I noticed I have a weird memory hole specific to 2001, does this happen to any of you?

Ok, so I’ve been playing this game I found on this sub.
It plays a music video and you guess the year the song came out. (www.yeartobeat.com if you’re curious)
Super fun, love it. It gives songs from all eras and genres of music. But what I have noticed is that if a song came out in the year 2001 I never guess that year right. I always think it’s a few years before or after.
I usually try to remember what was going on in my life when that song was big, like say when Usher’s Yeah was huge, what was going on, did I go on vacation, was it the big song at the beach that summer, etc., helps me narrow down a year.
But 2001 seems to be deleted from my brain. So far I haven’t been able to connect any memories to songs from that year.
My kid thinks it’s a side effect of the trauma we all experienced from 9/11. I don’t have any other explanation. I can get songs exactly right from 97, 98, 99, and 2000. But if it’s 2001, I whiff it every time.
I wonder if this can be extrapolated out to other things and this is just the first thing I’ve noticed.
So, I’m just curious if anyone else has noticed something like this.

Yep! I graduated 99 and the early 00s are a blur lol. This game is fun tho!

I’m really glad to find more than a few people are having the same experience, not just me and a weird selective dementia.
It is a fun game, right!?!

I too am an ‘82 baby and I can’t think of a single song from 2001. Beginning of 2001 was the last half of my senior year and I remember mostly listing to songs that I was nostalgic about as I mentally prepared to graduate. I vaguely remember that most of the hit songs at that time were unmemorable pop, electronica, or trance songs that were fine for parties or chilling with friends but nothing engaging. None of the music that year was something you could actively listen to. But also 9/11 happened and that’s the first time ever that our generation spent more time watching the news or news related shows like the Daily Show than watching or listening to entertainment. It was a weird time especially for our age. So basically I don’t think it’s just you.

Yep, the year I studied abroad. All the music there was about a year behind, so the stuff that came out that year lives in a weird time void in my head
nuskit@reddit
Yes! I was transitioning from teaching in South Korea to teaching in England and everything is all jumbled up.

This is interesting. Ok. I’m feeling better now.

Same for me, also was studying abroad that year. Coming back home it was like I was transported to a whole different dimension. It's really strange!

That was a fun game! Got 4136 out of 5000 🤘🏼

Isn’t it? 😊 I feel like the creator will get found out by the music industry any day, because there are no ads and they play full music videos that I’m sure aren’t licensed to use.

Since we’re talking about radio from a certain era, people may want to check out Radiooooo (5 o’s) app. You can listen to radio from different times and countries.

To add: check out radio.garden
Current streaming stations from all over the globe.

It’s just a glitch.

I find that with songs from about '97 to '00, but for me the reasoning is simple -- I did not listen to the radio at all between those years, and did not encounter anyone who did, really. I didn't watch music videos, I didn't listen to the radio. So a lot of the songs that were big hits then, I barely recognize.
Metzger4Sheriff@reddit
Ironically, I think I know more songs that came out in 2001 than any other year. My brother had moved back home for the summer and so we were always listening to things.
I wonder if (historic events aside) that wasn't a particularly memorable year for you personally, so you just can't tie the songs to memories?

I don’t know. My husband and I pulled up the top 100 hits or whatever for 2001 just now and going through it, especially for rock & alternative, I definitely have pegged a lot of these songs in the wrong year.
I don’t know. Perhaps after graduating high school and starting college, between working a full time job and losing touch with friends, this particular year just became a waypoint between different phases of my life.
MadLucy@reddit
I was in college in 2001, and didn’t listen to the radio at all. Probably 1999-2002, I heard very few new songs.
Ok, so this is funny, I just went to that site and played. I ranked 21st of 546 people in the US, and 40 of 1025 globally, missed two songs by one year. I got the >!System of a Down!< year correct, because I thought “I never heard this on the radio when it came out, bet it’s 2001 lol” and it wassssss.
Captain_Desi_Pants@reddit (OP)
Omg that’s hilarious. That’s the song that started this whole thing!
wtfever_taco@reddit
....Was this post just an elaborate Rick Roll?
TubeScr3ameR@reddit
Did you perhaps listen solely to talk radio that year?
Captain_Desi_Pants@reddit (OP)
Nope!
Acatinmylap@reddit
Yes. My memories of lockdown are enough to fill maybe a month, but it was obviously much longer.
Captain_Desi_Pants@reddit (OP)
Right? And for some reason, even though I was home and we had so much free time, I only took like 5 pictures from March 2020 till June 2021.
My phone has a hole of just random screen shots from internet nonsense but no photos of my kids or husband from that time. It wasn’t a a decision I made, just something I noticed later and it made me sad.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
The dates you list are a line that ends in 2k1. Do you guess the correct dates for any songs >=2002?
If not, it sounds less like a memory hole, and more like you just stopped prioritizing music metadata as a young adult. Which tracks with most people entering the workforce around then, and being busy surviving.
Captain_Desi_Pants@reddit (OP)
I do correctly guess songs after 2001, but the frequency decreases and it becomes more intensely focused on what music I like and it becomes increasingly obvious how much I tuned everything I do not like out. Ex. I have no clue what to guess for any Taylor Swift song.
So, I think it could be a bit of this as well.
No-Gas5342@reddit
2001 does feel a bit lost… it’s not post-9/11 but it’s not exactly turn of the millennium either
hypnofedX@reddit
I've never been able to dependably know what year a song came out so you're miles ahead of me.
