To the driver of the orange truck who refused to merge over going I40 Eastbound through Kingman AZ this morning

Every single truck was lined up in the right lane except for you there in the left slowly crawling forward with miles of space ahead of you. You could have rushed to the end, the many vehicles behind you would have loved for you to rush the end. I thought you were a fool, that you were trying to get over but no one was letting you, and that you were stuck going very slow with the rest of us because of it. With the decency at least to not race to the front and jam us up.
I know now it was I who was the fool, you clearly knew what was coming. That it was actually going to merge left and every single one of us trucks was going to have to fight our way over. We didn't have to because of your bravery, it was smooth and orderly, you kept traffic moving slowly on the left side, not racing any of us to the front even though you very easily could have saved a bunch of time. I don't doubt that in the long run you ended up making traffic go a lot smoother because of that decision. Godspeed Orange Truck Driver, everyone behind you hated you, but I saw, I understand now, and I salute you.
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
I've done this a few times with another driver and only slipping over at the last moment. And funny enough, it makes traffic as a whole move faster when people are forced to zipper merge instead of all piling up at the end trying to barge their way in.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Funny that it's literally the way to actually make the zipper happen, and everyone's upset because they want to rush to the end and make it not have worked lol
firstblush73@reddit
The zipper merge DOES NOT work because 4 wheelers believe it is 5 cars for every 1 semi at the merge point.
EscapeWestern9057@reddit
They believe it's 5 cars for every car too lol.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
It works exactly until the moment traffic begins, but it's very bad at mitigating it once it starts and certainly makes it worse. What I was saying is literally just that the idea of enforcing it like that is what makes it "work" because it kept the rate and truck flow consistent. It doesnt really otherwise lol
GordTransport1958@reddit
Well, ain't that a tough one for you to figure out, rookie.. He was doing the Lords work, running block instead of letting hundreds of 4 wheelers jump up in front and the other assorted dumbass truck drivers.. It a controlled merge..But I guess a rookie like you has never seen it done !
If you encounter me in a similar situation, I'll be the one doing the exact.same.thing. So, if you wannabe greenhorn "professionals" are looking to learn "old school "..try observing, instead of whining.. But that's what happens when you get "participation awards" in school, i guess.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
I wasn't whining I was just playfully describing a situation that happened on the road that I didnt fully clock at first because I was tired as hell after a long day and was pleased he wasnt being selfish for his sake, the opposite of whining, its praise?? But okay?
Kinda weird reply man, I prefer the "whining" 4 wheelers who think Zipper merges just magically work in the thread to whatever this is.
Also participation rewards were invented older folk to feel like their kids were special. We didn't ask for them brother, it's y'all who invented them and gave them out lol
East_Indication_7816@reddit
I’m probably the one you are referring to .
Buddy, with all due respect, your eyewitness account is built on assumptions, emotions, and what I can only describe as a complete lack of professional left-lane anthropology.
First of all, you say “every single truck was lined up in the right lane except for you there in the left slowly crawling forward with miles of space ahead of you.” That is one interpretation. Another interpretation is that this driver was not “crawling forward,” but was conducting a highly advanced traffic-flow preservation maneuver that lesser minds often mistake for suspiciously calm behavior.
Second, you claim he “could have rushed to the end.” Exactly. He could have. But he didn’t. That is called restraint. Character. Wisdom. The kind of maturity rarely appreciated in the moment by people who are already mentally writing angry speeches from behind the wheel.
Third, let us address the accusation that he was “jam[ming] us up.” Was he jamming you up, or was he bravely absorbing the hatred of the convoy so the merge could happen in a civilized manner? History is full of people who were misunderstood in real time. Copernicus. Galileo. The orange truck guy.
Also, you admit you thought he was a fool, then later realized he was right. I appreciate the honesty, but legally speaking that means the orange truck driver already won the argument before you finished typing the post. The court of public opinion has been notified, and the evidence suggests he was operating several chess moves ahead while everyone else was playing merge checkers.
Now, I would also like to challenge the idea that everyone behind him hated him. That is impossible to verify. Some of us were not hating. Some of us were confused. Some were impressed. Some were probably eating sunflower seeds and enjoying the show. And at least one person was likely thinking, “That trucker knows something we don’t,” which, as it turns out, was exactly correct.
And another thing: you called it bravery. I disagree. Bravery suggests fear was present. What you witnessed may have been pure conviction. A man so locked in with the road geometry, lane closure psychology, and herd behavior of commercial vehicles that he simply acted while others doubted. That is not bravery. That is artistry.
So yes, maybe from a distance it looked odd. Maybe it looked stubborn. Maybe it even looked slightly theatrical. But sometimes greatness enters the scene wearing a reflective vest and rolling 62 in the lane nobody else had the guts to trust.
For the record, I reject the entire framing of this post. He did not “refuse to merge over.” He merely declined to participate in premature panic. He did not crawl. He curated momentum. He did not create disorder. He exposed it. And he did not seek applause. He accepted misunderstanding as the price of excellence.
And before anyone says, “Found the orange truck driver,” let me make this perfectly clear:
My truck is not orange. It’s pink.
GordTransport1958@reddit
Similar to what I said.. Green horn rookies need to learn respect to us old school drivers.. I do this all the time..All the freaking "new to driving" in this country and dumbasses out here too.. Keep on trucking brother.!
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Not gonna lie a lot of this feels a little GPT pilled lol, but it also made me laugh. You indeed are not the orange truck guy for sure, but you assess my true feelings on them properly
Ok_Bug_6470@reddit
You’re racist for thinking a driver coming from another country should assimilate to the way vehicles operate on the roadways here. You should adapt to them and the way they drive back home in their country.
Natste1s4real@reddit
That is improper use of the road. All lanes should be used until they merge. They are engineered this way. Someone blocking traffic to stop others from using a lane is illegal as well as defying road and construction design. Do you start blocking a lane half a mile back, 1 mile back, 20 miles back? How is this decided? Maybe we should just turn everything into single lane roadways while we’re at it? When is it OK and when it is not OK. People doing this makes traffic back up even further (distance wise)and if the effect is solid enough, it blocks people from getting to their exit that is behind the merge because traffic is backed up further than it should be.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
unserious answer: if illegal why didnt the cop do anything
More serious answer: I don't agree with your legal assertion, seeing as they were still Moving, It's not like when someone splits both lanes and stop traffic to block it all, even if I still kind of think those guys can sometimes be cool. but your hypothetical Is a fair consideration. They're absolutely is a limit to how far and where it is reasonable, I certainly felt it was within that limit. Especially given the way the road was set up, there is not a way that it was going to be a clean zipper, not that I believe those tend to be clean around construction sites anyways based on experience. The implication that the whole Road may as well be treated like a one-lane road if we are going to engage in this completely denies the assertion of how traffic actually flows. There's a lot of very simple studies that show that when people are engaging in stop and go, the traffic gets worse due to the way humans react to stop lights and will inevitably over break. If anything it's a basic tenant of defensive driving that you should assume you don't know the outcome and give yourself a buffer.
A commercial vehicle is uniquely able to break up this phenomenon song because of how large and visible they are and clearly telegraphed. If they aren't throwing on their brakes and go at a consistent slow speed, it can help break up full stop and go. Ultimately though it's fair to argue that people will get frustrated by this and their actions around that will still result in the same amount of stop and go, personally I've witness the opposite, but I can't pretend I've done a hard study on this, though there are very good studies on how traffic forms, real world simulations that have been done as well.
If you think it can't help at all, agree to disagree based on what I've seen.
If you think it can, but don't trust commercial drivers, or any drivers to make that decision and help the whole, or worry about the slippery slope of it all. I dunno man, thats just kind of lame of ya. We can evaluate decisions seperately. I assure you I had plenty of time to evaluate this one, and I think it was a good one
ohmygodbees@reddit
Had something better to do. They dont have a duty to act on every little thing.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
One, it was the cop there for the construction zone so... thats literally his duty if there is a notable problem regarding the work area, just sayin.
Two, literally explicitly stated it was the unserious part, obviously they dont HAVE to.
ohmygodbees@reddit
Ah yes, so he did have something more important to do. Thanks!
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Literally managing the construction zone traffic as the job. But sure man. Whatever you say, dude was probably just chilling imo, which is fine by me. I prefer lazy cops.
Wildcatb@reddit
You start blocking as soon as it's clear that there's a merge. Move the same speed as the other lane (or at most idle ahead in Granny if it's stopped) and let things ahead of you flow.
Stay in your lane until the end, yes, but don't pass - passing and jumping in at the last minute is what causes the backups.
Natste1s4real@reddit
If everybody used all lanes until the end from the beginning instead of trying to merge too soon, you wouldn’t have that problem.
Wildcatb@reddit
If a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass on the ground.
Once people have merged, anyone passing screws things up for everyone already in line. The best solution, for the largest number of people, is to pace traffic and merge at the end. This allows traffic to flow smoothly ahead of you, and creates a forcing effect that keeps both lanes full to the end behind you.
In return, you're seen as a jerk, but after 35 years I just don't care.
Natste1s4real@reddit
Exactly, that’s why people should wait till the end to merge. If people start merging too soon it fucks everything up.
HowlingWolven@reddit
Blocking is unfortunately a necessary evil in a world where people don’t zipper.
Mattjew24@reddit
Cant always say theyre defying road and construction design, when places like nashville TN exist. If you follow road design, you will never merge, never catch your exit, and might die in a blaze of stubborn glory.
A0Ghoul@reddit
Your welcome 💪🏿

Icomer@reddit
Me and my wife drove west bound this morning and saw the truck with a mile of space ahead of him wondering what that "dumbass" was doing! Thank you for the story clearing it up and we laughed 😂
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Now you know! He was actually single-handedly ensuring the zipper functioned for a little bit of time. Unfortunately it sounds like once he got through it was right back to the same old stop and go. But he certainly helped a Fair few folks out in the aggregate
SexyWampa@reddit
Y'all really think this is next door or Facebook, don't you?
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Nope, I'm just sharing a story as if I'm addressing the person because its an enjoyable writing format.
Extra_Significance81@reddit
That wasn't me, but I do exactly this every chance I get just to try and maintain some kind of traffic flow. There is a method to the madness
adidaman@reddit
You end up making it worse and everyone is mad at you. You aren't the hero you see yourself as
Extra_Significance81@reddit
I'm certainly no hero. Just trying to keep moving when everyone else is in such a rush to go fast and slam on the brakes. Thanks for your opinion.
Elite_Slacker@reddit
People who dont understand why the two merge lanes should be going about the same speed couldnt find the square hole for the square block.
Socketz11@reddit
The me first mentality of everyone racing up to the zipper causing people to hit their brakes is the reason traffic is slower. The smoother the zipper flows the quicker everyone will move. People cutting in, not letting others in, and slamming on brakes is the cause of slower traffic. This truck did everyone in front and behind a favor, once he merged and all the angry selfish people behind him started cutting people off is where the problem starts up again.
RabbitFabs@reddit
You sir, are selfish.
20milliondollarapi@reddit
Yes, it did help. What causes the traffic taking so long is people braking. If everyone keeps rolling while merging, traffic will speed up.
Riyeko@reddit
This is what I tell people.
Zipper merging only works if there are NO CMVs in the mix anywhere. People have a good flow, merge properly and are courteous.
Put one semi truck in there and nobody wants to wait the 75ft for the dude to merge, so now you've got braking, honking and people flipping the truck and each other off. It's ridiculous
20milliondollarapi@reddit
You have it backwards It’s doesn’t not work because of cmvs. Plenty of truckers can merge just fine together and keep the flow. It’s the 4 wheelers that want to always be first that cause the problem.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
It doesn't look like you two are disagreeing to me, their comment to me reads like they are describing the way people behave around a CMV and thus it doesn't quite work out. Either way the assertion is certainly correct overall in my view
anxious_polarbear@reddit
Sad that so few understand this.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
The funny thing is just how willfully ignorant it is. There's so many properly designed simulations and real world tests of the phenomenon of traffic and the effect that stops have on it, but because everyone wants to justify their own choices, they absolutely refuse to look at empirical data and prefer to go based on what makes them feel better.
Like all you have to do to know how traffic actually works is pay attention to the stoplight and see how long it takes for the car in the back to actually get moving because of the Rolling reactions. Humans arent machines, it's never going to work the way it works in theory
Tricky_Big_8774@reddit
People can't seem to understand that you can only fit one vehicle through the merge at a time. Filling both lanes benefits people who are making turns prior to a merge point, and is largely redundant on an interstate outside urban areas.
RebelTvshka@reddit
Except it hardly, if ever, turns out that way because people are idiots.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
Some heros have piss jugs
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
I'd have bought him a fireball myself if I had the chance, unfortunately he didn't pull into the next truck stop
Ok-Association8136@reddit
People need to learn how to zipper merge.
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Zipper merges work great when they're permanent fixture. Unfortunately the reality of construction is that there will eventually become a point where traffic fully stops because someone has to pull out on the work site, and even if it was working for a bit, once you get to the rolling section of traffic where it's reliant on everybody's reaction to brake lights, which inevitably become increasingly harsh, you'll just get very big chunks of traffic after that.
It's why traffic can form even when there's no clear inciting incident. One driver slows down 10 miles, the next driver slows down 15 in reaction to it, and soon enough it's a dead stop. The less brake lights one has to react to and then overreact to, the less traffic will Ripple out. The zipper merge around construction sites runs into this issue because it is unable fundamentally to be something that people can consistently react to, and so it will always results in traffic when there is a sufficient flow of vehicles. Has nothing to do with any individual driver being even especially dumb. In theory you should be slowing down extra when you see someone doing something you can't know the outcome of as a basic tenant of defensive driving after all.
ignoreme010101@reddit
it's nice when people consider other drivers or even all other drivers ie the whole pack at that time&space, even little things help like when single lane through construction don't speed up/slow down excessively because you need to tailgate just hang back a tad further so you can maintain smoother speed variances. Or, especially when lanes are tight and one side of your lane is a breakdown lane, err towards that side if you need to be wobbly instead of erring towards my lane 🤔
the_clam_farmer@reddit
Kingman is so fucked up right now
Tutorele@reddit (OP)
Yeah it's still going to take a while to clear up, last Chopper out of Nam situation over here. Worth keeping in mind that they had it closed down to one lane until a little after the post so it unfortunately had a lot of time to get really bad, hopefully it clears up. But that construction has been brutal for sure
JulianneElise@reddit
Heart warming post that’s becoming a rarity in today’s world. Many blessings to you as well driver. Stay safe 🙏🕊️🙏
