Xena Reboot

Am I the only one who doesn't want to see a Xena spinoff or reboot in the future? As a huge fan of the original series, I genuinely have no interest in seeing a reimagining with different actors and actresses or spinoffs from the Xena universe.
I feel like the only thing I would ever want to see is more of the animated stuff (Hercules and Xena) with Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor as the voice actresses for Xena and Gabrielle etc, that could potentially be a continuation of the main series. Maybe that Egypt season of Gab bringing Xena back that never came to be
Otherwise, it all just... feels weird to me lol
SmurfAtLarge@reddit
I want them to try it. Worst case scenario is I don't watch it. Best case is that it's really good.
Overall_Sandwich_671@reddit
I think video games would be the best way to revive Xena, especially if it was like Assassins Creed Odyssey.

Xena skin on Kratos
barkingfortheocean@reddit
xena is why I got into AC odyssey and honestly it fulfills a lot!
Simple_Actuator5506@reddit
Ooh, what was the deal with the proposed Egypt resurrection idea? I read the comics where she was brought back years ago but have never heard of thus
lil_luigi@reddit
virtual season 7. Some super fan fiction authors including Missy Good got together to continue the story.

Ooh, thank you so much!

Wouldn’t mind a reboot, but I can see your point. But I wouldn’t mind of a spinoff, if it had happened back then rather than in the future.
As I agree with you on that.
But the only thing in a spinoff focus on Eve, of her redemption/journey and perhaps her identity. As I think her character in Xena, wasn’t done or used well.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
yeah, I think this would've been a great choice. a more natural development too. I know theres a lot of Eve haters, but I never really found her overly annoying like others seem to. like you said, if it were created right after the og series, I think it could've been good!
RedwoodFox71@reddit
It would be a good idea, if Eve have spinoff after Xena or during Xena. As it suck that, the writers didn’t do much with Eve. After they were done with the Livia storyline, as they wasted Eve character and potential.
Angry don’t understand, why anyone think she was annoying. Maybe boring, never saw her as annoying.
While why season was my least favorite. As Eve definitely should have a spinoff.
FunCase8801@reddit
I also have no interest in it. I feel like it would be just plain bad or just not as good. Nothing can ever bring back that magic from before.
lorrajim@reddit
I would love to see a reboot! 💥

Worldly-Ad-602@reddit
I am right there with you. Lucy and Renee ARE Xena and Gabrielle. Maybe like twenty or so generations on down the line they could reboot it but right now, nah. Hard pass.
everyoneisflawed@reddit
I'm tired of reboots in general, honestly.
Fair-Victory-3531@reddit
Watching Lucy and Renee interact in interviews, live talks etc still feels like watching Xena to me. I care so much more about their chemistry than I would care about trying to reboot the world without them, or Ted Raimi, Alex Tydings etc. Let things be a product of their time.
Repulsive_Reality386@reddit
I also think of Lucy as a cylon. and maybe Renee was also a secret cylon. so have them do a reboot of them two living their lives as lesbian cylons. (lesbian cylons tell me that's not a great movie title)
Repulsive_Reality386@reddit
with Kevin Smith (The Australian actor not the American director) deceased on the right hand of Zeus. and Hudson retired I don't even want to see a cartoon. and live action I don't think anyone could combine both their camp skills and their badassery
DarthNarsil@reddit
No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots. No reboots.
TaniksHasNoCorn@reddit
I want a remaster and not a reboot.
If I ever win the jackpot/lottery I'd contact Renaissance pictures and personally pay for a remaster of Xena TWP, HLTJ, Young Hercules, and Jack of All Trades.
I want these shows to be upscaled to at least 1080P, but a 4k remaster would be great.
Star Trek TNG remaster showed that you can remaster effects and bring old shows up to par without changing too much. Although it would be painstaking, it wouldn't be the hardest thing in the world to remake the cheesy monsters/CGI in a larger picture size. Hell, utilize AI for it with touch ups. Folks have shown AI to do a pretty good job.
Hearing the soundtrack and effects in the best lossless audio would be awesome. 4k discs would be great since that is a region free format. Throw in all of the extras into the discs as well. I would love to have all of the episode promos too!
I'd also throw in Star Trek DS9 and Voyager. Maybe a proper remaster of Buffy TVS. But Xena and HTLJ would be my primary goal.
It would certainly create jobs and bring happiness to folks at the same time. A pretty good use of lottery winnings if you ask me.
Simple_Actuator5506@reddit
Omfg, Jack of All Trades! No Cleopatra 2525?! 😂
Wicked68@reddit
No you aren't. If it's not starring Lucy & Renee and basically changing the ending, it's not worth doing. I'd take a continuation, not a reboot. Don't need anybody recreating these characters.
amyc7@reddit
It would be good if it were an anime series with Lucy and Reneé's voices.

Agent8699@reddit
The good thing is, unless society changes dramatically, no one can be forced to watch any Xena reboot Clockwork Orange-style!
So, only those fans who do want to see a Xena reboot would have to watch it!
Latte-Catte@reddit
Nah, I think everyone would be very excited to see a live show with sword fighting wlw love interest, how many sword fighting female protagonist can you even think of? There's close to 0. Anybody interested in a greek mythos fantasy show with female protag would clock in, which means there's even less excuse they haven't gotten on it already!
I think old fans are simply too attached to Lawless and O'Connor, but life goes on, and the new show isn't going to replace the classic Xena. If anything it'd bring in new fans who'd compare the classic and the reboot, and we can invite even more juicy conversation.
I for one welcome how the new generation may approach Xena's redemption. I assume they wouldn't kill her like what Tapert has done lol.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
I feel like you make it sound like a bad thing to appreciate the original performances by suggesting "too attached to Lawless and O'Connor". I think my overall point is that a reboot feels unnecessary when we have something so great already, especially in a time where reboots are so bloated already. My first thought goes to all the Disney live action remakes, like why? what was wrong with the originals? I've even enjoyed a few of those remakes, however I don't think they added anything or were necessary when the creators could have put their time and energy into something entirely new instead. To me, it gives off a money hungry vibe time and time again. If the point is to gain new interest, why not just encourage the original series that we all love as is?
Agent8699@reddit
Tapert is still involved, at least with the planned (?) big screen Xena movie reboot.
Unfair-Turnip620@reddit
I'd love to see it reimagined for a new generation. It wouldn't erase the old show, just add some new optional content, you know?
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
I personally don't really see the point when the show is great as it is. As a gen z person I feel it really does hold up beautifully in its original state. to me, anything without the original performances just feels like it would fall super flat
Unfair-Turnip620@reddit
Maybe it's just my experience with fanfiction, but I'm always interested in new interpretations/iterations of media I enjoy. Even if I don't personally enjoy the new version, it just brings new people into the fandom. Like, even if an individual doesn't personally enjoy it, some people might like it! It would bring more attention to the original and expand the fandom. Literally no downsides. You can watch it if you like it, but if you don't you can stick to the original.
FirebirdWriter@reddit
I don't love fanfic. I don't hate it. I still agree with you. It can be an alternative universe. The original still exists. So it's win win. Plus maybe we can get the Lyre Lyre soundtrack on vinyl to go with the other one (or all of them. Or a remaster)
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
I love fanfiction! I get your point 100% about not having to watch new things, of course. I think I just love a good thing as it is yknow? I feel like new people deserve to know the series for what it is in its existing state, without cash grab reboots poisoning the series and characters we've loved so long! I think no downsides is something I can't agree with, as I find many modern reboots to end up souring a lot of their original runs by proxy. However, there are exceptions such as the Dexter series continuation in the last couple of years which I found to be a great addition to the main series. I haven't watched the Buffy reboot myself as I'm not an original fan, however seeing those reviews definitely paints a picture that I would hate for Xena to get. Love this perspective though and am always happy to have new Xena fans :)
Unfair-Turnip620@reddit
Oh wow, I never thought about it souring the original by proxy. That's a really interesting perspective. Although I heard the Buffy reboot was cancelled. 😞
Worldly-Wind-1632@reddit
It happened w arrested development for me
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
see? very much not a Buffy fan, I clearly only heard rumblings haha. glad to have this conversation!
Unfair-Turnip620@reddit
Likewise! Have a good day!
DameEris@reddit
After refusing to watch the 21 Jump Street movie, I understand your quasi allergic reaction to the idea of a reboot. It's been a long time since I have seen a good one. Just remember the key things to look at are "Who made it?" (Rob?) and "Is the theme and tone true to the original?"
I have seen shitty remakes like the Roswell one. The problem there? They used an old series that was well loved and threw out all the content that made it good in order to make social commentary on modern issues. It's all about who made it and why. If the original creator is involved and the spirit stays true to the original there is room for growth. You just need a better sorting system..... or a guinea pig friend to go in first and tell you how bad it is lmao
FirebirdWriter@reddit
I am open to it but I'm going to need to be sold. It also needs to have the blessing of Renee And Lucy as well as Tapert. There's ways it can work without being a bad outcome. My writing brain has many.
There's the fates collide episode, a story set in the same world but new people, and many many other ways that I am open to. I think however animation in a non heinous style would be a good choice for the set up. Let's Lucy pass the torch as it were.
CatStoleTheCrown@reddit
Why? Are there talks of one? Yikes
Agent8699@reddit
Yes. A script has been written for a big screen Xena reboot movie by an unannounced female writer / director. But, Universal is only interested in proceeding of an A-list female director is attached and they’re few and far between and, to date, not interested in directing Xena.
Rob Tapert also isn’t sold on the current script, which indicates rewrites or a whole new script would also be required.
At the moment, it’s going nowhere fast.
Latte-Catte@reddit
The irony is, Lawless and O'connor are willing to pass the torch, but somehow Tapert isn't.
Agent8699@reddit
To be fair, Universal also probably aren’t interested in two women over 50 leading an action franchise.
I mean … ageism and sexism is rife in Hollywood!
And I think Lawless is over acting and wants to focus almost exclusively on directing.
But, Lawless and ROC have definitely been willing to pass the torch previously.
reo_reborn@reddit
There was a few years back but think it was a mix of rumour and jokes from the cast members rather than actual legit talk.
Jahon_Dony@reddit
To me, doing a fourth show in the Hercverse would be way better than "rebooting" either of the two main shows. The problem is they want name recognition to help generate automatic viewership / popularity. That would be near impossible with a spinoff to a 30+ year old franchise that's had nothing on film for 25+ years.
I can happen... They're doing it with Baywatch on tv this fall as a true continuation. They were going to do it with Buffy, but that was canceled two weeks ago.
How could you use the name Herc or Xena though, without having either as the main character and it not being a reboot? I'd be open to Gabi having a daughter named Xena with Iolas or somebody we've never met. Heck, it could be Eve / Livia's kid and actually be related to Xena... that's really not a bad idea. Livia has a kid named Xena in honor of her mother, who goes about doing good while battling her darker influences... hah, I solved the problem!
Agent8699@reddit
Given Xena’s notoriety, it would be very easy to introduce a female character that was named after her - perhaps Xena and Gabrielle saved her parents’ village, etc.
Or you could go with Autolycus’ daughter being named Xena and seeking atonement for her Queen of Thieves past, etc. It would be very easy to introduce a new “Xena” within the Xenaverse. In Xena’s very first appearance we hear that it’s a common name 😅
Jahon_Dony@reddit
I'd like her to at least be related by blood. What makes you think Autolycus has a daughter?
Agent8699@reddit
Why not? He’s a noted lothario and it’s not incomprehensible that he has a child or many children out there.
boltyss@reddit
Absolutely not.
While a potential reboot might pique the curiosity of a younger audience or those simply unfamiliar with the series, encouraging them to watch the original, a reboot with different actors, a different style, vibes, and direction wouldn't be the same at all and would lead to constant comparisons.
Latte-Catte@reddit
What's wrong with comparison? People are allowed to like different things.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
I am the younger audience and I just can't be convinced that any reboot is productive LOL. they are all terrible, so why ruin a good thing yknow? and yeah, the constant comparisons would get old real quick
boltyss@reddit
I agree. Perhaps the only positive aspect of reboots is that they make you want to rewatch the og series/film and that's it.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
pretty much how I feel most of the time lol
hegdieartemis@reddit
i'd watch if it was animated and made by studio mir or powerhouse animation
TypesAndPatterns@reddit
An animated film would be great, but it wouldn’t be quite the same because it would lack the spontaneity of an actual set (could still work, though, like The Bitter Suite, which was also tightly scripted). I’d love a continuation with original cast + newcomers that kept the versatile creative spirit of the original. Problem with a reboot is you can’t really put that same story “back in the bottle” & pour out the same results again. If Rob was really into it, it could work, but I don’t get the sense he is, & it seems easier to just to expand on the existing story.
Bulky-Summer86@reddit
I Agree. I feel like Xena and Gabrielle are sacred, in a venerated sense, and no one outside of Lucy and Renee should touch those characters. Now if writers could give us other warrior princesses to fall in love with or animated versions of the characters I would be open. I'm even open to similiar stories than run parallel to the happenings in XWP, but just don't mess up that greatness they created. Don't touch their story is my thought. It holds a special place in our hearts and a reboot with new actors, same charaters just isn't the way.
Boy_13@reddit
I'm the type of horrible fan who is always happy for more lol
I don't expect one and I'm not demanding one, but I wouldn't turn down another adventure.
I'm honestly pretty easy to please with reboots, sorry lol
Thanks-4allthefish@reddit
Or just wait for AI to pull off the lost scripts.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
yeah that's my nightmare actually lol. would rather it just not exist at that point
ClassieLadyk@reddit
I would be down for another warrior princess, but not Xena. Someone new whi has their own story.
PureMitten@reddit
I think an Uber style "reboot" with the reincarnations of Xena and Gabrielle in a different historical-ish context (Renaissance or Knights or Age of Piracy?) could be fun. There could be cameos from original cast as new characters because of the unrelated duplicates situation in that universe but otherwise be a new show in a similar style with similar dynamics.
When season 2 of Our Flag Means Death was coming out my farfetched wish was for Lucy and Renee to be on for an episode as Heavily Implied reincarnation of Xena and Gabrielle to bring OFMD into the Xena universe. I think it would've been cute and the show would've been an excellent fit in that universe
CalmNeighborhood9035@reddit
I'm still watching the series and constantly thinking about it. I'm a Gen Z person and I only ever heard my parents briefly mention Xena. I hate soulless reboots and mediocre live-action adaptations, but I'd love to see a Xena remake. Obviously, it wouldn't be better than the original, but well... it will always be there whenever someone wants to consume it. Franchises like Carmen Sandiego have returned with good reimaginings that don't disrespect the original work; Xena would just need good direction.
antealtares@reddit
I'm game for a reboot. Would be fun!
solarbaby614@reddit
I wouldn't mind an animated show with them voicing the characters. Or another live action show set in the same universe/timeline but with different characters. But only if they keep the same campiness both Hercules and Xena had.
archaicArtificer@reddit
Lucy and Renee are Xena and Gabby to me. I don’t want to see anyone else play them, ever.
TEZofAllTrades@reddit
A film version with new stars might be cool, but they would have to make it a more serious version to differentiate it. I'm not sure whether that would be a good thing, though, and it would probably end up being compared too closely to Wonder Woman. I'm undecided, but I most certainly would not want it to be crap and ruin the original.
SnoopVee@reddit
Naaa....Years ago I would've KILLED for a Xena reboot but times are much different today. A show like Xena wouldnt be appreciated in these times so I wouldnt wanna see its legacy tarnished by a bad story line or someone saying the usual ignorant shyt like "Its too WOKE" or their forcing "GAY" stuff on us again...
It would generally piss me off. Seeing how they handed Charmed and the potential "Buffy" reboot that is now axed....I'll just stick to my Xena re-runs.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
totally agree with all of this!
SnoopVee@reddit

psychosus@reddit
I think they could do an MA rated animated series and still be able to use a lot of the original actors that way. There's so much they could make into new canon material.
TumultuousVirgo@reddit
I feel like I’d only be down if they totally sedimented the story, like from start to finish we see her redemption and her sacrifice, plus I always liked the rebirth stories set in the “future” which I think could be really fleshed out. And maybe if the story is locked down. Then MAYBE we could talk about casting. But I wouldn’t take some hacky CW reboot.
Existing_Proposal655@reddit
No thank you. Has there ever been a reboot that was as good as the original?
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
literally never lol
MusicIsLife81@reddit
I am right there with you. I want nothing to do with any new spinoffs or reboots. Unless Lucy and Renee came back and played Xena and Gabrielle in some form whether it be their characters as older forms or in animated forms, I want nothing to do with it. They are Xena and Gabrielle and no one else can or ever will be able to take their place. They just have a chemistry both on camera and off that I doubt that they would ever find again between two other actresses.
Ok-Jackfruit-6873@reddit
Agree. A comic or a cartoon maybe. I don't even play video games but I'd love to see them make one with the real actresses doing the voices. I guess what I'd really like is a holonovel like on Star Trek haha.
crackylackyy@reddit (OP)
oooo, and video game is a great idea!! I know they've existed before, but something more refined would be nice lol
PineappleFlavoredGum@reddit
I think animation would be better, but animation doesn't really get as campy as live action does, and that was a lot of the fun for me. A new show could do that, but it would be hard to match everything else the show had going on with an all new cast.
big_smile_00@reddit
I'd love to see a reunion season where the cast comes back for one last adventure (maybe Cobra Kai style where they mentor a new generation). Or maybe a reincarnation series, where we see Xena and Gabriella's future reincarnations: Effectively a new show with new characters that still has echos and threads of the original.
reo_reborn@reddit
I used to. Now, no.
They'd have to re-cast and It would be 'low' budget and I don't really trust limited budget shows nowadays sadly.
