Do you believe in there being life out in space? I reckon there is but they're probably no where near as advanced as us and probably fighting with swords, or that the life we might find might be more like animals rather than "aliens" or humans.

Consciousness - Why and how did we obtain it and what’s the point of it? What happens to it when we pass away?
View on Reddit #83801009

Unlucky-Public-2947@reddit

Consciousness is an emergent property that occurs when enough complexity of thought has been reached and an organism begins to contemplate itself relative to its inputs.
View on Reddit #83802495

Such_Confection4949@reddit (OP)

we have evolved too much. we weren’t ever meant to be conscious of ourselves
View on Reddit #83803108

Unlucky-Public-2947@reddit

I know what you mean but I think statements along the lines of ‘what we were meant to be’ is kind of missing the reality of how directionless evolution is, even though, looking back, it seems that way.

i studied psychology and this is one of those questions that doesn’t really have a clean answer, but i think about it a lot. as for why we have it, some theories say it’s an evolutionary advantage for survival and social behaviour. and what happens to it when we die is honestly unknown, science would say consciousness is tied to brain activity, so when that stops, it stops but i like to think that consciousness isn’t just something that ends, more like something that changes form? like it’s bigger than the individual brain it comes from, even if we can only experience it from inside one life what do you think?
View on Reddit #83801284

Unlucky-Public-2947@reddit

It’s probably has an evolutionary advantage but it doesn’t need to have one to explain it. It could just be a by product from the complexity of our brains, like our ability to play piano is a by product of increased tool use.

While your question has been removed, it would probably be allowed with a bit of tweaking. Repost ensuring you've not asked; * Basic throwaway questions which put most of the effort on our readers to figure out by parsing the body or having to ask you questions themselves (i.e. "What do I do?" - be more specific in the title). * "Anyone" questions which only seek to validate a proposition. (i.e, "Has anyone put the heating on yet?"). Yes, somebody always has, be more specific. * Closed questions that prompt people to answer with a simple yes/no response (i.e, "Are you saving into a pension?". Instead ask "How much do you save into a pension, and why?") * Anything which is overtly obvious or is basically a survey (i.e. "How much do you earn?" or "Are trains free?"). * For reviews/recommendations of a product/service without sufficiently detailing what you've already found and discounted. Use Google Reviews and Trustpilot first. Then if you still need help, come back with something specific and the research you've done so far. As well as being interesting and unique, questions must - * Have a genuine, clear, and concise question in their title - including a question mark. * Ensure you can say your question title to someone at a bus stop and have them understand what you mean. So for example, no "Overseas Territories?", instead it should be "What Overseas Territories have you been to?". * Enough information in the body of your post to allow users to give good answers. Specifically, don't just repeat the question in the body. Provide an elucidation, example, or explanation. If this still confuses you, contact modmail, and we will try help!

Why does it matter that we are here? We strive, we toil, we succeed or fail and in the end we'll all end up in the ground, quite possibly after losing our minds and drooling for a fair few years.

This! This question is one I often wonder about then instantly shut that thought down. I find it dangerous to ponder over because when you really start to think about it, what is the point? Unless you’re doing something that is significantly impacting future humanity, then really what is the point in one’s individual life? How depressing.

When I want to get to know someone, I often ask "You are in a bar and you meet an exact copy or clone of yourself who thought the same way as you. What would you say or do?". The answers are often very illuminating and people reveal true thoughts about themself.

Clinically, all the therapy I'm aware of for depression aims at helping you move from a place of psychological darkness into light. But some creatures are adapted to darkness, they are fine in cave or under the sea, or only coming out at night. Could there be a therapy like that?
View on Reddit #83802483

Such_Confection4949@reddit (OP)

i think people who are brought up in bad environments literally adapt to the darkness. that’s how generational trauma is passed down, we learn to survive in conditions that would break others, and then we’re told we need to move into the light when the dark is the only place we’ve ever felt safe or functional. maybe therapy shouldn't always be about changing the environment, but about acknowledging that some of us are just built for the deep sea and that's okay.

How is religion _still_ so popular? It made a lot of sense back in medieval times when science was unheard of and the giant ball of light in the sky could be seen as a God-like figure, but now that we know so much (and yet still so little) about our own planet and its place in the universe, how can folks seriously believe that their deity of choice created everything as we know it (and not that long ago in cosmic terms, at that) and also often believe that as far as life in the universe goes, Earth is the only one? It reminds me of The Last Day episode of Red Dwarf, where Kryten believes in Silicon Heaven but when asked if Silicon Heaven is the same as human Heaven, he replies with "Human heaven? Oh, human heaven doesn't exist... someone just made that up to prevent you from all going _nuts_!"
View on Reddit #83802134

Such_Confection4949@reddit (OP)

i honestly think humans evolved way too much and we weren’t ever meant to understand such cosmic things. our brains just aren't wired to process the scale of the universe, so we create these stories to make it feel smaller and more manageable. as someone who isn't religious, i feel like it’s often just a way for people to excuse themselves from the guilt of being bad people. as long as they follow the rules of their deity, they don't have to take real accountability for how they treat others here.

View on Reddit #83801467

Depends what we mean by life. It's naive to imagine that it would be similar to humans and as a preoccupied with power, control and violence as some of our own leaders, but in my lifetime we've added virus, bacterium and fungus to animal, vegetable and mineral, so there may be forms of life we haven't discovered yet.

Ultimate Cosmological Question. Why is there something rather than nothing? The state of nothing is much easier to maintain than the state of everything.
View on Reddit #83801678

Holli303@reddit

Just posted the opposite of this question. How can there be nothing? If we can see it, then there must be something to observe, right?
View on Reddit #83802046

Such_Confection4949@reddit (OP)

maybe nothing isn’t actually a stable or meaningful state the way we imagine it, or maybe our idea of nothing is already shaped by the fact that we exist to think about it. but i also like the idea that existence doesn’t necessarily need a reason in the way we expect. it might just be and we’ve overshot evolution. i don’t think we were ever meant to be aware of our existence!
