so that local searches is now almost 90% scammers.
Deep90@reddit
The only reason I can think of is that eBay gets to hold onto the money until it's figured out.
StoneCypher@reddit
and then loses it. there’s no way that’s profitable. enay has a safety guarantee
i’m all for expecting evil from companies, but first it has to make sense
happypetrock@reddit
So eBay doesn't distribute the payment to the seller until the item has a delivery confirmation. As a result, eBay never ends up distributing the money and returns the buyers money after the appeal is complete.
Account-67@reddit
The scammer can send a package to someone in your zip code full of rocks or something, then use that tracking number to “prove” that they sent it and it was delivered.
happypetrock@reddit
Do eBay scammers do things like that? I've bought a lot on eBay and haven't encountered it, but I've always avoided items like these.
I think there's also a period of time after receipt that the buyer has to report problems with the item before the proceeds are distributed. I'm not positive about this though, so if you're speaking from experience, you're right.
Account-67@reddit
I haven’t experience it personally, but I did a lot of research because I was trying to buy a used 3090 on ebay. Based on my understanding of the buyer protection policies, it seems reasonable that it would cause problems. Multiple reddit comments indicated this was something they had experienced.
The gpu I bought was delivered successfully, but is extremely unstable at stock and when power limited, so I’ve started a return. Hoping everything works out.
Deep90@reddit
They think if Ebay holds 1.5k they are 'losing' money when giving it back.
Deep90@reddit
They can hold it up to 180 days and you can definitely skim some money doing that with even just a savings account or bond.
StoneCypher@reddit
you don’t seem to be thinking this through
they end up losing $1800
Deep90@reddit
I added to my comment.
I'm not sure why you are confused though.
Lets say a few thousand people give me a total of 1 million dollars. I know I have to give it back in 180 days.
I can throw that money into something safe like a bond. Yes I return the millions after 180 days, but I keep the interest payments.
StoneCypher@reddit
that’s not how anything works
Deep90@reddit
Dude I gave you a chance despite how rude you were because you clearly didn't understand what I was saying.
Now that I've spoonfed you that, you've decided to not even stay on topic because you want to be childish and throw insults.
Grow up.
atomicbiscuit@reddit
But don’t these accounts wait a year so that their payout is within days. If the $ was held until confirmed delivery how would the scammer get the money
TFABAnon09@reddit
They dont wait for anything - they buy or acquire compromised accounts that already have enough time served.
DistanceSolar1449@reddit
No they don’t lol. They use 0 review new accounts. They don't use reputable accounts with thousands of reviews.

PWCIV@reddit
How do they cash out? Dont you need a babk account in a name? How do they get a second bank account in another name?
DeliciousWalk9535@reddit
Yeah, it's wild how they can manipulate the system. The delay in payouts is definitely a tactic for them to cash in before getting caught. eBay needs to step up their verification processes for new sellers.
dukescalder@reddit
☝️
FatheredPuma81@reddit
But they do lose $200 doing this. Once the seller issues the refund and convinces the guy to Venmo the money to him instead eBay loses it permanently.
Single_Ring4886@reddit
Iam from europe and when i was scamed by american ebay didnt gave money to me...
RedParaglider@reddit
Yeah usually they just leave you holding the bag
Flo655@reddit
Yeah it would be so easily to flag anything suspicious these days when feeding an LLM and it would be near instant too. They are 100% planning on holding the money for a while and make a buck on it.
EbbNorth7735@reddit

Yep. It feels so weird since i am from the eu and when i look on local listings for things like iPhones on FB most of them are 3 day old accounts with some chinese or african or just random name and random prices like 7.777😭
milpster@reddit
As someone who occasionally does buy such things - it's fully covered by paypal and buyer protection, so apart from the frustration that may come off of it, there is nothing to be lost.
letsgoo0@reddit
Not ebay but other shop over paypal had the issue, that the own paypal account was closed with the explanation : "too cheap, you had to be aware of fraud. You even did that and made us in trouble. We pay you back as promised but you are not a member anymore". My friend needed a few years until he could make a new acc without being kicked directly.
milpster@reddit
ok wow that is crazy, i would really like which place that was.
Eisenstein@reddit
The place was paypal. Paypal closed the account because they were scammed, according to the person you replied to.
letsgoo0@reddit
Few years ago there was a new launch event of some chinese store. It was sth like 5 merchandises for very cheap cost. Many friends ordered various things but just got 2 or 3. For the rest they had to refund each merchandise separately and this was the response of paypal.
gscjj@reddit
eBay is notorious for siding with buyers and so is PayPal, like you said the risk is incredibly low
FuckDeRussianFuckers@reddit
I literally just did that. On eBay. Machine was delivered to buyer and all is good. Ebay kept my money for 2 weeks to make sure the buyer was happy, but it's all done and dusted now.
az226@reddit
And at a price well below market. It’s kind of insane. Execs are so out of touch.
Prestigious_Owl40@reddit
How does this scam work? Can’t I just get a refund/chargeback if I don’t receive the advertised item?
toptier4093@reddit
It surprises me people actually still use ebay these days. I haven't seen a single item on there that is not extremely significantly overpriced in years. There are many other, far more reliable sources for the majority of what's for sale on ebay.
ohyeahbonertime@reddit
Used items
toptier4093@reddit
Yeah, that's what I was referring to. I can get the sanr used items on various other platforms for a much lower price.
RingleBronger@reddit
And good luck getting a human on the phone for customer service
I bought a $500 iPad… the seller sent me an old magazine in its place
It took me one month of appealing cases before I got my money back. I during that month, I wasn’t able to talk to a human about the issue
davew111@reddit
I reported a listing on eBay for an RTX 6000 Pro for $2000. They closed the case and said they found nothing wrong with it. Either their customer service staff known nothing about computers, or they just don't care.
FlanFederal8447@reddit
Please dont fall for this. They use parcel shipped trick wit providing tracking number of the parcel that is in your area, making it hard to proof that you have never received the parcel. Reason of why ebay does not get it sorted so tat scams would stop is most likely that it is "free loan" to them having enourmous ammounts accumulate and.. Some people just abondon it after being scammed wich is a big win to ebay or even a bad actors.
SpecialistDragonfly9@reddit
Cause Ebay lives off Scams. That platform has been a mostly scammer platform for years now.
gscjj@reddit
Yeah I’ve been buying and selling off of eBay for nearly 2 decades. Servers, GPUs, all sorts of electronics, from cheap stuff to stuff that cost thousands.
There’s scams but “mostly” scams is definitely not eBay. Mostly scams would be the good old Craigslist days.
Neighbor_@reddit
Weird, I don't think I've ever encountered a single scammer on Craigslist. Probably because it's meetup based. Shipping is what does it.
cunasmoker69420@reddit
Thats not even remotely true
TheThoccnessMonster@reddit
I’ve never had a problem returning or buying something on eBay ever and I’ve used it dozens of times.
AttitudeImportant585@reddit
the problem isnt that ebay has scammers, its that OP is using ebay in 2026
silenceimpaired@reddit
What do you use in 2026?
Pedalnomica@reddit
I wouldn't say mostly. I see tons of things that look scammy, and got burned once. eBay eventually made me whole, but it took a lot of work. I still buy and sell non-scam computer parts there frequently. It is just a way better deal than anywhere else for used computer parts.
softwaregravy@reddit
I got scammed and eBay didn’t. This was nearly 20 years ago. Never bought from them again.
Safe_Sky7358@reddit
And where do you buy and sell the scam parts?🤨
Xatter@reddit
You know, when eBay first came out this is what we all thought would happen immediately
I had, in retrospect, misunderstood the power of reputation (the people rating each other) to keep things in check and was shocked/amazed it was actually working.
What changed that it no longer works I wonder?
Virtamancer@reddit
Monopoly
StandardLovers@reddit
Thats over generalising negatively; have been using ebay for 16years for lots of purchases was scammed once, contacted costumer support and got money back.
nabeelkh5@reddit
I would never buy anything off of ebay over $1000 any ways
FriendlySeaweed9314@reddit
I was once sold Nvidia h100 server for 1400 CAD. This was my first time bidding and buying out of eBay, so I totally believed it. I even received a shipping number, so I was tracking it, tracking half the way, the package got delivered in Pourto Rico.
I found the person scamming a lot of people with the same kind of ID, when I flagged it to EBay, they replied “this does not break our guidelines”.
__Maximum__@reddit
Did you get your money back?
FriendlySeaweed9314@reddit
Luckily eBay comes with money back guarantee. So I had to call few times and wait till my mentioned delivery date is past so I can prove that I didn’t receive my package.
__Maximum__@reddit
So the scammers just hope you will forget about it? What's the game?
techno156@reddit

Skywalker_Lajos@reddit

WhyYouLetRomneyWin@reddit
And what do you want eBay to do, exactly?
Protopia@reddit
Why do people sell a $100 item on eBay for $20,000? Because it is a very cheap way of laundering money.
So why doesn't eBay stop this? Because they get their cut along with plausible deniability.
Luke_Bavarious@reddit

FatheredPuma81@reddit
It's been a thing for like a decade now. I think they're honestly just too lazy and its not like they lose any money leaving them up. So what if their customer falls for it and actually Venmo's the scammer money? Its no skin off their back.
Historical-Camera972@reddit
If you buy a product on eBay, from a zero review seller, you are always taking your money and throwing it into a chaos pit.
Doubly so, if they don't have actual images of an on-hand product, and are only using marketing images from the internet.
It is not just AI rigs.
Generators, car parts, anything with a high three digit to low 4 digit price tag, are the most common.
These are in fact, all scams.
Why eBay does nothing?
Probably to justify insurance, PayPal integration, and because their shareholding reporting accounts for those scam sales.
Should eBay get gutted by a regulatory authority which could include the SEC for this?
Absolutely.
Will they?
Depends how lazy people who have the power and authority to act are.
dataexception@reddit
They actually are. New sellers and seller accounts that haven't been active for x number of days don't receive the money from the sale until after the item has been received.
I know this because I sold some DDR4 and DDR5 SODIMMs about 2 months ago. My account hadn't been particularly active for selling, and probably nothing sold in the past year. The items sold, I shipped them out, and they still held the funds for an additional week after the items were received.
Once your reputation is established, I'm guessing that goes away, but it's definitely effective in these scam cases.
rekonize@reddit
I have 22 years selling on ebay and 100% feedback, and they froze my account and are holding 100k in payouts until all my last week's orders are delivered, I'm not sure I believe them as they keep sending me emails changing the requirements to unblock my account, first "show us proof for 2 orders , then show us your bank statement, then show us your vendors order receipt... Now they changed to show us proof of delivery.... And yet. There are hundreds of obvious scam postings and everyone I reported comes back "everything looks ok for this listing "
dataexception@reddit
Yep that's pretty much exactly me, too. 100% positive feedback but only 7 years on this account. Other one that I lost was around 20 years, and also 100%. (Lost access to the email address it was registered under)
asqwez@reddit
All ebay cares about is collecting that 13.6% fee nowadays. They stopped caring about the UX a long time ago.
asqwez@reddit
Just wonderful. 🙃 I wonder if the customer service agents are complicit in the scam.
1998marcom@reddit
It would be super easy to fix on ebay's side: just ask a deposit from the seller if the seller tries to undersell a product for less than X% of its current market value as per the already active sellers' prices. Ebay could take the deposit as damages compensation for platform experience degradation if the seller doesn't complete the first transaction successfully.
Cynopolis_@reddit
I started buying off of eBay recently and fell for one of these scams when buying a rtx 3090. The seller shipped something to a random address in the same town as me, but the delivery image FedEx gave showed a package too small to fit a 3090. It was also the wrong address. I disputed the purchase with eBay and they refunded me without a fight from the scammer.
I've wised up a lot since that and now always check the sellers history before buying to.make sure they're legit.
What's even the point of these scams? Are they just hoping you don't dispute the purchase on eBay? Who would buy anything this expensive and not dispute it when it doesn't show up?
1998marcom@reddit
Maybe on large numbers they can get one person that forgets about it, and it will already be a lot of money.
jmakov@reddit
So how does the scam work? Aren't buyers protected by Ebay - the whole thing of using Ebay?
imshookboi@reddit
lets say you buy it on good faith, seller has like a week to ship it out, during that time they take the money and run, paypal/ebay profile probably built on basically burner profile data. By the time you are expecting your delivery, seller has run off with the money. Buyer protection will kick in but probably add another few weeks of dispute. You probably will get your money back, sure, and eBay will try to go after the seller and will have mixed results. Meanwhile, eBay / PayPal back end financing is probably able to actually make money on the held funds even if it's a tiny bit. Just my guess.
ElementNumber6@reddit
Better question: If legit listings are selling for $18-20k (they are), then why isn't apple moving heaven and earth to produce and sell more systems at this spec?
Why are insiders spreading rumors of a 256GB cap on the next new model?
hgshepherd@reddit
Your math is wrong. Apple makes much more money selling two 256GB systems than one 512GB system. In addition to selling a second overpriced base machine, they also get to screw another moron out of overpriced options ($100 for a $5 mouse, etc).
Torodaddy@reddit
Also dont forget apple care subscriptions!
ElementNumber6@reddit
I'm suggesting they can, should, and would, increase the price.
We're seeing, in the resale market, markups of nearly $10k selling daily.
Given the profit margins they typically netted with these (~30-40%), they can easily eclipse a 2x 256GB sale, with a single 512GB sale, without even getting 50% of the way there.
spaceman3000@reddit
They can't it seems. Not about the price. Ultra is 2x max on same dice that's why you have 512GB on ultra and 256 on max. Architecture limitation like 128GB on Strix Halo
spaceman3000@reddit
Show me cheaper 512GB machine with that bandwidth. I'll buy it today
juggarjew@reddit
Because being able to make many smaller RAM system is better for profit vs one large RAM system.
You could probably make 4 x 128GB system instead of one 512 GB system. That moves more units, and the profit margin on all of them is likely the same, so moving 4 x units is better than moving 1 x unit.
ElementNumber6@reddit
Profit margin on a price hike of $5k is 100%. Add that to the fact they already drastically overcharge for added ram (better margins on the higher spec'd machines) and it's no contest.
spaceman3000@reddit
Show me cheaper 512GB machine with that bandwidth. I'll buy it today.
Mtolivepickle@reddit
Artificial scarcity drives price and demand. Over abundance of supply will delude brand quality over time. It’s the same principle why some luxury clothing brands burn unsold merchandise rather than sell it for a discount in foreign markets.
tecneeq@reddit
My guess is that they can't. Their contracts can't be expanded because there is no unused production capacity left. Everything has been bought up for years to come.
What they get will be used elsewhere, see the Apple Neo (which btw is sold out almost everywhere i hear).

enterprise_code_dev@reddit
I’ve noticed eBay is more lax than ever about what can be listed as the condition of the item also, calling something like a phone certified refurbished and 80% battery health is garbage. It’s hard to trust it much these days for anything.
bigh-aus@reddit
Ebay got terrible a long time ago unfortunately - when they put their cut up so much. I had an issue with UPS and a package from ebay - ebay were no help said "I can force a refund on the seller if you want to return the item" even though UPS was the one that damaged the item due to the woman smacking the sever onto the steps because she wasn't strong enough to lift it.

techdevjp@reddit
Report the item. eBay will take down items that get enough reports.
Any new seller gets funds held in reserve until items are delivered and marked as accepted by the buyer.
Buyer protection tends to work well unless you do something really dumb like send funds by BTC or bank transfer.
Scammers will still post scams, it is what they do. Being vigilant online is still required. These scammers prey on human nature and the desire for a great deal. Some people will throw caution to the wind if they think they're getting an insane enough deal.
txmail@reddit
As someone that dabbles in data science - I know 100% that there is a way to flag these accounts as soon as the post, and also easily stop the listing placement fraud. The thing is they just do not have enough reason not to. It will not affect their bottom line, in fact they would need to pull in someone like me with skills that will cost them money on top of the extra resources (compute) I would require to deploy those features.
From the line must go up stand point fixing this fraud would not help that line go any higher.
P1g1n@reddit
My theory: The low price scams aren't meant to be bought. They're there to drown out genuine low price deals which keeps the price of everything higher, benefitting both ebay and scalpers.
Lissanro@reddit
They are very much meant to be bought. And you may even receive an item that resamvles what shown on the photo.
I remember buying a fake card from ebay, it was many years ago. It had fake amount of VRAM and fake identifier (it was promised to be from 1xxx generation but actually was from 4xx). The seller kept offering me refunds on each of my complaints incrementally, starting from 20%, eventually they even offered 90% refund, but I still refused.
In the end, eBay itself gave me full refund from the seller since the seller never provided return address details even though kept promising to provide it to stall for time in the hope I give up (ebay required me to request return address). After all the years, the fake card is still used by one of the family members who does not need high-end GPU, and just uses the PC to browse the web ro watch videos.
But obviously there is always a risk that you don't get refund and end up with fake item. In this case, you are guaranteed to receive a fake Mac, and the seller will do anything to trick you to agree to a partial refund and get away with your money.
This is one way how these scams work. There are many variations, like selling only the box instead of the item and then claiming you bought just a box, or not shipping at all and give fake tracking number, or even shipping something entirely different that approximately matches expected weight in the hope you make mistake of accepting the package without hacking the content and open it without making a video where it is always in view (to have a proof that you did not replace the item yourself).
silenceimpaired@reddit
I had eBay require I send back a counterfeit movie to the seller instead of just destroying it. So even if a user gets their money back the seller still has the item to scam another day.
Lissanro@reddit
Yes, eBay required to return the item in my case too, but cost of shipping back was seller's responsibility and it was comparable to the real cost of the item, so they did not want to pay it and stalled for time until eventually eBay issued a refund. They did not ask me to destroy the item.
It is worth mentioning that eBay did not just gave me refund, I had multiple times ask for it and explain that the seller did not send their address. It was very complicated because the seller kept promising to send their address and to compensate shipping cost, to appear like they are following eBay requirements.
It took me few weeks from the moment of receiving the fake item to getting money back, and a lot of messages both to the seller and eBay.
sn2006gy@reddit
It's really just a scam that works on lazy people. They sell you something, ship an empty box with a cheap label and hope you don't dispute it or forget to dispute it as you wait for everything to flesh out in the system.
I really don't understand why eBay doesn't block it. But i guess enough transaction volume happens it covers their costs and then some.
1ncehost@reddit
I was going to say this. eBay's buyer protections are great ... If you use them. The scams are for old/young people, busy people, and low intelligence people. It wont work if you go through the proper channels.
Now buyer side ebay scams are a whole other story. Its a much worse situation. There is nothing you can do as a seller if you get scammed other than take the loss.
-dysangel-@reddit
I had a similar thing happen on Amazon before. Trying to buy an iPad Pro and they tried to pawn me off with the previous generation. I had no idea how they could stay in business if they made mistakes like that. But you just explained it - they must make enough profit off the scams to make the return costs worth it.
dgibbons0@reddit

No-Zookeepergame8837@reddit
Some are scams, but others aren't. It's difficult to moderate solely based on prices and new accounts, since new accounts obviously sell cheaply. Otherwise, why buy from them over another store with reviews? It's not uncommon for new stores to sell at zero profit or even at a slight loss. Personally, I think eBay should simply enforce the Trustee service for the first five or so sales, where the product is sent to them and then to the buyer. This eliminates the chance of scams, and although it adds a little to the price, it can still be much cheaper than established stores. In fact, that's how I've bought ridiculously cheap things, not exactly electronics, but in other "high-risk" sectors. For example, I bought a relatively expensive lot of TCG cards, which individually would have been worth over 400€, since several cards cost around 50€ each, and yet it only cost me 73€ in total.
