Most Iconic Dish in Dallas?
Posted by Corgisarethebest123@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 221 comments
If someone was visiting from out of town, what is the one dish at a restaurant you would recommend they try before leaving?
Cu77eR@reddit
yoohoo yehaw at single or double wide, Lakewood landing corndog. the burger at adairs saloon
_ze@reddit
I recognize the culture in you. Respect.
Cu77eR@reddit
I almost felt dirty like im revealing well kept secrets so im kinda glad were down low in the replys lol.
_ze@reddit
I appreciate that as well and will continue to check back on this thread and change my upvote to a downvote, as needed.
PumpkinCarvingisFun@reddit
So there is a big difference between best dish to try when they are in town and "iconically dallas". Which are you really looking for?
Corgisarethebest123@reddit (OP)
Best dish to try when they are in town.
PumpkinCarvingisFun@reddit
Please update if you end up trying the suggestions I provided!
PumpkinCarvingisFun@reddit
I'll give you a few in no particular order, but this is a very solid list:
Street_Celery2745@reddit
Javier’s quail
SBTHorn@reddit
Absolutely, and you can get a solid margarita along with it!
Jiola09@reddit
Also Javiers cigar bar is a Dallas must see!
Dino_Juice_Extractor@reddit
Great answer
captainn_chunk@reddit
Cultured
privilegelog@reddit
Crazy I had to scroll this far for this. Absolutely correct.
Electrical_Long_4222@reddit
Stuffed Leeks at Mot Hai Ba.
Not only the best thing I've ever eaten in Dallas, but realistically one of the top 5 things I've ever eaten anywhere.
j_husk@reddit
Just looked it up - sounds great. Added to my list to try.
Electrical_Long_4222@reddit
They've blown up in the last few months and getting a reservation can be tough. They'll have late night slots open most weekdays though.
DougDons@reddit
What’s happened in the last few months? Mot Hai Ba has been around for a while and I feel like it’s always been a tough reservation although we haven’t been out in a long time. Or maybe I’m showing my age since it’s still a “hot spot” in my mind .
Electrical_Long_4222@reddit
We're regulars and noticed the change early in the year. We've asked a few of the staff and they noticed it too, but couldn't point to any one thing driving the uptick in popularity.
At our last visit a couple of weeks ago our favorite waiter told us that 65% of their reservations were coming from first-timers which is wild. I'm very happy for them.
Intelligent_Shift250@reddit
My son showed me the leeks on IG and I’m so gonna try them.
Responsible-File3008@reddit
yissssss
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
We gotta go back in time for the burger at The Grape or the queso at Cuba Libre, lol.
lordb4@reddit
Hadn't thought of Cuba Libre in years. Miss that place.
FrankDr3bin@reddit
same and man, do I miss it more than ever now.
ApprehensiveAnswer5@reddit
I think about the queso every time I feel like grabbing queso somewhere lol.
My husband is a chef, he has the old CL recipe from a cook who used to work in that kitchen, and he makes a great queso but it’s not THE queso.
I’m ridiculous hahah
emilier98@reddit
I miss that place too….the plantain chips with the dipping sauces. I would devour those like they were my last meal.
Agreeable-Training-6@reddit
Filet Canteflas at Javiers
Fit-Lengthiness-7396@reddit
Tupy Taco from Tupinamba
Bear_Magnus@reddit
Most Iconic to Dallas? Probably a frozen margarita.
Most memorable for someone out of town? Probably one of our top BBQ spots, a Jimmy's sandwich, or starship bagel in my opinion. It also very much depends on what part of Dallas they are visiting.
Still_Detail_4285@reddit
Tough to recommend an Italian sandwich or bagel when other cities have a long history with those foods.
Bear_Magnus@reddit
Starship Bagel was a finalist for the James beard award (the American food award) for best national bakery last year. They consistently win national awards at bagel competitions.
Jimmy's has been there for 60 years. I think that's enough of a 'long history'.
dorisday1961@reddit
Is sandwich place just called Jimmy’s?
Suitable_Cycle4216@reddit
You HAVE to get the Italian stallion
larue708@reddit
Jimmy's Food Store

Gloria’s bean dip
AccordingFox9168@reddit
Javier’s - Filet Cantinflas. Bob’s - Cajun Blackened Ribeye (not on the menu) Maple Motor - Cheeseburger Pink. Nonna - White Clam Pizza Louie’s- Pizza Katie Trail - Cheeseburger and Fries Snuffers - Spicy battered chicken strips and cheese fries Mia’s - Brisket Tacos Jimmy’s Food - Cuban Wabi House - Spicy Miso Bubba’s - Fried Tenders Baby Back Shak - Boudain / Boudin Al Biernet’s - Buffalo Filet La Salsa Verde - every taco on the menu Meat Shop - Brisket Hoagie Kuby’s - Jalapeño Pimento Cheese Royal China - Dan Dan Noodles
StRemedius@reddit
Oh, that's EASY. Take them to the Maple Leaf Diner at LBJ and Preston and have them try the chicken-fried-steak poutine. I'm usually not fond of chicken-fried steak, but this is truly impressive. (My only caveat is that this is best eaten before a long road trip or before a big workout later in the morning, because boy howdy will you need to work it off. That's why I usually get it for my birthday.)
Brapmatic@reddit
RIP The Grape’s Cheeseburger
GildedPistachio@reddit
That mushroom bisque too 🤌
Jiola09@reddit
OMG, how did I forget about The Grape?? 😭😭😭
viazcon78@reddit
Their creme brûlée was the best I’ve ever had. I miss The Grape.
Still_Detail_4285@reddit
I still think about the Grape at least once a week.
Temporary-Round653@reddit
There are a lot that come to mind, but definitely the Cubano sandwich from Bella Flan in Richardson! To die for!
kitsunegoon@reddit
Brisket from Cattleack
Temporary-Round653@reddit
Definitely! Everything at Cattleack is so good! Best brisket, burnt ends and potato salad I've ever had.
floofenthusiast@reddit
It’s insane to me how anyone can have a barbecue conversation in Dallas and recommend fucking Terry Blacks when Cattleack exists
CryptoBasicBrent@reddit
I mean they're only open for like 5 seconds compared to Terry blacks, and Terry Blacks has better Turkey. Terry blacks is also across the street from Pecan Lodge so how do you not just recommend that?
The truth is just about all of the good BBQ spots in Texas are above a 9 out of 10. You're just arguing whether they're a 9.4 or a 9.6.
Chemical_Support4748@reddit
Lol nah
Thetrufflehunter@reddit
Where do you come down on hutchin's?
floofenthusiast@reddit
I say this without going to Goldees, Hurtado, or Lockhart yet so keep that in mind. But as of now, Cattleack, Hutchins, Pecan Lodge, Sammy’s, Terry Black’s, Hard8, Oak’d is my ranking in order. (I will give TB’s a bit of grace as I have only just realized that I’ve only had it when my office orders it for luncheons so it may not have been the freshest and I will make it a point to have it in house)
kitsunegoon@reddit
I like this ranking
TheFeedMachine@reddit
Cattleack is open 3 days a week, Wednesday through Friday. Cattleack is lunch only. Cattleack is in Farmer's Branch. Terry Black's is open 7 days a week. Terry Black's is open for lunch and dinner. Terry Black's is in Deep Ellum.
If someone is visiting from out of town, Terry Black's is the best option to give them. If they ask for the best barbecue, you give give them Cattleack or Goldees or Hutchins or whatever. A generic tourist who hasn't had high end Texas barbecue will love it just as much and it will be much more convenient for them.
Responsible-File3008@reddit
Fair point, but also Terry Blacks is a chain. The original is from Austin. Cattleack is better and is “ours”
Fiss@reddit
The problem is it’s 20x easier to get Terry Blacks than it is to get cattleack. Terry blacks is 90% as good and 20x easier to just go and get it any day, any time
Codee33@reddit
I love the brisket, but I like the ribs even more. Love Cattleacks! Wish BBQ wasn’t expensive so I could more often then I do.
dorisday1961@reddit
All bbq so expensive! I don’t live near dfw anymore and live in nw Houston but my Gawd!!
Codee33@reddit
Exactly my point… it’s not a dog at Cattleack specifically, it just kinda sucks that BBQ in general is expensive.
soonerfreak@reddit
And a piece of crack cake.
blade_runner2050@reddit
Las Palmas fajitas
Dynamic_Duo_215@reddit
I like the city of Dallas but the food is not good. Im from Philly and really just be eating to survive. SMMFH
throwredditoraway@reddit
Sorry this has to be a troll because what food are we lacking in DFW that Philly has or does so much better?
Dynamic_Duo_215@reddit
Give me some suggestions
TheFifthPhoenix@reddit
Tbf I could imagine they do cheesesteaks better than us, but besides that…
PigeonPegleg@reddit
From Philly too. Troll for sure. Food scene here is great.
Dynamic_Duo_215@reddit
Definitely some of the worst pizza ever. Soul food is hit or miss. BBQ and seafood 👍🏾 Jamaican food is hit or miss.
TheFifthPhoenix@reddit
Has to be one of the worst takes I’ve ever heard
Acrobatic_Report9055@reddit
Cheeseburger. In East Dallas, it’s Kellers or The Dairy-Ette for iconic/old school. Goodfriend or Burger Schmurger for a modern take.
youpizzashit@reddit
only the kellers on nw highway though. the one on garland doesn’t taste the same and also the drive-in aspect of the nw highway location with a corona really adds to it.
Acrobatic_Report9055@reddit
Yeah. For sure. Dairy-Ette is also hit or miss. They’re just classic spots. Dairy-Ette still makes their own root beer. It’s an experience.
Chemical_Support4748@reddit
Idk.. Keller's kinda went down hill.
emilier98@reddit
Can’t forget Hunky’s on Cedar Springs.
Chemical_Support4748@reddit
Mcds... It's really terrible
Intelligent_Shift250@reddit
Chicken Fried Steak from Celebration.
h-ak@reddit
Uchi - fried milk
Corgisarethebest123@reddit (OP)
Uchi is from Austin :/
Responsible-File3008@reddit
So is Terry blacks but everyone’s throwing that out.
Corgisarethebest123@reddit (OP)
Uchi has 16 locations around the country. Terry Black’s has 5 locations only in Texas.

Campisi’s (Egyptian Pizza) slice
PumpkinCarvingisFun@reddit
Their food is absolute trash.
xoxo_angelica@reddit

thedrunkknight@reddit
What happened to the food? I used to work at the one in Plano when I was in highschool. I thought it was good. That was 20 years ago though
charliej102@reddit
Nothing. Dallas is home to chain restaurants. Might as well choose Le Madeline, Chili's, or Wingstop.
Responsible-File3008@reddit
Those are great suggestions!
Even_Talk_1968@reddit
Brisket and Fajitas are the 2 most Dallas iconic
Responsible-File3008@reddit
Brisket, fajitas, frozen margaritas! Brisket, fajitas, frozen margaritas!
yourdailyorwell@reddit
Cheddar cheese fries from Snuffers.
Jiola09@reddit
I’m going to counter with Rodeo Goats cheese fries. Soooo good!
p8nt_junkie@reddit
They used to be so much better, but that was before they remodeled at the original location. Back when it was haunted and Red Jacket was across Martel.🤘
shitp0stspectacular@reddit
IIRC they completely demolished the original and rebuilt.
p8nt_junkie@reddit
Yeah, that’s right. That is the Dallas way of ‘building improvement’
FunkmasterFo@reddit
Instant heart attack LOL but so damn good
Diligent_Advisor_128@reddit
This is the one
UrinalMint@reddit
Once upon a time, the Bob Armstrong at Mattito's.
Now? Snuffers cheddar fries IMO.
number231@reddit
Bob Armstrong Dip is actually from Austin’s Matt’s El Rancho. Matt Jr move to a Dallas and had several Matt’s Rancho Martinez spots around DFW that brought the dip with it. Mattito’s is a failed partnership with Matt Jr. years before he passed of cancer. You can still order a Bob at the Matt’s in Allen. I go there for the cheese enchiladas.
UrinalMint@reddit
Well no shit, I was ignorant about El Rancho. Adding to my visit list for the next time I'm up there!
Radixx@reddit
If they like frozen margaritas maybe Mariano’s. They were invented there (although at their original location).
radarksu@reddit
Mariano Martinez invented the Frozen Margarita Machine.
He did not invent the margarita, or even the frozen margarita. He got tired of his blenders failing and the bar tenders didn’t like the amount of time it took to blend a frozen margarita. So, he had the idea to modify a Slurpee Machine, to get the colder temperature required to make margarita ingredients freeze into a slushy texture.
No more burnt up blenders, quicker serving time for the bartenders.
Rakebleed@reddit
Slurpee is also an iconic Dallas dish. 7/11 was founded here
RandomRageNet@reddit
Slurpees are just licensed ICEEs. They're not even from here. Which I guess is kind of fitting if you're trying to pick something to represent Dallas.
icheinbir@reddit
Can we claim southwest egg rolls since Chili's started here?
Liberteabelle1@reddit
Love those!
arlenroy@reddit
I had a coworker who had the hook up on those, his brother in law was a delivery driver for Ben E. Keith, they supply a ton of appetizers for fast casual restaurants. A company like Chili's formulates the food item, and then bids out suppliers to prepare and deliver it. He'd get these chicken wing kits, frozen wings a the seasoned batter mix, thaw out the wings and make the batter (I think it was just water and oil?), he'd bake the wings first so they're just about fully cooked, then batter and deep fry them. Holy. Shit. I don't know how the restaurant prepared them, but these things were the perfect spice level and crunchy yet still juicy. Its nice to know people who work for restaurant suppliers.
Liberteabelle1@reddit
Wow, love it!
Rakebleed@reddit
I’m voting yes. At the very least the Oldtimer w/ cheese was on the original menu.
Const1892@reddit

boyyouguysaredumb@reddit

FranksGun@reddit
Steak fajita meal and margs. Just doesn’t get much better
hamlet_d@reddit
Happy to see this near the top. Their steak fajitas are the best I've ever had anywhere.
FloatDoggie@reddit
Fantastic fajitas too
Designerfrog@reddit
Mariano’s! When the adult kids come in from Cali they always want Mariano’s!
Pale_Still3462@reddit
their frozen margs are pretty good but man, the food there is just okay tbh. if someone's visiting i'd probably send them for some proper bbq instead - way more iconic for texas than frozen drinks
Dmtz214@reddit
Not sure why you got downvoted but I agree. I get it…they were invented here but I’d go for a food dish rather than just a drink
p8nt_junkie@reddit
Where you getting that ‘proper’ bbq in Dallas County, nephew?
captainn_chunk@reddit
OP do not listen to this person. They clearly ordered chicken tenders
Complex_Win_5408@reddit
It was so much better pre-Covid.
number2stunna@reddit
Their fajitas are absolute fire. I think they have the best steak fajitas in Dallas.
tjspeed@reddit

Bogie41@reddit
As an east Dallas kid who moved away long ago, I’m going cheese enchilada plate at El Fendi
bromosabeach@reddit
Not from Dallas so maybe I can answer this.
Right now it’s places like Hutchins because they’re all over social media. When people outside of Texas think of Dallas, they think of big BBQ places like this.
Weirdly not very many people on the coast know anything about Tex-Mex. That was actually a shocker moving here.
kjsvaughan1@reddit
When I first moved to Connecticut I asked some random guy where the best Mexican food was in town. His response? “Taco Bell.” I knew then and there I had moved to restaurant hell. Thankfully, I moved back to Texas and have now been here the last 22 years.

As a Dallas native, the first thing I thought of was the carrot at Bob’s steakhouse. Maybe “iconic” is the wrong word but most out of towners are sort of like “huh…that’s a carrot” when it gets out it front of them. I get the impression it’s not something served anywhere else.
Educational_Front329@reddit
The first time I went to Bob's the carrot freaked me out. I now just order "no carrot"

Rudys?

If you mean Rudy’s Mexican restaurant that would be a great answer, but they are in Irving and closed back in October. If you mean Rudy’s bbq. It’s from San Antonio originally and fine at best. Pretty good brisket tacos in the morning.

The Blue Corn Pancakes at Encina in Oak Cliff.

To me Dallas is a Cheeseburger, fries, and sushi. At the same time with a cocktail. That’s just the vibe.
But for a single “dish” go to Pecan Lodge for BBQ. They are about the only hometown place. Everything else is a chain or from NY/Vegas/LA/Asia
I would have said go to Meddlesome Moth for the bone marrow but landlords took that one.
Phynub@reddit
> But for a single “dish” go to Pecan Lodge for BBQ. They are about the only hometown place. Everything else is a chain or from NY/Vegas/LA/Asia
What? Might as well go to Dickeys for BBQ.
Apprehensive_Law_234@reddit
I went to a 4th of July backyard barbecue at the Dickey's house when I was a kid in the 1970s. First bites of barbecue ribs were heavenly and part of why I still love barbecue to this day. I wish the restaurants were even remotely close to what Mr. Dickey could cook in his backyard......
jdr420777@reddit
wtf that’s crazy cool lol.

Pecan Lodge has slipped from their glory days, but isn't it a bit overdramatic to say it's as low as Dickey's?

To be clear, the "Egyptian" has nothing to do with the name of the restaurant or the food. The old "Egyptian" signage was what the original restaurant was when the Campisisi's bought it, and left up by popular demand.
