Ok, GenX ladies who have had Cataract Surgery. How are we doing our eyeliner nowadays?
Posted by cpbaby1968@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 147 comments
I graduated high school in 1986. I have used eyeliner on my waterline for around 45 years at this point and now I have one bionic eye with the second implantation scheduled for 4/28.
I have no eyelashes. Short. Stubby. I hate mascara. So I like eyeliner. Yes. 80’s waterline eyeliner. My surgeon told me not to do that anymore so trash doesn’t get in my eyes and the incisions. In the abstract i understand COMPLETELY. It makes total sense to me. But in practice? I’ve not walked out of my house more than a few days without my waterline covered in also 45 yrs.
Help?
Graveyard_Plume@reddit
My eyeliner is tattooed on.
MJ95B@reddit
When I was losing my sight O had my eyeliner tattooed. I was told it would fade after 10 years, but found out as I waiting for my last surgery that it was still looking like fresh liner.
The nurse made me wipe my eyes with a wet wipe to prove it wasn't makeup - it had been over 10 years.
Graveyard_Plume@reddit
Yeah, same with mine. I don't remember the year I got it, but it has to be at least 20 years ago at this point. Best decision I ever made.
Nisi-Marie@reddit
Lash extensions!
Yes, they are pricey. It’s the one self-care thing that I have stuck to. I’ve taken to doing my own nails, I maintain mountain hair color. But I do go get my lashes done.
With extensions, I pretty much wear zero makeup these days. 99% of the time a coat of lipstick is all I need and I look put together.
Yesterday I woke up feeling like death, but I had a zoom meeting I had to do so I threw on some lipstick. This was the picture that I snapped yesterday of my cat holding me hostage.
goingloopy@reddit
I also have a scarf cat, and I need to know where I can procure the lipstick.
Nisi-Marie@reddit
Love the scarf cat!
I use the Cover Girl Outlast - it is the one with two tubes. Been using it for years at this point. It stays on through food, drink, etc.
My color is Brazen Raisin.
I have tried to switch brands, switch colors, but I am spoiled by how well it stays on.
goingloopy@reddit
Oh thank god. I use that kind and its Revlon counterpart, and I was afraid it would be the kind that gets all over everything. I haven’t tried this color, though. BRB, ordering on Amazon.
Nisi-Marie@reddit
Here a more normal photo at an event I worked. Nothing but lipstick.
No matter how tore up I look, it helps me always feel somewhat put together
ChickinMagoo@reddit
Outside of weddings, I (54f) haven't worn a full face of make-up regularly since the 80s. I stopped wearing eye makeup regularly in the early 90s because my contacts made my eyes so dry that I always ended up looking like a raccoon from constantly rubbing my eyes. My vision is so bad now that without my glasses, I can't see well enough to do eyeliner, so I just don't. I do not have to see my own face for 99% of the time, so this is just how I look for the world.
Qedtanya13@reddit
Y’all still wear makeup?
HewDewed@reddit
Only if socializing.
Excluding work. There’s no point in wasting my time, energy, or money on putting makeup (or styling my hair) to go to work.
Qedtanya13@reddit
Yeah, I don’t wear anything on my face but moisturizer. My hair gets its own stuff then a headband and I’m ready to go.
Myfanwy66@reddit
I don’t. It’s so freeing to be fully authentic!
Qedtanya13@reddit
Yeah, I have worn any in about three years and love it
Sad_Apple_3387@reddit
No eyeliner. It looks pretty gnarly on us oldies. Use a powder eyeshadow close to the lash line, apply with a soft brush and stipple it in. A little goes a long way. The circled eyes of our youth make us look like raccoons now.
Sad_Apple_3387@reddit
Tried to edit to add a photo of a light makeup day I did recently. Brown powder eyeshadow used below the lash line.
HewDewed@reddit
Beautiful!!
Sad_Apple_3387@reddit
Thank you
Rough-Flower8580@reddit
This is funny because I still do a upper line with a small cat eye. Just like in the 90’s I’m 48 😁 I love my black eyeliner.
catshark2o9@reddit
I still do my cat eye too. I’m 49.
Ok-Writing9280@reddit
I’m 52 and fake a baby wing with a bronzey chocolate or deep burgundy / plum eyeshadow or gel liner.
I apply along my upper lash line with an angled eye liner brush without a wing.
Then I apply some shadow or pencil with a push brush under the outer third of the lower lash line and then use an angled brush to bring it up upwards on an angle. Then use the liner brush to connect the lower lash line.
I have Sjögren’s syndrome so have to be very careful with eye makeup.
When I don’t do this, I wear a beige cream eye stick under my lower lash line. It is a little bit darker than my makeup shade and gives definition without being in your face.
I don’t use black eye makeup. I really love a burgundy mascara. Less harsh than black and makes my green eyes pop.
goingloopy@reddit
I’m almost 52, and I’m a redhead. Black eye makeup looks awful on me. I got some burgundy mascara recently, and I love it, especially for days when all I do is mascara and lipstick. I like different colors of eyeliner, but I mostly use a bronze or plum. (I have light brown eyes.) I also love eyeshadow sticks and liquids, they’re so easy if I actually wear more eye makeup.
Amaranth504@reddit
46 and same. Can't let it go. Upper line only.
Tiger_grrrl@reddit
I’m 60 and I still love a lil kitten liner 😍 I’m about to have cataract surgery too, and I’ll really miss playing with my colored eye pencils while I heal, because that’s really all the makeup I wear, but I miss my 20/20 vision more! The only cool thing about getting older is that you just don’t care about many things any more (in the immortal words of Melani of the “we do not care club” 😹), but the rest sucks. Bad.
CalOkie6250@reddit
I had lens replacement back in February. Check with your surgeon, but I think that is only a temporary demand. I was told not to wear any eye makeup at all for awhile (I don’t wear makeup anymore, so I didn’t pay attention to how long it was). Once your eye is healed, you shouldn’t need to worry about it getting into your eye…but again, check with your surgeon.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
I don’t get my bionic left eye installed til 4/28 and I have 4-6 weeks of healing after that before I can wear waterline again.
CalOkie6250@reddit
Side note: I’m super jealous you get your second one done! I have some retinal edema they have to get under control before I can get my second done. It’s such an amazing improvement and I can’t wait to have both eyeballs working well again. (Sorry, I know it’s not the point of your post)
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
It’s not the point but I’m so sorry to hear that. I was absolutely terrified of my first surgery and am beyond stoked for the second. I hope your edema clears quickly so you can get it done.
CalOkie6250@reddit
I was scared too! Day of, I was trying to find any reason I could to cancel…so glad I didn’t. That ride home was glorious! Made it so much better that it was a bright sunny day as well 😍
chayton6@reddit
Oh oh oh!!!! I got you!! I'm the same. I have Persian ancestry so I must wear waterline eyeliner. Otherwise that line looks stark white between my lashes and eyes.
L'Oreal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Liner
This is magical - it goes on so smooth and easy you would think it's pre-melted. I can't go without it anymore. It makes my eyes look so subtle but effortlessly dramatic.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
How does it last? Does it smear?
shartheheretic@reddit
Except her doctor said no more waterline eyeliner unless she wants to mess up her eyes after cataract surgery.
chayton6@reddit
It's still a great easy to apply eyeliner that smudges out really easy.

I had eyeliner tattooed on my eyes a few years ago. It was very tastefully done and healed in a few weeks. I go tired of having to put that stuff on every day. I already wear contact lens and didn’t want to increase my risk of infection.
BeBopBarr@reddit
As someone with multiple tattoos, I literally could not imagine getting my eyes tattooed 😳😅
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
Right? And it has to be touched up every so often. I just can’t deal with the idea the needles near my eyes when I can see.
BeBopBarr@reddit
Same reason I haven't done lasik LOL
Odd-Significance8020@reddit
Same!
BraveRefrigerator552@reddit
I had it tattooed
Viola-Swamp@reddit
On the waterline? Hell no you didn’t. Please tell me you didn’t?
Odd-Significance8020@reddit
I also have tattooed eyeliner. I have heavily hooded upper lids… so my makeup tattooer did my skin and waterline. Only did my upper line.
BraveRefrigerator552@reddit
You’re probably right. I tattooed in my upper lash line so is that the wrong lid?
Honeybee71@reddit
I line my top lash line and use a little eyeshadow to line the bottom. I started this a few months ago bc I had eyeliner blindness. No lashes either so when I’m feeling fancy I use falsies
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
I’m sorry… eyeliner blindness?
jenij730@reddit
It means you can’t see that your liner style is not doing you any favors .

Ohhhhh. That makes sense. Luckily I have a 22 yr old daughter who tells me daily how bad my makeup choices look. Which is eyeliner and a Rose lipstick most days.

mspuffins@reddit
i got bad pink eye in the 6th grade from using someone’s eyeliner inside the waterline. never did that again. just a line above the lashes.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
You never ever share makeup. Especially eye makeup.
mspuffins@reddit
i was 11 and learned my leason! my mom wouldn’t let me wear eyeliner…like a good mom. so i borrowed my friend’s in the locker room after PE
so not only did i look like a trashy 11 year old in black eyeliner, but then i got raging pink eye.
Down2my-last-nerve@reddit
I just had cataract surgery and was told to take a break from eye makeup for only a month, but I cheated and wore a little bit of brand new mascara just one week after for a special occasion with no bad effects.
DaniCapsFan@reddit
I've always put eyeliner just outside the waterline. Am I doing it wrong?
Impressive-Safety191@reddit
I switched to this when doing the waterline messed up my contacts. It’s a choice, not wrong!
Educational_Bid_5315@reddit
I haven’t used eyeliner in at least 30 years 🤣
1questions@reddit
I use eyeliner once a year or so if I’m feeling super fancy. Usually it’s mascara and tinted lip gloss.
Soundtracklover72@reddit
Time for tattooed eye liner?
Ynifi@reddit
It always looks bad and ends up grey-green
Soundtracklover72@reddit
Blargh. That stinks
Ok-Till-5285@reddit
Haven't done waterline in decades, closes in the eyes.
I did have chemo and lost all my lashes to chemo (now they are sparse) I use upper eyeliner and smudge a bit of liner or powder just at the outside bottom corner and pull it up and out slightly to give a more almond shaped smokey eye
BigMomma12345678@reddit
I stopped the waterline thing in my teens. Put it at the base of your lashes. I was sensitive to having it close to my eyes anyway.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
I’m not. I am sensitive to some eyeliners, though. That stinks.
FlippingPossum@reddit
I haven't even had surgery and I have yet to figure out eyeliner. Lol
I_love_Hobbes@reddit
I don't wear makeup. Haven't for more than 30 years.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
Go you! Me, though, not so much. The only makeup I wear daily is eyeliner and a tinted lipbalm. I am a “reformed goth” type so the makeup i wear is a huuuuuge step down from what I used to wear. Wearing totally none is unthinkable for me, but I am for now.
spacebunsofsteel@reddit
This is the answer. My skin looks amazing for my age and I think part of that is no chemicals on my face besides sunscreen.
OP that eyeliner is really aging you. Teens don’t do that anymore. Maybe find some makeup TikToks? It’s all about smooth skin color and the eye wing.
ReasonableCrow7595@reddit
I didn't wear much makeup as a teen, and I don't see the point in taking makeup advice from that demographic in my mid 50s. Most of us don't have smooth skin without a lot of very expensive products/procedures and eye wings look ridiculous on severely hooded eyes, which often comes with age. Add to that the filtering and whatnot being designed to look good on camera for social media, most of the advice given wouldn't look good in real life with natural light. I'll pass.
Particular-Cod-8221@reddit
I think I look younger without it just mascara only every eyeliner runs for me
pasta666sauce@reddit
Try NYX waterproof eyeliner if you havent. Only thing ive ever tried that doesnt run and actually stays on all day. Even after a run in 87 degree weather. Its a little difficult to apply at first but its anazing
ReasonableCrow7595@reddit
I have severely runny eyes and not even NYX holds up for more than an hour or two without smearing.
Thin-Disk4003@reddit
Waterline eyeliner is outdated anyhow, isn’t it?
OkIncrease6030@reddit
Where else would you put it?
BigMomma12345678@reddit
At the base of the eyelashes
spacebunsofsteel@reddit
They don’t do eyelining now, just the wing.
BigMomma12345678@reddit
I don't put anything on my eyes any more after developing meibomian gland issues 🙁
Thin-Disk4003@reddit
Had that happen too. That was awful. Hope yours resolved!
Thin-Disk4003@reddit
Lash line
Ajstross@reddit
Tight lining looks better anyway. I haven’t done waterline eyeliner for decades (other than the occasional nude to brighten my eye area. Apply into the lash line and get a compact brush to smudge.
Viola-Swamp@reddit
Lining your waterline closes in the eye and makes it look smaller. The whole point of liner is to enhance the eyes and make them look larger, so that technique is counterproductive. It increases the risk of infection for everyone, not just post-op, and it’s just not a great practice. We’ve all got makeup habits we developed in our youth we cling to despite them not doing us any favors, but you have an excuse to treat yourself to a makeover! If it’s in the budget, or even if you have to save up a bit, schedule a 60 or 90 minute session with a well recommended MUA in your area. Talk to them about how you want to look, what image you want to project, what features you want to play up and what things you want to play down. They can help recommend products too, as the ones we love can stop loving us as our skin changes and age alters the texture and composition of our skin. If that’s just not possible, try the counter at Sephora or similar and get some suggestions. There are makeup subs too, but I’ll tell you, Zoomers have discovered waterlining like they invented it, and everyone younger than GenX thinks a winged liner is mandatory, not merely one of many fun tools in the eyeliner arsenal but some kind of religion. I’ve never looked, but there’s probably a sub for more mature makeup wearers, ‘cause there’s a sub for everything.
Btw, my sympathies on the loss of your eyelashes. Mine are far more sparse and shorter than they used to be, they used to be fantastic but at least I still have something. It’s my eyebrows that have left the building. I have all of like three hairs on one side, and maybe six in the other. I don’t have a thyroid, so between forty and fifty they just kind of… disappeared. Now I have to draw the, on like an old lady (which I now am, thanks) or my forehead looks like a plucked chicken. I suppose that goes with the poultry theme I have going, what with the glorious turkey neck and all. My Gram said getting old is hell, but she didn’t warn me about this shit.
bebenee27@reddit
Wait a couple months for the incisions to heal. Get yourself some nice lipstick and some brow wax to keep a nice frame around your eyes. Have fun with blush! It’s trending. (I know, we don’t care, but I’m trying to cheer you up.)
Let your eyes heal.
In a few months, maybe you’ll like your new look enough that you won’t miss the tight lining. Or maybe you’ll go right back to it.
Either way, at least it’s summer, so you can wear some bad ass sun glasses half the time.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and safe second surgery.

Think of it as an opportunity to break a habit that probably isn't doing you any favours. I am your age and dark waterline eyeliner makes my eyes look smaller and makes me look frozen in times gone by. You may look awesome, but try for a couple of days. I bet you get a lot of compliments.
BravestBlossom@reddit
Exactly. It hurts to realize but it's true.
Kryceks-Revenge@reddit
I had cataract surgery 15 years ago. I wear eyeliner all the time. And mascara. Maybe don’t wear while you are healing?
Patient-Chocolate531@reddit
She’s talking about wearing it on the waterline. Bad idea, even without having had cataract surgery.
Kryceks-Revenge@reddit
I wear it in my upper and lower waterline? If people have bad makeup hygiene, then yeah. Bad idea.
Sleep-Improvement613@reddit
Same - no make up since I got married 12 years ago. Now 47. Not worth it. If u really think you need it, get the permanent eyeliner. One and done.

Krishd88@reddit
If you don't listen to your doctor you may lose your vision and at that point eyeliner won't matter. Maybe use some of the cream or powdered eyeshadows close to where you eyelashes would be or use eyeliner outside of your eye. Trends change all the time. I put 'eye make-up without eye liner' into Pinterest and a bunch of pins came up. Here is one that looks good and the liner is outside the eye and uses shadow to emphasize.
Here is a website that eventually gets to the powdered eyeliner at 7:30: https://www.ellisjamesdesigns.com/eyeshadow-without-eyeliner/?utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=organic
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
Omg. Where did I say I wasnt listening to my dr? I want to stop the waterline eyeliner so I don’t have to worry about it affecting my eyes after I’m given the go ahead by the eye doctor. I’ve tossed the old stuff and have brand new, never opened that I’m going to use once I’m allowed. I don’t care for mascara so I don’t use it.
Krishd88@reddit
Sorry, wasn't clear you were following his advice.
jbarinsd@reddit
I had reconstructed eyelid surgery several years ago and lost most of my eyelashes so mascara is out. I was stuck on inside eyelid black eyeliner too thinking it was the only substitution for eyelashes, but my surgery made my eyes look smaller and inside eyeliner made them look even smaller. I use dark eyeshadow now and apply it with the pointy tip of the applicator outside the water mark. Then I smudge it a little and it gives me (I think) the same effect as eyeliner but not in the eye.
_fidel_castro_@reddit
Eye surgeon here. Yeah keep your eyes clean for at least a month after surgery. Afterwards you could get a tattoo eyeliner
Gritty_Grits@reddit

LevelPerception4@reddit
I like using eyeliner on the outer half of my top lid and under the waterline. Like I’m half-outlining my eyes.
chilicheesefritopie@reddit
You heard the doc, no eyeliner on the waterline. Like any habit you have to quit, you’ll get used to it over time. After healing, maybe just do eyeliner above the lash line of your top lid.
jenij730@reddit
I have had the surgery in both eyes but I never wore my eyeliner this way. Honestly, that look is aging even if you haven’t had surgery. Just stop and line your top lid only above the lash line. I recommend ditching the pencils and using a powder and liner brush to get a softer look. Maybe consider false but natural lashes too if that’s a concern.
ahutapoo@reddit
If you use lighter colors, I think it looks okay

What I’d do is go to the nearest Sephora (or fancy department store, if there’s still one with a cosmetic department near you) and ask one of the lovely folks there to help you with a new look.
There’s usually a price for this ($30 - $75 through the Sephora app), but in my experience it’s worth it. The lovely young woman who did my SPF-under-makeup lesson at Sephora still hooks me up to great deals around the store when I come in.
shartheheretic@reddit
Just use the eyeliner on the lids/along the lower lash line. Doing it just on the outside corner (toward the temple area) can make a huge difference. Waterline eyeliner doesn't look great on most people over 25 anyway.
_P4X-639@reddit
I stopped waterline eyeliner decades ago. I just put eyeliner on the top of my top lid. I used to do both lids, but at 53 I find my eyes look more open and larger with just the top. As my skin has gotten paler, even eyeliner across just half of the bottom lids was staring to make me look like I was a white blanket with two holes burned into it.
Expensive-Ferret-339@reddit
I don’t wear eyeliner anymore, in fact I stopped wearing makeup completely during covid.
Recently I started using a little blush and mascara-the tubing kind. Doesn’t flake or smudge and easy to remove with soap and water. Makes me look less sleepy.
Krishd88@reddit
what is the tubing kind mean?
Expensive-Ferret-339@reddit
Different formula. From Google: uses polymers to wrap individual lashes in "tubes" rather than coating them with pigment,
Ribeye_steak_1987@reddit
Eyeliner on the waterline is very outdated and ages you.
I would skip the eyeliner altogether. But if it feels too naked without, just line the outsides halves of the lower with a soft color (eg, not black).
EdenSilver113@reddit
For those of us with crepey or wrinkly undereye lower lash line eyeliner ages us way more than waterline liner. I gave that up 15 years ago or more. If I want to define my lower lash line I use an eyeshadow a few shades darker than my skin tone.
MienaLovesCats@reddit
My eye surgeon told me not to wear eyeliner or mascara; except for special occasions. Even then only for part of a day.
EstablishmentDense98@reddit

Ok-Raspberry-4313@reddit
Definitely don't risk eye infections. You can use the surgery as a reason to stop using eyeliner that way or at all. A more natural look, less makeup, is popular and makes women look more authentic. Take some time without eyeliner (months) and see how you feel and how people respond to you. You may like it.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
I happen to like my eyeliner, thank you very much. I dress/wear makeup for myself, fuck everyone else’s opinion. If someone doesn’t like my look, they can turn away.
hopelesscaribou@reddit
It's just one month. You can go a month. Don't risk infections until your incisions are pronounced healed.
I found out how much easier a strong lipstick was to put on over the eye makeup routine thanks to cataract surgery. I also lost the tiny close up vision I had so applying eye makeup is harder now (not a bad trade off for 20/20 vision and no surgical complications).
Also, as an aside, buy a fresh eyeliner for when you start using it again, and throw out your old one, especially if you plan on breaking the rules.
cpbaby1968@reddit (OP)
I don’t aim to wear it before the month. I have 3 brand new ones I’ve refused to use because I knew this surgery was coming.

Depends on the person I suppose, but using liner on the waterline is incredibly aging in my opinion. Lining just your lash line will lift the look of your eyes. It’s just a matter of getting used to a new look.
LayerNo3634@reddit
The cataracts aren't the issue. Makeup styles change and you need to change your look as you age. I had cataract surgery and wore no eyeliner between surgeries or right after - that's just for health. It's time for a new look.

Yeah, don’t get the eyeliner tattoo. Why do something permanent you might end up HATING and going through the stress of it, not to mention possible injury. Just play around with your makeup. Have fun with it. I know it’s scary to let go of something that has been your tried and true for so long but you could discover a whole new look that you love even more! Another thought: most makeup counters offer free makeovers so that you will buy their products. Or at least they used to (skimpflation 🙄). Or have your girls over for a totally girly night and try new hairdo’s and makeup and silly stuff. You got this!!! 💕💪🏼😃

A good tattoo artist can totally handle this, but check with your surgeon on how long you should wait before you do that.
Also, when you talk to tattoo artists, ask to see examples of their work.
If they can't show you several eyeliner tattoos they've already done, keep looking.

Girl, these are your eyes we’re talking about. Don’t play around with them. If you’ve been rocking the same look for 45 years, it’s time to update your makeup.
You can try tubing mascara. It’s not irritating nor does it transfer like normal mascara. You can also line your lash line and smudge it out to give a more updated look.
Or, just get permanent makeup. It’s a pretty quick procedure. Stalk a few PM artists or tattoo artists IG page and go with who looks the most aligned with your style.
