Does anyone else think Data looks 100 times better in a red uniform?

I was watching the blurays, and they have some screen texts with Data in different uniforms. The red at least in my opinion looks 100 times better.
FullConsideration377@reddit
Why was Diana allowed to wear whatever she wanted but nobody else could?
Mental-Street6665@reddit
I feel gold matches his design better. It always threw me seeing him in red. Same with Worf, although the design of the red uniforms on DS9 made it less jarring.
Virtual_Vast1450@reddit
Yes and my response to anyone who who disagrees is “ no, you can’t!’. Don’t even try!”
l33774rd@reddit
Yes & no. The red complements his skin tone better but he's not Data in anything but yellow.
Peas-Of-Wrath@reddit
Maybe he should wear the uniform of his people. 😆
georage@reddit
We are not yet at the point of complete societal failure where I feel comfortable publicly sharing my views on how good robots look
Peas-Of-Wrath@reddit
Gigalo Joe disagrees 😆
Overpass_Dratini@reddit
He is an android, not a robot.
georage@reddit
All androids are robots.
PauseAffectionate720@reddit
Oh, yes we are.
ResplendentShade@reddit
Everybody looks better in a red uniform.
Mister_Mojo78@reddit
Yeah, until they die. But that's mainly tos lol
Peas-Of-Wrath@reddit
Yeah in TNG it’s just the new person who you haven’t seen before that is marked for death. 😆
TeikaDunmora@reddit
It makes him look extra pale, like a vampire. All he needs is fangs and a cape.
Peas-Of-Wrath@reddit
Haha as I read this I envisioned Data looking perplexed and then suddenly getting it.

So is it a change in Spiner's posture that carries his demand for command?

Maybe if he grew a beard?

And what if he strokes the beard, thusly?

I think he looks even better in some of the civilian “alien” outfits he wears.

The gold uniform washes out his skin tone.

💯 agree

I agree. But I still like the gold more. It brings out his eyes.

I like the gold but I cant explain why
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
Because it's all we've seen him in? I'm just spitballing here.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
There are a couple where he's in red. Screenshot in OP is an example.
Ralph--Hinkley@reddit
Right, but I was referring to when we see him in the series. I think he wears red in one version of Yesterday's, but other than that, we only see him in gold.

lol over the years I’ve grown to most appreciate gold on everyone, it’s the working man’s colour haha.
Cuneglasus@reddit
I think the red clashes with his skin tone.
Liveranonions@reddit
IIRC he was originally going to have a red uniform and this is why they changed it.
Victory_Highway@reddit
Actually, he was screen tested in a blue uniform and it didn’t look good, so they switched him to the gold uniform.
fluxxis@reddit
He looks too pale due to the darker tone of the uniform.
LegoRobinHood@reddit
His skin tone clashes with his skin tone, but we don't mind.
TheCh0rt@reddit
The tone clashes with the skin, the red puts it in the basket again
Rustie_J@reddit
Nah, it highlights the yellow tones in his skin. The red washes them out & makes him look crayon white. Which would be fine if that had been what they were going for, but if they want his skin to look yellow, he can't be wearing red.
TheWhiteWolf1970@reddit
Nobody looked good in the mustard unis.
SlapfuckMcGee@reddit
I think the red contrasts the skin tone too much and it’s not great.
Have one of him in science blue?
GGuts@reddit
Or in one of Troi's outfits?
SlapfuckMcGee@reddit
Yeah, we need a good shot of Data’s gams
Fortytwopoint2@reddit
I never understood why he didn't wear blue. He was the science officer. Ok, he was the ops officer, hence the gold, but he was also the de facto science officer. Which is weird on a ship of 800 crew, surely two roles should have two officers. Same with Worf, tbh, why was the head of security also the tactical bridge officer? You can't be firing torpedos at a warship while repelling boarders!
SwoleJunkie1@reddit
The science blue don’t look good in screen test apparently, so they made him wear yellow and then said “he’s head of ops” to hand waive that explanation.
shakebakelizard@reddit
Well Chekov was tactical and security at the same time too so there is precedent for that.
Darkling183@reddit
Data never wore science blue on the show. This photo is from Chain of Command part 2, in which Data was promoted to first officer when Riker was relieved of duty.
SlapfuckMcGee@reddit
Yeah, I didn’t think he did. But I don’t have the Blu-ray’s and OP said there were uniform screen tests, so was hoping for a screen cap.
Darkling183@reddit
In the season 1 Blu-Ray extras, there are screen tests for Brent's makeup (eg this one), but he's wearing the gold uniform in all of them.
In the season 3 extras, there's some test footage of him on the set of The Ensigns of Command wearing what appears to be a prototype for the new season 3 uniform (it has separate jacket and trousers, but still opens at the front), but in red for some reason.
SlapfuckMcGee@reddit
Thanks for posting these! And that red really doesn’t work with his make-up. Kinda like the weird uniform though. It would probably look better had we seen one properly tailored to him. I like it better than the aborted Generations uniforms.
Darkling183@reddit
I think you're right - the red uniform was probably meant for someone else (maybe Patrick), but the wardrobe department really needed to see how this option looked on screen. The Ensigns of Command was the first episode produced for season 3, so presumably Brent was the only cast member present to do a screen test on the day.
Darkling183@reddit
The screen tests on the Blu-Rays are for Data's makeup, not his uniform. At one point he was going to be battleship grey. In this one, he's more pinkish and they haven't settled on his contacts yet.

shakebakelizard@reddit
I didn't really understand why that was necessary, since he wore his regular yellow uniform in Redemption and Gambit.
Darkling183@reddit
Jellico prefers a certain formality on the bridge. In other words, he's an asshat.
viewkachoo@reddit
There we go. 😋
man_vs_cube@reddit
Ok he actually looks great in the blue.
SlapfuckMcGee@reddit
Thanks for doing that. I think the blue definitely works better than the red, tough call if it works better than the gold. But the first contact - nemesis woolen uniforms with the blue shoulder definitely looked good with his make-up, the cinematic lighting was probably doing the heavy lifting.
viewkachoo@reddit
I just had to do it. I didn’t think I was going to like it as much as I do. But blue is my favorite color. Doctor Crusher with that blue robe is my favorite outfit in the whole series.

Crusher in the satin nightgown in Sub Rosa is my favorite outfit

Lore begs to differ
FrostyMirror6162@reddit
Lore wearing Pakled clothing did not help him out.
abibofile@reddit
I lost it when I realized he never stopped wearing Pakled uniform after the episode where they kidnap him. Never noticed as a kid watching the show. Only picked up on it re-watching as an adult many years later.
In the rare occasions Data wears civvies, he always goes with that drab colonist gear. Neither brother seems to care much for fashion.

KelseyOpso@reddit
No.
PomegranateFair3973@reddit
About as much as I think Troi looks better in uniform, period. Say what else you will about Jelico, he was correct about that!
mikefrombarto@reddit
I’ve had far worse leaders than Jelico. He did nothing wrong in my eyes.
PomegranateFair3973@reddit
I don't feel he did anything wrong on TNG, and in fact Riker came off looking like the asshole being a whiny man baby for ignoring his captain's orders for no better reason than, "I don't wanna."
But Jelico did go down in my opinion for turning into a Badmiral on Prodigy...
Imma_da_PP@reddit
I like the contrast better but also, how could this guy not get promoted to Commander already?
AntimatterTachyon@reddit
Everyone looks better in the red
Marvelboy1974@reddit
I can’t believe he was never promoted
Late-Yogurtcloset-57@reddit
Neither can Harry Kim.
fishyofpain@reddit
The red uniform he wears in Chain of Command looks baggier on him than his gold and idk if that was intentional or a result of him wearing one that hadn’t been fitted just for him… but either way said bagginess makes the red uniform look inherently worse on him. That and I prefer the early seasons’ less saturated red to the more intense red of 3-7.
Late-Yogurtcloset-57@reddit
The replicators were being buggy, so he wore Riker's uniform since Riker wasn't wearing it anyway. Lol
legotheoffice@reddit
Ngl I enjoyed seeing Data in command red. Gold is iconic Data, but I did think the red was really cool to see (it felt like progress) & was a bit disappointed when he switched back when I was a kid.
_R_A_@reddit
Everyone did.
twoneedlez@reddit
I always thought that he should have the third pip. He was second-in-command, Chain of Command shows he passed the command test so he should not be outranked by Troi (who didn’t pass the command test until 7th season) & Crusher.
cubosh@reddit
data is beautiful in every color - r/MisterDataIsBeautiful
robot_heart420@reddit
The gold matches his eyes. Seeing Data with blue eyes in that one episode perturbed me.
RedeyeSPR@reddit
Geordi looks great in the yellow by contrast. Pale white guys look awful in yellow and orange. Find a middle eastern dude with nice rich brown skin and they’ll look amazing in orange and yellow.
dnkroz3d@reddit
"Old Yellow Eyes" needs "old yellow uniform".
Frymanstbf@reddit
I literally rewatched this last night. When Jellico relieved Riker of duty, I said out loud to my wife "Here comes weird looking Data in red." Lol.
PauseAffectionate720@reddit
Brent Spiner is blushing while reading this.
AmeliaNeek@reddit
Nah.
evanweb546@reddit
Nobody's skin-tone looks good in mustard yellow.
Kahnza@reddit
It makes him look more aggressive and sinister 🙁
dlrich12@reddit
Data should have been command. But red and his skin does not look good
Chewblacka_@reddit
Binge watched TNG, after not watching for decades, a few years ago. The whole thing watching 2 or so episodes a day walking on the treadmill.
What I had forgotten was how good Brent Spiner was in this show. His acting was excellent. I really wonder why you never saw him in anything else after this
Bushido_Seppuku@reddit
Ew. Ew. Ew. googles tng data Aaaaah. Don't do that to me again!
risemix@reddit
In fashion, conventional wisdom is that pale folks look best in jewel tones like Red, Royal Blue, and Emerald Green, and paler colors like yellow, orange, pastels, etc. wash pale skin tones out. Data is no exception.
s73v3m4nn@reddit
Hmmm... I don't know. Maybe 77.5 times

Data was about to be promoted to XO and full Commander in Nemesis when Riker transferred to the Titan so I got curious what he'd have looked like in TNG movie era unis.
Here it is.
I feel like it's less jarring that the series era unis because there's less red overall.

VanTaxGoddess@reddit
Red uniform? Because he's Ready to command!
PainKiller7777@reddit
Kinda links Data the vampire helper to the Evil Dick Tater Captain...
Darkling183@reddit
I'm pretty sure his skin tone was chosen to complement the gold operations uniform that Data wears. I don't think it works as well with the red command uniform. There's too much contrast (in my opinion).
guygizmo@reddit
The way I heard it, he was originally supposed to wear a blue uniform and be the science officer, but they changed it because they thought he looked better in gold.
Choice_Chocolate5866@reddit
yeah, his makeup was terrible on the gold.
MAJORMETAL84@reddit
Red is a great contrast against his gold skin and eyes.
TreeHedger@reddit
I think 3 full pips would've made the gold or the red uniform pop a little more.
Johnny_Strawhat@reddit
Maybe. I’ll tell you one thing though; he looks great in the Captain’s Chair.
Emergency-Gazelle954@reddit
Please state the nature of the command emergency.
commodoretom@reddit
I thought Worf looked badass in red with season 7 "Parallels" and his silver. Rather than the gold sash with red in season 1.
PhysicsEagle@reddit
Red seems more dignified
Odd_Order_4217@reddit
I like the red on him but I'm biased towards the yellow cause it's familiar
Potential_Help_5032@reddit
No. He looks horrible.
Torlek1@reddit
It wouldn't have worked in the earlier seasons.
This is Season 6 already.
Would it have been OK for Data to wear command red from Chain of Command all the way to Nemesis and Picard?
johnklapak@reddit

integr8shunR@reddit
I liked the contrast.
Original_Scholar_272@reddit
He would have looked great in science blue, too. Either better than the yellow.

Probably, but I am not among them

On top of looks, he should be a ship's captain. So it just looks right.
