Incident at KBDN

Happened today at KBDN. The pilot is okay from what I've been told. Apparently he just slammed on the breaks? If anyone knows anything more, I'd be curious to know as well.

Bend Municipal Airport (ICAO: KBDN, FAA LID: BDN) is six miles (9.7 km) northeast of Bend, in Deschutes County, Oregon. The FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2009–2013 categorizes it as a general aviation facility. Bend is home to Epic Aircraft and X-Air.

I heard from a CFI who saw it happen- veered left landing 16, overcorrected back right, dragged the wing across the runway and flipped.
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
Thank you! That lines up with what I heard from someone else.
pattern_altitude@reddit
Stuff did break, but I'm guessing the pilot slammed on the brakes.
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
Thank you. I'll stick to flying instead of spelling lol
cbrookman@reddit
Damn it, Jim! I’m a pilot, not an orthographer!

JANET is in Vegas...

The things Janet can't tell you about.

Just Another Non-Existent Terminal

Before they even turn the key, before they make a mistake...wait, no, mistake definitely made
zemelb@reddit
Absolutely did not expect a Dear Evan Hansen reference in these comments. Bravo sir/ma’am.
Actual_Environment_7@reddit
Maybe, but that wouldn’t put it in its back. A Champ’s cable-actuated Cleveland brakes offer only a mere suggestions of deceleration.
Due-Letterhead6372@reddit
Its very common to upgrade the brakes on these old champs
Bill92677@reddit
Must have been hell of an upgrade. "This thing feels like it could stop on a dime!"
Actual_Environment_7@reddit
And these have not been upgraded. They’re clearly the original Cleveland mechanical drums.
Various-Blood-3902@reddit
More like slammed on the breaks (ba dum tss)
RogLatimer118@reddit
Aerobatics require some altitude.
West-Organization450@reddit
That sucks! I’ve never flown a Champ with good enough brakes to do that!
UnreasoningOptimism@reddit
It's not supposed to look like that
SirKillalot@reddit
I'm confused at how they ended up with enough speed to do this on a taxiway, even if they did stand on the brakes.
I can definitely imagine picking the tail up braking too hard at taxi speeds, to the point of a prop strike, but I feel like it would take quite a bit more energy to get it all the way around onto its roof like that. How fast were they going?
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
It's right next to the fuel farm immediately off of the Alpha taxi way. Maybe he was distracted, or the plane got away from him and he suddenly realized he was next to a lot of fuel so he suddenly and aggressively stood on the brakes? I have no idea, I can only guess.
Maldivesblue@reddit
So planes in Bend don’t have to have N numbers?
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
If you zoom in you can see the spot where i blocked it out. Just out of privacy considerations, idk.
atthemattin@reddit
Pretty little champ. I bet they have the Cleveland mod for the brakes, which really make the brakes work well.
CharAznableLoNZ@reddit
He must have really jammed on the brakes. Apparently he was taxiing a bit fast.
debauchasaurus@reddit
Kinda surprised the prop isn't more obviously damaged if it was spinning.
MaterialDull9480@reddit
Wheel landings, do not touch the brakes until the tail is down
Mispelled-This@reddit
Looks like a taxiway, though?
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
Yeah, by the fuel pumps.
7w4773r@reddit
You can definitely brake with the tail up, just not so hard that it does this.
MaterialDull9480@reddit
Depends on the tailwheel actually. But yes you have to stomp on it for a nose over.
LRJetCowboy@reddit
Well it’s clear that his nose wheel fell off, that’s the problem.
flyin_lynx@reddit
The front fell off?
_Sixteen@reddit
Nose wheel fell back to the tail
fuckman5@reddit
Sir, this isn't Australia
Mad_Rooster_7164@reddit
BECAUSE I WAS INVERTED
After-Tax-5963@reddit
Was the pilot trying to kick flip his plane?
Oregon-Pilot@reddit
I used to fly out of a hangar on that same taxiway. That taxiway is slightly sloped, so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it.
Mispelled-This@reddit
Don’t ruin our fun with facts.
kennedye2112@reddit
The floor jack and the dolly, are they just gonna roll it out of there?
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
No clue.
MockCheckrideDotCom@reddit
Whoopsies! Glad it was just something minor.
When I first read the headline, I thought we'd be looking at a midair or runway incursion. Bend is a mess and an awful incident waiting to happen.
ChocoChipBets@reddit
You can’t park there mate
chairman_of_thebored@reddit
A guy at KDNL overran the runway earlier today due to his brakes not working. He’s ok. Not sure about the plane. Weird day for brakes
richardizard@reddit
Looks like that plane drank too much fuel last night
SpartanDoubleZero@reddit
Wild to see a fixed gear pull off a gear up landing.
Grytr1000@reddit
Wheels up landing. Happens all the time.
Hokie_Pilot@reddit
I have flown many planes and jets, C172/DA20/T6/T1-A/etc…but the handling characteristics of tailwheel planes scare me LOL
HybridVW@reddit
N- number?
angryshark@reddit
Had a fellow solo student pilot do this in her own 172 while I was in the pattern overhead. Landed too fast and instead of a go around, slammed on the brakes to avoid going over the ledge at the end of the runway.
She was shook up but ok fortunately, and kept on with her training after a short while. I think daddy was paying for the training.
Showed me first hand how quickly things can go south in aviation.
MaybeBowtie@reddit
Oh it’s a tail wheel. Yeah slamming on the brakes’ll do that. I thought it was a nose wheel at first and thought that that would be impossible.
grwatplay9000@reddit
Missed it by that much ...
aw_shux@reddit
Ah, the dreaded vertical ground loop!
FridayMcNight@reddit
Yeah, that'll do that.
FapItLikeYouStoleIt@reddit
You can't park there.
Sticky_Corvid@reddit (OP)
I'll let them know.
