Who else owns a bike that’s old enough to be a millennial?

I only ride my 37 year old bike about six times a year but today I realized how old my “bike I got in college” was. The biggest difference is the distance I can ride went from 40 miles to 15 if I’m lucky with the Florida heat. Only went 10 today and it was only 90° so that doesn’t bode well for summer.

I still own and use my bike that I got when I was 14. only new bike I have ever gotten. I have replaced the seat for a more comfortable ride.

I’m 12” taller than when I was 14 so I’d have a bit of an issue.

Just built up a Trek 420 from 1989. American made USA frame. Smooth ride. Does anyone else like old school down tube shifters? 🚵♂️

I have a 1985 Nikishi 10 speed. Haven't been on it in 15 years... tires are probably rotten at this point.

My Gary Fisher mountain bike is from ‘98. I put all new derailleur components on a couple years ago. I almost bought a Yeti that was on clearance, but it was still super expensive and I don’t ride it the way I used to, so can’t justify it. I’ll keep my current one a bit longer but I think my next bike will be an e-bike.

I have a 1996 BMW Folding Mountain Bike from the Summer Olympics, I also have 1991 Nashiki Manitoba Black with bright green letters. I still ride both regularly. But that BMW is heavy beast.

I've got tshirts old enough to be a Millennial 🤪

It's in rough shape from living outside for decades, but I still have the Raleigh 10 speed I got for my 13th birthday. So, yeah, 41 years ago.
om_hi@reddit
I have a schwinn that's older than me. It was my mom's from high school. It's solid Gen X.
Got_Bent@reddit
I bought myself a bike at Zayres. Brown Columbia 10-speed. I rode that bike for part of high school until I met my wife and we moved in together. Rode it to work for a few seasons and my car for winter or rain. I think it ended up at the Salvation Army?
hvacigar@reddit
My Gary Fischer is a 1999 model.
HistoricalTowel1127@reddit
I still enjoy a ride. 77 Moto (made in France). Brooks saddle. I mostly see adults ride. Shame.

1941 Schwinn wants to be home from the ride in time for Matlock.

I have a Specialized Stumpjumper from the first year they were produced - 1981. My dad bought it from a co-worker in 1984 and I've been riding it ever since.

Mine was 1990 when I went away to college. It's in the basement, can't recall the last time I rode it
Astronaut6735@reddit
I have a 2006 Trek road bike that I haven't ridden in probably 5 years. I should dust it off, tune it up, and get some exercise.

That’s what I tell myself every couple of months.

Nice Panasonic
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
Thanks, the biggest gift from my parents (and last) so it’s a keeper.
Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
I had a friend in the late 80's that had a Panasonic - I used to tease him, asking if he got free with a radio purchase! Turns out it was a helluva bike!
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
I remember thinking “Panasonic makes bikes” when I was looking into buying it.
Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
Both Panasonic and Bridgestone ( the tire company) made great bikes! I was rocking a Schwinn Super Le Tour at the time, having upgraded from a Ross.
slater_just_slater@reddit
I have a bikes old enough to be retired boomers.

I still own the Cannondale mountain bike I purchased in 1988.

Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
Single Track 800 Antelope?
breddy@reddit
8000 SHX. I replaced the elastomer shock with a period correct (ish) Judy a few years ago that just happens to be the same yellow.
Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
I miss the Judy and Manitou shocks of the late 90's

MenehuniGav@reddit
My bike is almost Gen X
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
That’s impressive, I tell myself that my older heavier bike just makes me exercise harder.
MenehuniGav@reddit
It’s an ‘86 Trek 700 Tri-Series. All steel tubing and first generation index shifting. I love it. Will have it till I die.
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
I like my modern bike. I used to be a bike mechanic and appreciate the improvements modern components bring.
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
I can’t justify a new one since I don’t ride that much and I know one that will fit my 6’4” frame can get up there in price. I envy disc brakes though.
lionbacker54@reddit
Mine is 38 yrs old. It went to college with me, medical school, and every state I’ve ever lived in. I competed in two triathlons with it, and feel it was a competitive advantage because how light it was. I will never replace it
MovingTarget-@reddit
My childhood twelve speed is sadly long gone. (yep, twelve! It was fancy!)
Pug_867-5309@reddit
I have a circa 1990 Trek 2300 carbon fiber road bike. She's a beaut. Just rode her 20 miles a few days ago...good as new!
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
Mine definitely could use new wheels and brakes but the wobbles give it character.
hkusp45css@reddit
Why do you have so many frisbees?
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
I play disc golf and also kayak by a local course to find trash and lost discs. If they have a name on them I return them but many aren’t so I’ve collected more than a bit
200Fathoms@reddit
Jeez, how tall are you?!
Sufficient-Pin-481@reddit (OP)
6’4”. I’m on the short side for this model.
Correct-Condition-99@reddit
I've got a 25 year old mountain bike.
Scoobysnax1976@reddit
Not quite old enough to be a millennial. I still have a hard tail mountain bike from 1999.
