ULPT: how do I get my money back from a FB Marketplace guy
Posted by FuzzyPeaches08@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 49 comments
I need advice on a Facebook Marketplace situation. I bought a hamper for $100, but when I got home, it reeked of cigarette smoke. The seller agreed to a return. He said he was out of town but drop it off with his roommate and he’ll venmo. Honestly seemed like a really nice honest dude. Apologized a lot and was quick to respond. But when I dropped it off as arranged, waited outside for him to Venmo me, and after an hour. He finally responded saying he would pay me after work. I thought sure this guy is nice and so I left (an hour drive) and now it’s been nearly a week and he’s completely ghosted me, and I’m out $100. I’ve messaged multiple times, and texted him, no response.
I know police won’t care and smal claims seems..well a hassle for $100, but it’s now a matter of principle, and honestly, money is tight. Any ideas?

So you're saying you have his physical address and his phone number? Do you have his full name, and his email address too?
You need to let us know what we have to work with.
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
I have his full name, address, and phone number. Unfortunately I’m lacking his birth certificate
ThisAppsForTrolling@reddit
Sign him up right now on Angie’s list for free estimates for any service you can think of. They will start calling tonight. Text him and be like if you don’t want more unsolicited calls send me back my hundred dollars. Then depending on how he responds or doesn’t sign him up for all of them no matter what. Free roof estimate free window estimate life insurance health insurance interest in timeshares anything you can possibly think of the possibilities are endless.

Apply for a personal loan in his name! So. Many. Calls.

And please don’t forget to consider his spiritual life! I’m sure the Mormons and probably the Scientologists would like to know how to reach him. Maybe some others, too?
HotSaucePalmTrees@reddit
Put his phone number down for interest in home inspections. When we bought our house, I was getting 6+ calls a day for 4+ months from home inspection services. It’s kind of the reason my phone is on vibrate / silent 24/7 now and I am always missing calls but I digress…

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but sending a "Do this or else" message could get OP in legal hot water.
Hitch08@reddit
Add to that list car moving/transportation companies. There are a bunch of brokers around. They will call and text him for months.
A_S_Levin@reddit
Abstractly threaten him. Just remind him you know his name/exact location and action will be taken.
Worked for me/my sister once recently, scared some guy into refunding her. And i didn't even have his address, was just bluffing that.
Using an anonymous FB is ideal.

You can file a claim in small claims court if you're so inclined.

No ULPTs for Karens, sorry
JimmyBallocks@reddit
Public toilet. Sharpie. Write “send me pics of your turds” + his number on a cubicle wall.
Party-Confusion3728@reddit
Publicly shame him that worked for me when someone literally ripped me off on marketplace years ago. Their family member messaged saying that that's they rip everybody off and called her & ended up paying me back the next day. She left me my only one star that i'm still p* about!🤣
Flux_My_Capacitor@reddit
Make a Craigslist ad saying he needs old toilets and sinks for an art project and they can be left on the lawn, no need to knock.
meadowmbell@reddit
It didn't stink until you drove it an hour home?
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
I have a pick up and it was in the bed of the truck
Odd_Alps_7468@reddit
I think the proper ULPT's have already been mentioned, but please appease my adhd addled brain with these two things I can't figure out:
1: What goddamn hamper costs significantly more than $100(USD?) to be worth picking up a used one?
2: Why is any amount of savings worth it for you to buy a used hamper?! The cigarette smoke was probably doing you a favor by covering up all the normal smells one would associate with things that go in a goddamn "dirty clothes hamper"
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
Looked cool, Japanese mid century looking. I was trying to get my GF a cool piece for our apartment.
It looked clean in the photos tbh. But yeah definitely not doing that again.
AndrewMasta@reddit
I would reconsider your gift choice. While you may think it’s thoughtful, imagine how your girl is gonna feel getting a hamper for her bday gift. Dont say I didn’t warn you.
yahziii@reddit
Not just any hamper, a dirty hamper.
Special_opps@reddit
Not just any dirty hamper, a dirty used smoker's hamper
Y0USER@reddit
As soon as you leave a fb marketplace transaction it’s yours. You didn’t smell it when you bought it?
Harvest827@reddit
One hundred dollars for a hamper? like a thing you put your dirty clothes in? you paid one hundred dollars for a box to put your dirty clothes in?
awolflikeme@reddit
You have is address. What the fuck else do you want from us other than a spine.
Elegant_Priority_@reddit
Can I see what a $100 hamper looks like
Miserable_Wish_465@reddit
Consider the $100 a stupid tax and move on with your life.
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
Fair
SkinnBanana@reddit
Who the fuck buys a hamper for 100? Does it do the laundry and put it away too? A fool will be easily parted from his money
TeslaNova50@reddit
Especially with someone who says 'money is tight'. Dude drives an hour to pick it up, another hour to return it and gives it back without getting the money. Story is complete bullshit.
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
Yeah I fucked up. Just trying to impress the ol battle axe
HardCoreNorthShore@reddit
"The ol battle axe"?
Wow, repulsive.
sorrynotsorry922@reddit
Don’t beat yourself up too much. Unfortunately, it happens to the best of us. We all want to hope that the people we deal with are fair and above board, but sometimes they aren’t. I got similarly scammed.
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
Thanks man 🙏
bobby5557@reddit
We all pay the tax in life
musickismagick@reddit
This is the right answer.
live_drifter@reddit
You bought a $100 hamper with an hour drive from Facebook marketplace…. You deserve to lose the money cause it was “stinky”
TaskPerfect5830@reddit
If you share his address we could get some manure shi(p)t to his house
maxpowerAU@reddit
Leaning on the “unethical” part of this sub: take a gunn to his house and shoot him in one knee. Promise to do the other one if he doesn’t transfer $100 to you immediately. You may need to help him get his phone, if he didn’t have it on him initially
partylikeitis1799@reddit
Could they just still be out of town? If it’s been less than a week I wouldn’t stress about it yet. Who wants to deal with refunding a used hamper purchase while on vacation?
canadachris44@reddit
Scam him. Somehow find what hes buying and rip him for the money
Crispynipps@reddit
So you bought something used, and took it home even though it was stinky when you met the dude? Idk, you can be upset, but this is your fault too.
bobby5557@reddit
piss disk
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
What’s that?
turdburgalr@reddit
I prefer to spell it piss disc. It's a running joke on this sub. Get something like a pizza pan or baking sheet, fill it with piss, freeze it, then slide the frozen disc under the gap on his door. Fucking gross and hilarious. I always imagine someone trying not to spill it putting it in the freezer.

Milk bomb. Curious, let a 2 gallon jug of milk sit in the sun for 2 weeks open it and pour 1/3 out. Place an entire roll of mentos in it then buy a 12 ounce soda water. Add the soda water to the jug and shake it (WITH THE LID ON. Place it at the base of the door and poke a small hole in it with a knife so it sprays in under the door. The smell will be god awful for weeks….. old dorm room pranks.
SkinnBanana@reddit
I need more info on this hamper, OP. What makes this thing worth 100$ SECONDHAND???
FuzzyPeaches08@reddit (OP)
I fucked up for sure. It was cool looking but yeah…
iLikeAza@reddit
Send a Venmo request. See if he responds. Say you will file a claim with the sheriffs office in two days time. Hopefully he sends it back Next time get a $20 hamper from IKEA or Target
ralanolson@reddit
You could have bought a brand new hamper for that price. I would sign him for everything I could think of.
