I mean, accent is very hard. You can improve your vocabulary, grammar etc, but unless you got here super young, it really never goes away, even 30, 40 years later.
No, absolutely not true (not about Arnold’s accent—that I have no idea about). People usually don’t lose their original accents if they learn a new language after a brief pre-adolescent period. This is a known phenomenon. I have absolutely no sympathy for the woman and who she associates with but the fact is the fact.
Accents absolutely do fade over time though, they just fade more slowly the older a person is when they remove themselves from their mother tongue.
I personally know a bunch of German and English people who moved to the U.S. at various stages of their lives (some well into adulthood). And every single one of them lost some or all of their accent over time. The only people I’ve never heard lose any of their accent (if they speak English at all) were older immigrants.
Arnold came over at 21, and barely spoke any English at all. I didn’t know this until fact checking myself just now, but by now his accent is very faint when talking casually and he has to kind of embellish it when speaking publicly or acting. And early on he actually hired a coach to try and lose the accent faster, before he realized it was sort of a signature feature of his and decided to instead try and keep it.
Fun fact about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s mother tongue. Arnold grew up in rural Austria speaking Austrian German. After becoming famous from starring in the movie The Terminator, his movies were released to international audiences. Because of Arnold’s dialect of German, they had to release his movies dubbed over in German by a different voice actor, because Arnold’s dialect of German is akin to a strong American southern accent in English, and the German speaking audiences could not take his accent seriously.
I didn’t know that lol. I did know his accent was outrageous even by German (and some Austrian) standards, but I didn’t know they had to dub over him lol.
What really should be wild to you is your own inability/unwillingness to accept or at least self-verify what is easily self-verifiable if not self-evident. Like, seriously, what is it about this reality is so unfathomable and/or threatening to your ignorance that you have to make a clown out of yourself to challenge?
You do know that nothing in that study proves you're right, right? Accents change heavily over time when exposed to other accents and languages. People unconsciously mimic others to fit in, it's part of our tribal instincts.
No, foreigners don't often end up with perfect American accents after 30 years unless they really try but nobody here is saying that. Foreigners do end up with an Americanized version of their own accent, which is why Arnold literally has an accent coach to keep his Austrian accent. Every foreigner can attest to this (and gets laughed at when they visit their family in their home country for their "American" accent). It's called phonetic convergence.
But since you like linking studies, here's one (although I doubt you'll read this either): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0095447021000851
No, foreigners don't often end up with perfect American accents after 30 years unless they really try but nobody here is saying that.
What's being said here is that Melania's accent still sounds so thick because she's likely not talking in English much.
Oh, would you look at that! All the yapping and insufferable contrarianism only for you to actually concede literally the only point I was making.

So you’re basically here proverbially pushing up your glasses with a smug smile on your face to say… technically accents can slightly soften to the accent of the person’s new environment to a limited extent—all because I didn’t literally specify in boldfaced, capital letters that people don’t tend to lose their accents “*EXCEPT TO A SMALL EXTENT”. I’m sure if I hadn’t said that people “usually” don’t lose their accents, your insufferable “ackshually” ass would’ve pounced on that, too.
Damn, prof. Way to break it to me the super mind-blowing concept that most people who immerse into a new linguistic environment will have at least some, rather than literally zero, change in their speech. Way to show me on a fucking annoying, pedantic nitpick. This definitely is all about your brilliant intelligence and isn’t about you being argumentative for no reason other than to needlessly show off.
But since you like linking studies, here's one (although I doubt you'll read this either): https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0095447021000851
As I suspected, all that this article supports your contention with me on is the absolute bonkers idea… that people learning a new language don’t literally experience zero impact on their speech, including accent. Congratulations again. You can’t make this shit up, lol.
And did you really think you looked smart with that comment? It's very cringe lol
I’m not the one trying to look smart by trying to start an argument over a distinction that is literally pointless when you know damn well what is being meant without being so damn difficult. That you even bring this up tells me you suffer from a very serious perception issue lmao.
I was born in a place with a very pronounced accent, moved in my early 20s to a whole other place with a totally different language, took 5 years or so to get fluent in that language, and lost 60% of my original accent in the process, which applies to my accent in both of my fluent languages.
Fair enough. Because someone on this thread is being a pedantic ass about it, I’ll state the disclaimer that of course learning a new language after puberty can still impart some degree of accent synchronization, but it’s a spectrum and the greater that degree / the innate accent talent, the rarer. For most people, they’re never going to sound fully native, though.
For my part at least, I actually find it pretty depressing what's happened to me. I lost this innate thing that linked me to my homeland, and now I sound like a foreigner there too.
I never said his accent is gone though lol. In fact, I agree, it has faded some because that’s what living in America for over half a century does to a mofo, and he does lean into it when acting or speaking.
“Straight up spreading disinformation” then just agrees with me. Insane intro homie lol.
It's even weirder because almost everyone in Slovenia can speak fluent english, so it's insane how she managed to remain that uneducated after decades in America
Always blows my mind how the "immigration is ruining America " crowd worships a deity who has a Euroghoul for a wife. One who speaks english as well as a subway employee.
I complain about mass immigration tyvm. Also h1b visas being used to replace American workers. Cant find a candidate in the most college educated work force in American history but luckily Indian nationals are available. Fuck off.
Just a side effect of capitalism. Expecting corporations to think of the American man and lend a hand is communism. Naturally in the spirit of capitalism, theyll ignore the qualms of the average American and bring the most qualified individuals abroad to work for them.
Seemingly have to repeat this statement every time this rhetoric pops up:
If you have a high enough education, replace the 30% of neurosurgeons in the UK who happen to be Indian. If you have no education, replace the Mexicans picking your fruit in America.
If you're a neet, pls sit down and be quiet while the adults are talking.
For like a month I think but it was a complicated situation where her work visa wasn’t supposed to arrive for another week and she had already been here for a while
Yeah for a bit but they don’t care because she’s white (even though Slovenia was under Austria-Hungary and those are the kinda people that’d make White settlers pearl clutch in the 1800s)
I think by and large there's a small minority of his supporters who actually thing 'immigration is ruining America', by far and away, most are fine with immigration, just not mass, uncontrolled migration - you know, there's this idea that when accepting migrants, it's best to be picky about who you accept.
It’s shortsighted. People see mass migration and think “duhh I don’t like that. Stop.”
All our politicians are using immigration to solve problems they create. Wages are kept at rock bottom while cost of living skyrocket. The poors don’t want to work 80 hours a week to barely subsist in a shack with 12 family members. Educated Americans see the Europe model and want work life balance.
Luckily, you have immigrants willing to live like shit compared to their skill set and work 80 hours a week. We don’t need them. It’s just a way to keep wages low, exploit us and keep the machine moving.
Any non regarded American should see how absurd it is to import highly educated workers on masse when we have millions of highly educated workers unable to find work in their field.
