Difference between 2003 forester dipstick reading vs oil consumption?

As the title suggests. My 2003 forester is consuming oil but in a very weird way. I have noticed oil consumption over the last 6 months and have changed the pcv valve as I was recommended it. But there wasn’t a difference. I changed my oil and over the span of a month drove 540 miles. Ive frequently checked my oil cold and it stayed around full. I checked yesterday and it was just about full, this morning when I check cold it’s at low.
The car has 67k miles. It’s an N/A 2.5 5speed. There’s no smoke. The only sign of oil anywhere is the oil pan right by the drain bolt had a slight film of oil on it but it never drips, and there’s never any that looks like it’s misted or sprayed.
I deduced this to old car oil consumption, Subaru 1qt every 1000 miles. But how does it go from full to low in the span of 20 ish miles? After adding a qt cold, im at full. After driving I’m over the hot oil level mark.
Am I consuming oil? I check in the same conditions in the same spot, did I really lose oil or is the reading just throwing me for a loop? If it’s just the reading, how can I be sure before driving my car on what looks like low oil? If anyone has any suggestions let me know, i feel like I’m going crazy.
Thanks

I can't understand your description. Check your oil in the morning, and see where it is from day to day/week to week.

Were you possibly on an angle or something when you checked it?

Maybe a slight angle but I check it in the same spot of my driveway every morning so it still dropped.

It could be you have a piston ring starting to stick most of the time it foats freely like it is supposed to but sometimes it sticks and you get oil up into the cylinder increasing the consumption

That's actually "a Subaru thing." My brother has told me about the same anomaly on his.
If you do a web search describing the problem, you'll find many other Subaru owners citing the exact same problem.
