What’s your favorite candy bar from back when.??
Posted by curious-thatguy@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 376 comments
I just scored and found the company that makes Clark bars. Ordered a full box, just coz..I haven’t seen one in years, I had to resort to butter finger as my second go to but they are really hard to find that ain’t just to crunchy. If you find a fresh one then that’s a good second. Any thoughts?
TotoItsAMotorRace@reddit
Twix is the only candy with the cookie crunch.
this_is_your_dad@reddit
They aren’t bars per se but I miss the Giant Tarts. They changed them to chewy tarts but the chewy ones were no good.
I would take the lemon Giant Tart and put the whole thing in my mouth. Intense sour mouth-punch!
Normal-Philosopher-8@reddit
The Clark bars are getting harder and harder to find. My husband ordered a box for my last birthday.
curious-thatguy@reddit (OP)
Did they taste the same as you remembered?
Normal-Philosopher-8@reddit
They did. But like Clark bars of old, there are variations - the best, freshest Clark bars are crumbly, melt in your mouth perfection. Then you can get older, more solidified bars that might be risky for those of us with older teeth. And everything in between. (I can’t tell the difference between this wine and that wine, but if it’s Clark bars, Oreos, or Hostess cupcakes - I’m your foodie!)
The freshest bars are still fantastic. And I’ll eat the older ones simply because there is nothing else like them on the market.
Hoping you get a fresh box!
curious-thatguy@reddit (OP)
Thanks, from what I was told by the manufacturer they only make Clark bars When they have everything together and ready, then when they come online they don’t last long, I’ve also learned that so I’m hoping they are Fresh I agree melt in your mouth Butter Fingers are the same Fresh or crunchy Have a great day

If you are forcing me to just pick one it would be Snickers in the fun size bar.
When butterfingers change there formula that was the end for me. I do not like the new version. Like the whole Coke/New Coke thing hoping they bring back the classic butterfingers.

I think the same company still makes them. They only make them occasionally now from what I was told because of how they handle the ingredients. I bought one of these from a vending machine in a Disney resort in the late 80s. It had maggots in it.

Nice! At least I'm not the furthest i could be from Canada in the contiguous US.
I think the last time I saw them was either a Cracker Barrel country store or one of those nostalgic candy stores you find on the town square of every Podunk, USA town.
It's been probably greater than 10 years though....

Charleston Chew
LittleMissRawr78@reddit
Oh, I'd love to find the strawberry ones. They were my favorite of the 3.
ArcanumAntares@reddit
The chocolate flavored version was my preference...throw these in the freezer for a couple hours, take it out, smash it on a table, open it up and it's shattered into pieces
slasherbobasher@reddit
I used to love Nestle Crunch and Whatchamacallit but the quality isn’t the same. Goo Goo Clusters were also a special treat.
PecKRocK75@reddit
That's funny my mom wanted a Clark bar like 10 days ago I was like I j Haven't seen then in many years
procrasstinating@reddit
I used to love Reggie bars when I was a kid.

Skor. So good and better than Heath. I would take tiny bites to make it last.
Starkravingbrie@reddit
Heath always tastes slightly burnt compared Skor and the crunch was just right.

I'm a Twix man myself. I wish they would bring back the peanut butter Twix.

Still love Reese's and 3 Musketeers the most.

Sky Bar. Several candy bars in one.
onestoicduck@reddit
Whatchamacallit. 100 grand was also good, but Whatchamacallit is the easy answer for me.
XStonedCatX@reddit
Those were my favorite! I get butterfingers occasionally, and they have most certainly changed the recipe over the years. Now they taste terrible and get stuck in your teeth (even worse than before)
gcwardii@reddit
They’re not crispity crunchity anymore :(
Harley_Mom@reddit
Chunky bar.
No-Property1871@reddit
Bar None. I still miss it.
Treelilmunkeys@reddit
You don't have to. You can order on Amazon (depending on your region, probably.) Hershey sold the rights and another company (Iconic) is producing them. Although I'm not positive it's the exact iteration you remember as I think there were at least a couple variations. I actually remember taste testing this as a teen at the Springfield Mall in Delco in the 80s before it came out.
Comeoneileen1971@reddit
My dad loved Clark bars.
ArtistJames1313@reddit
Original Mars bar was the best.
Whatchamacallit was probably second.
And every once in awhile, even though I don't like white chocolate, a Zero really hit the spot.

Another vote for Mars bar!

Marathon + a small Slurpee used up my meager allowance many times in the 70s. If there was any spare change, it went to the bottom row of mini Charleston Chews or Chik-o-Sticks.
obscure_original@reddit
So chaotic to eat, all the chocolate coating would fall off and the caramel would stretch and get in my hair however I got one at the Benz Variety down the street every chance I got.
HOUS2000IAN@reddit
Yessss…. as a kid, that felt like the ultimate!
Ok-Description-4640@reddit
Marathon Bar. It was this rope of chocolate covering an especially delicious caramel but I could never get one of those fucking things home without it melting.
boybrian@reddit
Loved a Marathon too. Apparently a Curly Wurly is the closest thing you can get now. Imported.

I was afraid to ask my parents to get me a Hundred Thousand Dollar Bar because I thought they cost that much. They had everything I loved in candy bars all in one bar, I wanted one so bad! Felt like an idiot when I realized they cost the same as all the other candy bars.

In college, my night class breaks were treated with Whatchamacallits. I managed a gas station, on an overseas military installation around 9/11, and got my high school-aged cashiers to start pushing them. They came up with the idea of competing with their favorites: one would have W’s and the other Snickers, or something. They had a lot of fun with it. While I never found out the stats, I’m fairly sure we were the top seller of Whatchamacallits in Europe around 00/01.

Not necessarily my favorite candy bar but when Kudos first came out they were completely covered in chocolate. It was like having a candy bar in my sacked lunch.
Butterfinger, Snickers and Score were my favorite candy bars growing up.

Summit bars. Packaged like Twix with two bars and very similar, but had a wafer base instead of a cookie base, and had crushed peanuts over the wafer with caramel.
