Supermarket own brands - what are your hits and misses?
Posted by Happy_891@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 345 comments
What supermarket own brand versions do you absolutely swear by (to be either as good as the branded version or better)?
What do you think is a miss and worth forking out for the branded version of?
CitroenUK@reddit
Aldi Bramwell baked beans.
Amanensia@reddit
Co-op hand cooked sea salt & chardonnay vinegar crisps.
They’re amazing.
First-Act-8752@reddit
Have you tried the Tesco one? I find theirs much better.
skankyfish@reddit
When I tried the tesco one it was saltier and barely had any vinegar flavour. If my tongue doesn't hurt I'm just not interested (i might have a problem)
runawaydebt@reddit
You'll like the Asda ones, if I eat the whole bag my tongue is wrecked for days
First-Act-8752@reddit
Interestingly that's exactly why I prefer the Tesco one. I find they get just the right amount of vinegar where it's on the cusp of hurting your tongue but doesn't quite get there, so the right balance for me. Whereas Co-op and Asda do good ones but they hurt my tongue which I'm not a fan of.
tannercolin@reddit
The tesco beef and horseradish were s tier for me. My local doesn't ever seem to stock them now though
runawaydebt@reddit
The Asda ones are also banging
TomAtkinson3@reddit
I ate a whole large bag in a single sitting once, felt like I'd dipped my tongue in acid the next day.
10/10 would do again
ayepeckin@reddit
One bag? Amateur........!
prydeannie@reddit
‘Once’? I now fear my consumption level may be a tad high.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
I get the sides of my lips peeling off the next day after having them.
mixedupfruit@reddit
Ah man, nothing beats co ops own brand crisps
schemmenti@reddit
All co-ops crisps, especially the limited edition ones. Every day I mourn that the chicken kebab ones were limited edition because it was an extremely realistic chicken kebab flavour and they were absolutely mega in a sandwich.
random555@reddit
Just bought some nduja and hot honey flavoured ones that sound interesting but haven't opened yey
Tiny_Champion_8818@reddit
I thought this was the case, but the other day I got the prawn cocktail and there was a strong lemon aftertaste which doesn’t belong in a crisp
CaptainBonkmood@reddit
The gourmet burger flavour limited edition they did a couple of summers ago was fucking amazing
katlaki@reddit
Which co-op, please? Blue, Green?
berkleysquare@reddit
They are 100% better than Walkers greasy crisps in there 34g gram miserly bags.
chez2202@reddit
The Asda sea salt ones are amazing too.
JohnLennonsNotDead@reddit
You’re amazing x
Amanensia@reddit
❤️
harrietmjones@reddit
I don’t even like salt and vinegar crisps but these are so good!
Kirsty5@reddit
I walked 1.5 miles to try and get a bag of these today, shelf empty despite plenty of all the other flavours in stock. A very sad 1.5 mile walk back 😭
Amanensia@reddit
Do the same tomorrow and you'll have walked off enough calories to eat the whole bag!
Kirsty5@reddit
But my fear is they will still be sold out 😭
YarrlieThePirate@reddit
Don’t accept this. It is a psyop Big coop has a big advertising budget on Reddit
They’re the shittiest crisps I’ve ever had
Amanensia@reddit
They're not paying me any of it :D
YarrlieThePirate@reddit
Pringles aren’t crisps, and their salt and ginger albeit severely reduced in flavour in recent years is in another league to them crap things that coop are mass marketing on here
Amanensia@reddit
I'm sorry you're having such a bad day. I hope tomorrow is better for you :)
YarrlieThePirate@reddit
UK Reddit 101:
SALT AND VINEGAR CHARODNNAY OOHBMY TONGUE BURNS OH MY FACE MELTED OFF
Uniqlo are the only clothes that fit me
ronnie pickering
Heinz beans
800 tea drinks a day or you’re not British
does anyone actually watch tv? I haven’t watched it since 1987
Bdroyle1988@reddit
I came here to say this. Elite tier crisp.
Opinion87@reddit
Hear me out here... pop them in the fridge and chill them before eating- makes them even better!
Superb-Ad-8823@reddit
Straight from the fridge and into the bucket for me. I love crisps but can't stand pringles.
Superb-Ad-8823@reddit
They are the bees knees
castielsbitch@reddit
They strip all the skin from my mouth and leave my mouth so sore, I fucking love them.
timotimtimz@reddit
Got a packet on my desk rn. They’re legendary
Defiant_Attempt1469@reddit
I'm addicted 😩
bluesam3@reddit
Weird one: Aldi dark chocolate digestives: S-tier. Lidl dark chocolate digestives: almost but not quite entirely unlike a digestive biscuit.
MySpace_Junkie9@reddit
Sainsburys pizzas are banging. Better than Dominoes
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
Honestly, Lidl's fancy range of stonebaked pizzas in the fridges are pretty good too
louisejanecreations@reddit
I love aldi for pizzas they have such great choices
phatboi23@reddit
Aldi has so much choice for pizza too.
louisejanecreations@reddit
So much choice. I’m always slightly disappointed in other shops as their choice is so limited
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
Tesco fizzy water is Highland Spring in a different bottle. They're both bottled at the Highland Spring plant in Scotland.
TeHNeutral@reddit
What about the still? Can't stand fizzy but this could influence my meal deal
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
Unsure about the still water, sorry!
mrhippo85@reddit
Never knew this! Bonkers how companies get away with this!
FunGuyHan@reddit
George (Asda) white fly-front briefs are pretty good. I’d prefer it if they were cotton, but cotton ones are very difficult to get these days. They are far cheaper than the Hanes ones from America.
bluegirl45@reddit
Hear me out The coco pops that are branded are expensive and taste like cardboard.
Waitrose own brand ones are £1.30 and better. Also after you buy them for a few weeks you get a voucher on your my waitrose card app that gives you 50p off each box you buy!
witdim@reddit
Tesco's own baked beans (red tin) are superior and much cheaper than Heinz.
Left-Pomegranate1608@reddit
I was looking for this comment! We randomly bought Heinz beans to ‘treat ourselves’ and couldn’t believe we preferred the tesco!
chez2202@reddit
I will try these.
I currently alternate between Morrisons beans Lidl beans. Both are great.
Namiweso@reddit
Likewise, Morrisons too.
Heinz beans straight up nasty these days
Physical-Crow-2154@reddit
Branston wins for me
Tombs75@reddit
Best beans by a mile
witdim@reddit
Yup. It's mostly watery sauce with a few beans added.
NeighborhoodLife3408@reddit
The blue stock well ones are pretty good too. Aldis baked beans also. I don't understand why people insist on Heinz....if you want a brand then try Branston or Cross and Blackwell. Same goes for ketchup 👍
rebelallianxe@reddit
Yeah defo Branston beans if you want branded.
aembleton@reddit
Aldis are better, they have a thicker sauce
No_Application_8698@reddit
Sainsbury’s beans for us
ImFamousYoghurt@reddit
All baked beans are superior, including the ones under 30p
tannercolin@reddit
Aldi beans are the best imo.
NATOuk@reddit
Lidl’s Jaffa Cakes are vastly superior to anything McVitties can muster, it’s not even close
piggies1066@reddit
Aldi ones are wayyy better than the brand name too!
NATOuk@reddit
I should have mentioned M&S ones too!
piggies1066@reddit
They're very nice but definitely different tasting compared to the brand name. Lidl and Aldi's are closer to the brand name, and superior to M&S and McVities
NATOuk@reddit
Do you remember when Lidl used to sell raspberry and cherry versions alongside the orange? I miss those
piggies1066@reddit
Yes! I also get jealous to hear of all the flavours available in France/ European countries
dodgycool_1973@reddit
I have yet to find a supermarket Jaffa Cake that is worse than McVitties ones. And you usually get 12 in a pack as opposed to 10.
McVitties are dead last in the Jaffa cake stakes.
piggies1066@reddit
I think it was Morrison's or Asda's ones that I found to not be great personally one was very dry
Indigo5A@reddit
Agreed, tried a few of the supermarket own brand ones recently and Lidls easily the best
piggies1066@reddit
Sacla pesto is my partners GOAT for pesto pasta
absolutelysureithink@reddit
M&S tomato ketchup > all other ketchup
piggies1066@reddit
I see many people say this but I actually found it was very different to the brand name style. It's much thicker, darker and richer. Not necessarily bad tasting, but not similar in taste to stereotypical ketchup for me
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
Gonna have to try it to see how it compares to the Sainsbury's one I swear by.
yolo_snail@reddit
Sainsbury's standard ketchup is top teir.
It's only one step down from eating concentrated tomato puree out of the tube, which is perfect
Japhet_Corncrake@reddit
This. It's the best.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
Finally, someone else who knows this!! I've only been waiting for about 15-20 years I think!
hawkisgirl@reddit
Make it into a sandwich with 2 thin slices of very strong cheddar. A lovely little treat if you have them both out of the fridge.
Legal_Alternative258@reddit
The fewer ingredients one? Yes.
That and their 6 ingredient Mayo.
No_Application_8698@reddit
This is interesting because we tried the cheaper M&S ketchup and found it too sweet (almost impossible for me- I sometimes eat sugar by the spoonful!!).
Then we bought the ‘6 ingredients’ one a couple of weeks ago and I found it too vinegary, and my husband thought it was also too sweet (agave syrup).
We prefer the polish one you can get from Tesco (Pudliszki mild), although that one isn’t that cheap.
Professional-Fox1542@reddit
Have you tried the reduced sugar one?
No_Application_8698@reddit
No, is that decent?
Professional-Fox1542@reddit
I like it and for £1 you can’t go wrong if you want to try it
katlaki@reddit
We bought the Polish and the Japanese (Kewpie) once and tried it just once or twice. Didn't like them when my sister in law thinks they are the best. It was left in the fridge for months and had to throw them away.
Sadly, we have become accustomed to Aldi/Lidl's/ Hellman's one.
Bastet_x@reddit
Yes! I came here to say this. I usually get the smokehouse tomato one, but even the £1 bottle one is lovely.
piggies1066@reddit
Surprisingly, I REALLY enjoy the Aldi own version of the Cadbury honeycomb clusters. It's surprising because I don't tend to like the taste of most of Aldi's chocolate options. I don't like much of Cadburys products either, especially these days.
tongsyabrush@reddit
Lidl bran flakes and Jaffa cakes. Both better than originals.
raffmeup@reddit
Sainsbury’s Chilli and Tomato Sauce for Pasta > asdas chilli and tomato sauce for pasta
ANUFC14@reddit
Almost all own brand salt and shake are absolutely dreadful.
Sainsbury’s version of quavers are better then walkers
revpidgeon@reddit
Tescos Miss Molly chocolate is superior to anything cadbury shits out and is only 65p.
mixedupfruit@reddit
I don't like the Miss Molly chocolate, but I always buy the regular store brand one. Like you say, way better than Cadbury can even hope to be
MyMaisie@reddit
I had some for the first time a few hours ago and was very pleasantly surprised.
Mikey463@reddit
Philadelphia cheese is one of the only things I buy because I think the supermarket versions just don’t match it at all. I have tried all supermarket versions and don’t think it compares at all.
rocketship_potter@reddit
Agree. The consistency in the supermarket ones is always too runny. The Tesco low fat one was like a puddle.
Ready_Perspective_95@reddit
The whipped soft cheese from Aldi or Lidl is amazing!
Alyssa9876@reddit
Ooh not spotted this and go in Aldi a lot, Lidl occasionally because they closed the one near us so it’s further away. Drive past Aldi on the way home from work lol. Loved whipped cream cheese on trips to the US. Will have to try this next time I go.
blueroses8000@reddit
This isn’t about the taste but recently I keep seeing health pages promoting the Tesco Creamfields (basically Tesco value) cream cheese as the better choice than Philadelphia as it doesn’t contain any of the added ingredients, which surprised me as usually the cheaper stuff has more.
_annahay@reddit
I use the creamfields one and it’s delicious.
External-Praline-451@reddit
Philadelphia is owned by Kraft (American) and Tesco is British, so not surprised Philadelphia is more ultra processed.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
The few times I've had anything 'Creamfields', it's been rank!
topheavyhookjaws@reddit
Had the cheese once, never doing that again. Tasted like a cheesestring or something, really odd
blueroses8000@reddit
Yeah I’m not recommending it and haven’t tasted it but was just surprised that the value version is the less processed one in this case.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
Yeah, that is pretty surprising to hear for sure!
Mikey463@reddit
Tried that and hated it
CaptainYorkie1@reddit
The Aldi full fat one is really good, have you tried that one?
Mikey463@reddit
You know I tell a lie I haven’t tried all. Aldi is the last one I haven’t tried. Lidl I have and it’s shit.
GrandAsOwt@reddit
Philadelphia’s the only one I’ve found that works well in cream cheese frosting. The others are too runny. I’d love to hear if there’s anything better.
b-roc@reddit
Farmfoods do one which is actually slightly cheesy. To begin I was like "ewwww" and then suddenly it became my favourite.
Incidentally it's much better in cheesecakes.
cat5crochet5femme@reddit
Aldi mayo is as good as Hellmanns.
Ok_Shirt983@reddit
In my completely uneducated opinion Hellman's mayonnaise is the most flavourless crap mayonnaise I have ever tasted, we have to buy two mayonnaiseeses because my partner insists on Hellman's (and the even worse Hellman's light mayonnaise just to add insult to injury)
TeHNeutral@reddit
Yeah I've ended up having to lay out money for kewpie
cat5crochet5femme@reddit
Light mayo is wrong, I wouldn’t waste money buying it, especially a premium for hellmanns, I’d rather just use less of it.
Candy_Lawn@reddit
tried it this week tastes a bit more vinegary but i like that. def made the switch
kunstlich@reddit
Most own brand cherry cola is rank, Coke and Pepsi really do have the recipe down. Most other sodas the own brands are fine (lemonade can be really hit or miss), its specifically the cherry ones are not nice.
TeHNeutral@reddit
RIP Virgin Cola
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
Yeah, I'm yet to find a supermarket brand that tastes as good as Coke. I'll get supermarket lemonade, but I can't find a cola that's as good as traditional Coke yet
Ok-Nobody6221@reddit
I once tried a fancy organic cola and although it didn't taste like coke it was a lovely drink.
Beartato4772@reddit
That's because Coke (and clones) is not really a Cola as such. Much like the difference between bananas and your average banana favour thing.
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
Was it Fentiman's?
Ok-Nobody6221@reddit
I can't remember the name but I don't think it was that
Turbulent-Owl875@reddit
Asda cherry coke is pretty good! I pick one up from time to time for a change, only 50p for a 2 litre bottle.
Weird_Fun1493@reddit
What i was going to say too. I order it as an occasional treat
targetsbots@reddit
Cereal and milk..
jdsuperman@reddit
I'd never buy a knock-off version of Marmite, Coca-Cola or Red Bull - those are all top, top brands for me and always have been. The latter two in particular because their rivals all contain sweeteners and they're the only brands with the balls to keep the sugar in.
Pretty much anything else is fair game for me. Happy with supermarket versions.
Beartato4772@reddit
Marmite just got bought so expect that to go to shit. I've found the Sainsburys one a viable alternative.
Skittlit@reddit
The knock off marmites are worth trying. They spread nicer
jdsuperman@reddit
Have tried some and have never found one to compare with the almighty. Been disappointed every time. Now, as I said, it's one of only a few name brands I won't hesitate to buy.
Rich_27-@reddit
Tesco own brand Honey Nut cornflakes are far superior to Kelloggs
Beartato4772@reddit
And this is weird because that used to be one of the times I'd swear by Kelloggs, we're talking a decade+ ago when we had them at work. We tried getting Tesco back then and they were worse.
Then after years I bought the Kelloggs one semi-recently. Awful. Somehow tastes like it's all artificial sweetener when that isn't even in the ingredients.
DylboyPlopper@reddit
Aldi tropical twist (lilt) 🤌🏻
Beartato4772@reddit
As good or bad?
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Their Fanta Fruit Twist knockoff though...
heidivodka@reddit
We call it not lilt in our house, love the stuff
FairZucchini7814@reddit
We call it Pilt!
inflatablefish@reddit
It's a shame that Aldi & Lidl's knock-off Dr Pepper is rubbish. It's like they've got the right stuff but they don't put enough syrup in the soda stream. If they could get it right I'd be drinking it like there's no tomorrow!
VeterinarianVast197@reddit
Professor Peppy
Ok_Pop_8067@reddit
The Aldi one is called Professor Peppy 😂
jdsuperman@reddit
If only they'd put the sugar back in real Dr Pepper - I haven't drunk it for years, apart from American imports I find occasionally.
whyte2097@reddit
The taste is there but it is weak. Agreed.
Second_Guess_25@reddit
Aldis Limonata lemonade is 👌
ShotInTheBrum@reddit
Liquid nectar.
Zubi_Q@reddit
So so good!
jpeach17@reddit
Most of Aldi's fizzy drinks are really good. Exception being the cherry cola. Awful stuff.
PeachyAna90@reddit
This ☝️🙏🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌
cat5crochet5femme@reddit
Gives me stomach ache, I prefer their fake Fanta twist I think it’s called twisted fruits could be wrong though.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
Tried this the other day as I heard it was good. I'm someone who generally avoids all the sugar free crap that's taken over since the tax, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Didn't have that overly fake taste a lot of them do.
Beartato4772@reddit
Everything Asda "Extra Special" is always slightly disappointing.
Never very disappointing, just slightly.
What's strange is, even though I am expecting to be slightly disappointed and are prepared for that, I am still somehow slightly disappointed.
Anonimoose15@reddit
Aldi apple & pear squash tastes better (and is cheaper) than Robinsons imo
Lidl Tropical Crush (Lilt /fanta tropical rip off), is better tasting than the original OR Aldi version (tropical blast)
tittysherman1309@reddit
Lidls tropical fruit crush is next level. We normally buy loads of it, along with some lidl red wine & some fruit. Chuck it all together in a big jug with a bit of brandy (i always have brandy in lol) and loads of ice, and it makes the best sangria I swear to god
BlueHornedUnicorn@reddit
Seconded - I buy Aldi Apple and Pear squash in bulk, always need to have at least 2 bottles in my cupboard. My son and I love it, and it really helps him to get his water intake up!
spaceandthewoods_@reddit
Tescos own brand popcorn is better than other supermarket own brand popcorn; it's just fluffier and by comparison the other supermarket popcorns feel more stale
Alyssa9876@reddit
When our kids were little to save money I would try to make almost everything from scratch so would buy a bag of unpopped corn and make it myself. A small bag for around £1 will last ages. A small handful of dried corn makes a large bowlful so pennies for each. My kids still prefer the home made to anything from the supermarkets and the theatre of it is quite fun for them as well. I can still do a mean salty/butter one and a sweet sugar one. Used to do coloured corn as well when they were little, plain hot fresh corn in a bag or lidded container with a shake of icing sugar with a few drops of food colour in it first. Then shake. You get coloured slightly sweet corn.
sheepandlambs@reddit
Co-Op has the best cobs. The Aldi ones are horrible. Tesco are tolerable but not as good. I will sometimes go to Co-Op just for their cobs.
(That's "bread rolls" for our friends from less sophisticated parts of the country.)
There's a Tesco Finest pasta salad I'm fond of. Spinach and pine nut pasta. It's regularly in the reductions and I have been known to buy up all of them in that case.
Alyssa9876@reddit
I think Aldi and Lidl were on lists I saw of eggs without palm oil I think
mrhippo85@reddit
What’s that pasta like?…I’m curious to try it but not at full price!
IDoMathsNotMath@reddit
It's a good day when the spinach and pine nut pasta is in the reductions. I'm like you when I see it - at least two get bought.
sheepandlambs@reddit
I think I grabbed 4 from the reductions once. That was a special day.
Thank you to my uni housemate who bought 2, decided she didn't like it, and gave me the other one. I've never been the same since.
Lessarocks@reddit
Waitrose frozen breaded fish is so much better than branded ones.
seklas1@reddit
Is it cheaper than branded ones?
takesthebiscuit@reddit
There is a good chance that it’s better value, chunkier but also that it’s more sustainable than the brand
Waitrose don’t really sell on price
Alyssa9876@reddit
I miss a few years ago when Waitrose had the pick your own offers for the loyalty card. You could pick offers from a pretty long list over all departments often on basic items and you could get that offer on top of any existing offers so combine them. I vaguely recall an offer on fresh chickens where in store it was buy 2 get one free and then you could add your card for offer on top which was so much off each chicken and you got three discounts even though on the other offer one was free. I recall something similar on their dry smoked bacon as well.
I think there was a limit as to how many you could buy of each offer but we had a loyalty card each so would go around with two lists lol. We would get the cheap whole chickens and break them down at home and freeze in portions. Miss those offers, also woukd grab the free newspaper and coffee each. Definitely rarely make the trip to Waitrose since they stopped it.
Lessarocks@reddit
No idea. I normally do my big shop at Tesco and only use Waitrose for top ups. But I picked their fish up one day when I did t know what to have for dinner. Now I’d never go back. There’s a world of difference.
seklas1@reddit
With Waitrose and M&S it’s nice because most things are they own brands and selection otherwise is limited, so you either get it or you don’t. But at the same time, it probably costs close to or more than branded ones elsewhere, so doesn’t fit into the whole “supermarket own brands” narrative which is supposed to be as good or better, but at way lower prices.
MrPogoUK@reddit
Waitrose seem to have an “Essentials” range which is usually cheaper than the branded products, a regular Waitrose range that’s the same sort of price as the branded version and a “No. 1” range which is usually the most expensive version in the store, so it really depends which one you go for (and if they’re available for that product).
incredibubblez@reddit
Lidl luxury fish fingers in their freezer cabinets are almost as good as the ones Waitrose have on their fish counter at a fraction of the cost
schemmenti@reddit
M&S cheddar. It's only 2.80 for a 350g block and it's beautiful, a lovely dry mature cheddar cheese.
TJTheree@reddit
All m&S cheese if fucking brilliant. In fact, most M&S food in general is top tier
Alyssa9876@reddit
Yep now we are in our 50’s we are in a position to not scrimp as much for food costs so we love a bit of M and S food. Did a Christmas order pickup last year and even putting a timed slot in the queue was out the door almost lol. Their baked beans are fab, adore some of their salad dressings, often have really good tasty soft fruits and just all around most things are better quality.
BroadDraft2610@reddit
Maybe a bit off topic, but I love Aldi cleaning products. The washing up liquid is way better than fairy and a fraction of the cost.
No_Grapefruit8985@reddit
Aldi’s version of Doritos are at least as good and half the price. (Obviously everyone will have different tastes but if anything I prefer the Aldi ones). The cereal also seems to pass muster with my kids, which is good news as it is half the price of Kellogg etc. On the other hand, have been disappointed with the apples
Littlelindsey@reddit
Morrisons own brand tomato ketchup is actually pretty good. I prefer it to Heinz as it doesn’t taste so artificial
Novel_Description164@reddit
I swear by the Asda create your own pizzas. Better than anything that comes off the shelf
But no supermarket cola can compete with Pepsi Max or Diet Coke
Hopeful_Evening4520@reddit
Hits - M&S Lamingtons and their Peach tea (so much nicer than Liptons).
DoctorOctagonapus@reddit
Ooh I might have to try and find a bottle of that peach tea. I discovered Snapple many years ago on a trip to the US and it's stupidly expensive to import now.
NW773@reddit
I recently started getting Ringtons tea and our delivery guy told me they make most of the M&S teas. Plus the Ringtons teacakes are also apparently make by Tunnocks.
Over_thinker123@reddit
Tesco own brand gold roast coffee about £3 for 200 g jar.
Comfortable_Big_7923@reddit
Aldi Pringles (Prongles) have a vastly superior texture.
zenithica@reddit
not sure if i’m just sleep deprived but prongles just made me laugh out loud
T-h-e-d-a@reddit
M&S Cranberry Sauce is terrific.
They haven't had any in my local branch for a while, but Lidl's Coconut Water doesn't have any added fructose (neither does the M&S one, but it costs a bit more).
zenithica@reddit
perfectly timed info on the coconut water for me as im planning to pick up some later today and will now check lidl first!
RebeccaCheeseburger@reddit
Sainsbury’s taste the difference mint tea, it’s so good.
85Neon85@reddit
Asda meat free mince is nicer than Quorn.
Odd-Independence3732@reddit
Sainsbury’s washing up sponges are terrible - within a week they will have most disintegrated, I will always now fork out for the branded ones which last ages!
Motor-Platform295@reddit
Lidl coffee beans. Cheap and delicious. Italian roast.
Yellow_cupcake_@reddit
Hellmanns light mayo is elite and in my opinion, can’t be topped by anything else.
No_Investigator9059@reddit
Random but I much prefer Heinz mayo
Complete_Carpenter18@reddit
Asda cheesy curls 100% better than quavers.
Guilty-Jellyfish-855@reddit
M&S lemon and lime Jaffa cakes. I don't even like branded Jaffas that much but omg these are just delicious, I can eat the whole packet in one sitting
dbltax@reddit
Lidl Granola is the best by far and costs less than £2 a kilo. Bargain.
flippertyflip@reddit
I eat Aldi Tropical almost exclusively. Imo it's much better than Lidl.
Morrisons granola is crap.
Standard_Mind6852@reddit
I’ll only eat Jordan’s granola with a hint of honey as it’s one of only 2 I’ve found to contain no coconut 🤢. The other one is Jordan’s too but has raisins in it and I can’t be arsed to pick them out every time I have a bowl.
flippertyflip@reddit
I add extra raisins 🤣.
I enjoy coconut too. But it's not my favourite. Papaya is the king of nuggets to dig out of your granola.
God now I come to think of it I'm gonna buy some dried ginger and stock it in.
Happy_891@reddit (OP)
Ohh will try that next time!
inflatablefish@reddit
I always eat it for breakfast at work, and they stay good for a long time, so anytime the app gives me a discount I'm always picking up like 6 months worth.
DiscoDoberman@reddit
Tesco own-brand rip of cereal is better than big brand.
Standard_Mind6852@reddit
Their Wheaties are far superior to Shreddies and my autistic/arfid son will eat them. However he won’t eat own brand honey nut hoops so still have to spend money on the Nestle bastards.
EveryChemistry9163@reddit
Waitrose spreadable - It’s really nice.
detectivebabylegz@reddit
Hit: M&S baked beans
Miss: any own brand tunnocks caramel wafer.
CyGuy6587@reddit
Lidl's own brand version of Vimto isn't great. Thankfully real Vimto is still reasonably priced in this day and age.
mrhippo85@reddit
Aldi’s is pretty good!
Superspark76@reddit
Lidl beans, soups, sauces, crisps, toilet rolls and biscuits are all far better than most big name brands and for a fraction of the price
Mr_Bobby_D_@reddit
Aldi own brand baked beans are very good 🙌🏻
oah9449@reddit
Lidl version of chocolate hobnobs (Oaties)
nra43vr@reddit
Tesco or Asda’s diluting juice

Aldi's dupe of Bailey's especially the white chocolate one is gorgeous!!
catasha7@reddit
Lidl - cola xx Tastes the same as Pepsi maxx
Oopsie_Daisy_Life@reddit
Lidl’s version of Tunnock’s caramel wafers are just not quite right. Originals all the way.
MercuryJellyfish@reddit
Lidl's knock off McCoys crisps are a good a the name brand, and are still 30g bags in a six pack, not the 25g shrinkflation disappointment.
Purrtymeow04@reddit

Sainsbury’s Cloudy Lemonade absolutely shits on every other cloudy lemonade I have ever tasted. Am I love cloudy lemonade.
My grandad had throat cancer in the early 00’s. His salivary glands as well as a lot more were destroyed basically. But he survived, the only thing that would quench some kind of thirst was cloudy lemonade. he passed away 5 years ago, the best we got to was Diet Fanta Icy Lemon but I know he’d have loved Sainsbury’s CL. It might sound crazy but I’m still searching
Some_Ad6507@reddit
Aldi dark chocolate 👌🏼
hawkisgirl@reddit
It’s kind of niche, but Waitrose plant-based coleslaw is incredible. Just the right balance of tangy and creamy and crunchy.
surfermark99@reddit
LIDL Bon Gelati fake Cornettos are superior in every way.

Sainsbury's own make midget or as they're called now mini gems..
Whithorsematt@reddit
Own brand marmite just as good or better.
ashlingle@reddit
They're quite new but Aldis version of the kinder bueno ice creams are the same thing. They are a fraction of the price as well. I also prefer their flavoured (strawberry) Taurus to strongbow. The orange cider tastes like shite though.
QC420_@reddit
Co-op three bean and tomato soup
Rubostars@reddit
Wins: Aldi's own Mamia nappies are far better than any Huggies or Pampers or whatever. Way cheaper too. M&S tea, M&S ketchup and Aldi's Brooklea Greek yogurt are winners also IMO. To avoid: supermarket brand milk, all of them tasteless except some Jersey mill from M&S. Lidl toast bread is also awful
heidivodka@reddit
Tesco custard tarts
dodgycool_1973@reddit
Yes. Have happy memories of taking my daughter shopping on a Sunday morning when she was little. We would always get custard tarts and eat them in the car before we got home.
Mum never knew :)

That’s making core memories that your daughter will cherish. Speaking as a daughter that remembers these little things my parents did

Aldi Crunch Corner yoghurts are far superior to any branded equivalents.
nogoodnamezavailable@reddit
I find all Aldi own brands to be exceptional quality, and for the price you can't beat it. The fizzy drinks are particularly good, especially the Fanta and Monster knock offs (twisted fruits, lemon, orange, and Dark Thunder ⚡
bunnyswan@reddit
Aldis long like oat milk is really good much cheaper than others and it's long life
MysteriousTable6394@reddit
They stopped selling the long life oat, almond and soya in my one, so have to go with the chilled. I do prefer their soya milk in comparison to the other own brand supermarkets and other branded ones
bunnyswan@reddit
That's a shame!
TalynRahl@reddit
Back when i was eating a huge amount of peanut butter…
The Tesco own brand peanut butter was easily my favourite. And I’d tried them all!
AClockworkLaurenge@reddit
Morrisons salt and pepper loaf is such good bread, as are the salt and pepper baps. I use the rolls for burger buns and highly recommend. However not always in stock
Lidl's malted bloomer and seeded bloomer both have a great top crusts and thick slices.
I still mourn Tesco's own brand white chocolate which used to be so delicious and creamy, almost buttery rich. I didn't really care for white chocolate until I tried it, then I used to buy it regularly because it was just that good. But they changed the recipe in like 2021 because suddenly it tasted vile and waxy, got a lot of negative reviews. Not sure if they ever did change it back or at least improved it (which I doubt with all the chocolate enshittification) because I never wanted to risk eating the gross version again.
Tombs75@reddit
Aldi do a fruit and nut chocolate bar which is ten times better than cadburys one
MysteriousTable6394@reddit
The wholenut one is just as good. Bought a Cadburys one not long ago and it no longer does it for me

Lidl Orangeade is just as good as orange Fanta. I love Lidl chocolate, Aldi chocolate. Lidl ice cream is superb however I find the Aldi ice cream pretty poor in comparison
AmbivalentApe@reddit
Lidl ketchup - but only the standard 650g with the white lid - 77% tomtoe puree. The promo 900g with the green lid only has 72% concentrated tomatoe puree and is not as nice. So much cheaper than the brand.
Bogroleum@reddit
Tesco crunchy nut cornflakes are good, the Lidl ones are shite.
Crimson-Violet@reddit
Morrisons' Jaffa Cakes - far superior in taste to McVities and a better ratio of chocolate and sponge to orangey bit.

Asda's own nachos kit, it's decent when you can't be arsed making anything
inflatablefish@reddit
Aldi's Coffee Stout and Chocolate Stout are both top-tier. Lidl's Purple Panther stout is almost there, and makes up the difference in value for money.
PatserGrey@reddit
I forgot about the chocolate stout, more of a winter time tipple of me but yes, it's bloody nice!
inflatablefish@reddit
Likewise. They do a very good line of little bottles of German beer which are nice and refreshing in hot weather, I'll have to remember to pick some more up before summer gets going.
PatserGrey@reddit
If that's the little pack of 6 bottles which name escapes me, yes they're also a semi-regular purchase.
inflatablefish@reddit
One of these years I ought to try the smaller bottles of French/Belgian beer just to see if they're any good. I remember my dad used to be very fond of his "lickle bockles" back in the day.

M&S own brand stuff is excellent. Particularly like their chocolate coated custard creams and cookies & cream chocolate spread 😋 Also their red velvet hot cross buns.
Tillymint39@reddit
Lidl Hot Cross Buns are the best- Tesco close second.
Breaking-Dad-@reddit
I've tried a lot of Aldi stuff, and the ones I would definitely use are:
Cereal. Pretty much all of them are as good or better than the brands.
Coffee. The Nescafe Al Jazeera (or whatever) clone is as good.
Curry sauce. Their butter chicken pouch is superb.
Squash/Cordial. Same as all the brands but much cheaper.
What I have tried but given up on:
Marmite. Not a patch on the real thing.
Nutella. Kids don't like it.

Is it the beans, the sauce or both that you find rank? I think the beans are the same as m&s but the sauce is much thicker

It’s the beans, just an odd texture for me. Lidls are ok. Sainsbury’s, the sauce tastes a bit weird. I like Branston beans but they are too expensive

Electronic-Stay-2369@reddit
The only two things I am aware of that don't work are Cola and Cornflakes. And if I'm buying a pizza, it'd be Dr Oetkers every time (although I have had some very good Sainsburys Taste The Difference ones too)

Supermarket colas (and, to be fair, every other UK cola brand I can think of) are all rendered disgusting by sweeteners, apart from the OG Coca-Cola.

kalendral_42@reddit
Morrisons ‘Apollo’ (Mars) & ‘Sprint’ (marathon bars are a good one
Any own brand baked beans should be banned - has to be Heinz or Branston
A lot of the herbs, spices, sauce ingredients (e.g. Morrisons parsley sauce, etc) are just as good as the branded ones
Sparkling water has to Highland Spring or San Pellegrino - I cam’t quite describe the difference except to say the own brand versions are almost too carbonated
Tomato juice has to be Big Toms but other fruit juices are fine as pen brands
Morrisons own brand porridge is just as good as Quaker Oats
Morrisons grated & sliced cheese is just as good as the branded lot but if I’m going for dairy free/lactose free it has to be Oatly or Arla
Cumulus-Crafts@reddit
I'm a huge sparkling water fan, and I can confirm that Tesco's own brand of sparkling water is just Highland Spring in a different bottle. It's just a shame that you only get them in 6 packs, when asda does 16 packs (but doesn't taste as good in terms of carbonation)

Sainsburys scampi. Lots of different sizes but whole chunks and way, way better than Youngs.
AlfCosta@reddit
Sainsbury’s Beans and Sausages. Better than any, especially Heinz over priced rubbish. I also appreciate that someone thought it funny to price them at 57p…
sennalvera@reddit
I was pleasantly surprised by the Lidl own-brand label wine. It wasn't winning any awards, but most budget wines are vinegar and this was quite nice.

Winiary Mayonnaise is lovely. It's from Poland and you can buy it in Tesco.
BillWilberforce@reddit
Aldi diet Fanta has a nasty aftertaste. On the plus side you do drink less of it.
DrSalvador1996@reddit
Tesco do those biscuit multi packs with custard creams, malted milks, bourbons and something else. Those bourbons good god, phenomenal
No_Topic5591@reddit
Morrisons' own brand Bovril is good, and their spreadable butter is the best.
VincentVan_Dough@reddit
I love the Tesco Finest range. We buy a lot of their stuff: die cut pasta, jersey milk, cheeses, meats, cod filets, blueberries and more.
Robinhoyo@reddit
M&S peanut butter cups, like Reese's but with actual chocolate and better peanut butter.
milsonmorris@reddit
I prefer Tesco's version of a Twix than a actual Twix.
Brickie78@reddit
I genuinely don't know if the stuff Lidl get in for their themed weeks is own-brand or not - I expect it is. When "Alpenfest" week rolls round, I can't get enough of the Küstenkäse cheese, which is great and I appear to be the only one buying it near me.
The "Dulano" branded ham is really nice too
JC_vee@reddit
M&S baked beans. Less than half the price of Heinz and taste way better
BlueHornedUnicorn@reddit
I said this in my group chat the other day and got slaughtered by the Heinz stans.
As an aside, I switched to Branston Beans and absolutely love them.
I'm going to do a blind baked beans tasting at the next group gathering cos I'm convinced my pals don't actually like Heinz/will prefer them to M&S or Branston and I'm determined to prove it!
blueroses8000@reddit
So I ended up doing an unintentional blind taste test with M&S ones this week. They didn’t have Heinz so I got the M&S ones and then by the time we sat to eat I had forgotten they weren’t Heinz and only just remembered now you’ve mentioned it, which means I noticed no difference.

Asda have their own brewery for their IPA’s and they have one called like Juicylicious or something, tastes exactly like Neck Oil and it’s much cheaper.

Aldis Oaties/ chocolate Oaties are better than McVities Hobnobs. I swear the Hobnobs have got softer and squishier but the Aldi ones are crunchier

Tescos finest chips are much nicer than McCain and only a couple of pence more.

Aldi's mini egg baileys knock off was beautiful as a hot chocolate. Also their zx cherry cola or whatever it's called, I love the stuff. Feels much lighter on me than a coke or Pepsi.
AnimeBritGuy@reddit
Aldi do a Bramwell's Tomato Sauce. Used it for a while now and no one in the house has noticed the change.
Thin_Advance_2757@reddit
I've always sworn by Sainsbury's ketchup. It tastes like tomatoes rather than cheap vinegar like Heinz does.
slightlyoddparent@reddit
By and large tesco stuff is great and in some cases better than the branded stuff.
Heinze beans for instance . Chock full of sugar and 2 quid a tin tesco 49p and taste lovely.
