What is your opinion about Slovakia?

The girls there were playing love games but I will lie if I say I don't miss living there. It was almost like living in the Balkans in some way, in others very different. The worst thing was how far it was from the sea. The best that it's safer than Western Europe and cleaner than the Balkans.
After the horrors of living in the Netherlands and UK it was like a land of respite. That said the cities and towns are usually commie and drab, not as pretty as the ones in the Czech Republic. It was definitely easier to make friends in Bratislava than in Sofia. Also teachers there seemed nicer than the bad teachers you usually find in Sofia.
If I knew this I would've insisted that my parents move us to Slovakia for school when I was a kid. I would've saved me lots of trouble.
I used to think Bratislava is an ugly city but this year I visited Varna properly and, well, aside from the sea, which is always amazing Varna is far uglier. It's just that Bratislava has few old parts, it's mostly Modernism.
The place and culture is slightly melancholic if I have to use just one word, the sounding of this song is basically how Slovakia feels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lrE02NQ2SI
What do you know or think about Slovakia?

I liked Bratislava a lot although it feels pretty dead city with many cafes closing at 6 pm meaning they already stop serving at around 5:30 pm. Also restaurants are mainly open by 9 pm meaning you have to arrive by 8 at latest. In the evening there is lack of decent places for Food and drink and conversation. It is mainly fast Foods or loud bars.
In general city is asleep after 6 pm. Bypassers are rare while shops and public transport are completely empty.

Mostly negative
DifficultWill4@reddit
Why?
Slovakia and Slovaks are more similar to us than any of the Balkan countries with the exception of Croatia. Bratislava quite literally feels like you are walking through Maribor or Celje
floare_salbatica@reddit
Not to mention that you see "slovensko" on so many institution buildings and think you might be tripping. I had to double check when I took a day trip from Brno to Bratislava. And I was like: no, I did wake up very early, but I'm pretty sure that I'm in Slovakia, not Slovenia, what's up with all this slovensko love? 😅
DifficultWill4@reddit
Indeed. The official name of Slovakia “Slovenská republika” also means “Slovene republic” in Slovene
Happy-Hour88@reddit (OP)
How do you feel about them calling your country Slovinsko and Slovinská republika?
DifficultWill4@reddit
They probably spent too much time hanging out with the Americans and their “Slovinia”
Happy-Hour88@reddit (OP)
Basically both nations named their countries "Land of the Slavic people". Slovakia comes from the Slovak native name for a male person from the country "slovak", while Slovensko/Slovenska comes from the word for a female person "slovenka".
BTW Slovenia is called Slovinsko in Slovak, note the "i".

When I visited Maribor I was like "this is like Slovakia only there's burek and Italian dishes in the supermarket".

I lived 10 years in Bratislava, and I consider it my second home 🤎

I literally broke down crying on the bus when I was leaving.
Savings_Dragonfly806@reddit
It's a country for sure

I love east Slovakia. People there don't drink anything below 50%. And I'm not kidding, even normal imported rakija is 50% in shops!
NoEatBatman@reddit
Oh, so it's not just Hungary and Transilvania, so now i know of 3 regions that think anything below 50 is just piss-water 😅😅
Happy-Hour88@reddit (OP)
They have Borovička there. Good to try.

I am going to Bratislava very soon for the first time, I imagine it to be just like Novi Sad.
I have a positive view of slovaks, in Serbia they are known for naive art paintings which are very beautiful. They seem like a chill nation, nobody has beef with them except ofcourse the Magyars!
Mysterious-Put1459@reddit
Bratislava's old town has a very pleasant Central European vibe without the massive crowds. The local cuisine was something I still remember to this day. You feel you are in Czechia and Hungary at the same time.
SituationRoyal6535@reddit
Been there twice. Great skiing. Magnificent Tatra mountains. Can't say much about people because I kept mostly to myself, but those I dealt with were friendly and open.
Difficult-Routine929@reddit
From what I can see, they don't like Hungarians very much. I used to think Romania was the main enemy of the Hungarians, but Slovakia is also one. Their current relationship isn't too bad, but the Beneš decrees are very controversial, and from what I understand, Hungarian nationalists are belittling Slovaks by saying they have no history. Slovak far-right leader Jan Slota called Hungarians the "tumor of Slovakia," and the party he led came in third in the 2006 elections in Slovakia. If you ask why I'm so knowledgeable, it's because I love researching nations that don't particularly like each other. It's not something I'm proud of, but it's entertaining.
zasumasisavse@reddit
Quite insightfull, thank you. Any other examples you find interesting?
Difficult-Routine929@reddit
There are many other examples; many nations that hate each other, either in Asia or Africa, and that bores me. It's important to me that it's in Europe.

That picture makes me want to visit. Otherwise, I don't know much about it.
