The New TCR Is the Priciest Hyundai Elantra N, but It Still Costs a Lot Less Than a Civic Type R

It's cool they made this in sort or ridiculous kind of way. I wonder how many we will get in the US
RustyNK@reddit
I would replace the wing ASAP, but otherwise it's a pretty sick looking car.
Automatic_Zebra_1099@reddit
That wing is uhhh a choice. Woof.
FatMonkeyMilk@reddit
Well, aerodynamically, it's more effective if it's higher up like that. So it seems to be driven by performane rather than styling.
Source: master degree in aeronautical engineering
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
This is how Hyundai has won me over in the last handful of years. They seem to be one of the few manufacturers that appear to be making decisions based primarily on performance first and aesthetic/style second (which is my style anyways). They went from being on my radar as a brand to avoid to one of the first places I’d look for something in their class.
Tricky-Ad7897@reddit
I'm fine with the height for performance but that height with swan neck mounts is so ugly. Surely they could've found a slightly more stylish way to mount it lol.
YalamMagic@reddit
Swan necks are simply more effecient and effective than conventional mounts. Be glad that they didn't go with reverse swan necks.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
It's a wing designed to generate maximum downforce. Aerodynamics generally aren't pretty. It's designed with purpose. Those are arguably nicer swan neck mounts than a lot of aftermarket solutions I've seen.
knight_prince_ace@reddit
How difficult was your masters degree compared to your bachelor?
-have a bachelor in aerospace
FatMonkeyMilk@reddit
To be honest I didn't enjoy much of the bachelor but when doing the Masters I felt like my work was not only more interesting but also more respectable and valuable and fun
knight_prince_ace@reddit
Huh interesting. I was considering going for the masters but wasn't sure. Thanks for the reply
MSTmatt@reddit
Does adding rear grip really do anything in a FWD car?
SprackenZieEnglish@reddit
It might just be about reducing lift in the rear as opposed to making substantial downforce.
JEs4@reddit
The wing has several adjustments too for different tracks.
The car actually has the many of the meaningful changes amateur racers will make to their car: lighter brakes and wheels can completely change the handling, plus functional adjustable aero isn’t found in this class at all and is difficult to do in the aftermarket.
That said, Hyundai 8” wide wheels… what the fuck??
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Whats wrong with the wheels? 19 is an okay size. 18 is better but there are plenty of tire options in that size
T-Baaller@reddit
17x9 is the platonic ideal of wheel size.
gimpwiz@reddit
19x8 is practically speaking tall as hell for any normal car, we're just used to it because of appearances. You can fit 14" rotors and 6-piston calipers, set up for endurance racing, under a 18" wheel; why would a car with modest power and modest trackability need 19s from the factory? It results in more unsprung weight, more expensive tires, and worse ride quality on the street. Aesthetically speaking people demand it, but ...
But then 8" wide is quite narrow for, again, performance applications. You regularly see 18x10.5 wheels. Lots of meat. Fits big brakes. This is a wheel to, what? Fit bigger brakes than will ever be mounted but you're stuck with little narrow tires? That just doesn't make sense. Except for, again, aesthetics.
namesdevil3000@reddit
The 19s also mean that for road driving, flats and rim damage are more likely over bumps. The 19s will also most likely be heavier than 18s.
JEs4@reddit
The width. You can’t run a truly competitive tire on the car for track events. You’d ideally want something like 18x9.5 or 10.
Ok-Improvement-3670@reddit
I expect that was done for marketing.

seppuku_related@reddit
Of course it does. Why wouldn't it? Adding any kind of grip is going to be good.
MSTmatt@reddit
Increased downforce means increased drag.
If the stock EN isn't at the limit of grip for the rear tires already, then all you're doing with a huge wing is adding drag
Mydickisaplant@reddit
The engineers at Hyundai know more about this stuff than you do, brother.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Probably helps with stability and helping it rotate
element515@reddit
Still need grip in the rear for handling. Not like this is made to be a drag racing car

Cornering
simeddit@reddit
I don’t have a degree in this shit but I read an article about it as a kid lol
The higher up the wing (ie the further away from the body of the vehicle), the more effective the wing per degree of rake or something like that. Right?
Something about clean versus dirty air
I remember reading about the Chaparral 2E and how they kept jacking up the wing higher and higher until the air below it was basically clean with no low-pressure zones or something

high wings https://thejudge13.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/jackie-stewart-matra-kyalami.jpg
skagoat@reddit
One of the reason the Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds had such high wings.
s1harrison@reddit
i agree
Vvette45@reddit
So tell me how this exactly helps a Front wheel drive car?
AuDHDMDD@reddit
Braking and cornering
Vvette45@reddit
So there is no benefit at all for this vehicle. This isn't a car that can take corners at 150+MPH so there is literally no way this made the car perform any better even on a track. Its for looks only, Hyundai needs to stop pretending.
no_flair@reddit
I always thought it was so the wing doesn't obstruct the rearview which is why the wing is either low or really high like this and the wrx sti/evo/civic type r. Glad to know it is also somewhat functional even on a street car.
TurboFucked@reddit
Yeah, so the STI spoiler blocked out practically your entire rear view. It was definitely not designed with visibility in mind.
That being said, I don't think it was very functional either. It was 90% an homage to the rally cars heritage.
But yeah, the TCR wing is absolutely functional. A spoiler that provides meaningful down force at sub-triple-digit speeds is going to be high, wide, thin, and gooseneck. This meets all those criteria.
It looks to be adjustable too, which is important because they do kill high speed performance. Just changing the angle of attack can cause the car to drop like 3-4mph on higher speed straights.
FatMonkeyMilk@reddit
Btw it's a wing, not a spoiler! FYI. They're different
Suck_My_Thick@reddit
Well, aesthetically, it looks stupid on the body of a sedan.
TurboFucked@reddit
For a performance vehicle, what matters more: form or function?
I'm sure it will be easy to remove.
Landaimos@reddit
Despite having cleaner air there, It is also further away from the underbody, so whether it is more effective or not is debatable. Unless we see CFD, we cannot precisely determine the best height outside of aesthetics.
perkele_possum@reddit
If you're going to put a giant doofus wing on a FWD economy car then own it and put a GIANT doofus wing on. Might as well put on a bosozoku exhaust while you're at it since it's a limited model.
Unreachable1@reddit
Not sure that’s totally fair. The N is a pretty serious track worthy car.

48turbo@reddit
In the 1990 classic, Home Alone, the main protagonist "Kevin" says "woof" when looking at a picture of his brother's girlfriend.
Can't say the term was all that popular for a long time but it seems to be picking back up on social media. Maybe it's the cyclical nature of trends.
Teledildonic@reddit
Harrison Ford is using it in a current sitcom (Shrinking)
TheEpicBean@reddit
The "girlfriend" in the photo was not played by an actress, but rather by the art director Dan Webster's son in a wig. Director Chris Columbus deemed it too cruel to use a real girl for the joke.
smashingcones@reddit
Interesting, thanks for the context.
spooksmagee@reddit
"Woof" is just an older idiom for our modern "yikes."
DarkMatterM4@reddit
Maybe he thinks the wing looks ruff.
blue92lx@reddit
That's one of those things that makes sense on a track, and looks super try hard on the road. As soon as I saw the picture I thought to myself I wouldn't get it just because of the wing, or take the wing off if I got it.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Well its directly pulled from the TCR Race Car. Hence why its called a TCR lll
c172fccc@reddit
Not really, they’re not the same. The wing on the TCR race car looks much better.
jca_ftw@reddit
So now the only thing uglier than an Elantra N is an Elantra TCR.
ddaw735@reddit
That spoiler looks hideous lmao
40FlatSix@reddit
I love the proportions on my Elantra N and it does a great job of looking different enough from a normal Elantra without looking riced (especially in the maroon color which makes the red accents silver)… this looks like they shoved an autozone universal swan neck spoiler on it lol. Would have benefited from widened fenders or a shorter wing
thedogthatmooed@reddit
I adore that maroon color. I used to live near someone who had one. I was envious of it every time I saw it
d_student@reddit
How is the maintenance schedule on these? I'm sure it isn't crazy, but it's still a performance vehicle.
PerfectlyBoosted@reddit
It’s nothing different from most other cars really. They have shorter oil change intervals. @6k (which is when it should be changed on most cars imo) and if you get the dual clutch I believe there’s a trans fluid that you need to change. But I have a MT and it’s all been normal inexpensive car maintenance.
40FlatSix@reddit
Only thing I’d add is the Pilot Sport 4s tires that come stock have horrendous tread life if you are used to all seasons lmao (around 15k normally) Though this is more a summer tire/Michelin thing than a Hyundai thing. Mine are getting replaced at the end of summer with equivalent Continentals or Kumhos which have a better tread life (Supposedly around 20-25k)
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Thats weird the tire life is so bad. PS4S are supposed to last ~45k miles. I wonder why they don't last that long
I had the Sport Cup 2s on my GT350 and those were 12k miles lol
nova46@reddit
I don't know what the PS4S warranty is, but it's 45k on the PS AS4 or whatever the all season are called, and I got 25k out of them on my GTI. I kept up with my tire rotations and they honored the warranty by giving me half off a new set.
Rillist@reddit
If they're from the factory and came with the car they're always rubbish, which is why dealerships dont warranty factory tires. Full brand new replacements from michi will last 40k and have the warranty. My PS3+s tread lasted 5 years, they dry rotted before they wore out.
Tricky-Ad7897@reddit
Yeah I remember reading that OEM tires are engineered differently (usually for efficiency and noise reasons) even if they share a name with an off the shelf model, and usually that results in a shorter life.
PerfectlyBoosted@reddit
Yeah the N tires are “HN” version of the PS4S
randeus@reddit
My full brand new PS4S didn’t even last 20k.
TurboFucked@reddit
Hahahahahahahaha. I guarantee Michelin isn't going to actually warranty a set for 45k miles if they are put on anything remotely sporty.
You're not getting good tread life of a FWD, turbocharged performance car unless you drive it like a grandma and do lots of highway driving. It's the nature of the beast. These things can light up the front tires well into second gear on most surfaces, and cornering is already tough on front wheels.
StepSunBro@reddit
I got about 30k out of some ps4s on my stock sti.
randeus@reddit
The PS4S tires on my Mustang barely lasted 15k while in a square set-up. I mean, it doesn’t help being on a heavy car, but the tread life on them weren’t amazing from my experience.
Celsius1234@reddit
Same with mine i30n here in Europe.
d_student@reddit
Appreciate it. That sounds reasonable.
PerfectlyBoosted@reddit
You’re welcome! The only thing that I’ve seen be pricey is the tires. They come with michellin PS4s that can wear down pretty quick. I switched to continental DWS06+ for an all season performance tire and they are much better for daily driving. The michellin tires handled great though, I miss them.
ChapekElders@reddit
It’s a Hyundai so you can expect the engine or transmission to explode before 100K and be otherwise cheap to maintain before that.
GMOrgasm@reddit
wrong
my engine died on th highway at 102k thank you very much
but ya before that it was smooth sailing, no breakdowns or anything and now wont even start
im gonna go test drive some hondas today
randeus@reddit
What? The regular Elantra N looks pretty riced out from the factory.
ggtsu_00@reddit
The whole modern trend of factory riced out family sedans as sports cars is stupid. Just another avenue of cost cutting and enshittification while trying to put the squeeze on the aftermarket.
Storm_Chaser06@reddit
It looks bad but it actually has an effect
Zarrex@reddit
I think it could actually be cool if the car's styling backed it up, but it unfortunately does not in this case
ZanicL3@reddit
And I love it
NotThePrez@reddit
It's so bad, it's good.
Actually, it's still bad, but it's the kind of bad that you can't help but find oddly charming.
arcticrobot@reddit
this is wing, not spoiler. A pretty significant difference between two.
Ok-Improvement-3670@reddit
It’s a race car
Kneecap_Blaster@reddit
*inspired by a
Ok-Improvement-3670@reddit
It’s a part off of a race car. Have you done track days? The aero makes a difference. Something like this could help keep the weight needed on the rear wheels for lateral grip in cornering. They didn’t put it on there for looks. It’s actual race kit. I know people who track Hyundai N cars. They are legit. The team behind them is legit. They aren’t just some AMG package that people buy for a badge.
Kneecap_Blaster@reddit
Dude I'm not arguing that the aero doesn't work. I've been tracking my cars for 8 years, trust me we're on the same side.
All I'm saying is that this is objectively not a race car. It is a road car with inspiration taken from the TCR racecar. If it were a homologation special I'd call it a rececar, but it's literally an aero and brakes package, no cage, still has airbags and a ton of other normal car functions (HVAC, stereo etc.) that the racecar it's based off of doesn't have.
Ok-Improvement-3670@reddit
Fair enough. I think people on here see a wing and think it’s an appearance package.
Ill-Train6478@reddit
They test these in a wind tunnel. What you think and what the drag data tells are two different things. I know this because putting a corvette in a windtunnel always showed surprising results than what engineers or people thought before the test. Ex car designer
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
This is why whenever I get aero bits for a car I just buy whatever you see on the race cars.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
You can buy the TCR CTR parts from the HRC store. They bolt right onto the CTR.
Fishinabowl11@reddit
This is it. This is the car where, now, at age 40, I realize I could no longer accept boy racer looks. What a travesty this thing is. Riced out from the factory.
Senatorial@reddit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyundai_Elantra_N_TCR This is what Hyundai's actual race car looks like. You know, the one that does actual racing. This is what function looks like.
TurboFucked@reddit
And I'd drive the fuck out of this.
Some of us get old and stop caring what other people think of the things that make us happy. Big spoilers are my jam and so what if people think I'm driving around in my son's ride.

TurboFucked@reddit
I don't. I assume it's T Club Racer.
R0kyr@reddit
It stands for Touring Car Racing. The Touring Car classes are OEM-built, caged, big aero spec race cars but strictly FWD, small displacement. Think FWD versions of Porsche Cup, Super Trofeo, etc
The wing on this Elantra N is definitely a homage to TCR, and makes a lot of sense given the context.

At this point we just need to be happy companies are putting out manual, "performance-oriented" cars like this - wing or no wing.
TripleShotPls@reddit
But … does it drive like a CTR? It’s a serious question because the latest CTR is damn good from my understanding.
BobbyGT@reddit
I own a Civic Type R. I really dig this car. Trying to make really cool performance cars available for lower prices, I’m here for it. The only knock, those wheels look very cool…. But they could have made them a bit wider. Only 245s, might struggle for traction.
turboshadow05@reddit (OP)
Yeah, you can probably fit more wheel/tire on a normal EN. The bigger brakes will definitely limit aftermarket wheel selection.
DarkMatterM4@reddit
The EN also has god's lug pattern (5x114.3), giving it much more wheel options over the Type R's goofy ass 5x120.
TurboFucked@reddit
Goofy? A lot of manufactures moved to 5x120 for performance/high-power applications. It's not just the Type R, lots of other Honda/Acura products use it. C8 Corvette uses it now - as do the Cadillac V cars. And, of course BMW has used it forever.
It's not a niche bolt pattern anymore.
Captain_Alaska@reddit
I mean it's always been mostly exclusive to BMW and GM.
Basically all the other Japanese manufactures are 114.3x5 though, now that Subaru has moved on from their 5x100.
aprtur@reddit
Double edged sword - because 114 is more popular, there are more options, but they're also usually more expensive. I'm assuming it's for that reason why you can usually find fire sale prices on 120 PCD wheels.
Kryptus@reddit
My 85 Toyota pickup had 5x114 as well.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Yeah 245s is definitely a choice. I think thats what I have on my BRZ lol. My CTR I have 275s. Stick is 265s and when I got my trackday tire I went up a size above stock.
Im not sure what the TCR Race Car uses but it seems likr 245 is incredibly small
TurboFucked@reddit
You need added weight to make use of wider tires. Generally speaking, you'd adjust compound before adding width.
There's also the fact that the rim wide to tire wide ratio greatly influences handling and break-away characteristics of the car. So going wider might add more cornering capability, but it will also make the breakaway more abrupt. So for an OEM, going with a a wider tire means also going with wider wheels, which means changes to suspension geometry, hubs, potentially body panels, etc.
Hyundai might not have been able to justify the costs of the adjustments needed to go wider than 245 on such a niche car. I'm sure they wanted hit 265mm so they could be apples-to-apples with the CTR in the magazine reviews. But the current car is plenty competitive with it already, especially given the price discount.
Kryptus@reddit
BMW 3 series dtock 19" wheels come with 225 x 225 tires without an added package that adds 255 in the rear.
-serious-@reddit
Yeah, the EN absolutely struggles for traction. Still, its really fun to drive
TurboFucked@reddit
With the DCT, it still hits 60 in sub-5s though.
It struggles for traction, but it doesn't have nearly the amount of axle tramp a lot of early turbo FWD cars did. I don't think I've been in a stock FWD car that launched better than an EN.
bumphuckery@reddit
Remember folks, grip is not directly related to width. Width helps with wear and cooling and helping extend the track (car's tire to tire) width, but not necessarily grip. Most guys who don't beat the living shit out of tires for extended periods will simply be wasting money on wider rubber. Get nicer rubber with better specs before you get wider rubber with all else equal.
NonPoliticalAcct3646@reddit
Yep, I’m excited about any affordable performance car that isn’t an EV these days. They are a dying breed.
Kuby@reddit
Just means cheaper tires for daily stock rims.
d_student@reddit

Astramael@reddit
We’ve had these in Canada for a bit. They’re kinda sweet.
durrtyurr@reddit
That wing is certainly a choice. It is the most aftermarket-looking wing I've ever seen on a production car.
DarkMatterM4@reddit
I think the FL5 Type R wing looks pretty damn aftermarket too. The HFP wing on the standard Civic hatch looks much better.
Astramael@reddit
The CTR wing looks absolutely terrible. Some people do it body colour and it looks so much better. No idea why Honda didn’t do that from the factory.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Thats because it is lol. Its the wing on the Elantra TCR Race Car
ppppanda@reddit
They really need to remove/replace that spoiler. It does not suit the car and I'm sure it doesn't have enough power to require it.
It looks like it a teenager just watched fast and furious for the first time and slapped the biggest wing they could find on their mum's car.

The issue I have is as the price increases on this to make it ‘for the track’ at what point do you not just buy a platform better suited for the track?
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Well it depends on what you want. The Elantra N is already suited well for the track. There isn't much you really need to do, the biggest problem is just that its FWD
Because of the design it has better stock cooling than the CTR.

I know the wing would help no matter the drivetrain it’s just hilarious seeing that on a hyundai elantra

This comment section is making me realize why we see so much nonfunctional aero that only gives a go-fast teen racer look. SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Im all for functional aero. Love the race car look
UltraHawk_DnB@reddit
Sure, but it's not a type R tho is it?
Aggravating_Sky_4421@reddit
You’d think with an gigantic ugly (though functional) wing like that, it’d be RWD and have more than 300HP… neither is true.
hutacars@reddit
Is it actually comparable to a CTR? Or are they only comparing it to a CTR because it’s the only other FWD option in this category? Because if it’s the latter, I would take the GRC for about the same price. Same as I would against the regular EN, honestly. Obviously I haven’t driven a TCR, but I have driven an EN and can’t imagine tacking some bits onto it will improve it sufficiently to be better to drive than a GRC, much less a CTR.
NonPoliticalAcct3646@reddit
The GRC has a ton of drivetrain loss but it certainly does feel the “rawest” out of the 3 cars. When I drove one it reminded me of my old 2014 STi.
If you aren’t going to be tracking the car I always felt the CTR was too “serious” for the street, it is absolutely a better track car than the EN but my Camaro SS 1LE cost about as much as an FL5 and it is a far better track car than the FL5.

If you ignore the wing, looks like a pretty good deal. 4k for forged wheels and big brake kit is a bargain
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Lol right? Forged wheels are like +4k alone lol

Wow…didn’t think it was possible to make this thing any uglier.
Love the idea if this car and I’m sure it drives great, but man the looks are a dealbreaker.

The front and front 3/4 angles are growing on me but I dislike the rear angles. Even not a huge fan the standard spoiler and deletes aren’t easy to do.

Loved what they’re doing with the Elantra N, to point was comparison shopping it vs my M3 and recommending to friends. But fuck everything about Hyundai for killing that 2 year old

Hyundai's design language is awful. Hard to make a car uglier than the old Type-R, but here we are.

Holy ugly

The Elantra looks ugly but man it would look so cool with these mods. I'd be foaming to get one of these if I liked the design. I love it when OEMs do these track special edition cars and they put on parts from their racing program. GM and Porsche is very good with this, so its great to see Hyundai joining in. (Really hoping to see a release of the Honda/Acura with the HRC Integra Type S Prototype)
It cuts out alot of the 'trust me bro' arguments you see alot from aftermarket companies. The Elantra TC and TCR Racing teams and program have been very successful and pretty much every race they get podiums.
TC and TCR cars are more special because they are less modified and far more close to the road going variants than any GT4, GT3 or cup car (expect for the GR86 and Miata cup cars). TC is mostly just aftermarket power FBO and then the typical race car treatment like stripped interior, roll cage, fuel cell. But the mods are pretty minimal.
I think this would be a cool car to own. I'd consider getting one in the future.

Big yikes

Wow that wing looks terrible. And in the article it talks about "performance parts" being sold by Hyundai and then proceeds to mention accessories you can buy directly from Hyundai. I wouldnt consider accessories to be performance parts...

Looks like Hyundai using Porsche playbook for this model. TCR name is definitely its RS package.

Making those brakes available for the i30N hatch would be the only good thing to come from this
