Cholesterol Pills

So my Mom, sister and 2 Aunts all got dementia. The only common denominator is cholesterol pills. . .aka statins. When my mother had a stroke and I took her in for testing, the neurologist asked me if she was on cholesterol medicine after I expressed my concerns with her memory. When I told him yes, he said take her off of those they cause memory loss. Her regular doctor went against the neurologist and kept her on them. She is now on her 3rd year living in a nursing home. I would rather die at 55 with a heart attack than live the 11 years she has without a memory. That is all!

Im having kidney issues that might be connected to my statins, I just went through my bloodwork today and have a CT Scan next week - there's a lot of possible other reasons, but my statins is definitely on the list of things that could be causing me some reduced kidney function. I think they're good medicines but you've got to do your bloodwork and do your own research.
I get my blood done every quarter and I have for the last 20 years - every time I get a result I look up each one to see what it means - more than once i've called attention to an issue my doctor was not taking seriously or overlooking.
OP - im sorry your mom and your family is going through this. Good luck.

Could the common denominator be genetics?
grateful_john@reddit
Ya think? Nothing in common except genetics.

Whaaaaat?
changelingcd@reddit
The "only common denominator" besides genetics, age, lifestyle, diet, environment, etc....

my mom also did really bad on statins. her neuro took her off. she did better after a while. i dont think they are always considering quality of life, though of course i am not a medical profesional and cannot give medical advice

There are very promising studies showing that GLP-1 meds may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. Do with that what you will.

My mom had a bad reaction to statins - horrible leg pain that was so bad she could barely walk. This is why I refuse to take them and prefer to regulate my cholesterol via diet. Since I’ve been on a GLP-1 they’ve gone down.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Katt Williams got me all messed up about cholesterol. Did you know your brain is made of cholesterol? I have to take them - my cholesterol is always stupidly high. They say it’s fat that makes that happen but I’ve also read its sugar. Anyway without it my doctor says I will have a heart attack.
