I definitely think there's an extra "FN tax" on their firearms, too. Like there is on most HK guns. And the all metal Sig guns.
It's not like the 509s are anything more specialier than an M&P or a Glock - other than the name.

I own a 509 and I will not attempt to sell you on it. It’s one of the guns of all time. Most things about it are decent. The trigger is complete and utter shit, worst striker fired trigger I’ve ever felt. The finish on the other hand is exceptional. Ergos are better than Glock but nothing mind blowing. It’s as accurate as you would expect. Optics mounting system is sort of neat, they use little o rings to keep the plates in place, and it works pretty well, so that’s cool I guess. Stock sights are tritium and suppressor height.
It has lots of neat little features yet utterly fails on one of the most important things, the trigger.

This is a completely unremarkable gun.
The people who like them tend to make them their entire personality. I think a lot of this has to do with the perception of FN as exotic, high-quality, and overbuilt. The 509 was also one of the first to the game with optic-ready slides and shipped several 509 variants with multiple recoil spring weights (allowing people to tune their gun to a particular suppressor / comp / ammo).
In 2026, that's old news. Most guns are optics ready, most have better triggers and better grip texture. Many different lines (Glock and clones, PDP, M&P) have more accessories compatibility.

The FN509 series is entirely skippable if you aren’t shooting them suppressed. You’d be better off with a PDP or metal framed M&P if this category is of interest to you

I don’t have any experience with the 509 striker-fired guns but I’ve been extremely pleased with my FNX-45 tactical. It’s DA/SA, came with five mags, and has a 15-round capacity. Great trigger, ergos, and the recoil is pretty well managed.

Not a bad deal, I had the 509cc edge and it was a fantastic gun, great trigger lot of fun. I imagine the full size is a solid piece.

The biggest dings I can see on it are that it doesn’t have as good a trigger as a PDP Pro. The suppressor/optic height sights are also interesting as a stock option but neither of those things bother me.

Even after numerous tweaks including Apex striker, trigger, springs etc. there is no way it comes close for me, but I'm a trigger snob. I would classify mine as acceptible now.
I still don't understand why but my 510 and 545 triggers are somewhat decent out of the box and have smoothed up with use. They use almost all of the same parts as the 509, just with a different trigger bar to account for the larger magazine well.

Even with all the tweaks (including an APEX trigger and striker; polished recoil lockup lugs), my 509 was so similar to a stock Glock trigger...

Upside is that it comes with optic plates and a mounting system for multiple optics. AFAIK Walther will send you 1 when you buy it and you have to wait for it, unless I'm wrong. The shrouded rear sight on these FNs look really good too.
