Someone shot my house last night, what’s this caliber look like?

Substantial-Term3334@reddit
That piece of metal it went through looks very thin and, judging by the damage at its end, fairly soft. That board looks like pine. A .45 or 9mm that could only manage that penetration was not going very fast any more. And certainly not fast enough to cause that much deformation to the nose of the bullet. Are bullet fragments apparent in some other part of your house that it hit? Absent some other damage that is not pictured here then this bullet had already struck something else before, in bullet term, limping its way to your house by chance.

probably a 45

From the profile, .45 or .40. The base is intact an circular, measure it.
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
Round nose.
.45
Penguin_Life_Now@reddit
Yeah, my gut feeling looking at it is .45ACP, but I would not want to bet much money on that.
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
Round nose is .45
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
It’s a .45
animefan1520@reddit
It can be because the house is still standing

Good ole manstopper. 45 acp

Why isn't anyone wondering WHY a bullet was fired into his house?
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Active neighborhood, usually they’re just flying through the air
EugeneNicoNicoNii@reddit
So if I am getting it right, people are having fire fights in your neighborhood regularly
And you can just randomly catch stray rounds just walking down the street at night or just sitting near the window?
Slippi_Fist@reddit
'active area' meaning bullets flying through the air on the regular?

xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
I carry myself and my home is protected.
Basically the first few months we lived here I open carried while cutting the grass and made sure to call the cops about every single little thing.
Sucks being a “bad neighbor” but my wife and I were stuck here with a baby.
I’d rather people think I call the cops a lot than have this shit DIRECTLY in front of my house.
Slippi_Fist@reddit
I follow along here because I'm interested in firearms, their history and technology. I have some use cases.
I live overseas in a rural setting, with license to hold firearms - but I only pull them out for sport or vermin.
I hear shots in the distance on the regular, because farming. never, hopefully, will one travel through my property.
Yeah my guns can protect me and my family, and I can safely store them and access them for that purpose.
I think it will always be foreign to me, the idea of angry shooting taking place nearby so regularly just turns me off.
Not making a point here other than you have big stones my friend. Bigger than mine, that is for sure. Stay safe and sound.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
It’s gotta be a desensitized thing.
Like if I heard them only as often as you, I’d probably be more concerned because someone must be shooting for good reason
In my neighborhood, southeast US, if I call about this, I was extremely surprised an officer showed up. Dispatch usually just asks “so what do you want us to do?” In cases like this
Slippi_Fist@reddit
I've visited your fair isles a few times, and know what real americans are like - not the characature many determine from the stereotype catalogue to judge events witin USA. While I dont have the sense of urgency to protect my people and stuff with firearms - I would use mine for that purpose as required.
Yeah - while I hear shots its the context isn't it. I guess when I heard one this morning I thought "someones filling their freezer with a beast today". Farmers will be hunting vermin way more frequently than me - lots of big native forest containing tracts of lands in these farms - dairy mainly - meaning deer hunting is a thing. Duck hunting is a thing, and so on. Skeet shooting fills in the rest. I hear a shot and associate it with food mostly (wont hear most vermin shots like .22 or air rifle). So makes me hungry lol
Gun culture is a thing isn't it - whether it is is built up from the ground through revenance, respect, safety and so on: its a generally constructive tool with personal protection built in. Versus if that culture is built up from grabbing a gun to wave around at the car meet next week "because Jason decided to wave his glock around after I thrashed his shitty Neon in the street race".
Cops can't police a culture of 'its normal' to pop off a few rounds in a public setting, or close to public settings. I feel sorry for responders who somehow get that burden placed on them, as if something they can do can stop dickheads being dickheads ahead of time.
Community can only change the culture, and if you leave - then the community shrinks. To stay takes those stones was what I was poking at, kudos to you.

Omg ?? Are you all ok?? Children afraid?? Man this is crazy has to be solved and stoped ...good luck
PlaceUserNameHere67@reddit
Depending on where you live, I'd be inclined to say 9mm do to it's prevalence in popularity. If you're more in the woods, prob a .45 cal. What time of night did it happen?? Possibly drunk kids with pistol being idiots??
Penguin_Life_Now@reddit
Its hard to say without some size reference, but one thing I can say is that it likely came from a long distance if it had that little penetration.
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
It’s a .45.
It’s shaped and proportioned like a .45.
Penguin_Life_Now@reddit
That's my gut feeling too, but I would not want to say that with any real certainty
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
I would say it in court.
uponone@reddit
I agree. Too fat for a 9.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Cops estimate from about a street down, hard to describe. 8-9 houses away down a little hill.
Gunsensual@reddit
Since you have two holes, just check the angle in came down on. If it's horizontal, it was shot at your house. If it's 45 degrees it came from a few hundred yards away.
Only getting through 2 little pieces of wood, poor little thing didn't have much left in him.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Gunfight between two different firearms.
Rec4LMS@reddit
Oh those naughty firearms, always shooting things up while unattended.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
I would have phrased it differently but literally every person on the sub who would read that already knows that firearms don’t fight themselves so it seemed pointless to use lot word when few word do trick
ZeroDaySubber@reddit
Sig might prove you wrong lol
BlueOrb07@reddit
Caliber is % of an inch, so 45 caliber is 0.45 of an inch. 9mm is metric obviously. Get a tape measure and measure the back of the round where it’s not damaged.
44Revolver1908@reddit
9MM is .355
redditguy135@reddit
Measure the slug with calipers. That will help you get a better idea. Also weigh it in grains.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Cops already evidenced and took it.
BordFree@reddit
You could measure the hole in the awning from the back side. Looks like a pretty clean hole and won't be that much bigger than the bullet itself
FafnerTheBear@reddit
You can still measure the hole to get a rough estimate. Caliber in this context is just the bullett diameter in inches. .45 Caliber is .45 inches. 9mm is....well 9mm. Etc.
buffilosoljah42o@reddit
Measure that hole
redditguy135@reddit
Hopefully it will lead to a conviction. Glad you're ok. Stay safe out there.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
lol what’s funny is my neighborhood is super active and I didn’t even expect them to show up but my wife was pissed and basically forced me to call the non emergency line and they actually showed up with their boss who was investigating it related to something else

Measure it. Looks like a 45 as the entire comment section has already stated.

Go further. You know you want to CSI this shit. Red yarn with sticks for terminal angle, density of object hit, joules of E at impact after ballistic calculations, probable initial velocities of common barrel lengths, that night's prevailing winds, humidity & air pressure, correlate ring cameras registering "pops' and varying loudness to estimate distance to firing, get accurate surveyed topo maps of the neighborhood to find the likely area by factoring in ballistic arc with velocity dependent decreasing air resistance (get ready for calculus), check cell geolocated data, with time cross referenced. Then create a kick ass computer simulation for the interrogation room, come up with a slick one liner pun for when the perp is caught & cornered. Whip off sunglasses at an appropriate time. David Caruso it 😎

Using the nippers as size reference. I’m gonna say .45 as well. Likely ACP.
Distinct_Arrival_445@reddit
Watch it be from the only person that bought a gun chambered in GAP.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
I didn’t get out my 9mm ammo to compare and the cop just asked me to yank it out and drop it in the bag.
Nippers made it look big but it looked big to begin with which is why I grabbed the nippers, ya know?
PanzerFauzt@reddit
it may be a 9, 380, 40 cal 45 or 10mm.
ShakeZula30or40@reddit
Not sure, need a banana for scale.
Veteran_PA-C@reddit
Oof. Use calipers. Unfortunately handling it with metal tools will make it harder to match to a gun.
assistant_managers@reddit
Fun fact, there's no such thing as matching a bullet to the gun. It's used as circumstantial evidence ie "this 9mm projectile was fired from a gun of a similar type as what the suspect was apprehended while possessing".
If you fired handed a forensic expert 10 Glock 19s, 10 Glock 17s and a slug from each gun, they would be unable to match the slugs to the guns that fired them or even the models. Moreover, any claims they made about them would be taken with a grain of salt by a court.
Underwater_Karma@reddit
I wouldn't hold out hope that the local PD is going to kick off a CSI firearm forensics investigation over this.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Buddy the cop said he lost his pliers and asked me to take it out 😭😭
Veteran_PA-C@reddit
I’m not expecting you to know better, but I would expect the cop to know better.
joelfarris@reddit
At least OP didn't use channellocks, or even worse, vicegrips.
It might be a bit squished on the back edge, but hey, there's only one groove line, in the opposite direction of the rifling...
Seversaurus@reddit
I concur with other commenters that's it appears to be .45 acp which would explain why it didn't have to go far for it to lose enough energy to not bury itself deeper.
DKCustomCoatings@reddit
I would've asked the local PD to take that out.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
They didn’t have their pliers and asked me to do it 🙄
Isthisnametakenalso@reddit
9mm
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Looks fat.
M00seNuts@reddit
So does your mom, but we don't judge her.
It looks like a .45 ACP to me. It would help a lot if you measured the diameter.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Cops had to roll my mom off it but they took it for evidence already.
M00seNuts@reddit
LOL.
I'm coming up with about 8.875 bullet bases across. The nominal width of a 4x4 is actually 3.5 inches. 4/8.875 is about .4.
Now, the bullet is at an angle in this picture, so the base should actually be wider than what we've measured.
It's from a .45ACP.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
Thanks M00seNuts, doing the lords work
Fuckin_Hipster@reddit
No.
Reditlurkeractual@reddit
I don’t think it’s a .45 ACP I think it’s a .40 s&w
Ok_Ordinary6694@reddit
Likely .45. .40 is a smidge longer.

trucknutz36582@reddit
.45 hollow point… maybe?
A little short’n’ fat for a 9mm.
CrazyPsychoB@reddit
The back doesn’t look deformed at all so measure the diameter. If it’s close to 11/32 it’s a 9mm. If it’s close to 13/32 it’s a .40 and if it’s close to 7/16 it’s a .45.
Valandris@reddit
Definitely a pistol bullet. Hard to gauge size from photo.
xx0nbr0k3n_@reddit (OP)
