As someone who just bought a 2 series, I think a major problem with the Supra is the 2 series.
The supra gains nothing over the 2 series really. It’s not cheaper, it’s not more luxurious, it’s only marginally smaller (and you lost the rear seat).
CloudsTasteGeometric@reddit
I disagree. But you need to get behind the wheel of both to feel it.
The MKV feels a LOT smaller, lighter, and more nimble than a 2 Series. Even if it isn’t feather light like a Miata it’s still 400lbs lighter, sits and rides lower, and is practically front mid engine - seating the driver much further back (near on the rear axle.)
The 2 Series is brilliant! Very good on paper next to the MKV, and definitely more practical. But the experience behind the wheel of the MKV is so much more raw and sports car like. As great as the 2 Series is, you can feel how compromised it is by its added weight and rear seats next to the nimble MKV.
narwhal_breeder@reddit
The 240i series is a better daily sure, the Supra is a much better sports car. It’s 400lbs lighter - available with a stick, and have a really really really well setup suspension. You can genuinely bully Caymans at a track day. Thats just not happening with the m240.
If all I was doing was flat landing Texas/Florida 240i all the way.
ImBiginKorea@reddit
I wish the m240 had a stick. The M2 was just too much, but I still dream of a purple 2 series.
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
BMWs manuals suck anyway outside the z4 which is the one Toyota reworked.
I wasnt really looking for a manual but I test drove a f87 m2 and its inputs were worse than my fk8 type r.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
Comparing a Honda to a BMW is crazy. Honda has historically had some of the best manuals on the market next to the Miata and Porsche. BMW has always felt like stirring a bucket of rubber bands with a stick. You can improve them in the aftermarket but you can also improve Honda's shifters.
Llew19@reddit
Aha downvoted for telling the truth
The Civic type R and the Mégane RS I have at the moment are miles ahead in terms of engagement and calibration. The only thing I'd change is for the engine note of the RS3 5 cylinder engine!
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
I was specifically looking for a less raw and more comfortable car and thats why I choose a bmw in the first place. Its a great daily that happens to have a lot of performance but not a raw driving experience
Raw driving cars are not great to live with on a day to day basis.
Uptons_BJs@reddit
Yeah but the Supra in the article is $71k, the M2 starts at $69k.
Get an M2 and you’d bully Supras around the track too
upnorth2@reddit
The Final Edition does have some minor tweaks to suspension and brakes but I would wager the base trim performs very close to it and can be had for only ~$60k.
Savagegeese ran a track test in 2023 and the Supra edged out the M2 without these improvements, with them I imagine the gap widens slightly in the Supra's favor.
At this price point a $2k gap is not a deciding factor for most and performance is so close it comes down to preference, they are both really great cars.
bullyXLdisrespector@reddit
It might not gain anything, but it loses 400lbs. If you actually want a sports car, it's a no-brainer...
uberdosage@reddit
It is SIGNIFICANTLY smaller. 10 inch shorter wheelbase, almost 500 pounds lighter, sits 5 inches lower. They are incomparable of you want a sports car.
IronCookaroo@reddit
I cross shopped the Supra, m240i, and M2. Supra ended up being the sweet spot of power, engagement, toss-ability, and pricing. If only the m240i had a stick ☹️. M2 was just in a totally different price range. I managed to snag my Supra at MSRP, so obviously that's a huge factor.
ohehlo@reddit
My 2019 m240i has a stick and the b58. That was the sweet spot before they redesigned it and dropped the manual. You could even get it in a convertible with a stick.
FreewayPineapple@reddit
Manual
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
Well the current gen 2 series is ugly as hell. IMO.
mattcube64@reddit
I got a ‘23 manual with Premium Package for like $61k OTD.
IMO, that’s one of the best deals in cars in the last few years.
Once you start knocking on $70-$75k+, it’s hard not to consider other options.
CloudsTasteGeometric@reddit
Totally. I got my ‘22 Premium Auto for $48k and it’s the finest car I’ve ever owned. And for the right buyer, and added $10k is fair just to get the stick.
The MKV is just that good. It’s wily, but composed. An utterly distinct rocket of a car.
But if I had $70k+ to spend I’d be looking at a Porsche or C8. As incredible as it is, it doesn’t make sense at that price.
juanever@reddit
Yeah i got my 24 manual premium for 61k otd aswell. Great car imo. gr86 is still one of my favorites though. Had a Mustang before too but was is okay. i loved driving my gr86 the most. Doing small little drifts and pushing the car for every ounce of power it had.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
What a dumb way to start the article.
There isn't a new Supra for sale within 150 miles of me. I bump it up to 250 miles and there are six. 350 miles to get one in red.
The cars are low sales because only a very small number are made.
Main_Hornet8676@reddit
Yeah, most Supras in my area are already sold before they even hit the lots.
unsaltedbutter@reddit
I bought one in Jan, been waiting for it to warm up so I can drive it! It's in the shop getting ppf'd right now.
1nconspicious@reddit
I feel Toyota should have built it to be a Nissan GTR competitor instead of a Z competitor.
Richandler@reddit
It just doesn't have the same vibe as the old one. It's feels like it's wants to be a super miata rather than it's own thing, at least visually.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Not a single mention of the price till the end, the final edition was $71k minimum if you could actually find & buy one, for that price it was exactly as much of a deal as it should've been
Feel like that goes for the entire range, it was a fantastic car, its not like it had generational pricing or made up for it in packaging or quality or anything, it was very fun, compromised, for good money, did its job, left, 30k sales is nothing to scoff at
neueziel1@reddit
I really wanted a Supra but couldn’t find one in 23, ended up with a Blackwing
NathanScott94@reddit
That's a car people will probably be talking about for decades. The MK V supra is not as special imo, shared platform, divisive looks (I like them), nonfunctional body elements, lots of things just make it less impressive.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
The Supra will absolutely have a cult following in the coming years. In 20 years, it'll be glazed just as hard as cars like the E46 M3. It was a phenomenal chassis for what you got, and the used prices make it even better. Then you'll see future forum posts saying "this car was always amazing" when people were shitting on it left, right, and center for its entire production run due to its BMW roots.
element515@reddit
Blackwing will be more niche. Supra will continue on with the massive aftermarket it has. As they get used an older, I think the Supra will have a life like the mkIV
neueziel1@reddit
Yeah not many modding options for 4bw unfortunately.
vw18t@reddit
Maybe in North America it’ll be remembered but worldwide the MKV will have a bigger impact the name “Supra” already has a cult following. The Black wing was only offered in North America
TripleShotPls@reddit
The Blackwing is on multiple levels a better car.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Sane reason why I got a CTR. Manual Supras were goong for like $80k lol
Kryptus@reddit
I feel like the M2 is the practical choice. And if someone wanted a lighter more nimble car to autoceoss or whatever then modding the lighter 4 cylinder Supra would be better and cheaper foe that purpose. Or just getting a C8 would also be better for a bit more money.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
The manual in the M2 sucks, the supra is a better drive, toyota did work some magic w/ bmw on that platform, I'd rather have a z4m40i over an m2 as well
But yeah at minimum someone crosshopping online it doesn't look good
element515@reddit
M2 has usable back seats though and decent sized trunk. Z4 and Supra are much smaller inside
xlb250@reddit
Yeah comes down to whether you want gran touring or sports car.
Jimbenas@reddit
My impression as well. They somehow made it worse than the F87. Has about as much feedback as a Logitech.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
& w/o a doubt every time you say it you get m2 owners & gti owners coping like it's more than passable it's just not as good as good as what the japanese have put out
ryandriggett@reddit
Congrats, you can parrot the same online opinion as everyone else!
Its not an amazing shifter but its also not bad to the point people should look at other options.
Honda manuals are not the second coming of a deity that everyone claims they are. Type-Rs have some of the worst feel IMO.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Everyone has the same opinion because it's totally true lmao it's passable but the supra manual is markedly improved
idk in what world a f87 manual is even in the same league as a s2k manual
Jimbenas@reddit
It’s not great. It was really the biggest pain point I had with my F87. Drove mine 600 miles to get my vette and back. I realized the F87 is kind of a shit car.
koopagabla@reddit
as someone with both a manual M2 and s2000 i agree with this guy
yobo9193@reddit
6 cylinder Supra dominates in autox, the 4cylinder is gimped with no LSD
Skensis@reddit
Big reason why I went M2, also never liked the Supra look, especially the fake vents and stuff.
ImBiginKorea@reddit
I've seen a few around my city but never saw one ever available at a dealership. Never felt like they were available.
dooit@reddit
I feel like it doesn't matter which model Toyota it is, you need to show up the weekend they come off the truck or already have a deposit on a dealer allocation.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
The only way to actually get the rare cars like a Supra is to look on sites like cars.com and call the dealerships as soon as you see a match of what you want on the site. Be prepared to go ~500 miles out of your way.
randeus@reddit
Not to mention, before they were discontinued, both the SS 1LE and Mach 1 were around for much of the Supra’s life and both of those, while bigger, less luxurious, and less toss able, were more practical and just as good, sometimes even better, on a track. The Dark Horse, while expensive, still presents stiff competition to the Supra for those same reasons.
Hornycloudlover@reddit
Z more accesible? We all know you’re just talking nonsense with that comment lmao.
randeus@reddit
It has literally always been hard to near impossible to get a Supra. Getting any performance car from Toyota sucks.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
They’re right. Zs are pretty cheap and they’re even getting a refresh to look better. For a while a Z Nismo could be had cheaper than a top trim Supra
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Year ago you could get them for like $10k off (https://www.theautopian.com/you-can-get-a-nissan-z-for-10000-off-if-you-know-where-to-look/), they're well outselling the supra now
They had a stop sale due to (iirc) paint issues, some production issues, they sorted it out, it's not hard to get one now at all. Far, far easier than a manual supra towards the tail end of production at least
ImBiginKorea@reddit
Got my performance like 12k under MSRP (for 44k) heck of a deal.
efficiency_deficit@reddit
I see them quite frequently in north Georgia.
dfields3710@reddit
The Nissan Z is more accessible because you can get them at a lower price and since Nissan ramped production, you can actually buy them. There 8 different Z models where I’m at in Destin, FL. With like 3 being a main stay on 2 different military bases.
aponderingpanda@reddit
Might be where you live? There's tons selling for under msrp in central texas.
BetterThanAFoon@reddit
That seems to be the Supra schtick at large. It's usually not tell they are gone and down market buyers start buying them they start gaining their cult following.
HuyFongFood@reddit
The Z is a porker, styling is not great and Nissan continues to shoot itself in the foot by selling their cars to people who can’t actually afford them.
Basically it’s Nissan’s SN95 Mustang with all of the terrible things that go along with it.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Wouldn't say they've shot themselves in the foot when it well outsold the supra last year
josh_moworld@reddit
Not to mention all the dealers playing ADM games. Toyota let them play so they’re complicit
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I'm sure its my area because getting any even slightly limited car in the tristate is always a pain, but I was interested in a manual supra for like three seconds 2 yrs back, turns out even at the end of the run its impossible, my local toyota dealer is complete ass, worse than the local kia dealer, I gave up, best was \~5k over (?)
& then I wanted a GX & got ran around the lexus dealer on that spec too bc they can't custom order (but they didn't have a problem calling & emailing & bugging me every other day for every other spec when I explicitly specified it must be that specific spec !!!
& toyota kinda got burned early on in the 86's life overproducing so its understandable why they play these games, its not like everyone else doesn't, buying a CTR is still a pain, but at that price its not like you don't have options
Eastern_Bet3714@reddit
I really wanted to pick up an A90 ever since it was released. Even signed up to get a copy of the blueprint from Toyota and hung it up my wall throughout my multiple moves. Times and times again the dealership experience turned me off from the idea across multiple cities. It’s not just the Supra, the experience seems to be universal from a corolla to a Land Cruiser. Toyota won’t do anything about it since they’re still selling like hot cakes.
Honda dealerships on the other hand has been much more humbled since the COVID supply crunch ended. You could probably find a CTR for MSRP for less nowadays.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
Looks like you lucked out not getting that GX yet though. I hope they can square away the issues, because I want one or a landcruiser.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Yeah but more bc the Mark Levinson system ended up being a bit of a downgrade over the previous gen, the exploding engines too but I've heard lexus dealers are good about warranty work, its not a daily, id live
The good thing about Toyota is you can probably buy the same car w/ all the issues squared away in 8yrs time
mrand01@reddit
Yep, I had to drive to Maryland to get my Golf R. That is, if I wanted it for anything even closely resembling MSRP lol
Different_Height_157@reddit
Considering it’s an enthusiast vehicle, you also have competition on the used end.
SnikySquirrel@reddit
If this car launched with a manual and its current horsepower it would have been more well received. Launching it with a detuned engine and auto only really killed the hype. Didn’t help that the C8 Corvette came out around the same time for a similar price.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
C8 corvette is regularly $10-$20k more to get the one you want. If you pick a used one and don’t care about the options sure.
sarcasticorange@reddit
That's to get the one you want.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
No it’s not. The Corvette I want is over $100k. I was speaking in general using a base stingray with a few options as an example.
sarcasticorange@reddit
A brand new Corvette LT1 can be purchased for well under $70k. This isn't debatable Picking any higher price point is inventing arbitrary needs to match your point.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
Nobody wants an LT1 with no options and no spoiler.
sarcasticorange@reddit
Nobody wants it, yet it makes up 43% of production? Ok.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
Nobody wants a 1LT the same way nobody wants a Nissan Altima. They buy them out of necessity and affordability.
cubs223425@reddit
Nothing says "necessity and affordability" like a $70K Corvette...yet it still gets picked over the Supra.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
It doesn’t though. They just make way less of the Supra and make it a pain in the ass to get them.
miner_andy@reddit
Not really, pretty much all non zr1s have been selling for 5-10k below msrp
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
MSRP is in the 80s and 90s.
cubs223425@reddit
That's not where things were at launch though. It released under $60K, and when demand made finding them incredibly hard, GM's response was to keep that low "first-year introductory price" for an extra year to get interested buyer a chance to find it at a better price.
WarCrimeGaming@reddit
True, but the supra was only $49-53k at that point. It’s always been cheaper, and even still, as far as I remember both were a pain in the ass to get and people were overpaying. So the corvette would have been the better option if you could order the exact model you wanted.
Anchor_Aways@reddit (OP)
The 1LT is the entry level and I see plenty at $72K here.
Uptons_BJs@reddit
Ehh, depending on where you live, if you live in a place with high insurance minimums, you’d save a big chunk of said gap in insurance
Hornycloudlover@reddit
Lol you don’t know what you’re talking bout. Go drive your old ass car bro.

F off troll.
Hornycloudlover@reddit
Ok poor boy
SnikySquirrel@reddit
Go back to playing Forza you fucking loser
Hornycloudlover@reddit
You probably can’t even afford forza
skidsareforkids@reddit
I cross-shopped with a C8 and really didn’t like the Corvette. The Supra happened to be an awful lot more rare in my part of the rural high-plains which made it far more of a head turner too which I like. Granted, there are C8 variants now which are able to bash hypercars but that’s a different tax bracket
SnikySquirrel@reddit
Yeah, I’m not making an argument as to which is the better car. I’m just saying the Corvette got a lot more positive reception at launch which kinda stole the Supra’s thunder.
79QUATTRO@reddit
to be fair, the original a90 supra was underrated in terms of power. they claim 335 but it’s really like 365-370. the a91 update makes 390-400whp
cubs223425@reddit
The author is basically arguing against hiimself the whole time.
"I hardly ever see them around. I can’t help but wonder why that is."
Right before that?
"I’d never driven one before."
The he says, "I blame the narrative that they’re all just reskinned BMWs," as if he didn't admit to never giving them a chance in 7 years, with no explanation as to why.
Says, "what else do you want?" while never giving it the time of day prior.
After that criticism about how people fault it for a BMW, he says, "I’m a big fan of the Supra’s powertrain, even if it comes from BMW," as if he's not doing the same thing he digs at others for.
And, again, complains "most folks have missed this generation of Toyota’s sports car. That’s a little sad," while driving one for the first time as a top-trim review unit in its last year.
No consideration of the "value" in the value section, leaving the price to the specs at the end. It's $60K+ and the author doesn't think that might be an issue for buyers. Not a bother to discuss the $70K+ price tag on the Final Edition in the supposed section about value. Not even a mention of anything that would comparatively present as a "value" discussion.
Just an overall terrible article written by someone who is a hypocrite for thinking people should know and like it, while ignoring it its whole life.
xlb250@reddit
IMO biggest weakness is that it’s a BMW. The steering and powertrain character is more like a luxury car.
Comms@reddit
The problem for the supra is that it looks like it passed through the accounting department before its look was finalized. If any car should have stayed as close as possible to its concept, it was this one.
darkknight302@reddit
The car was compromised because there were certain hard point that could not be changed based on how the Z4 was made.
Comms@reddit
We said the same thing. Your answer is just more detailed. :)
frankasaurussmite@reddit
Love my Supra and sad to see them discontinued. I didnt pay above msrp for mine but I had to wait 14 months for it and was on the list when they were AT only and couldnt switch to a manual later on. Still extremely happy dailying the car, although somehow both of my coolant pumps failed at 17k miles lmao.
d4ybrake@reddit
can they chuck a v8 in this and keep building them
Farking_Bastage@reddit
I have a '21 and that thing is pretty rowdy, I gotta tell ya. It is capable of getting you in trouble in a hell of a hurry. I love that car.
IncompatibleMeatbag@reddit
They have only themselves to blame. They made them so difficult to get. You couldn't spec and order them, you had to play wait list games and ADM games. I gave up and bought something else.
Dirty_Dragons@reddit
The problem with articles like that is that writer is making is seem like nobody wants to buy a Supra so they are just sitting on the lot, unsold for months. Which is off course as far from truth as possible. These cars are purchased before they even hit the dealer.
Every single one is instantly sold.
3000 sold out of 3000 made is not tough sales. That's 100% sold.
JARDIS@reddit
Price point in my country is a tough sell. Nearly $100k AUD at the local dealer when they first came out wasn't playing around. That's boomer money and boomers here that have that kind of cash to play with are gonna go more towards V8 Mustangs not something they associate with "boy-racers".
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Buying nice car in OZ is definitely pain, this doesn't mater what model is. We can get why you guys unable to have nice things.
AlpineWineMixer@reddit
Taxes. We always get royally fucked by taxes.
A good example is a brand new 2024 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 3LZ for sale right now in Australia will set you back $332,960.90 USD drive away.
narwhal_breeder@reddit
The idea of Mustangs not being associated with boy racers is a pretty funny cultural difference.
Jawshey@reddit
I feel like this was the aspirational route after someone owned an 86 and wanted more aggression. However, the 86 was at least affordable - the Supra is fighting a lot at its price point, especially on the used market.
MVolkJ1975@reddit
That's exactly where I went - 2013 FR-S to 2022 Supra. At that point there wasn't much else to compete with the Supra; the C8 was new and there were no deals to be had, the Z wasn't out yet, and used Caymans are a minefield of base cars in lame colors (which, IMHO, are bad deals). I even considered a used Alfa 4C for a minute until I realized I would have to daily it.
Toyota's allocation system in North America sucks, though, and my buying process was pretty easy compared to others I've seen.
yobo9193@reddit
Dealer markups killed any joy I had for this car. It’s one thing to not care about a car that I was already in the wrong tax bracket for (hello, Porsche 911 S/T), but I can afford this car; I just don’t want to get jerked around by deales
HuyFongFood@reddit
Why? It’s a body swapped BMW. No thanks.
Killdozer54@reddit
It will be, years later. I think these are good to hold their value very well. And everyone will wonder why didn’t people buy these new when they had a chance.
austic@reddit
I love them. Bit just Soo overpriced for what you get and too much of a hassle to buy with the amount.
