The International Court of Justice issued a July 19, 2024 advisory opinion ruling that Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian territory and engaging in the illegal forcible transfer of populations in violation of the Geneva Conventions. They said “the Court is of the view that Israel’s unlawful policies and practices are in breach of Israel’s obligation to respect the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. . . . the Court is of the view that Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip has not entirely released it of its obligations under the law of occupation. Israel’s obligations have remained commensurate with the degree of its effective control over the Gaza Strip. . . . In the Court’s view, Israel’s policies and practices are contrary to the prohibition of forcible transfer of the protected population under the first paragraph of Article 49, of the Fourth Geneva Convention the Court is of the view that Israel’s systematic failure to prevent or to punish attacks by settlers against the life or bodily integrity of Palestinians, as well as Israel’s excessive use of force against Palestinians, is inconsistent with its obligations. . . . The Court has also found in reply to the first part of question (b) that the continued presence of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is illegal."

Furthermore the Israeli settlements in the West Bank since 1967 have also been illegal as noted by the UN Security Council and the Red Cross, and the International Court of Justice
