Does anyone else find themselves shaking milk before pouring? What are other examples of obsolete hardwiring?
i-am-jjm@reddit
I agitate any liquid before dispensing. Some say I agitate people by my presence too.
WhoMe28332@reddit
I’ve never shaken milk. But they will take that second space after the period from my cold dead keyboard.
FuseFuseboy@reddit
Did anyone else immediately check to see if there were two spaces after the period? No? Just me? Okay.
WhoMe28332@reddit
lol. There actually weren’t here. It’s a keyboard thing for me. Typing with my thumbs it doesn’t always come as naturally.
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
My bestie of 54 years and I just had this conversation! We grew up on raw cows milk, sometimes from the tank, sometimes directly from the cow. We strained it thru a hand towel before it left the barn
Woodbutcher1234@reddit
If you're stateside, did you catch DeLauro go off on Kennedy on the topic of raw milk?
Emotional_Mess261@reddit
I am and noooo, but I am curious now and will look it up

i stopped drinking bovine udder juice decades ago. it is full of hormones and i dont need to get fatter - ymmv

Mine goes back to elementary school milk. We had a great local dairy bring our cartons of milk. There was always cream on top...1970's kid.
jondes99@reddit
I just had a flashback to shaking the crap out of my chocolate milk carton.
Substantial_Layer_79@reddit
Good times!

Setting the choke on the car.
TheeRattlehead@reddit
Give it a few pumps if it's sat for a day.
DMFD_x_Gamer@reddit
I shake every liquid before opening. Even a quart of oil before I add it to my truck.
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
You must clean up a lot carbonated beverage messes.
DMFD_x_Gamer@reddit
Not my job.

DMFD_x_Gamer@reddit
While im a fan, I do not have the tatt. So not officially ✌️
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
I still shake the cartoon but we also now drink soy milk, so you have to. (Prevents the tofu from forming in the bottom.)
StinkypieTicklebum@reddit
The milk I buy (not raw!) needs to be shaken.
r2killawat@reddit
Apparently you don't have to warm your car up in the winter anymore. I still let mine run for a few minutes, especially when it gets into the 20's or less.
Starkravingbrie@reddit
We found out (the hard way)some vehicles don’t circulate oil if it isn’t moving so I don’t run it for long without going now. New cars suck. I want my gmc safari back.
r2killawat@reddit
Starkravingbrie@reddit
I have a dual stage oil pump and at low idle it has low oil pressure(supposed to help with fuel efficiency etc). It leads to camshaft wear. I needed an upper engine rebuild and the dealership said it is a common problem.
Rungi500@reddit
Engine wear to save a little fuel is so ass backwards. I bet it wasn't an engineers idea.
Rubywantsin@reddit
The barn doors were the bomb.
Starkravingbrie@reddit
Yes!
TheJokersChild@reddit
I think once the idle kicks down, it's ready.
r2killawat@reddit
That's what I was taught
Oldebookworm@reddit
Might not be necessary for the engine, but it definitely takes a few minutes before it blows warm air
Reader47b@reddit
Or before the windshield defrosts!
Majik_Sheff@reddit
I still let mine warm up a little while I scrape. Some habits die hard though.
RealtorRVACity@reddit
I shake everything pretty much. I also learned that condiments really don't last for years ha ha
Severe-Reality5546@reddit
About condiments: Ketchup and yellow mustard do have to be shaken. It is gross when I forget to shake them, and when I squeeze the bottle, I just get nasty ketchup or mustard-flavored water.
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
That's not just yellow mustard. Other kinds will too to the point where if I want to cook with them I'll take a spoon and reconsolidate the oil with the rest of the mustard.
Isn't storing ketchup upside down supposed to help with that or something or is that the kitchen equivalent of an urban legend?
Rungi500@reddit
Can confirm, it does not. The containers that stand on the cap still separate and you still get that pre-condiment uh, yea.
Specialist-Ad-5583@reddit
Milk and liquid creamer 😆
thornyrosary@reddit
Oh man, that shaking milk thing brings back memories. After my dad got out of the military, he worked as a milkman and delivered glass bottles of milk. This was especially ironic, since my grandparents had dairy cows for personal consumption. So shaking milk was a fact of life growing up, no matter which house you were at. You had to, otherwise you'd have a thick clot of cream on top of the milk, and the milk at the bottom would be thin and creamless.
I really do miss the taste of raw milk, but that's a whole other story in itself.
I'm also hardwired to look at the bottom right of my PC screen to make sure I have an Internet connection when I log onto my PC. It stems from having a dedicated dialup line way back when.
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
That's supposed to be obsolete?
Flux_Inverter@reddit
I still test 9V batteries using my tongue. I look online for the nearest military base before moving to know if I am dust or not and which direction to evacuate. I also shake milk before opening.
Fokewe@reddit
Not since I switched to almond (not first choice)
babs82222@reddit
I thought almond milk says to shake it on the bottle. Either way, I shake mine
Fokewe@reddit
It does but it mixes when I turn to pour
Auntie_Venom@reddit
I especially do with my almond milk, since it’s several ingredients, I want them to be evenly dispersed.
security-six@reddit

dbrmn73@reddit
Only milk I ever shook was chocolate or strawberry milk.
Cool-Impression007@reddit
Same!
troisarbres@reddit
My milk is in a bag so nope! But, if it was in a jug I'd definitely be giving it a good shake!

I still shake light bulbs.
DanielBG@reddit
of course. that little ting ting ting tells you so much.
DanielBG@reddit
I shake my almond milk because that shit DOES separate.
Bob_12_Pack@reddit
I can’t remember the last time I had milk other than cooking with it. It was a beverage when I was a kid, but at some point I quit drinking it, and I do t eat cereal anymore. My dad drank it every day with his dinner until he passed.
UpstairsCommittee894@reddit
Local farmers market sell full cream milk, Mix that with some chocolate nesquik powder and ir's as thick as a milkshake.
Angry_GorillaBS@reddit
I don't remember ever not shaking the milk before pouring. I'm reasonably sure I've never seen anyone else neglect to shake the milk either
viola_monkey@reddit
My husband would always leave the cap half screwed on - which drove me crazy when I shook the milk because milk went everywhere. When he asked me why I shook the milk, I said to mix the fat up in the ….ohhhhh…GLASS BOTTLE. This is what my parents did when the MAIL MAN delivered milk to our house in said (less than 50 years ago). Needless to say he screws the lid on tight now. He’s older than I by a year, but apparently he didn’t have to deal with all that and I have questions that are totally unanswered as we grew up in the same town.
Severe-Reality5546@reddit
I do the shake-then-pour with almost everything from the fridge except carbonated drinks.
I've heard that newer dishwashers are much better at cleaning, but I still thoroughly rinse off dishes before they go in the dishwasher. My dishes are probably 90% clean when I put them in the dishwasher.
Oldebookworm@reddit
I practically wash my dishes before I out them in the dishwasher. The thought of putting a plate that hasn’t been thoroughly rinsed with no food stuck on it just makes me cringe
EngineeringTom@reddit
Same on both here.
Lopsided_Tomatillo27@reddit
I still point the remote at the TV even though it’s not IR.
Routine_Breath_7137@reddit
Wait, what? BRB..
TheJokersChild@reddit
Bluetooth is taking over.
MrRetrdO@reddit
If you look at your remote thru the lens of your phone camera as you press the remote buttons, you can see the IR light if it has one.
Md693@reddit
Yep I think it goes back the cream separating
TheJokersChild@reddit
But if the cream sits out too long...you must whip it!
Thin-Solution-1659@reddit
For me it was because we bought powdered milk. I think it was part of SNAP maybe?
CJK_Murph@reddit
Definitely powdered milk. I still keep some on hand. I am my mother’s daughter lol.
zorasrequiem@reddit
Hurk, we got that and it never dissolved all the way. Never looked back!
TheJokersChild@reddit
I'm getting into that now. Comes from shaking my creamer, I think.
twoturntablesanda@reddit
I don't even know why I shake the milk. I just do it.
dubgeek@reddit
Separating clothes before washing.
CJK_Murph@reddit
I definitely turned all the family underwear pink a couple months ago.
Auntie_Venom@reddit
Dye catching sheets help a lot, but if it’s a new red shirt, heck yeah I’m separating it from the rest of the laundry for a long time. They don’t catch all of it!
I sew, and prewash my fabric, and sort by color. I had some that had a small amount of red, so I washed with other stuff that was predominately white with other colors. Even with color catching sheets, I spent DAYS rewashing with special dye removing detergent to get the pink tinge out of all of it.
Dextropic@reddit
Not since milk became the enemy.
dismaldunc@reddit
I dont drink the last bit of my cup of tea.... coz pre teabags there was always a leaf slurry in the bottom. not been like that for 50 years.... but here we are.
ChiefinLasVegas@reddit
DAE, open liquid carton containers like milk & oj, the old way to get the last drops out that the new way can't?
Poultrygeist74@reddit
Something something boys to the yard
SmearingFeces@reddit
I shake then sniff.
Slipstream_Surfing@reddit
And every time I wonder if I'd get better information if I skip the shake.
radiantwave@reddit
Actually, though you don't need to shake milk to mix it, shaking it infuses air into it... Like water, shaking milk actually makes it taste better, in my opinion.
Slipstream_Surfing@reddit
I'm just a fan of froth.
Hot_Rock@reddit
Yes. Mom used powdered milk combined with water and a touch of real milk to stretch the budget. Mixing and shaking was part of life.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
The secret with powdered milk was to let it sit in the fridge overnight before you use it. It gave everything time to properly dissolve and let that weird odor dissipate.
Now I keep some powder around because it's a useful ingredient.
MaximumJones@reddit
I still shake nitroglycerin as a matter of habit.
Majik_Sheff@reddit
Those little tablets make a neat clinking noise in that tiny glass bottle.
Unless you mean the other form. If that's the case I think your luck stat might be broken and you should buy a lotto ticket.
Demostecles@reddit
I still do. Whole milk and heavy whipping cream.
MeatSuitRiot@reddit
Why would you not lol. Cow milk is gross and settles
Astronaut6735@reddit
Homogenized milk doesn't settle.
theShpydar@reddit
What sort of weird milk are you buying? Buttermilk?
GreenerMark@reddit
Yes, because it's oat milk, and you're supposed to shake it.
simonbaier@reddit (OP)
Back in the day if you asked the local grocer for oat milk, he’d look at you kinda funny.
GreenerMark@reddit
What's a local grocer? /s
EvilDan69@reddit
With bagged milk, it would end up everywhere. So no, no shaking milk unless making a chocolate milk and I actually have to stir/shake to mix
HammerMeUp@reddit
It shakes enough when drinking from the jug as far as I'm concerned.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Only chocolate or strawberry.
Miami_Vice_75@reddit
What's funny is I shake everything before pouring- milk, juice, sauces and condiments, medications (even pills)!
Positive-Froyo-1732@reddit
Gotta shake ketchup to avoid the dreaded "ketchup water" drenching your food/plate.
Miami_Vice_75@reddit
Of course you do! Are we the only ones who know?
After_Narwhal8582@reddit
swirl and sniff make sure its not funny looking then taste

Drinking Milk?
ConstantConfusion123@reddit
Never done that.
But, I always tap the top of a soda can before crackin it open.
craftygal1989@reddit
The tap is like a compulsion for me.
Melodic_Caramel1777@reddit
I shake my soymilk. Not sure why. Haven’t used cow milk in almost 30 years - don’t recall if I shook that.
I also shake liquid meds, semi-liquid canned goods (like peas and beans), jars of salsa.
Dracula_Gottfried69@reddit
turtle0831@reddit
I shake creamer or buttermilk but not plain milk.
grateful_john@reddit
I don’t remember ever doing that.
themiracy@reddit
Wait so my husband does this. What is this about? Hasn't milk been pasteurized our whole lives?
hapster85@reddit
Me either, unless it was chocolate. You don't even have to shake that now either, but I usually still do. Homogenized milk has been standard in the US since the 50s, but maybe the OP was raised on a farm?
Rich_Group_8997@reddit
I made a comment to someone about shaking my milk and they looked at me like i had a second head. Now that I think about it, I think I only did it because my parents did it, because they were raised with milk deliveries. There was no reason for me to ever shake milk, and now I'm questioning my entire life. 🤣🤣
annette_va@reddit
Any bottle/jar I pick up off a shelf (in the store or from the fridge), I automatically shake. No idea why. My husband thinks it’s hilarious.
simonbaier@reddit (OP)
I’m at the older end of GenX (Feb 1965) and grew up in rural Maine. The milkman delivered milk with the cream at the top.
perthelia@reddit
I did it well into adulthood; it was because as a kid my parents would buy multiple gallons or cartons and freeze them, and they'd separate when thawed so we gave them a good shake to mix the milk up again.
I stopped doing it because my oldest child was always too impatient to screw the caps back on securely after getting milk. :P
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
I got back to it because the local dairy’s whole milk would have a fat plug on top.
ancientastronaut2@reddit
🤢
Mindless-Baker-7757@reddit
If I call it heavy cream does that sound good?
CooperSTL@reddit
I still shake the milk out of habit. We grew up using powdered milk is the reason.
Elliott2030@reddit
I still use canned milk (it's only for my light coffee habit, so anything else goes bad too fast) so I still shake it.
Phobos1982@reddit
Never heard of that.
phred_666@reddit
I never did. My parents would shake up buttermilk before pouring it but not regular milk.
TheSpatulaOfLove@reddit
I shake all liquids unless carbonated.
