I quite like The Beach House restaurant in Blackpool, we pe iad for the oysters, and I like the bit of the beach where at high tide you can climb down the stone steps straight into the water. I moved to Salford in the 90's. Took less than a week for some 14 year old shithead to pull a Stanley knife on me and ask for my wallet. I got used to walking past the burnt out cars and 'Tommy / Ryan / Solomon is a grass' graffiti. I've heard it's much better now, but I've never lived or even visited anywhere remotely as dangerous. Got out as soon as I could. I heard the BBC were coming and Jimmy Saville was still alive back then.

Interesting! I had a warehouse job there briefly in my younger days, before a couple of the locals in my work area got the entire intake sacked by creating a stacked carboard box wall to block the cameras , and then half inching half a pallet of digital cameras. Actually quite impressive how fast they cooked the scheme up.

There was a particular high rise apartment block in tbe center of luton that exposed me to the reality of true poverty. Large families living in 1 bed apartments, scared to open the door. Screaming and fighting sounds from closed door apartments. Smashed walls and windows and rubbish everywhere and a pervasive feeling of wrongness. I hope that apartment block gets shut down and those people get some real homes.

It was quite lacking there. I drove along the seawall to be able to turn the car around easily, at the end of the erm promenade was a boot sale? Now I'm a vinyl junkie and I've found some musical treasures before...even the boot sale looked shoddy, almost a landfill site, so much so that I kind of knew there's no treasure at that one.

I live in Wales, and I can also agree Newport is just not a good place to be in... I don't live too far away, but all the towns around here collectively agree Newport is the worst place to be. To be as fair to Newport as possible -- I think the food in some restaurants there are good, but it's typically only a place you go if you're trying to get to anywhere else, since the station is a closer stop to most places than my town is. I went there recently and when I was at the bus station there was quite a bit of rubbish left around... The shops don't look particularly inviting either and there was this weird man who came up to me and started talking to me while I was waiting outside a shop with some friends... Just a weird experience all around. Would not recommend

In terms of big cities, I would be quite happy if I didn’t have to visit Birmingham again. Grew up in South London so have had the pleasure (ahem) of visiting Medway a couple of times. Parts of Liverpool and Blackpool that u have seen have been a bit shocking but great people there so there we go.

Appleby. A cloud descended over us as we entered it on an otherwise sunny day. The place was deserted, and there was a "haunted" aura (ghosts aren't real)- even the dog was spooked with his tail down. It looked like we'd walked into a time capsule from the 60s or 70s... Everything about it set my whole family on edge. A genuinely unsettling experience. I've walked into flat-roofed pubs in the east end that had more welcoming vibes.

That could have just been the comedown starting to kick in though. Other than that I don't think I have been to a place that is genuinely bad, unlike other countries where you turn down the wrong street and everything gets really dodgy really quickly, Chicago and Washington DC are a couple of places that come to mind.

The other 2 that I really wouldn’t want to go back to are very much the same sort of places, coastal towns that perhaps were popular a century ago but now are just run down and sad: Blackpool (obviously) and Skegness.  I’ve seen a few places on this thread I would say are perfectly fine like Skipton. Runcorn was pretty dire. Took my husband to rehab there and took him straight back, as looking at the immediate locals to the rehab place, he’d have come back worse than when he went in.

This is actually a hard question. I can't really think of anywhere that's truly terrible so I'll have to throw a few caveats around. Whitechapel/Shadwell seems very dirty, seedy, smelly and run down for somewhere so near the City where you can buy a flat and not see much change from a million quid. Or you could spend less and run the gauntlet of not getting stabbed on your way home from work. Ive stayed there quite a few times as it's cheap, and it's easy to see why it's cheap... Coventry seemed incredibly bleak when I went to a uni open day years ago, yes I've judged it based on a fleeting visit. People talk about places being grey, I've never seen anywhere as grey. Lands End is a sort of... "Is that it?" place that takes ages to get to, has some very random commercialised bits, very windy (which to be fair is to be expected). Other than going to say you've been, I don't really see the appeal.

Buxton Christmas Market. What a con that was. Seen more Christmas in the downstairs cupboard mid-May than I did there. We got a coach there, never been so bored in my life. I was tempted to go and help out a charity shop nearby just to pass the time. Never am I visiting Buxton again.

Blackpool. Only place in the world I've seen a horse wearing a nappy, a man shitting on a promenade, and smelled piss everywhere I went. It's an open air public toilet with a pier and a rollercoaster.

small ex-mining comminity above an ex-mining towns in the Heads of the Valleys in Wales. It was out of a horror movie. 10 rows of terraced houses built into a steep hill with military monitoring masts above. All the street signs scraped off and replaced with nihilistic phrases. Road so steep you could see the bonnet of car without looking down. Just extreme deprivation. Inside the tower blocks of Marsh Farm Estate - flats nice inside but the communual areas were scary.

Not visited but lived: I had the displeasure of moving to a different town and managed to choose the worst road to live on (cheapest rent). Every day there would be mopeds, bikes and modded cars/trucks revving the everloving fuck out of their compensatemobiles. The place I lived in was a ground floor studio with a big window that faced the road. There was only a window between me and all the noise happening outside and I didn't have anywhere in my studio to go. There was also a corner shop about 20m from my front door and a sort of lay-by and cars used to pull up and idle/blast music late into the night. Even with earplugs in it was near impossible to sleep. The surrounding area was just scruffy as well. The only positive I've taken from my time there is the motivation to make enough money so I never end up in an area like that again.

Hanley, Stoke on Trent. I grew up there so always knew its reputation, but in my last visit it was just full of people high on something. There was a few guys petting an invisible dog, one guy who couldn’t open his eyes or stand up straight and was walking like shaggy from Scooby do, there was a group of them breaking into an electronic advertising board to attach an extension cord to it - and they were the normal ones! In a doorway of a closed down shop, there was a woman pleasuring men for a fix out in the open, men shouting abuse at anyone and everyone going past, ranging from racist to homophobic comments and there was a guy getting the crap kicked out of him by his partner for an unknown reason. I was only there for 1.5 hours! All I can say is, I’m glad I don’t live in that area anymore.

Surprised nobody’s said Grimsby yet. The place is a fucking hellscape for the most part. There are some OK bits and a couple of quite nice parts like there are in most towns but the misery of the majority of it just permeates…everywhere. Completes the Golden Triange with Immingham (‘ming to those who live there) and Scunthorpe.

Sad to say, Birmingham's real life's in the suburban ring around the centre, so the attractions are harder to get to for a casual visitor and those just passing through miss all the good stuff. But the council could pay some attention to the bits that people passing through do see - the area between New Street and Moor Street is utterly grim, and the less said about Station Street the better! You'd think they'd care about giving a good impression on the first thing visitors see...

There seemed to be two people doing something…..not quite sure…ah yes they were having a shag against a castle door. It was about 3:45 pm on a Saturday.
