Vortep1@reddit
I'm sure all the 911 drivers will go out and buy mustangs now... Lol nope
northbayy@reddit
Speaking as a Porsche owner, watching Porsche guys cope is hilarious. “Yeah well my colored cup holder stitching is way more luxurious and rare! Who cares about lap times!”
Vortep1@reddit
Yup Porsche owners are weird like that. The 911 guys look down on the 718 even. It's comical sometimes
exolomus@reddit
And how would I be viewed if I were to pull up to a Porsche Cars and coffee with a 944/928?
Rihsatra@reddit
Favorably, if you ask me.
GoldenState15@reddit
Nobody is saying this
caterham09@reddit
I really don't give 2 shits about nurburgring lap times but I absolutely love the pissing contest these manufacturers have gotten into over the past year.
It felt like everyone forgot how have fun over the last decade, and this brings that back a bit.
withsexyresults@reddit
Brings back the comment section pissing contest too just like forums back in the day
caterham09@reddit
The down vote arrow has done untold damage to society
strongmanass@reddit
On the bright side, it saves everyone from not having to read through a bitch fest between two users that goes on for multiple pages. I remember the 3 or 4 times a week weightlifting argument that just never ended.
ohwell_______@reddit
But that’s the best part of old school forums!
Slimy_Shart_Socket@reddit
Tbh I do and I don't like the pissing contest.
The parts they put into these cars to achieve these laptimes are $$$. So that means you as a consumer, when it's time to replace these parts it's $$$. You also have to think 10 years from now. Are the parts still going to be available?
Expensive maintenance costs means you'll either drive the car less, or it'll be out of commission more frequently.
Civic Si all the pads/rotors/calipers are in stock at Napa, Auto Value, etc etc.
A Civic Type R I gotta order all of that from the dealer (which will still take a few days) or I have to order it online. The rotors are 2-pc as well so they are much more expensive. Yes you may be able to find a shop that can turn or machine the rotors and a save few, but eventually they will need to be replaced.
I'm starting to prefer more mainstream performance cars like Mustangs, or slightly lower trim package cars (like a 340i) because the maintenance is cheaper, which means I have more opportunity to enjoy the car.
withsexyresults@reddit
Type rs are pretty mainstream. Dealers stock brakes. They’re probably cheaper for maintenance and consumables since they’re so much lighter than 340 or mustangs
thecanadiandriver101@reddit
I just replace my Type R rotors with blanks from either rock auto (80$ CAD) or EBC (\~$140 CAD). Don't need 2 piece rotors for HPDE or fun.
AngryScottish@reddit
So much this. Ring times are more about how amazing their test drivers are than the actual car. Course is so damn long and frightening that it takes a different type of human to drive it perfectly and at 10/10ths
When nerds use ring times as some kind of claim for why x is better than y, I just laugh. No way 99% of common folk are getting within 10% of any posted ring time.
jrileyy229@reddit
They're absolutely not getting within 10%. Forget all the variables, outside of a handful of people in the world.... nobody is renting the track to have it all to themselves for a day during perfect weather with a full team of engineers and unlimited sticker tires.
The reality is, especially for Americans, that 99.99999999% of them will never even drive the ring outside of video games.
dr8008@reddit
6:45 20.8km is about 6:22 BtG, meaning you would have to do 7:00 BtG to get within 10% of Jörg. Plenty of serious Porsche GT track junkies have gone that fast, or faster, in lesser cars, given a clean lap.
You shouldn't need "common folk" be able to get close to a ring specialist for you to enjoy watching him put out a masterclass in driving.
jrileyy229@reddit
That was part of my point.... When are you ever going to have the track to yourself to do clean lap after clean lap until you nail a perfect lap? Unless you're a billionaire, you're not
triggered__Lefty@reddit
you can book a private rental for $1-$2k per day.
You don't need to be a billionaire to do that.
jrileyy229@reddit
What? Absolutely not. That's the price PER car, with 120 other cars on the track who also paid 2k.
Do the math on what that adds u to... That's what GM is paying to have the entire course to theirselves
triggered__Lefty@reddit
private rental days have no more than 50 cars.
And you don't need to run 1 at a time to race without running into traffic.
jrileyy229@reddit
You do it you're chasing perfect laps as an amateur in a GTD or zr1... Because you're going to screw up a bunch... If you do start to piece one together, you can't come up on a bunch of cars over and over with a delta of 80mph and expect them to be able to all perfectly get off the line
triggered__Lefty@reddit
you're taking it to a track day to race those other cars...
jrileyy229@reddit
No... We're talking about how an amateur gets close to a professional in an insanely fast car
AngryScottish@reddit
Serious Porsche junkies are different than the typical dork who is going to bench-race with ring times.
People who have driven the ring know it's not a good basis for comparing cars, it's all about bragging rights. The ring is insanely difficult to master, especially since half the track could be sunny, and other parts damp/moist.
To be clear, I did a 8m lap ten years ago in a Rent4Ring Exige S240 BtG. I easily left 30s on the table, mostly because my six laps was not enough to learn the track, plus traffic, plus weather conditions, plus too damn scared to push it harder. And I would never claim x car is better than y car, because it put a better ring time down.
Now, VIR lap times? MUCH better representation of car performance. Even then, it shouldn't matter, just go out and enjoy whatever car makes you happy.
caterham09@reddit
Even in a video game, the ring is really intimidating. You always start a track trying to learn it a bit, but with how long the lap is, it just feels impossible to get a grasp on.
bc10551@reddit
I think I've had like one clean decently sent lap in a gt4rs on forza with a wheel and pedals but with better tires and stuff. Could not imagine stock and with the very real danger of death in real life
AngryScottish@reddit
not sure why you or I got downvoted - probably but some dorks who think they can lap the ring at any reasonable amount of time, but have only driven in virtually
jrileyy229@reddit
When I used to instruct I dealt with that all the time... "I can do a 2:20 lap in my car in I-racing" and they think they're going to just go out session one and do that in the real world... They usually get a very abrupt and humbling wake-up call.
Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy@reddit
We just need a Viper to return now and my youth will be briefly restored.
damstr@reddit
The Viper ACR manual record stood for a decade until Porsche beat it last year I think it was? Would love to see what it could do with modern tires and some more laps. I think it has the potential to run a 6:55. The 7:01 lap was only the first or second lap and he had a few mis shifts in that run.
DrunkenReindeer@reddit
IIRC, wasn't the second car they took over their pacing at sub 7 before it crashed?
Incredible times for a manual, dumb V10 with 2017 tire tech. What could have been...
Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy@reddit

And let Team Oreca run it.

Given the Viper isn't know for restraint, why not both?
StatusCount7032@reddit
Touche', both it is ;)
TripleShotPls@reddit
God I want to see this happen. It won't. But I want it to.
RevvCats@reddit
Exactly, Ford played this perfectly

Yep, and today is National Mustang Day, which commemorates the anniversary of the Mustang's debut at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964.
Martbern@reddit
What else are they supposed to do? To push boundaries they have to innovate and challenge eachother?
Skensis@reddit
I love the pissing contest that happen in the comment sections!
Geofferz@reddit
Cos the mustang gtd did it 5 seconds faster, got it.
tiagojpg@reddit
I still can’t take it seriously with a “GTD” badge. All I can think about is a Golf GTD 2.0 diesel.
VastStranger1164@reddit
It'll be like with Mercedes last time. It'll be a track record war between them. We might even see Mercedes and Toyota joining it next year.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
I dont think the Toyota will be getting close to this time tbh.
ChaoticNeutrallllll@reddit
Not in the gr gt’s current form atleast, remember lexus once with the lfa Nurburgring edition had a really good time back then.
VastStranger1164@reddit
We don't really know what Toyota will do.
TripleShotPls@reddit
Toyota won't be anywhere near this... at least not in initial base form for sure.
pvdp90@reddit
GM are so out of touch. They could just give the corvette to a professional rung driver and piss on everyone, but nope, they rob us of this moment
VastStranger1164@reddit
The engineers that drove the Corvette are good drivers, but definitely not Nürburgring specialists but I also don't know how much time a pro driver would've shaved off the time.
The Corvette is over powered but doesn't have much aero compared to the GT3 RS and GTD.
pvdp90@reddit
But the time was close enough that a ring specialist can more than make up the difference, I reckon
willpc14@reddit
The first year, base GR GT won't come close to these times. If they do some GT3RS-type car that could compete. I'd also expect Toyota to continually improve on the GR GT every couple years like with the Supra and GR hatches.
VastStranger1164@reddit
We don't know what Toyota will do. They see that people are willing to pay a half mil Euro for a track car and they probably want a piece of the market.
pvdp90@reddit
And the GR isa great base for it. It’s already long, wide and low and has lots of headroom for shoving a ton of power into it and making a bunch of more modifications to suspension and aerodynamics
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit
They’ll release the gt black series variant of the second gt soon so theyll probably send it to the track before the year ends. Might even send their new gt3 there
lique_madique@reddit
They already have. There’s photos of the camo’d BS and GT3 on the ring.
Quick_Coyote_7649@reddit
Those are teasers brother.
Trollygag@reddit
The yet unreleased or even unspecified Mustang GTD Comp*
AcanthaceaeNo948@reddit
I will never understand why the Corvette had to become mid-engined for performance reasons when every non-mid engined car on earth with a fraction of the horsepower runs circles around it all day long.
ChaoticNeutrallllll@reddit
Mid engined cars are known to be more effective for track applications even the mustang has such a layout ie being a front mid engine layout also the black series is one of these examples with both cars having a transaxle at the rear, whatever cars you see nowadays that are sort of track based has been this way for a while with the engine being behind the front axle and transmission being mounted to the rear in most cases, the examples i can point to is black series, the gtd and the gr gt.
AcanthaceaeNo948@reddit
The Corvette has always been front-mid engined.
ChaoticNeutrallllll@reddit
Yea but the packaging at the rear was a trouble for the suspension components I’ve heard.
Makeitquick666@reddit
Doesn't this have at least 300hp less than the mustang? Like it's very impressive laptime, but the straights alone would be more than 5s, right?
Dan_TheGreat@reddit
maybe but i doubt so much. the rs is 1000lbs lighter.
Intel_Oil@reddit
Yes.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Feel like its a fine day when the GTD is a limited edition of a limited edition with an unannounced price tag, & the Manthey you can slap on to any used 992.1
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Huh? Its a GT3RS Manthey, Its a limited car with a limited edition vehicle with a limited edition package.
A GT3RS Manthey is far more limited than this GTD spec, if you have a GTD you can get the new goodies added to the vehicle
hi_im_bored13@reddit
You buy a standard 3RS 992.1 3RS & have the kit installed by whoever you'd like https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/sku992gt3rsmr.html?srsltid=AfmBOoomGjUlGbLUYHK2QaDIwyE2GScF022U9B0oeacF4OMl9jy0e0Xw,
I don't get how the manthey is more limited when you need to fill out an application & get picked for the GTD + you can pick one up used as no-one can resell a GTD for 2yrs
MoneyPitAuto@reddit
I mean this is a bit of an odd comparison, not just anyone could buy a new 3RS. Yes, anyone (with the budget) can buy them used now, but in a year that will apply to the GTD as well when they start hitting the 2 year mark.
TheBolognaPony@reddit
Exactly. A friend has a 2004 Ford GT from new and a 2017 GT he got used because he wasn't selected when those were first sold. He is pissed all over again since he can't get a GTD because he was passed over by Ford again. He has had a couple of GT3RS models over the years and only ever had to wait for production, but he got them after a quarter or two at most. I agree, the money argument is kinda pointless when bringing that money to a dealer doesn't mean you'll be able to leave with the vehicle.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
yeah & like near me you can pick up a number of very low mileage well specced weissach 3rs's in the ~380k range
which isn't msrp, & isn't new, but that's in the ballpark of every as-tested gtd & surely this limited package isn't going to be cheap
inyvr@reddit
Literally not true.
The Manthey kits are already all over social media, installed on cars, and have been for a while now.
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
They are 2 different types of cars. While the manthey isn't limited edition, by price alone it's pretty limited.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Sure, but given the money you can buy one, the same doesn't go for the GTD
deleted_by_reddit@reddit
[removed]
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I'm not saying its cheap, I'm saying given the funds you can buy one & buy the kit & have it installed, you can have all the money in the world & not be able to buy a GTD
They've released zero info on what the limited edition even offers altogether much less how to purchase it & how much it will retail for, the manthey 3rs has been around for 2yrs now meanwhile
& unlike GTD you are also free to trade it
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
We are arguing over specifics us normies care about. Somebody who's in line for a GTD and what's this package will ask Ford directly. I can guarantee you buyers of the GTD have already called Ford about the performance package.
Ultimately it comes down with which one does a buyer want. They're similar but different. Similar in price but for different folks.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
sure they will, & 3rs owners will do the same for the manthey kit, i don't get how it's a bad day for either, fantastic day!

Only 2 seconds off a Manthey 991 GT2 RS. Crazy considering that car has almost 300 more horsepower. Just imagine what the 992 GT2 RS will do.
Scratchpaw@reddit
Unfortunately there wont be a 992 GT2 RS.
SecretPantyWorshiper@reddit
Why? I thought there was spy shots of it circulating around 2 years ago.
Scratchpaw@reddit
.2 GT3RS will have turbo(s) so it wouldn’t male much sense.
dannyphoto@reddit
Why would they make a GT3RS with turbos if they could just call it a GT2RS? That doesn’t make sense.
Riverrattpei@reddit
To differentiate between the turbo car and the turbo + hybrid car (which is what the GT2RS is rumoured to have)
Scratchpaw@reddit
Because it makes more sense to bring out the .2 GT3RS instead of making a different car altogether.
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
yea but it will effectively be a 992 equivalent equivalent to the 991 gt2rs set up. Regardless of naming conventions / product strategy. The same way the new s5 avant is in no way a different formula to the old s4 avant despite the model name change.
StardusterX@reddit
Everything has turbos these days, it means nothing. GT2 RS is still rumored to be produced as twin turbo+hybrid. GT3 RS will be just twin turbo.
Scratchpaw@reddit
This could very well be true but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
DJToaster@reddit
it was scrapped. there’s a one off flat nose being tested but that’s just a engineering study or something
dannyphoto@reddit
300 more horsepower but it weighs nearly 1000lbs more as well.
-Racer-X@reddit
We have all won the HP wars
It’s time they start competing on weight
Nero_Wolff@reddit
Every year I hope for this to be the case and every year car manufacturers go the other way… looking at you BMW
exolomus@reddit
They’ll start competing on which car is heavier and which one can launch a child the furthest after hitting it at 100kph/60mph.
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
yea im actually kinda surprised it wasnt faster. maybe i had unrealistic expectations.
RoRoRotary@reddit
The GTD Competition's lap record isn't in the same category as the GT3 RS MR's.
Until we know whether that GTD is street-legal, and or running non-slicks – Porsche's lap is not invalidated by Ford's.
FrozenUruguayBallbac@reddit
there is no replacement for big v8 modur
TripleShotPls@reddit
Ooof. That's a bad day. And kind of embarrassing.
Dachshand@reddit
Embarrassing to be slower than a more expensive one off car with an unknown price tag and far more horsepower.
Not really
argent_pixel@reddit
Porsche breaking the GT2 RS glass, you say?
FoMoCoNutjob@reddit
Doesn’t get much more embarrassing for Poorsche.
Scratchpaw@reddit
I don’t know if they find it embarrassing considering the GTD has 300hp advantage and full carbon bodykit. If anything, it’s a testament to how good the GT3RS MR is.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Don't bother replying to FoMoCo...they're anti-Porsche and they make sure everyone knows about it every chance they get. Look at their post history, it's almost comical.
Scratchpaw@reddit
Oh, thanks for the heads up!
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
You're welcome!
neelav9@reddit
I don’t think it is. Instead just the beginning of some tug of war
humdizzle@reddit
burnt out on ring times as well. people make such a big deal about 10 second differences... around limerock or something that is a significant difference. But on a 420+ second lap of the ring, its 2%.
hot laps dont really make much sense other than bragging rights. especially when you have to bring the car in for new tires or cooling down every few laps (zr1x at lightening lap for instance)
BrunoEye@reddit
2% on track is a massive difference. I also don't care whatsoever.
I haven't cared about any performance stats since I turned 16.
bse50@reddit
4" on such a long track may be down to weather conditions and track temperatures alone, what races were held before and thus how grippy the track is...
Lap times around a track like Silverstone, Imola or Mugello would make much more sense but still, the pissing contest is fun to watch.
