Which one of you rich kids got to try this?

The commercials made this look like the epitome of luxury.
uncirculated_luster@reddit
whoa, i don't exactly remember the whole commercial, I just have a vague memory of the ice cream getting layered on, over and again.... I got one for myself, can't remember how old I was, but I do remember that top layer of chocolate being quite good--smaller than I had expected...
CallieKitty81@reddit
I wasn't rich, but my grandmother would get this sometimes. š¤š¼š¤š¼š¤š¼

This and Sizzlers.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
My mom got them with a double coupon and my discount for working in a grocery store.

Dream was never fulfilled
ughyoujag@reddit
Same. Itās weird how often I think about this thing and lament that it no longer exists
SeasonPositive6771@reddit
It still exists. They even just started carrying it again at the grocery store right around the corner from my house. Apparently there are enough of us old folks requesting it.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
For real?? Maybe I'll get one... and possibly be disappointed, according to some of the folks here who've had it lol

Ltimbo@reddit
Is it $100 so even as adults we still canāt afford it?
SeasonPositive6771@reddit
No, I think it's like $7 to $9. I don't remember it being over $10.
sensible_pip@reddit
I was going to say I see this at the grocery. I bought one a while back and it was pretty bad. Iām sure nothing like the old school one.
ughyoujag@reddit
Maybe I should just keep it in my memory as some beautiful unfulfilled dream instead of hunting it down. Iād be so sad if I got it and it sucked
idwthis@reddit
I imagine that now it'd be a "never meet your heros" kind of thing.
I found an amazing chocolate mousse dessert last year from a company called Sublime. I was so addicted to those. It's a Canadian company, and I found them at Publix.
Then like 3 months after finding them, Publix stopped selling all their desserts except for their frozen macarons.
The disappointment is immense. I want to move to Canada just to get my hands on that chocolate mousse.
ughyoujag@reddit
Iād love to move to Canada for a number of reasons these days
idwthis@reddit
You're telling me. That's the dream. But I'm stuck down in Florida šš

Zeqhanis@reddit
People who've tried the original say it was bland.
sensible_pip@reddit
The new one is like icey milk water with a hint of chocolate.
SaveusJebus@reddit
I finally remembered to look for it at my local Walmart and they didn't have it /sobs
ughyoujag@reddit
Oooh damn, well now Iāll have my eyes peeled at every grocery store because this is like a 35-year craving
BowiesFixedPupil@reddit
They always sold it in the UK, the most remarkable thing about this is it is by quite a stretch the cheapest ice-cream/desserts out there.
I think these still, in our inflation hit land, retail for about £1.50 so $2.
ughyoujag@reddit
That makes no sense to me. I googled it and they are $5.50-$8.29 in the US
Icaruskillswitch@reddit
Im in the UK and its usually about a quid 50
ughyoujag@reddit
I guess inflation is much worse here
sensible_pip@reddit
If you have a Grocery Outlet check there. They seem to carry it quite often.
Aggravating-Baby1239@reddit
Guess I found my people here. 30 years Iāve been wanting one of these!!!
ughyoujag@reddit
Apparently these still exist! Walmart sells them, Iām told. But someone said they suck now. :(
77slevin@reddit
In Europe it still does, got 2 boxes currently in my freezer.
ughyoujag@reddit
Apparently we still have it, but itās $8 and not good
GreyTigerFox@reddit
The sell them at Walmarts across the USA.

I wasnāt rich⦠but believe me⦠you missed nothing special
irishprincess2002@reddit
Same but years later I saw how they made it and now I never want to try it!
KneelB4Z0d@reddit
Me too, it was too fancy for us
MiniTab@reddit
My wife and I moved out to Hong Kong several years ago, and we found this at 7-11! We were both deprived Xennials as well, so we of course bought one.
like_shae_buttah@reddit
Well, how was it? That was right up there with Cafe Vienna in things I never got to try lol
MiniTab@reddit
It was pretty good!! Might have been more of a āI canāt believe we finally got this!ā thing, lol.
neyneyjung@reddit
I took a trip to UK a few years ago and found it at a grocery store in Oxford. Bought it instantly. Sat at a park near by and devoured the whole thing in one sitting. My inner child was so happy.
urfriendflicka@reddit
I was a poor kid with a family friend who became rich that we did weekly dinners with. I had it once. It was ok, but we all honestly liked that chocolate chocolate chip cake from KFC better and wwnt right back to having that for dessert and never bothered with the vienna again.
Gold-Cake-8343@reddit
Fake tiramisu

It's nothing like tiramisu, and a far as I know, no one thinks it is.
cranberrywaltz@reddit
We were allowed to try it once. It wasnāt good. It tasted VERY cheap.
Intrepid_Race1923@reddit
I had it. It was awful.Ā
Stargirl156@reddit

Not me. I was lucky if I got an Oreo
nouseforaname79@reddit
Tasted like ice cream, really nothing to write home about. When you blend so many ice cream flavors in one spoonful, itās a mess of tastebud flavorfulness.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
my family got them like once a month or so. It was so damn decadent. that crispy chocolate and smooth ice cream still haunts my mind to this day.
mousee3176@reddit

mr_weathervane@reddit
Most Sundays in the UK, although the GOAT was Romantica.
JusticeFrankMurphy@reddit
You know, this thing was only like $5 and you could get it at any supermarket. Marketing it as a premium, luxury product was a genius move.
The perception that the Viennetta was scarce and difficult to acquire (in America, anyway) is also caused by the fact that it was only available in the US for a few years in the 90's, most likely due to cross-border licensing issues (it was originally a British product).
On_my_last_spoon@reddit
Can confirm. My mom would got this once or twice and she was not rich!
I loved the sound the chocolate layers made as you cut through it! Such a satisfying crunch!
Adept-Address3551@reddit
Yeh I laughed, not rich food..
akerasi@reddit
I had it. It's... not bad, not great. Decent vanilla ice cream with chocolate flakes in it, when it comes down to it.
fourofkeys@reddit
i bought one once in high school because my mom was gone that week and left me with her debit card. it was underwhelming.
AdministrativeBear53@reddit
That was waaay to expensive! Mom wouldn't buy it. š
slowbilly@reddit
Me watching the commercials
David_Summerset@reddit
My grandad would buy it everytime we came over.
My brother and I would watch binge James Bond movies with him and we eat the whole thing.
Safe to say we're the favourites š
jouleheist@reddit
Once. It was really good.
Administrative_Ant64@reddit
They still sell it. Go pick one up.
unnccaassoo@reddit
Fun fact: here in Italy it was considered a low effort dessert alternative, the real one was homemade Tiramisù or fresh made gelato.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
To be fair, anything you buy rather than make is low effort.
unnccaassoo@reddit
Gelato is different, nobody makes it at home, but you need to get on the car and go to the nearest reputable shop to get an expensive styrofoam box of it. Doing this right before or after a meal is comparable to serving a fresh made cake, e even if it's home made.
YoureABoneMachine@reddit
100% I shoplifted this.
bokehtoast@reddit
Omg. I have been trying to figure out what this is from a childhood memory and searching frozen sections of grocery stores literally for at least 15 years hoping to see it
BoringExperience5345@reddit
We had it once. It was air. But delicious.
bikeonychus@reddit
Lol, they weren't for rich kids, this is what your nan who lived in a council house brought out at Xmas because she wanted to be fancy, and she knew even the kids would eat it.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
Guessing by your verbiage that you're in the UK? Here in the states it was marketed as a high end dessert. At least that's how it seemed to kid me lol
HicJacetMelilla@reddit
Yeah, but in the same way Grey Poupon and International Coffee cans were marketed as fancy.
nolafrog@reddit
Grey poupon fancy as hell. Dat mf always riding around in da limo
dinglepumpkin@reddit
TRUE, but itās also true that it wasnāt actually expensive or eaten by actual rich people. Thatās just advertising
bikeonychus@reddit
No, you're right, the advertising was similar to Ferrero Rocher, but both were still affordable options for when you are feeling fancy. And yes, I am british, but I live in Canada now, and Viennetta comes up in conversation a surprising amount.
jacksonmills@reddit
I mean, it was exactly that in the US, too; it was marketed as a high-end dessert to us filthy middle-class plebs.
Yes, my grandmother served this every Easter.
peterdabit@reddit
I did my kids mince beef and onion crispy pancakes, potatoe waffles and a vienetta to show them what kid luxury was in my day. They weren't impressed
bikeonychus@reddit
I lived on minced beef and onion crispy pancakes at university! Haha! I used to be able to get them cheap at Kwik Save with 5p noodles.
But yeah, I feel my kid would also not be the slightest bit impressed either.
Karrik478@reddit
But they are waffley versatile!
https://youtu.be/vXLyLG58ZSY
Karrik478@reddit
We lived in a council house and had Viennetta almost every Sunday. It was very affordable.
Fresh orange or grapefruit juice, on the other hand, was so expensive that it was served as a starter at fancy restaurants.
bikeonychus@reddit
Yeah, I didn't have proper fresh orange juice until I was an adult. I still find it too sweet, and have to water it down.
SeasonPositive6771@reddit
It was definitely more accessible in the UK. In the US it was much harder to find and considered something aspirational.
strangesam1977@reddit
Yep. And it was not really that nice.
SignificantApricot69@reddit
Only on my birthday
pettyvillainy@reddit
This was the very first grocery I ever bought for myself once I got my own place.
Smart-Practice8303@reddit
Got to try it once at a friend's house. I thought it was awesome (probably because it was the only time I would ever get to try something from tv).
cola1016@reddit
My grandma bought it a lot. Thatās the only time I ever really had it lol. She wasnāt rich. Just an old lady with a sweet tooth.

Definitely wasn't a rich kid, but it was a special treat that we occasionally got and I absolutely LOVED it!
Kellzy1212@reddit
My mom wouldnāt buy it because it was low quality. The commercials made it look fancy, but it definitely wasnāt. She only bought Breyers because they had clean ingredients ( at the time ) We werenāt rich though, just average working class.
eyelinerqueen83@reddit
I never had this delicacy
Tricky-Passion-7191@reddit
Regular yes. The chocolate vanilla combo?? Who am I? A Kardashian??
PMmeHappyStraponPics@reddit
My grandma bought one for us once.Ā
I was a kid, so I don't know how good they actually were, but as a kid they were just add amazing as you expected them to be.
Sudden_Fix_1144@reddit

UnfortunateSnort12@reddit
I too will cut that person!
JangusKhan@reddit
Yeah it's just extruded ice cream product. Looks fancy maybe, but it's all hype.
cellrdoor2@reddit
Is it all just ice cream frozen into squiggles? We couldnāt afford it when I was a kid and Iām assuming itās bad enough quality now to avoid- but Iām still kind of curious. Different flavor squiggles? I always thought it looked like it would be a little crunchy maybe?
JangusKhan@reddit
It's classic manufactured luxury. The ice cream isn't any better than a Klondike bar. Early 90s schlock.
chargeorge@reddit
And the actual ice cream was extremely bland. The one deeming part was some very thin crispy chocolate which had nice texture
ImmediateMousse8549@reddit

EricSparrowSucks@reddit
I tried both flavors, and made my family eat it out of green wine glasses we got at Arbyās, because we didnāt have the dessert glasses like in the commercial.
Bart_1980@reddit
Ehm guys, Vienetta is fairly cheap ice cream sold in basically every supermarket. Is this one of those āitās a luxury in the Statesā kind of things?
alysli@reddit
It was marketed as premium but was still affordable.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
That's exactly what it is. It was marketed here in the 90s as something super fancy.
smolstuffs@reddit
Feed me Vienetta on my death bed.

Wasnt_Listening@reddit
At my best friends house where all of them are chocolate addicts
Country_Gravy420@reddit
I had it. I don't think it was really that expensive in the 90s. It's okay, but not as good as the commercials made it out to be. So basically like every other food advertisement out there.
chichicupcake@reddit
They seriously need to bring this back, even for a limited time. Thereās an entire generation who are now grocery shopping for their families and need to feel some nostalgic joy again.
fir4ge@reddit
Fancy looking supermarket ice cream. It wasnāt expensive, though. It was good, but we didnāt have high standards.
flxtime@reddit
We had this instead
KingAbeFromanChicago@reddit
My sister bought one herself when she was like 15. I loved it.
Mysterious_Carpet752@reddit
I don't remember liking it, but adult me might.

I once ate one of these in front of a medieval fire place with some friends. It was glorious.

Only ever at my bougie ass grandmas on a holiday, and even then it was a tiny piece. But as a kid it was divine
Upvoteexpert@reddit
My mom would get them when they were on sale and she had coupons. Not rich though. I didnāt have a real bed frame until I bought one in college.
Persis-@reddit
Very much NOT a rich kid. But my mom bought this when I was a kid a few times. And more than once, I spent my babysitting money on it!
Inner-Salt-2688@reddit
So yes we had it. We weren't impressed tbh
Basic-Biscotti-2375@reddit
I had one piece of it one time. I think mom and dad ate the rest while I was at school lol
AlchemistMustang@reddit
Not until college lol
OtiumInUmbra@reddit
Wasnāt rich, but did try it a few times. Looking back, it was always freezer burnt, and somehow dry.
CaptinEmergency@reddit
We got them on special occasions
slyseekr@reddit
Because my mom always bought these I always thought this was the kind of dessert only mothers loved. Tasted like it too, but as a kid, I always only wanted Baskin Robbins or Thrifty's Rainbow Sherbet!
SidFinch99@reddit
I used money I earned from my own job to buy it once as a teenager. I wasn't very impressed. I thought it was overrated. It wasn't particularly expensive, but also not worth the money.
sbray73@reddit
It was a real disappointment when seen in real and in taste.
SwissCheese4Collagen@reddit
I make enough stuff myself to freeze that I think I'll just try and make a copycat version, now that I see they're available for too much money.
serrinidy@reddit
We were not rich, but I think I tried it once, if I remember, it tasted just the same as the Hershey's chocolate pie at Burger King
xxTwistOfFatexx@reddit
I think we convinced my mom once to give it a try but I donāt remember the taste being anything that stood out š¤·š»āāļø

I think the maddest my mom ever got was when I would DESTROY one of these things before she even had a bite.
MCSSavvy@reddit
My parents picked it up occasionally. I think I ate more of it whenever I lived in Spain than here in the States. My parents tended to get a variety of frozen snacks ⦠because, variety and the steady stream of friends dropping by the house to hang out.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
My best friend had this. I remember her telling me how special and gourmet this was.
I begged my mom to but it because I wanted to be like her, but my mom said it was too expensive.
I didn't understand it then, but now I do.
We were a family of 10 and she was a family of 3.
Her parents made close to $200 000 a year. My dad made $350 a week. We had a house, they rented an apartment.
So yeah, we bought the ice cream in the cardboard box and shared 2 or 3 types with the whole family. She got to have the. Fancy stuff that she shared with her parents.
Rivetlicker@reddit
Yup... way more often then I would've liked. It was a staple for each xmas, easter and other family get togethers
When I was little, these looked fancy... as I got older, I saw how much these cost, and that illusion was shattered. They weren't priced "luxury"
They were good though, but I don't miss them
RemarkablePaper1798@reddit
I've only ever seen those on the interwebs. I don't think our grocery store had them. Our special ice cream treat was ice cream cake roll (which I cannot find anymore!)
mmm_unprocessed_fish@reddit
We had both pretty regularly, and I think I would prefer ice cream cake roll. If I had a Time Machine, theād both be on my grocery list.
mmm_unprocessed_fish@reddit
We had this somewhat regularly. We were not rich, but we did generally have dessert after dinner.

We tried one, and were quite disappointed. Much prefer a Baskin Robbinās ice cream cake!
whenveganscheat@reddit
Well, yeah. That's like favoring a homemade apple pie over a passion flakie
OtherlandGirl@reddit
I have still never tried this!!
MungoJennie@reddit
I donāt even remember the commercials for them. I wonder how I missed it.
dillene@reddit
Viennetta was for nouveau riche posers. Old money had Ferrero Rocher chocolate.
ahaeker@reddit
My parents were too poor.
Agreeable-Spot-7376@reddit
Not me. Always wanted to though!
paging_mrherman@reddit
I had one for the first time like a year ago. I saw it in the frozen section like it was a lost relic. The presentation and taste were great. Tremendous...mouth feel.
KireekBlackhound@reddit
This is the second or third time I've seen a thread like this on Reddit, and I have to say, as someone who grew up in Europe (Greece), this wasn't really expensive... if anything, I recall it being marketed as the "easy way" to have a "proper" dessert always available, not as "high end". Basically, if you have unannounced guests or like a larger group than planned, or if you were a bit lazy and didn't prepare something yourself for the guests but didn't want to serve "just" ice cream as dessert, that kind of deal? Anyway, I have had it multiple times, as it was basically almost always sitting in the freezer "at the ready, just in case". (during winter, the "backup dessers" would be stuff like Ferrero rocher and ION noisetta - go ahead and Google them lol)
emc_lmt@reddit
It was totally underwhelming.
Day_Old_Paper@reddit
It was sooo good. My grandma would serve one for Saturday family dinner on special occasions.
Poopy-Drew@reddit
Choco tacos with Granny after walking to the gas station were way better
SparkyXI@reddit
Naw, wasnāt for ārich kids,ā I thought it was amazing.
HicJacetMelilla@reddit
My grandma bought them a few times per year. I thought they were delicious. The inside had layers of thin crackly chocolate. I tried one again a few years ago and it was not good; just tasted cheap. I donāt know if they changed the recipe or my tastes matured or both!
Rock_Creek_Snark@reddit
I can taste this photo - yes, we had these at home. They were amazing.
tssdrunx@reddit
Some of us worked in grocery stores. Had all the out-of-reach treats when they were "damaged"
ericsmallman3@reddit
They announced they were bringing this back to the American market but then the pandemic happened and they only released it in a small handful of markets.
Combat__Crayon@reddit
never, we were an ice cream cake roll family
unbalancedcentrifuge@reddit
Man...I can hear the spatula clink against the crystal in pic.
OneHumanBill@reddit
"It was only five bucks", yeah but five bucks was worth a lot more back then.
I got to try it at friends' homes. And I don't know what the haters are talking about because this stuff was the bomb.
It's definitely on my "things to do once my time machine is working" list.
LDawnBurges@reddit
We had it whenever ācompanyā came over, which was fairly often.
iliveonramen@reddit
I finally tried one because while working at a grocery store, they were going to toss some for some reason.
I remembered the commercials so grabbed one for like a quarter and it was not special at all. The marketing team deserves kudos for how they were able to engrain into my brain that the dessert was a fine dining experience.
S_A_R_K@reddit
Carvel was much better
meatpopsicle42@reddit
Probably the same that answered when this was posted yesterday.
lsp2005@reddit
I had it once. My parents bought it for a party. It was delicious.
Isanyonelistening45@reddit
I had a couple spoonfuls my granny loved them.
beeurd@reddit
Sure it was marketed as being fancy but I doubt rich people actually bought them. Definitely one of the cheaper dessert options, and they are still pretty cheap now to be honest, I pick them up quite often.
edasto42@reddit
When I was about 21 I opened a new bank account because they were giving out gift cards to the grocery store. I used part of that gift card to get one of those. It didnāt live up to the hype built up in my head.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
That makes me feel better lol. But sorry you were disappointed.
edasto42@reddit
Iām not saying it was bad. But the hype had made me think that this was going to change my life. My own fault for buying into that lol
sovereignsekte@reddit
Im gonna go buy one if they still make it. Was never rich or poor but somehow never even heard of these until recently.
BeneficialHamster567@reddit
We had it a couple times, I'm sure it was on sale. It was kinda hyped, ice cream cake from DQ was so much better.
Gwarnage@reddit
Buy a regular ice cream cake, and just eat the frosting. Same thing.
a_solid_6@reddit (OP)
Guess I'll have to take your word for it, Richie Rich.
Gwarnage@reddit
And after I'd have an Andes after dinner mint, and wash it down with a cold BoKu juice box.Ā
This_Fkn_Guy_@reddit
Failed at life apparently
smlinari@reddit
We always enjoyed it after some Grey Poupon š§
Think-Rush8206@reddit
Once or twice. It was good.Ā
Weekly-Bill-1354@reddit
Only as a special treat.
Solintari@reddit
Rich? You weren't rich until you reached the Grep Poupon level
bell83@reddit
My grandmother used to buy one of these every so often. The mint one, as she and I were both fans of mint. It was good, but that was the only time I got to have some.
cashews_clay15@reddit
I did but we werenāt rich lol. We just begged a lot.
Notinvestadvice@reddit
Only rich kids delighted in that
Whatchab@reddit
Not me, and I'm still mad about it. Those commercials made me think I NEEDED this in order to have 'made it.'
